I did catch 1550 ESPN radio as I was passing by so it was probably
KESJ. It wouldn't have been a new station anyway. Domestic circumstances
kept me away from the radio most of the evening so nothing new to report.

I believe it's going ahead on schedule, so I'll be listening on 1550 tonight.
I checked the CBC Windsor web pages, and they make no mention of special
programming, but they do remind listeners that the changeover is effective
October 1. I expect that CBE will disappear with little or no fanfare.

I noticed WZRK The Avenue under CBE last night around 2300 EDT, obviously
still on day power, so it looks like they're destined to become a new pest

Now, if only WQEW-1560 would stop spewing crud all over 1550...

One more update: the interference issues with CBEW-FM were caused by a pirate

postpone the shutdown of CBE.

The segment about the shutdown aired on CBE at about 1750. They used the
audio from this TV story (mind the wrap):

Hi, Rick and Tim--
I heard this one too, after Rick tipped me off about St. Joe (which I
couldn't hear here). It was mostly weak in the jumble here, although at times
it
broke through. The only problem was that I was hearing Southmoore as
Southport and the Sapulpa team referred to as the Deacons. My internet
searches were coming up zero. Finally I was able to hear the one HS clearly as
Southmoore, find that they were indeed playing Sapulpa tonight, and
correctly ID Sapulpa's mascot name as the Chieftans, not Deacons. In the end
a
great sleuth job, but the station itself was unneeded here.

CBE-1550 Windsor ON has applied to the CRTC to move to FM (97.5 MHz,

There goes my last firm grip on CBC on medium wave.

Is the frequency going dark or will someone else take it over?

Subject: [IRCA] CBE-1550 Windsor ON applies to move to FM (97.5, 3.2 kW)

CBE-1550 Windsor ON has applied to the CRTC to move to FM (97.5 MHz,
3.2 kW, 130.1 meters)
with a second transmitter at Leamington ON 991.5 MHz, 6.1 kW, 58.7

This will replace the never implemented nested FM relay on 102.3 MHz.
CBE will go
silent after the usual three month simulcast period. Excluding a few
40 watt low power relay transmitters
this is the last (assuming that CBI will also actually move) English
language CBC station
on AM between Manitoba and Newfoundland.

Here in the West, we still have plenty of CBC service, CBU-690, CBX-740,
CBR-1010, CBK-540, CBW-990, and CFPR-860. Plus I get CBXQ-540 (LPRT from

Re: [IRCA] CBE-1550 Windsor ON applies to move to FM (97.5, 3.2 kW)

2008-11-13 Thread David Faulkner
Group:

I will miss hearing CBE when I go back to Port Huron to visit.  Aren't they
alreaddy simulcasting on 93.5 in Sarnia/Chatham?  How far east of Windsor will
they have to build the new tower to protect 97.1 and 97.9 in Detroit?

More importantly, what happens to 1550's status as a Canadian Clear Channel?
Or does such a status even exist anymore.  Will this open the door for
Delaware, OH to actually cover the Columbus area at ngiht, and Fremont, MI, to
get more power, particularlly more night power?  What about the four tiny 1550s
in Indiana?

As far as DX is concerned, CBE was never much of a problem for me.  Its signal
in Port Huron was about equal to that of WXYZ-1270 (listenable, but far from
local quality), and it went off after midnight with the rest of the CBC.  I
logged a number of stations on the channel during CBE's SP, including KKHI, the
WBSC DX Test (1971?), and the Tijuana.  I also logged the major southern U.S.
stations at LSS in the CBE null.  CBE slop was never a problem on 1540 or
1560.  CBEF, after it came on, was much more of a problem for me in Port Huron.

The West doesn't include Southern California. I haven't heard Canada from
here since the last two Canadian frequencies (1040 and 1200) became occupied
quite a number of years ago. CKST made it down here pretty well.

2008-11-13 Thread Martin and Wendy Foltz
I hope it takes a while. I will visit my parents in Michigan next summer and
CBE is in my MI log but I never sent them a report.

The only Canadian that's heard down here in So Cal is 1130 Vancouver and
it's not a regular. I've heard bits of what I thought was CBK-540 but never
an ID.

I've only heard 5 Canadians since 1985 and 3 were only heard once: CFFR-660,
CBR-1010, CKST-1040, CKWX-1130 and CKDA-1200. Only CKST and CKWX were heard
more than once.
