Re: [IRCA] GeoClock

2016-02-26 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Hi Sylvain,

Did you ever get your GeoClock files, and get it working?

Chuck Hutton kindly sent me the files for version 9, and I have
gotten that working on 64-bit W7 and 64-bit W8.1 computers; my
version 8.3 did not. The W10 64-bit computer went off on a field
trip without me, so I couldn't test that, but I've generally found
that anything that will run on W8.1 will do the same on W10.

These are Professional versions of Windows, but I haven't heard of
any reason that Home versions shouldn't run the program as well.

(I still prefer DXAtlas though, hi)

best wishes,

Nick

Hi All,

I recently made a fresh Windows 10 install on my computer and I was

Is there any recent news of this program? Despite its old "DOS"
fashion look, I like it because it is lightweight and fairly easy to use.

Re: [IRCA] GeoClock

2016-02-23 Thread Chuck Hutton
P.S. I will not shed tears if Geoclock disappears. DX Atlas is sharper looking
and also allows me to add cities of import like Grayland. Aside from the
theoretical $30 to register, I see no issue. And really the $30 is a request:
it keeps working after the trial period although it has a nag screen.

Thanks for the offer on 9.0 Chuck. I admit that
I don't miss Geoclock as much as others seem to,
but in the interests of science I should try it
if it claims to be 64-bit compatible just to see
if it works. If it does, I have 64-bit W8 and
W10 available for more experimentation.

My earlier version install zip file is only about
1.2MB, so if 9 isn't much bigger it might
possibly make it through as an attachment (though
simply renaming zips is often not enough to
prevent it being trashed by overzealous providers and anti-virus programs)

Re: [IRCA] GeoClock

2016-02-22 Thread Chuck Hutton
Guys:

GeoClock 9.0 runs fine on my $49 Win10 tablet.

Initially it didn't run because Windows needed to install the program NTVDM.
When I said OK, GeoClock started immediately.
There can also be an issue with running 16 bit applications on Win10, if you
are trying an old 16 bit version. If so, (although I didn't have to try it), a
"Windows setting" (don't ask me where) will allow 16 bit applications to run.

Based on info found on the web, GeoClock is indeed out of production and
has been since V 9.0 was released in 2009, I believe.

Chalk up another hobby software which will no longer be usable due to
Microsoft's insistent "upgrades" which are as much for the purpose of
bringing in more revenue as anything else. More planned obsolescence.

I wish there was another option for users who aren't serious techies
besides Windows.

Thank you guys. I tried DX Atlas but it was a long time ago. The reason
why I didn't stick with it if I recall correctly is that there was too
many option that I didn't need but apparently, this is the best
alternative I will find for now. The last time I had to re-install
GeoClock on my Win 7 machine, I had some problems and the support via
their website was almost nonexistent. It was someone on this list who
helped me privately.

Re: [IRCA] GeoClock

2016-02-21 Thread James Niven
Hi Sylvain,

I have not been able to get Geoclock working on Window 10 operating system,
I have it working nicely on Windows 7 though.
The version I have is v8.4 which I purchased a long time back ago, I don't
think it's available now.

Thanks

Subject: [IRCA] GeoClock

Hi All,

I recently made a fresh Windows 10 install on my computer and I was looking
to re-install my licensed GeoClock but it seems that the GeoClock page
doesn't exist anymore and unfortunately, I didn't have on my backup any
GeoClock installation package :(

Is there any recent news of this program? Despite its old "DOS" fashion
look, I like it because it is lightweight and fairly easy to use.

Thank you

DX Atlas can do something similar with the call signs, but it is a
kludge.  You can mouse over each city, and if you have modified the
city.lst file and loaded the new file, it will display the additional
information you've provided, as well as what the program provides.  See
 http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/irca/akita.pdf for a rough
 screenshot.  (thanks for the challenge...)

No argument though that DX Atlas' city list is lacking in North America.
Domestic DXers would not be happy.  China, on the other hand, is quite rich
as are many other parts of the world, and you can add cities yourself, but
it is not immediately self-evident how to do it, and not a quick process.

The IRCA Technical Column had a review of DX Atlas about 10 years ago:
 http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/irca/dxatlas_review.pdf, which also
describes Geoclock briefly.  Did anyone get the Professional version with
 500 maps?  I'd completely forgotten about that level of map intensity;
 probably couldn't afford it, hi.

zoomed view of the Tokyo region when clicked in GeoClock. Like I described
earlier with Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, this customized map is great
for following the terminator across Japan when chasing

I know DX Atlas can do some cool things like displaying propagation

Well yes, the old 8.x versions of Geoclock don't run on Win 7 IIRC.But
rather than blame 64 bit Windows and try to avoid Win 7, the more recent
(9.x) version should run fine on Win 7.

I suspect Bruce is right...the actual error message burbled on about
your version of Windows, 32 bit, 64 bit etc. covering all possible
error modes, barring operation after the year 2000. Chuck is of
course correct about 32 bit running on 64 bit, but really, it doesn't
matter. Apparently the program hasn't been used since I moved to
Windows 7 some years ago. Now, I'm sure there might be a Windows 98
machine around here somewhere...or maybe Windows 10 is more forgiving...

Re: [IRCA] GeoClock

2015-05-21 Thread Guy Atkins
Hi Gary,

For the domestic or TP/DU medium wave DXer, GeoClock allows easy
customization via text files, without unnecessary complexity or extraneous
information like CQ/ITU zone boundaries, DXCC boundaries, ham prefixes, and
so on.

I wonder if DX Atlas let you add MW station call signs frequencies at the
transmitter location, or even draw your own boxes or shapes on the maps if
desired? GeoClock lets you do this. *See this screen shot*
https://app.box.com/s/7whf5d36pfxenfeqftue8k1zuxxewyoo from the Japan map
in my copy of GeoClock. (City names can be toggled on off with a single
keystroke in the program.) The area inside the rectangular box loads a
zoomed view of the Tokyo region when clicked in GeoClock. Like I described
earlier with Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, this customized map is great
for following the terminator across Japan when chasing
sunset-at-the-transmitter DX from that region.

I know DX Atlas can do some cool things like displaying propagation
conditions with a map overlay, but I doubt it works at all for medium wave.
(I've never heard of a propagation program or plug-in that works at less
than HF frequencies. I'd love to know if one exists though!)

Guy Atkins

Yessort of my point, Larry. One can assure the masses all one
likes that all you need is to have version 9.xxx installed, but the
freebie is version 8.2, and that seems to be all that's available now.

Maybe you'll need to ask one of those who already own it to get a
copy. Or, run XP in a virtual machine; that's been useful for other
orphan software.

I guess this might help answer Eric's original question though, so
all the sound and fury has been to a good end.

likes that all you need is to have version 9.xxx installed, but the
freebie is version 8.2, and that seems to be all that's available now.

Maybe you'll need to ask one of those who already own it to get a
copy. Or, run XP in a virtual machine; that's been useful for other
 orphan software.

I guess this might help answer Eric's original question though, so
all the sound and fury has been to a good end.

One of the things I did with GeoClock back in the 90's was to produce a
series of files which enabled me to display, for any DX'able
frequency here all of the stations I'd heard, those which were targets,
those which were heard, etc. using multiple colors of text. I did
probably 25 or 30 of them using different color codes for the variations
within a map. I still have them, and still use them. I've been
planning on making up a few new ones for DXpedition use for TA sunrise

unique maps for us. These were for Central/West Indonesia, Irian Jaya/PNG,

usual collection of maps that comes with GeoClock for new purchasers.

Using the scripting available in GeoClock, we did extensive annotation of
the maps (using associated text files that load into the program) so that
station names, call signs, and frequencies would display on the maps in
their proper locations. By the time we were done, we had an extremely
useful mapping program for our tropical band DXing interests in the Papua
New Guinea, Indonesia, and South Pacific regions.

It was a blast to watch the sunset terminator sweep across the Southwest
Pacific, over PNG, and finally across Indonesia and listen to the DX rise
up out of the noise as sunset approached each station. GeoClock, a good
receiver, and a good antenna provided a fun way to DX through the night
 during particularly good openings.

Sadly, most of the stations we added to GeoClock are now part of shortwave

Guy….You're bringing tears to my eyes!! I can remember sitting in Dave Clark's
Frozen Cold Chinchilla Barn listening to these very stations you are talking
about!!! With all of Dave's Delta Loops, Full Wave Dipoles, and Beverage
antennas it was a virtual Shooting Fish in a Barrel experience!

With Dave, Cedric Marshall and a few times John Fisher there as well….there was
a Ton of DX knowledge sitting there beside me!! Combined with the Great DX
Antennas…..it was amazing! You didn't even need any reference materials while
DXing….Dave and Cedric knew where every INDO Station was located, what
frequency they were on (right down to the .xx) and exactly when they would fade
in and fade out!! It was almost too easy…….

I sure miss those days, and the Trips to Newmarket to DX with those guys!! I
heard stuff there that I would have no chance of ever hearing here at home……….

Anybody got a Go-Back Time Machine??.

Re: [IRCA] GeoClock

2013-09-12 Thread Sylvain Naud

Thank you Nick,

I've tried this software once but at the end, I've stuck with the
DOS-like GeoClock for its simplicity.

I may give DX Altlas a second chance though...

I rather like DX Atlas (http://www.dxatlas.com/) myself, Sylvain, but
may not fill all your needs; see what you think. The database of

it's not too difficult to add more.

best wishes,

Subject: [IRCA] GeoClock

Hi All,

A couple of years ago, I purchased the basic version of GeoClock to get
more maps than the demo version. It worked well until recently, after
changing my Vista laptop with a Win 7 machine. I went trough the
registering processas it should and I entered my license key.

Now, the software seem having been registered but I only have the 4 demo
maps instead of the 45 maps I should normally have. I emailed the author
some days ago
asking for help but I'm still without any answer.

I'm now wondering if there's any kind of support nowadays for this
program? Is there something more up to date on the market that
doesthe same job, or even better?

Any hints would be welcome.

Thank you.

Re: [IRCA] GeoClock

2013-09-11 Thread Russ Edmunds
It's literally a one man operation, so there may be response delays. I have no
experience with the OS
changes you describe as I'm still running XP, although I'll have to move to 7
next year. GeoClock has a
version for Win7, and maybe that's the difference.

I am not aware of anything like GeoClock. I've been a user for over 20 years,
currently running v 8.4,
but I haven't checked for upgrades in some time either. I have probably a few
hundred maps, but these
are 15-20 years old.

If you saved/backed up the map and data files somewhere you should be able to
re-load them. I've always kept backups
which I've used for that purpose when any became corrupted.

Re: [IRCA] GeoClock

2013-09-11 Thread Tony Ward
I am still running XP in the PC World, but most operations are now on Apples. I
do recall having to change all the suffixes of the maps  (I think) sometime ago
on one of the GeoClock updates. I bought the full version and even my own
Whitby-Centred VE3NO map, and my usage goes back 25 years or so, through many
updates. If (as Russ says) there was a version update with Win7, I suggest you
check the map-names, particularly the suffixes Sylvain.
