Re: [IRCA] Norway to end FM broadcasting by 2017

2015-04-20 Thread Patrick Martin
I have had the Logitech UE Smart radio for a bit over a year. No longer do I
have to listen to a lot of garbage on the radio. If I want K-Pop, it is there,
Liberal Talk, it is there, French love songs, it is there, Romantica, it is
there. The UK stations are a blast to listen to. Every little community has
there flea powered AM & FM's and they are fun to listen to. Talk radio from the
UK, NZ, Australia is different. I will always DX, but with the noise issue and
all of the QRM, other than DXing, the band is not that great to listen to long
haul stations. The wifi radio fixes that and more so. In listening, it has been
a dream come true to me. You are right, no jammers to deal with. :-) A great
radio looking for //'s in DXing too.

WiFi radio is awesome -- and you get to pay for it.

And who will need jammers in the future when entire countries can be
blocked with the click of a mouse?

Andy,

Thanks. Hakan pretty much reports the same thing. I guess though it is being
discussed. I know all of the young people only seem to stream these days.

2015-04-20 Thread Patrick Martin
According the Hakan, the NRK stuff is going to the DAB band and the private
stations are still going to be using FM for at least a while. But the
handwriting is on the wall, so to speak as phasing out FM is being discussed,
In Norther America, radio will still be around for decades, but I would guess
not as many stations. I have a wifi radio and the radio is amazing. I can
listen to radio is nearly every country in the world. A lot of the European
radio is FM only, but it still is very enjoyable. I can pick a country, city,
and then go up or down the dial like I live there with local signals. Fun stuff.

Re: [IRCA] Norway to end FM broadcasting by 2017

2015-04-20 Thread Dave Marthouse
If this actually happens according to their timetable I'm
sure it won't just be internet content delivery.

Remember DAB digital audio broadcasting.

In Europe the DAB implementation is different from IBOC which has been a
non-starter here since it's establishment over a decade ago.

We don't know which way Norway will go. They could employ a system that
the British use in the 220MHZ band or the system the Germans have in L
band. Maybe the FM broadcast band will be re-purposed with an all
digital platform.

It should be interesting to see if this all comes to pass in 2 years.

They are not going to internet only but rather to digital only - either DAB
or DAB+.

Norway is already heavy into DAB, having only 5 FM's to close down.

Re: [IRCA] Norway to end FM broadcasting by 2017

2015-04-20 Thread Andrea Lawendel
Patrick,

Norway's phasing out of FM radio is being done in favor of digital radio
"multiplexes" based on Eureka 147 standard, aka DAB+ (which accomodates up
to 20 stereo or mono programs per single 1.5 MHz wide channel, using MPEG4
compression). DAB+ networks operate in VHF band III. A number of smaller
local stations will probably be allowed to stay analog.

Cheers,
Andy
