Re: [IRCA] KJR 950 Seattle HD
Hi Patrick: I share your concern, albeit in reverse: KIXI aims right at me, while I am towards the side of KJR's lobes. I checked KIXI's web site, and they are advertising only their FM HD-2 simulcast in connection with their HD radio give-away, not any sort of AM mention, so perhaps they are sticking to FM. I dropped a note to the operations manager to see what their AM plans are - I'll let you know what I hear. 73 - Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA > Scott, > > Thanks for the info. Re: [IRCA] KJR 950 Seattle HD
Bruce, Bonneville has been switching its emphasis of newstalk format from AM to FM. They did that in DC when they switched WTOP to FM. In Salt Lake City, KSL 1160 is an afterthought to its FM outlet. Just listen to their TOH IDs and you will see what I mean. According to Ken Sleeman, the transmitter plant manager for the Bonneville Group in DC, Bonneville decision makers seem to think that FM is better than AM because it can penetrate through walls etc in urban structures and supposedly a large number of their listeners are office workers. I hope this makes sense. Bruce Portzer wrote: It sort of makes sense from a business standpoint, seeing as KJR-AM is the only one of Clear Channel's Seattle stations that's not already using HD. Speaking of KJR (sort of), there's a rumor going around town that KIRO might switch to all sports, especially if they take back the Mariners games from KOMO (KOMO's contract ends this year, and they've been losing money on the broadcasts). If KIRO changes format, the current newstalk format would supposedly move to KBSG-FM. All of which remains to be seen, but head to head competition with KIRO would probably cut deeply into KJR's 2.0 share in the ratings (KJR has been sports talk for many years). Seeing as KIRO usually places in the top 5 with something near a 4.0 share, I don't see the wisdom of their going all Sports, but stranger things have happened in the radio business. Re: [IRCA] KJR 950 Seattle HD
Bruce, That would be a disappointment if KIRO changes to all sports. I would rather have KOMO do it. KIRO has some good talk shows and I listen to them often on the van radio. KIRO is the strongest Puget Sound AM signal here, followed by KJR. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

My understanding, as of a couple of years ago, was that neither KJR nor KOMO could easily go IBOC because of their proximity. But that was a couple of years ago, and we know that corporate dictates can sometimes trump sensible engineering on a local level. KJR's diplex with KGNW is less of a problem. A good modern diplexing system (and KJR/KGNW have a very good, very modern one) produces VERY clean signals from both stations using it, often cleaner than they'd be without all the filtering involved in a diplex. What's sometimes a bigger issue is bandwidth through a diplexing system - I don't know whether KJR (or KGNW) has wide enough bandwidth through the diplexer to handle IBOC well. But diplexing, per se, is not an obstacle to the use of IBOC. WCBS and WFAN do it. So (I think) do 1150 and 1020 in LA. s ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

I know KIXI has been promoting receiving them in HD, but I've only heard it in reference to 106.9 HD-2 (KWRM, Bremerton).
