[IslamCity] Names of Allah: Al-'Alee

2005-04-04 Thread Sadia

AL- ‘ALEE The Most High
It does not befit Allah to address any human being except by inspiration or from behind a veil, or He sends a messenger who then reveals by His permission whatever He wills. He is indeed Most High , All-Wise. (Surat ash-Shura, 42:51)
Allah introduces Himself to us: Allah, the Creator of all the worlds and the sole Sovereign of the universe, is the Most High and the Possessor of the heavens, Earth, and everything in between. There is no deity but Him. High is He, Exalted above all that they associate (with Him). He is the Sovereign, the All-Powerful, and the Lord of the Ways of Ascent. Allah is Self-Sufficient, above all need.
All of the beautiful names belong to Allah, for He is the Owner of infinite beauty and infinite sublimity. A person can know Him only to the extent that He introduces Himself, and can appreciate Him through the verses of the Qur'an. In one verse, Allah describes this name in the following terms:
Allah, there is no deity but Him, the Living, the Self-Sustaining. He is not subject to drowsiness or sleep. Everything in the heavens and Earth belongs to Him. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, but they cannot grasp any of His knowledge, except for what He wills. His Footstool encompasses the heavens and Earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Magnificent. (Surat al-Baqara, 2:255)

"And if all the trees on the earth were pens and the sea (were ink wherewith to write), with seven seas behind it to add to its (supply), yet the Words of Allah would not be exhausted. Verily, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise."
Holy Qur'an, Luqman (31):27

[IslamCity] From a bathing suit to hijab!

  SALAAM,

I came across this wonderful story. Muslim women, wake
  up. We still have time.

  SOMAYYAH was
educated in a convent and as a teenager worked as a model and in cocktail
lounges. Growing up in Ireland and Britain, she tried drugs and liquor land
supported alcoholic and sometimes abusive parents. Years later the 25 year old
Irish woman moved to the Gulf Arab Emirate of Dubai where, through books
loaned by friends, she learned about Islam.
“I would go to the beach in my bathing suit and listen to Qur’an
  on my Walkman,” she said.
  “One day I
was going to the beach in a taxi driven by a Pakistani who had Qur’an on the
radio. I got there and put one foot on the ground to get
  out.
  “Then I
looked at the taxi driver and said: ‘No, take
me back home.’ I couldn’t go to the beach and take my clothes
  off.”
  Now
Somayyah, a school teacher who adopted the name of Islam’s first female
martyr, will not leave her flat without covering herself from head to toe in
hijab. Since she converted her family has refused to see her. (Non muslims are realizing the true beauty of being covered
whereas we born muslims are humiliating ourselves by uncovering more each day.
  WHAT A SHAME!)
Why is it so easy for converts to wear
hijab and so hard for us muslim to wear it. They feel
proud after wearing the hijab whereas we dont even want to be seen with
someone who wears a hijab.Converts are ready to face anything after wearing
the hijab because they love ALLAH, we say we love ALLAH but are not to going
to cover for ALLAH. Is this double standards or what. Think about
  it.
ALLAH guide us all. Ameen for surely I can
never thank YOU enough for making me a proud muslim.
  Ameen!

[IslamCity] Is the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) mentioned in the Bible?

Is the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of
Allaah be upon him) mentioned in the Bible?
=

Question:

What sort of references can I use to confirm that what
GOD intended as regards His will, and that His will has
been changed by christian scribes/translators? Also,
if you could tell me where in the Bible it speaks of the
Prophet Muhammad, does it mention his name or it is
symbolic?.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

Allaah says in His Book (interpretation of the meaning):

"And (remember) when `Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam
(Mary), said: `O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger
of Allaah unto you, confirming the Tawraat [(Torah)
which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a
Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be
Ahmad.' But when he (Ahmad, i.e. Muhammad) came
to them with clear proofs, they said: `This is plain magic'"

[al-Saff 61:6]

"Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who
can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad) whom
they find written with them in the Tawraat (Torah)
and the Injeel (Gospel)- he commands them for
Al-Ma`roof (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that
Islam has ordained); and forbids them from Al-Munkar
(i.e. disbelief, polytheism of all kinds, and all that Islam
has forbidden); he allows them as lawful AtTayyibaat
(i.e. all good and lawful as regards things, deeds,
beliefs, persons and foods), and prohibits them as
unlawful AlKhabaa'ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as
regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods),
he releases them from their heavy burdens (of Allaah's
Covenant with the children of Israel), and from the
fetters (bindings) that were upon them. So those who
believe in him (Muhammad), honour him, help him,
and follow the light (the Qur'aan) which has been
sent down with him, it is they who will be successful"

[al-A'raaf 7:157]

These two verses indicate that the Prophet (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is mentioned
in the Torah and the Gospel (the Bible), no matter
how much the Jews and Christians claim that he is
not, for the word of Allaah is the best and most
truthful of words.

Some of the things mentioned in the previous Books
are as follows:

1 _ In the Torah, in the Book of Deuteronomy
18:18-19 it says:

"I will raise up for them a prophet like you from
among their brothers; I will put my words in his
mouth, and he will tell them everything I command
him.

If anyone does not listen to my words that the
prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him
to account."

(New International Version)

This text is still extant among them. With regard to
the phrase "from among their brothers" _ if that
prophet were to be from among the Children of Israel,
it would have said, "I will raise up for them a prophet
from among them." But it says "from among their
brothers" _ i.e., from among the sons of Ismaa'eel
(Ishamel).

Secondly, it says in the Gospel of John
16:6-8, 12-13:

"It is for your good that I am going away. Unless
I go away, the Counselor [Paraclete] will not come
to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When
he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in
regard to sin.

I have much more to say to you, more than you
can now bear. 13But when he, the Spirit of truth,
comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not
speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears,
and he will tell you what is yet
to come."

(New International Version)

This cannot apply to anyone except the Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Secondly: Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy
on him) said: It says in the Torah, in the fifth book
[Deuteronomy 33:2]:

"The LORD came from Sinai and dawned over
them from Seir; he shone forth from Mount Paran.
He came with myriads of holy ones from the south,
from his mountain slopes [or: from his right hand
went a fiery law for them]."

(New International Version; alternative version
of last phrase _ the meaning of which is unclear
in the original Hebrew texts _ is from the King
James Version)

This refers to the three Prophethoods: the
Prophethood of Moosa (Moses), the Prophethood
of `Eesa (Jesus) and the Prophethood of Muhammad
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). "Coming
from Sinai" refers to the mountain where Allaah spoke
to Moosa and called him and told him he was a
Prophet. "Dawning over them from Seir" refers to the
appearance of the Messiah from Bayt al-Maqdis
(Jerusalem). Seir is a village that is still known
there to this day. So this was a foretelling of the
Prophethood of the Messiah.

"Paran" refers to Makkah. Allaah likens the
Prophethood of Moosa to the coming of the
dawn, and the Prophethood of the Messiah
after him to the rising of the sun, and the
Prophethood of the Seal of the Prophets to
the sun rising high in the sky and its light
reaching all over the

[IslamCity] The infallibility of the Prophets

2005-04-04 Thread Islahonline

From: "msapublication"
The infallibility of the Prophets

The infallibility of the Prophets
=

Question:

I would like to ask a question about `aqeedah. Is it part of
our `aqeedah to believe that the Prophets committed sins
and were not infallible?.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

The Prophets are the best of mankind, and the most noble
of creation before Allaah. Allaah chose them to convey the
call of Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah to mankind, and Allaah has made
them the intermediaries between Him and His creation in
conveying His Laws. They were commanded to convey the
message from Allaah, as He says (interpretation of the
meaning):

"They are those whom We gave the Book, AlHukm
(understanding of the religious laws), and Prophethood.
But if these disbelieve therein (the Book, AlHukm and
Prophethood), then, indeed We have entrusted it to a
people (such as the Companions of Prophet Muhammad)
who are not disbelievers therein"

[al-An'aam 6:89]

The Prophets' task was to convey the message from
Allaah even though they were human, hence the issue
of infallibility may be examined from two angles:

1 _ Infallibility in conveying the message

2 _ Infallibility from human error

Firstly: With regard to the first issue, the Prophets were
infallible in conveying the message from Allaah. They did
not conceal anything that Allaah had revealed to them,
and they did not add anything from themselves. Allaah
said to His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings
of Allaah be upon him) (interpretation of the meaning):

"O Messenger (Muhammad)! Proclaim (the Message)
which has been sent down to you from your Lord.
And if you do not, then you have not conveyed
His Message. Allaah will protect you from mankind"

[al-Maa'idah 5:67]

"And if he (Muhammad) had forged a false saying
concerning Us (Allaah),

We surely would have seized him by his right hand
(or with power and might),

And then We certainly would have cut off his life
artery (aorta),

And none of you could have withheld Us from
(punishing) him"

[al-Haaqqah 69:44-47]

And Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"And he (Muhammad) withholds not a knowledge
of the Unseen"
[al-Takweer 81:24]

Shaykh `Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Sa'di (may Allaah
have mercy on him) said in his commentary on this
verse: He is not stingy with that which Allaah has
revealed to him, concealing some of it. Rather he
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) the
most trustworthy of the inhabitants of heaven and
the people of earth, the one who conveys the
message of his Lord, the faithful conveyor (of the
message). He does not withhold any part of it,
from rich or poor, from ruler or subject, from male
or female, from city-dweller or Bedouin. Hence
Allaah sent him to an illiterate and ignorant nation,
and he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)
did not die until they had become knowledgeable
scholars, steeped in knowledge."

So with regard to conveying the religion of his Lord,
the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) did not make any mistakes at all, whether major
or minor, rather he was infallible and under the
constant protection of
Allaah.

Shaykh `Abd al-`Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have
mercy on him) said in Fataawa Ibn Baaz, 6/371:

All the Muslims are unanimously agreed that
the Prophets (peace be upon them) _ especially
Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be
upon him) _ are infallible and protected from error
in that which they conveyed from Allaah. Allaah
says (interpretation of the meaning):

"By the star when it goes down (or vanishes).

Your companion (Muhammad) has neither gone
astray nor has erred.

Nor does he speak of (his own) desire.

It is only a Revelation revealed.

He has been taught (this Qur'aan) by one
mighty in power [Jibreel (Gabriel)]"

[al-Najm 53:1-5]

Our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings
of Allaah be upon him) is infallible in all that he
conveyed from Allaah, in word and deed and in
what he approved of. There is no dispute on this
point among the scholars."

The ummah is agreed that the Messengers are
infallible in their conveying the message. They
did not forget anything that Allaah revealed to
them, except for things that were abrogated.
And Allaah guaranteed His Messenger
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) that he would remember it and would
not forget it, except for that which Allaah
wanted him to forget, and He guaranteed
to remember the whole Qur'aan in his heart.
Allaah said (interpretation of the meaning):

"We shall make you to recite (the Qur'aan), so
you (O Muhammad) shall not forget (it)"

[al-A'la 87:7]

"It is for Us to collect it and to give you (O
Muhammad) the ability to recite it (the Qur'aan).

And when We have recited it to you [O
Muhammad through Jibreel (Gabriel)],
then follow its (the Qur'aan's) recitation"
[al-Qiyaamah 75:17-18]

[IslamCity] STRESS MANAGEMENT

2005-04-04 Thread COMMUNITY AWARENESS

Stress Management

A lecturer was giving a lecture to his student on stress management.

He raised a glass of water and asked the audience,
"How heavy do you think this glass of water is?"
The students' answers ranged from 20g to 500gm.

"It does not matter on the absolute weight.
It depends on how long you hold it. If I hold
it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for
an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, you will have to call
an ambulance.

It is the exact same weight, but the longer
I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

"If we carry our burdens all the time,
sooner or later, we will not be able
to carry on, the burden becoming increasingly heavier."

"What you have to do is to put the
glass down, rest for a while before
holding it up again."

We have to put down the burden periodically,
so that we can be refreshed and are ! able
to carry on.

So before you return home from work tonight,
put the burden of work down. Don't carry it
back home. You can pick it up tomorrow.
Whatever burdens you are having now on
your shoulders, let it down for a moment if
you can. Pick it up again later when you
have rested.

Rest and relax.
Life is short, enjoy it!! Cheers!

[IslamCity] TAIBO

2005-04-04 Thread 03.05 Noushad T. V.

Respected Brother/Sister
in Islam

Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa
Barakatuhu

Taibo, a form of high impact aerobics that combines the
moves of karate, boxing, ballet, and hip hop dancing is the newest craze in
gyms and homes around the world. Taibo, which stands for Total Awareness
Excellent Body Obedience, was developed in America in the late 1980’s. The
“exercise” is a composition of music, dance, intermingling of males and
females, and requires the wearing of skimpy clothing, etc. As this trend
gathers pace internationally, Muslims are increasingly participating in Taibo
centres that have sprung up in our localities. Yes, it is permissible for
Muslims to learn self defence techniques provided that there is no
impermissible acts used to achieve this nor is there any form of disbelief,
shirk, etc., contained therein. However, the activities which this particular
art of training entails are clearly un-Islamic and prohibited. The following
are certain unlawful practices that form part of Taibo.
  Music
Among the most destructible things that cause permanent
harm to the heart is music. In fact its dangers are frightening and
catastrophic. Muslims turning to pop and modern-day disco music have suffered
sometimes-irreparable damage to their Imaan and thus bargaining the eternal
life of the hereafter for a few ecstatic moments of this worldly life.
  Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)
has explicitly warned us with regard to Music. In one Hadith he said, “Music sows hypocrisy in the heart like
water causes seeds to grow in the soil”
  (Bayhaqi).
  Intermingling of Sexes
Intermingling of sexes has engulfed the community to such a
level that people no longer consider it a crime nor is it frowned upon. To
the contrary one who does not freely intermingle is considered orthodox and
unfriendly. The foremost contravention that takes place by intermingling is
casting lustful gazes. The Noble Qur’an has explicitly prohibited strange men
and women from casting lustful gazes at each other. The ultimate crime of
zina and illicit sexual activity is initiated by the lustful glance, which
propels a person towards this evil. Without this glance the thought does not
occur hence the possibility of this evil is narrowed. With Taibo this
fundamental injunction of the Qur’an is openly flouted in the name of
  exercise, fitness and self-defence.
  Disturbing Aspect
Undoubtedly the most disturbing aspect about this new trend
is that women, who are generally considered to be upright and modest, have
become unwitting victims to this evil. While adopting the apparent garb of
Hijaab, they enter themselves, with tight fitting garments, into an arena,
which is infested with Haraam and poses a direct threat to their chastity and
  Imaan.
A fervent plea is made to those who are engaged in this
type of activity or are sending their wives and daughters to such places to
seriously consider the dangers that lurk in this activity. May Allah Ta’ala
guide and protect us all. Aameen.

[IslamCity] Imam Malik on Revering the Prophet (s) after His Death

2005-04-04 Thread Abdul Wahid Osman Belal

Warid Press <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:To:
From: Warid Press <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Subject: Imam Malik on Revering the Prophet (s) after His Death

Imam Malik on Revering the Prophet (s) after His Death
al-Qadi `Iyad said in his book al-Shifa', section "Revering the Prophet after
his death":

Mus`ab ibn `Abd Allah said:
Imam Malik, whenever the Prophet (s) was mentioned, his color would change, and
he would incline his body until those who were sitting with him felt
discomfort. This was mentioned to him and he said: "If you had seen what I have
seen you would not blame me for what you see now. I used to see Muhammad ibn
al-Munkadir--and he was the master of the scholars (sayyid al-qurra')--and we
dared not ever ask him about a hadith except he wept until we pitied him."

Commentary

Without any discussion of the authenticity, accepting this narration on the
authority of Qadi `Iyad, we can infer several important points, without taking
this as fiqh in any way:

First is that people may find such a display of emotion as that evoked by Imam
Malik strange and even consider in their minds that it is disapproved of in
shari`ah, as adduced from the narrator's words: "until those who were sitting
with him felt discomfort."

Second is that when a person is in a state of `ishq or extreme love to Allah
subhanahu wa ta`ala and His Prophet (s), he cannot be blamed for his actions
which appear in him as a result of that intense love. And this is adduced from
Malik's words "If you had seen what I have seen you would not blame for what
you see now."

Third is that showing intense emotion, to the point that it affects one's
physical appearance and actions, is not forbidden in Islam, rather, when
spontaneous and sincere, evoked by the remembrance of one beloved, is a sign of
true faith and great yaqeen (certainty). And this can be adduced by Malik's
words "I used to see Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir--and he was the master of the
scholars (sayyid al-qurra')--and we dared not ever ask him about a hadith
except he wept until we pitied him." His affirmation that Muhammad ibn
al-Munkadir was master of the scholars, is Imam Malik's way of saying that "if
he accepted to fall into such a state of intense weeping, and he was my teacher
and the master of all the scholars of Madina, then who can blame me if a
similar state obtains in me?" This is enough to show that such a display can
not by any means be considered a manifestation of shirk, nor is it bida`, but
when it appears spontaneously, from love or fear or other intense emotion, is
 acceptable and blameless.

Fourth is that such a display of emotion, when evoked sincerely and not for
show, is not limited by any specific form of action or physical effect, but is
whatever appears in a person in terms of movements, weeping, exclamations,
shaking and so on. And this is adduced from the narrator's words "his color
would change, and he would incline his body " and from Imam Malik's words "he
wept until we pitied him."

Fifth is that the use of the term sayyid for the Prophet (s) and for other than
the Prophet (s) is permissible and is an action done by, and therefore promoted
by one of the earliest great masters of fiqh, Imam Malik (ra), as in his words,
"and he was the master of the scholars (sayyid al-qurra')."

Further Narrations

Further narrations of the reverence of other great Tabi`een and pious
predecessors are found in the book of Ibn Qunfudh al-Qusantini al-Maliki (d.
810) Wasilat al-islam bi al-nabi `alayhi al-salat wa al-salam:

"It was the practice of the Pious Predecessors and the Imams of the past that
whenever the Prophet was mentioned in their presence they were overwhelmed by
reverence, humbleness, stillness, and dignity. Ja`far ibn Muhammad ibn `Ali ibn
al-Husayn ibn `Ali ibn Abi Talib (Ja`far al-Sadiq) would turn pale whenever he
heard the Prophet mentioned. Imam Malik would not mention a hadith except in a
state of ritual purity. `Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr
al-Siddiq would turn red and stammer whenever he heard the Prophet mentioned.
As for `Amir ibn `Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr ibn al-`Awamm al-Asadi (note: one of
the many early Sufis), he would weep until his eyes had no tears left in them.
When any hadiths were mentioned in their presence they would lower their
voices. Malik said: 'His sacredness (hurmat) is in death is as his sacredness
was in life.'"

Source: Abu al-`Abbas Ahmad ibn al-Khatib, known as Ibn Qunfudh al-Qusantini
al-Maliki, Wasilat al-islam bi al-nabi `alayhi al-salat wa al-salam (The means
of Islam with the Prophet, peace be upon him) (Beirut: Dar al-gharb al-islami,
1404/1984) p. 145-146.

[IslamCity] Why do i wear Hijab

2005-04-04 Thread adil naveed

By Sultana Yusuf (a 17-year old Toronto high school student )
A while back, a couple of girls in Montreal were kicked out of school for dressing like I do. It seems strange that a little piece of cloth would make for such controversy. Perhaps the fear is that I am harbouring an Uzi underneath it.Of course, the issue at hand is more than a mere piece of cloth. I am a Muslim woman who, like millions of other Muslim women across the globe, chooses to wear the hijab. And the concept of the hijab, contrary to popular opinion, is actually one of the most fundamental aspects of female empowerment When I cover myself, I make it virtually impossible for people to judge me according to the way I look.I cannot be categorised because of my attractiveness or lack thereof. Compare this to life in today's society: We are constantly sizing one another up on the basis of our clothing, jewelry, hair and makeup. What kind of depth can there be in a world like this?Yes, I have a
body, a physical manifestation upon this Earth. But it is the vessel of an intelligent mind and a strong spirit. It is not for the beholder to leer at or to use in advertisements to sell everything from beer to cars. Because of the superficiality of the world in which we live, external appearances are so stressed that the value of the individual counts for almost nothing. It is a myth that women in today's society are liberated. What kind of freedom can there be when a woman cannot walk down the street without every aspect of her physical self being 'checked out' When I wear the hijab I feel safe from all of this. I can be rest assured that no one is looking at me and making assumptions about my character from the length of my skirt. There is a barrier between me and those who would exploit me. I am first and foremost a human being, and not vulnerable because of my sexuality. One of the saddest truths of our time is the question of the beauty myth and female self-image. Reading
popular teenage magazines, you can instantly find out what kind of body image is 'in' or 'out'. And if you have the 'wrong' body type, well, then, you're just going to have to change it, aren't you After all, there is no way that you can be overweight and still be beautiful.Look at any advertisement. Is a woman being used to sell the product? How old is she? How attractive is she? What is she wearing more often than not? That woman will be no older than her early 20s, taller, slimmer and more attractive than average, dressed in skimpy clothing. Why do we allow ourselves to be manipulated like this? Whether the '90s woman wishes to believe it or not, she is being forced into a mould. She is being coerced into selling herself, into compromising herself. This is why we have 13-year-old girls sticking their fingers down their throats and overweight adolescents hanging themselves. When people ask me if I feel oppressed, I can honestly say no. I made this decision out of my
own free will. I like the fact that I am taking control of the way other people perceive me. I enjoy the fact that I don't give anyone anything to look at and that I have released myself from the bondage of the swinging pendulum of the fashion industry and other institutions that exploit females. My body is my own business. Nobody can tell me how I should look or whether or not I am beautiful. I know that there is more to me than that. I am also able to say no comfortably when people ask me if I feel as though my sexuality is being repressed. I have taken control of my sexuality.I am thankful I will never have to suffer the fate of trying to lose/ gain weight or trying to find the exact lipstick shade that will go with my skin colour. I have made choices about what my priorities are and these are not among them. So next time you see me, don't look at me sympathetically. I am not under duress or a male-worshipping female captive from those barbarous Arabic deserts. I've been

[IslamCity] Is it farz for women to cover hair?

Is it farz for women to cover hair? Any authentic hadith telling that those women who do not cover their hair will be punished?

Answer 14255

It is Fardh for a woman to cover her hair in front of non-Mahrams (strange) males. Allah Ta’ala states, ‘And say to the believing women, they should lower their gazes and protect their chastity and not expose their beauty except for what normally shows.’ (24:31) According to ibn Abbaas [radhiallaahu anhum] and the vast majority of scholars, ‘what normally shows’ refers only to the hands and face. Other Ulama are of the view that even the face should be covered. (ibn Kathir). However, it is clear from this Aayat that all are unanimous that the hair of a woman cannot be exposed. and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best Mufti Ebrahim Desai

[IslamCity] Now I Know What My Purpose in Life is

Now I Know What My Purpose in Life is
The road was long and it was not always easy, but my faith and trust in Allah Almighty has always sustained me, gathers SUSANNAH UMM HUDA
Al-hamdu lillah (all praise be to Allah), I came from the darkness to the light, as they say, at the age of 19 when I became a Muslim. How I decided to be a Muslim and the long road that I travelled is a subject that I am often asked about, so in sha’ Allah (God willing), I will try to explain it here, and my hope is that my story will be one of inspiration for others.
I grew up as the typical American girl, born and raised in the United States in a middle-class family, which was composed of my parents and one younger sister. My father was in the military, so we moved around quite a bit, but eventually we settled down in Virginia, and this was where I grew up primarily.
My family had a Christian background, but my parents, both of whom worked full time, did not have the time to take us often to church. Religion was confined mostly to holidays or whenever we would visit our grandparents. I vividly remember attending Sunday school as a small child; I remember being taught about Jesus and various other Christian virtues. However, when I became a teenager, these principles and ideas began to seem foreign to me, and I didn’t acknowledge them or implement them in my daily life at all.
My first introduction to Islam was in the ninth grade when my world history class went to Washington DC and toured the Islamic Centre there. It was a gorgeous spring day, all of us were wearing shorts and T-shirts, of course, and I remember being stopped at the entrance of the mosque. The woman told us, "You cannot enter Allah’s house dressed like this." I remember that we all laughed, especially the boys, because a moment later the woman returned with long white skirts and scarves and insisted that we wear them into the mosque. How strange, I remember thinking to myself, what’s the big deal? We were given a brief talk by someone who couldn’t speak English very well; needless to say it didn’t leave a great impression, but as a carefree teenager at the time, religion was the farthest thing from my mind.
Approximately a year and a half later, a new family moved in next door to my house. One night shortly after they moved in, I was walking my dog. When Umm Ali, my new neighbour, noticed that I was walking towards the house next to hers, she immediately approached me. She insisted in a very kind way that I come and eat dinner with them. Now it was summer time, very hot and humid, and before me stood this woman covered from head to toe, a complete stranger, and suddenly she was insisting that I come and eat with her. At first I completely refused, but she stood her ground and eventually convinced me. When I asked her why she was so persistent, she replied, "Islam teaches us to be respectful and kind to our neighbours. You are my neighbour now and I must extend to you this courtesy."
I was quite shocked by this, but somehow it put me at ease. I felt that there was a real sense of sincerity in this gentle woman. From that evening on, Umm Ali and I became the best of friends. It was a new experience for both of us: she had never had a close friend who wasn’t Muslim, and I had never had a Muslim friend, so we enjoyed our differences and respected them. She had a great sense of humour and we used to laugh a lot. I adored her children and used to care for them as if they were my own nieces.
From time to time, we would discuss religion, but it was never in a forceful way. I used to ask her about her prayers and about her dress. During Ramadan, she invited me every night for iftar (the meal that breaks the fast), though I wasn’t fasting. Much of her dawah (inviting to Islam) to me was through her actions, not her words. I began to respect and adore her so much as a person, woman, wife, and mother. It was very obvious to me that she was at peace with herself. At the time, I was still quite young, but I felt something starting to stir. It was more than a curiosity or affection; I was starting, even though I didn’t know it quite yet, to really take Islam seriously.

Islam is so often maligned in the media, especially when it comes to issues dealing with women. So many people are confused when they know that I chose to accept Islam. No one forced me – it was my choice. Islam offered me what no other religion could: peace of mind and pure contentment. I knew and understood finally what my purpose in life was.
Once I started studying in the university, I began to really think seriously about my life, its direction and purpose. What was my main objective in life? Why was I on this planet, to do what, to serve whom? I reflected upon my Christian roots, but they seemed so alien to me at that point. So I started to search.
I looked at Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism – so many "isms," but I found a flaw in every one of them. Umm Ali was still with me at thi

[IslamCity] New Muslim History: Marmaduke Pickthall

2005-04-04 Thread Syeda Muneeba Masood

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most MercifulMuhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: A Servant of Islamby Abu Ali Hadhrami
He was born William Pickthall in 1875 in London, to an Anglican clergyman, and spent his formative years in rural Suffolk. He was contemporary of Winston Churchill at Harrow, the famous private school. During intervals from living a sedentary life in Suffolk, Pickthall travelled extensively in the Arab world and Turkey. In 1917, Pickthall reverted to Islam and soon became a leader among the emerging group of British Muslims.
In 1919, Pickthall worked for the London-based Islamic Information Bureau that among other things published the weekly Muslim Outlook. After completing his last novel The Early Hours in 1920, he departed for his new assignment in India to serve as the editor of the Bombay Chronicle. Pickthall devoted considerable interest in the independent Islamic empire of India that was gradually eroded through a string of British conspiracies. In 1927, Pickthall took over as the editor of Islamic Culture, a new quarterly journal published under the patronage of the Nizam of Hydrabad. He gave eight lectures on several aspects of Islamic civilization at the invitation of The Committee of "Madras Lectures on Islam" in Madras, India. His lectures were published under the title "The Cultural Side of Islam" in 1961 by S.M. Ashraf Publishers, Lahore. For an abridged version of his fifth lecture, point your browser to Tolerance in
 Islam.
The mission of 'translating' the Qur'an had preoccupied Pickthall's mind since he reverted to Islam. He saw that there was an obligation for all Muslims to know the Qur'an intimately. In 1930, Pickthall published The Meaning of the Glorious Koran (A. A. Knopf, New York). Pickthall maintained that the Qur'an being the word of Allah (SWT) could not be translated.
Pickthall returned to England in early 1935, and died a year later on May 19 at St. Ives. He is buried in the Muslim cemetery at Brookwood, Surrey, near Woking. Sixteen years later another distinguished translator Abdullah Yusuf Ali joined him in this earthly domain.
The hundreds of thousands of Muslims that benefit from Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall's monumental work The Meaning of the Glorious Qur'an seldom realize that this work was produced in the Nizamate of Hyderabad, the Muslim ruled state in Southern India.
Pickthall, says Peter Clark in his book Marmaduke Pickthall: British Muslim (London: Quartet, 1986), reverted to Islam at a time when Turkey had been defeated at the end of the First World War, and the collapse of the caliphate in Turkey.
In 1919, Pickthall worked for the London-based Islamic Information Bureau that among other things published the weekly Muslim Outlook that regularly reported on the Turkish defense of Anatolia.
When Muhammad Ali, the pan-Islamist educator, editor of the Comrade and the leader of the Khilafat Movement came to London in 1920, Pickthall warmly welcomed him. By that time, Pickthall had already acquired a following in India, and in 1920 he was invited to serve as editor of the Bombay Chronicle. India became his home for the fifteen years.
Pickthall was also a novelist and had dispatched the manuscript of his last novel, The Early Hours to his publisher, before departing on his new assignment. Upon arrival in Bombay, Muslims especially the supporters of the Khilafat warmly received the Pickthalls. It was his love for the Khilafat Movement that led Pickthall to appreciate Mohandas Karamchand (M.K) Gandhi, the Hindu leader who in order to broaden the anti-British front had started lobbying for Hindu support to the Movement.
Muslim communities throughout India invited Pickthall to deliver Friday khutbas as well as lectures. Two years after his arrival in India, Pickthall took up the study of Urdu, the contemporary language of the Muslims of South Asia.
He was born William Pickthall in 1875 in London, to an Anglican clergyman, and spent his formative years in rural Suffolk. He was contemporary of Winston Churchill at Harrow, the famous private school, and had ambitions to join the army and the foreign service. During intervals from living a sedentary life in Suffolk, Pickthall travelled extensively in the Arab world and Turkey. In 1917, Pickthall announced his conversion to Islam and soon became a leader among the emerging band of British Muslims.
LOVE FOR A MUSLIM STATE
Pickthall devoted considerable interest in the independent Islamic empire of India that was gradually eroded through a string of British conspiracies [Muslims in India - An Overview]. Many Indian states that had been allies and off-shoots of this empire had evaded absorption into the British Indian empire and preserved a nominal independence in contrast to 'British India.' The largest of these states was the Nizamate of Hyderabad.
Naturally, Pickthall wanted to work for the Nizam of Hyderabad and when in 1925, he was offered the job of a school principal there, he gladly

of Al-Imam Al-Hussain bin Ali bin Abi Talib the son of Al-Imam Ali bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased at them all.
He was nicknamed Al-Burqu’ei in relation to his grandfather Al-Sayyid Mousa Al-Mubarqa’a.
His Quest for Knowledge:
Ayatullah Al-Uthma Abu Al-Fadhl Al-Barqa’ei sought knowledge from the following scholars:
- Al-Sheikh Abdul Kareem Al-Ha’eiri Al-Yazdi,
- Ayatullah Hujjat Koh Kamrah,
- Ayatullah Al-Sayyid Abul Hassan Al-Esfihani,
- Al-Haaj Al-Sheikh Muhamed Ali Al-Qummi,
- Mirza Muhamed Al-Samera’ei,
- Al-Haaj Al-Shiekh Abdul Nabi Al-A’araki,
- Al-Qassim Al-Kabeer Al-Qummi,
- Ayatullah Shah A’abadi, and many other scholars
The Phenomenon of Ayatullah Al-Barqa’ei:
In matter of fact, Al-Barqa’ei, may Allah have mercy on his soul, was part of a phenomenon that we need to understand and try to spread and adopt. This phenomenon that we are talking about is the guidance of some Shia scholars to Islam and their realization of the falsehood of their previous sect. Al-Barqa’ei mentioned in his book “The Destruction of the Idol” or “Kasr Al-Sanam” that he was influenced by Mustafa Tabteba’ei. Tabteba’ei had graduated from the Shia schools in Qumm, the holy Shia city, reached the degree of Ijtihad – the right to deduce fatwas from Sharia - , and then left Shiasim. Other prominent Shias who left Shiasim include but not limited to the following:
- Dr. Ali Muthfarian who was a surgeon and left Shiasim to become the prayer Imam for Ahl Al-Sunnah mosque in Shiraz,
- Mousa Al-Mosavi who resolved on correcting the path of Shiasim and in the process wrote many books including: Shiasim and Correction (Al-Shia wa Al-Tasheeh), O’ Shia of the World, Wake up (Ya Shiat Al-A’alam, Estayqathou), The Miserable Revolution (Al-Thawrah Al-Ba’eisah), and many other books.
- Ahmed Kasravi: a prominent Shia judge and writer, who left Shiasim to be later assassinated by extremist Shias, and wrote a book named Shiasim and Shia (Al-Tashayu’a wa Al-Shia), and
- Ahmed Al-Katib, a Shia who rejected the hypothesis of the birth of the Awaited One Muhamed bin Al-Hasan Al-Haskari aka Lord of All Ages and invalidated all of the historical Shia stories regarding this matter, story after story.
His Suffering, May Allah Have Mercy on His Soul:
After ordering him to fear Allah, to establish regular prayer, enjoin what is just, and forbid what is wrong, Luqman said to his son, “and bear with patient constancy whatever betide thee,” because every reformer who calls for reforms suffers from pain and is always surrounded by rumors.
At the time of the Shah, and through the instigation of Ayatullah Shari’timdari, the leader of Shias at that time, Al-Burqa’ei was imprisoned, tortured, and then exiled. Ayatullah Shari’timdari managed to gather six thousand signatures, and that resulted in expelling Al-Burqa’ei from the mosque that he was its leader. The mosque is located in Tehran. Since the Shah’s government was secular in nature, he showed indifference towards what Al-Barqa’ei was doing i.e. refuting the beliefs of Shiasim. However, the increased instigation and hatred from Shia scholars lead to cast some suffering on Al-Barqa’ei.
However, the true suffering and the greatest agony started after the Iranian Revolution. The Shia scholars tormented him, and encouraged the ignorant people to attack him. As a result, his house was attacked many times. And when the regime noticed that he is not refraining from telling the truth with great courage and that he is continuing in his activities, though in a small scale, then the regime instructed one of its followers to assassin him as they tried to do the same thing with Haydar Ali Qalamdaran, may Allah have mercy on his soul, who left Shiasim long time ago. The person who tried to assassin Haydar Ali was one of the scholars of Qumm who visited Haydar Ali in the beginning days of the revolution to kill him with a knife. However, Haydar Ali manage

  In addition
to refusing to join in the work they were under obligation by their
covenants with Allaah and by the provisions and prophesies of their books,
Israelites started a campaign to erect hindrances in the way of the
Islamic movement and to create problems for the Prophet they used to pray
for. They would engage Muslims in useless arguments and confuse them with
tricky questions and false propaganda. They also used to go to the
sittings of the Prophet not to listen, understand, engage in an honest
dialogue or discuss matters sincerely, but to amuse themselves by taunting
and saying words of disrespect. Instead of being civil, polite or genuine,
they would twist their tongues while pronouncing the words of honour and
respect in such a way that the meaning would become derogatory and
derisive. The next section guides Muslims to help them cope with Jewish
tactics, their uncivil behaviour and their crude musings as well as to
answer the questions that the Jewish propaganda was raising in their minds
and to teach them appropriate behaviour they should adopt in those
  circumstances.

104 O believers, do not say Raa’inaa rather say
Unzhurnaa and listen carefully; and the disbelievers will have a painful
  punishment. 105 Those who
have refused to accept Islam whether they are from the People of the Book
or from polytheists do not like that anything good should be sent down to
you from your Lord. But Allaah chooses for His special Mercy whom He
wishes, and Allaah is the Lord of abounding
  grace.

In the Arabian society, the word
Raa’inaa was used to respectfully beg someone’s pardon if the first
utterance was not properly understood. The Jews would say it in a twisted
manner to mean “O our shepherd” or “O arrogant fool”.  They found such taunts amusing,
but Allaah is declaring that, in reality, they were inviting Allaah’s
painful punishment. The Muslims have been told that instead of using
Raa’inaa, they should use Unzhurnaa, which was not subject to that kind of
twisting but had the same sense of begging pardon. In addition, they were
advised to listen carefully in the first place so that they do not have to
  ask again.

The they have been told that the
rancour of those rejecters of the guidance of Islam is not limited to
their playing these uncivil games; in reality, they do not want to see
Muslims succeed in any respect. But despite the desire and efforts of
those enemies to the contrary, Allaah is free to designate His bounties to
whom He wishes and He is going to ensure that the true followers of the
Prophet excel in achieving their Islamic
  goals.

  One of the
major objections the Jews used to raise against Islamic teachings was that
if the Qur-aan is also from Allaah as is their book, then why would the
Islamic commands be different from the commands in their books. While
raising this kind of question, they ignored a very important fact. There
has been a natural progression and evolution in the commands of Allaah as
they were given to the followers of various prophets and messengers in the
past. As the human society was evolving, Allaah SWT was adjusting his
commands accordingly to the needs of the people at their specific stage in
the evolutionary process of maturity. Our Prophet was sent as the last
Prophet of Allaah because humanity had matured to a level that the final
guidance could be given without any need for future changes or updates. In
addition to this natural evolution, there were many additions,
interpolations, changes and deletions that unscrupulous people had made in
the previous books of Allaah. The followers of the previous prophets had
invented their own Bid’ah (heresies), changed the teachings of the
prophets, lost some of the teachings or their meaning, etc. Now it was the
job of our Prophet SAAWS to present Islam in its pure, complete and final
form. Consequently, Islam changed some of the commands that were given to
the people of the Book in the past because they were transitional for
their stage of the evolution and now the sta
