Nick Hall-Patch and I heard Norway one winter at about
2250 UTC one afternoon in '94 or '95... that is
2:50PM local time.
Clear as a bell on my Radio Shack DX440 and a small
external loop.
Our rule: Anything is possible at any time. No question.

The earliest I have heard a TA was in the mid 90s when I logged Germany
on 972. As I remember Norway 1314 was also in. It was about UTC. I
was using 800' Northern beverage.

Pat:

Several years ago I heard Norway on 1314 well over an hour before local
sunset here. Throughout January and December local sunset is shortly after
16:00 MDT or 23:00UTC, so I was hearing Kvitsoy around 22:00.

Mike,

When I lived in Seward AK in the 60s, TAs could be logged all day. There
was a DXer in Palmer AK that heard all of Europe, half of Africa, and
the ME all day in the Winter in the 50s/60s. But I am not sure if you
would consider DX from that far North technically a TA. I was a beginner
at the time and he was much older and told me of all the TA DX to heard
in letters. Amazing stuff, but much of the Winter was mostly darkness
too.

Yeah you're right there Pat. The further north one goes, the longer the TA
window is open. I remember Brian Vernon's reports from the 70's or 80's when
he was working up in the Yukon at a mine there, of TA's and TP's he could
hear 24/7. As you say, amazing stuff. Even on the shortest day of the year,
we still have around 7 hours where the sun is above the horizon here. Even
so, some of the stations I can hear 24/7 is still pretty amazing. KSL at
over 1000 miles for example.

Mike,

Yes, I remember the reports from Brian Vernon. Do you know what happened
to him? I have not heard anything about him in years. In Seward AK, we
had 5 hr 28 min of daylight in the mid Winter. Germany 1586 (now 1593)
was common up there in the Winter.

I have no idea what happened. His reports just stopped and I never heard any
more. Does anyone know?
