Mike, Nothing I logged was new, but all three I had not heard in sometime. KFYR goes back several years at least since I last heard them. KFYR used to be common when KOAC was off in the Summer months in the 60s & 70s. Not to admit that I've been DXing for decades but I first heard Billings 970 here while they were still KOOK. What a neat thing it was two months ago at the IRCA convention to be inside the same room that once housed that station (during the KTVQ TV tour). I have 3 North Dakota stations logged in SoCal so far. 1100. 1130 And 1550 before KQWB moved to X band. 550 here is mostly dominated by Bakersfield and Phoenix but occasionally KOAC or KRAI might make an appearance. Hi Dennis, Your rel station is probably KIHH Eureka. They are miing wih the oldies station (KNND) the last few nights. KIHH is Immaculate Heart Radio, but their ID is hard to catch as it is "KIHH-Eureka" and that is it. I have not caught any local announcements so far. Infact the ID was so poor, I am not going to try a report as yet until I get a better signal. I am again recording 1400 over night. KFJL was easier to hear and there were more anouncements, but I am still wondering what their formt is since it is owned by builders. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin Seaside OR KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

I don't think I'm old enough to remember the KMLO calls. I do regularly hear Vista day and night, though (currently KCEO). Signal is fair - about an S4 (the way I judge the RST scale) on a typical portable - enough to light a tuning indicator or trip a seek/scan, in the daytime. At night it's weak and competes with KOMO Seattle, although usually KCEO comes out on top. Also, I don't typically count call changes or format changes as new loggings, but I will count transmitter & antenna changes as new loggings. For example, KDIS and KSPN in the Los Angeles area swapping frequencies a number of years ago isn't grounds for new loggings for me. However, local KCBQ moving to a different transmitter site with a different power & antenna configuration would for me technically be a new logging, even though they had the same callsign and format. >> Back in 2003 I had only 7 stations in CA I had never heard >> + 22 others not heard under current calls but logged on >> previous calls. At night there is signs of fading from co-channel / skywave interference, but KURS is always on top of the channel. Grr... if I had known someone was wondering about Lake Isabella's 1140, I would have tried for them. I did log KTKR 1310 Taft CA on my old Hallicrafters radio back in the '70s. I remember what 1150 L.A. did to the stations in Morro Bay and Santa Rosa. I think all that was to woo the Dodgers (and ironically they are now back on KABC) For years you could see the old KRKD 1150 towers on top of the Arcade building in downtown L.A. (They may still be there!?) The AM 1150 situation reminds me of WLIB 1190 New York and midwest station WOWO. > From: mwd...@webtv.net > Date: Mon, 30 May 2011 20:15:19 -0700 > To: gsant...@hotmail.com; irca@hard-core-dx.com > Subject: Re: [IRCA] DX Tips for WDXR > > Yes, I also remember 850 Thousand Oaks. Patrick: PIN diodes don't protect the front end - they are normally used to switch preselecter filters above medium wave as their losses are too high at MW. If you're having MW sensitivity problems, it is very likely to be something else. Re: [IRCA] DX Tips for WDXR
Good catch on KERN, Patrick. I believe at night they're directional pattern may not favor you all that much. I live in El Cajon, CA (near San Diego, CA), but sometimes visit friends in/near Visalia, CA or go to a conference once or twice a year in Tulare, CA, about an hour or so north of Bakersfield near where KERN is located. (I'm about 4 hours or so south of Bakersfield, not taking into account L.A. traffic.) I have noticed on multiple occasions that I usually get a better signal at home than in central California at night when visiting my friends there. It's there, but usually either just weak or has co-channel interference. (I forget exactly, though, as it's been a few months since I've been there and afaik I'm not going again till the end of May.) Also, I've noticed the same thing on 840 KXNT North Las Vegas, but even more severely. At home, KXNT is a fairly solid blowtorch, sometimes with a local-grade / "full-quieting" (noise-blanking) signal at night, but at Lake Mead east of Las Vegas on the NV/AZ border, reception of KXNT is difficult, if not impossible on a pocket radio, although a loop can help. Another thing, your signature mentions you as being the KGED QSL manager - that's 1680 in Fresno, CA, right? I haven't checked in the past few weeks, but in January and February I was often hearing KGED at noon with my Tecsun PL-606 and Select-A-Tenna sitting on a chain-link fence. Also at noon I was frequently hearing a Spanish-language station mixing with them on the same channel. I understand KGED has been broadcasting in an Asian language for some months now. As the fence I was using as an antenna (with the SAT) favors north/south reception, I suspect I was possibly receiving 1680 KNTS Seattle, WA, at noon. You wouldn't by any chance know of anyone involved with that station that would be able to confirm my reception of it? (I do have several recordings links, if desired.) --- On Fri, 3/25/11, Patrick Martin wrote: From: Patrick Martin Subject: [IRCA] DX Tips for WDXR To: irca@hard-core-dx.com, nancyjohn...@prodigy.net Date: Friday, March 25, 2011, 12:20 AM 1180 KERN CA, Wasco, good on top of KLAY with talk at 1128 EDT 3/24, News at 1130 "KERN News Talk 11-80" IDs. Paul, I think the last time I heard KSJB was in the 80s or 90s. Of course with Vancouver, gone it may be easier now. When I heard KSJB Vancouver was on, but the beverage nulls the North to a certain amount. I am looking for Tyler Texas, not Kermit. According to the NRC pattern book Tyler has a nice lobe to the NW. KCOL CO also has a null this way and they aren't strong either. 600 is not bad frequency, but KGEZ may be my blooking to a certain degree. Last night in setting the timer on 600 from :58-:02 every hour, I got KGEZ every time and a bit of CJWW a few times. That was it. No KCOL, which I heard the morning before. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Dennis, Setting the frequency on a single frequency all night, you have a lot of possibilities as cx change so much from minute to minute and with the beverage, I never know what might pop in. Unfortunately a lot of the time the same few stations block the channel night after night. I still have not gotten out to repair the beverage either, but there is no wind and the loose splice seems to make connection whern it isn't blowing around. Also I have had a head cold for the past several days and after checking the beverage last weekend in the cold, I fiqured I just made my cold worse and I lost my voice pretty much for a couple days. It has come back, but I still sound terrible. By Thursday the weather into the weekend looks great with temps near 60 and I plan to get out there with a long extention cord(s) and redo the splices for the first 500-600 feet. That is where all the stress is running it high with few supports. But I tink I will run the R8 on 1330 again tonight. WLOL never replied (call change), but now being EWTN, I can send my report to therm and they do QSL their MW outlets. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KAVT Reception Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

KDUN has been off/on/off/on a lot through the years. Back in the days of KRAF 1470, they were quite stable. Reedsport is not a big town. Maybe 5,000 and running a 50 KWer probably is not all that inexpensive. Plus I believe there are some FMers in the area, let alone Coos Bay/North Bend stations 25 miles away. The GM told me that the reason KDUN boosted power was because they needed to get their signal over the powerline hash that the local PUD would not do anything about. With 10 KW, selling in North Bend/Coos Bay, the powerline hash would cover their signal. The noise down there must be horrible. I remember driving through Newberg OR, 25 miles from Portland and the powerline noise there was bad enough to QRN many Portland stations.

Don, After I posted the tips, I also found KENI 650 and also an ID from KAXX 1020 in the jumble TOH. I just wish I could have pulled more out on 680. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KAVT Reception Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] DX Tips (For WDXR)
Tried around 2300 PST last night and found KENI-650 Anchorage nicely atop during ABC News 2300-2305. Got swamped by XETNT for a bit but back nicely with Coast to Coast show around 2307. First time noted since November. Don K. S.F. CA Patrick Martin wrote: > 780 KNOMAK, Nome, quite good at times u/o KKOH with wx and song > "Tainted Love" at 0455 EST 2/27.
