Re: [IRCA] GeoClock
Hi Sylvain, Did you ever get your GeoClock files, and get it working? Chuck Hutton kindly sent me the files for version 9, and I have gotten that working on 64-bit W7 and 64-bit W8.1 computers; my version 8.3 did not. The W10 64-bit computer went off on a field trip without me, so I couldn't test that, but I've generally found that anything that will run on W8.1 will do the same on W10. These are Professional versions of Windows, but I haven't heard of any reason that Home versions shouldn't run the program as well. (I still prefer DXAtlas though, hi) best wishes, Nick At 01:53 22-02-16, you wrote: Hi All, I recently made a fresh Windows 10 install on my computer and I was looking to re-install my licensed GeoClock but it seems that the GeoClock page doesn't exist anymore and unfortunately, I didn't have on my backup any GeoClock installation package :( Is there any recent news of this program? Despite its old "DOS" fashion look, I like it because it is lightweight and fairly easy to use. P.S. I will not shed tears if Geoclock disappears. DX Atlas is sharper looking and also allows me to add cities of import like Grayland. Aside from the theoretical $30 to register, I see no issue. And really the $30 is a request: it keeps working after the trial period although it has a nag screen. Re: [IRCA] GeoClock
Based on info found on the web, GeoClock is indeed out of production and has been since V 9.0 was released in 2009, I believe. Chalk up another hobby software which will no longer be usable due to Microsoft's insistent "upgrades" which are as much for the purpose of bringing in more revenue as anything else. More planned obsolescence. I wish there was another option for users who aren't serious techies besides Windows. Thank you guys. I tried DX Atlas but it was a long time ago. GeoClock lets you do this. *See this screen shot* https://app.box.com/s/7whf5d36pfxenfeqftue8k1zuxxewyoo from the Japan map in my copy of GeoClock. Like I described earlier with Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, this customized map is great for following the terminator across Japan when chasing sunset-at-the-transmitter DX from that region. I know DX Atlas can do some cool things like displaying propagation conditions with a map overlay, but I doubt it works at all for medium wave. I just checked my copy, running on Windows 7 Pro Machine (64bit). It's Geoclock Version 9. I had a pro version customized with my ham call and coordinates. I purchased the upgraded version about a year ago on: www.geoclock.com That site is now owned by a financial company, so no joy there. My Register page provided the following information: Geoclock 2218 N. Tuckahoe St. Arlington, VA 22205 703-241-2661 VOICE 703-241-5809 FAX (24 HOURS) You could try faxing Joe, or calling his house tomorrow. Hope that helps. Re: [IRCA] GeoClock
Hi Gary, For the domestic or TP/DU medium wave DXer, GeoClock allows easy customization via text files, without unnecessary complexity or extraneous information like CQ/ITU zone boundaries, DXCC boundaries, ham prefixes, and so on. I wonder if DX Atlas let you add MW station call signs frequencies at the transmitter location, or even draw your own boxes or shapes on the maps if desired? GeoClock lets you do this. *See this screen shot* https://app.box.com/s/7whf5d36pfxenfeqftue8k1zuxxewyoo from the Japan map in my copy of GeoClock. (City names can be toggled on off with a single keystroke in the program.) The area inside the rectangular box loads a zoomed view of the Tokyo region when clicked in GeoClock. (I've never heard of a propagation program or plug-in that works at less than HF frequencies. I'd love to know if one exists though!) 73, Guy Atkins Puyallup, WA -- Forwarded message -- From: Gary Smith wa1...@yahoo.com To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America irca@hard-core-dx.com Cc: Date: Thu, 21 May 2015 23:53:50 + (UTC) Subject: Re: [IRCA] GeoClock I wonder what the attraction to GeoClock when you can get the same thing, and so much more, with DX Atlas? Yessort of my point, Larry. One can assure the masses all one likes that all you need is to have version 9.xxx installed, but the freebie is version 8.2, and that seems to be all that's available now. One of the things I did with GeoClock back in the 90's was to produce a series of files which enabled me to display, for any DX'able frequency here all of the stations I'd heard, those which were targets, those which were heard, etc. using multiple colors of text. Those were converted to EGA format in conjunction with a GeoClock version change at least 10 years ago. I haven't needed to change anything since then and it still runs as it should. That said, there are also the space view maps which did present a problem, and I did have to obtain replacements from him, but again that was close to 10 years ago. It worked well until recently, after changing my Vista laptop with a Win 7 machine. I went trough the registering processas it should and I entered my license key. Now, the software seem having been registered but I only have the 4 demo maps instead of the 45 maps I should normally have. I emailed the author some days ago asking for help but I'm still without any answer. I'm now wondering if there's any kind of support nowadays for this program? Is there something more up to date on the market that doesthe same job, or even better? Any hints would be welcome. Thank you. Re: [IRCA] GeoClock
Thank you Nick, I've tried this software once but at the end, I've stuck with the DOS-like GeoClock for its simplicity. I may give DX Altlas a second chance though... Re: [IRCA] GeoClock
It's literally a one man operation, so there may be response delays. I have no experience with the OS changes you describe as I'm still running XP, although I'll have to move to 7 next year. GeoClock has a version for Win7, and maybe that's the difference. I am not aware of anything like GeoClock. I've been a user for over 20 years, currently running v 8.4, but I haven't checked for upgrades in some time either. I have probably a few hundred maps, but these are 15-20 years old.
