al-Sistani
ignores Bush letterA letter from President Bush to
Iraq's supreme Shiite spiritual leader, Ayatullah Ali al-Sistani, was
hand-delivered earlier this week but sits unread and untranslated in the top
religious figure's office, a key Sistani aide said yesterday. The aide said the
ayatullah had laid the letter aside and did not ask for a translation because of
increasing 'unhappiness' over American meddling in Iraqi attempts to form their
first, permanent post-invasion government. The aide said the person who
delivered the Bush letter said it carried Bush's thanks (sic) to al-Sistani for
calling for calm among his followers in preventing the outbreak of civil war
after a Shiite shrine was bombed late last month. The messenger also was said to
have explained that the letter reinforced the American position that Prime
Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari should not be given a second term.

Iran prepared
for possible sanctionsIran is prepared for possible
sanctions over its nuclear program, even though its government believes such an
eventuality is highly unlikely, the country’s foreign minister said yesterday.
The UN Security Council has given Iran 30 days to clear up suspicions that it is
seeking nuclear weapons, and it could eventually impose economic sanctions,
though Russia and China say they oppose such tough measures. "We have readied
ourselves to deal with different conditions," Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr
Mottaki told reporters in Geneva. Western countries have refused to rule out
sanctions against Iran and US officials have said the threat of military action
must also remain on the table.

Tourists die in
Bahrain boat disaster A tourist ferry carrying more than
130 people capsized and sank off the coast of Bahrain and at least 48 bodies
have so far been recovered, officials said. The Bahraini coastguard commander
told a news conference that 63 people had so far been rescued. He said most of
those on board the boat were Asians, but passengers also included Europeans and
Arabs. Initial reports suggested around 25 Britons, 20 Filipinos, 10 South
Africans and 10 Egyptians were among those on board. Officials said the boat had
been hired by a local contracting company for a cruise. Organisers said around
150 people had signed up for a dinner cruise but around 130 were believed to
have been on board when the boat sank on Thursday night, around 1.5km off the
coast.

Pirates seize
tanker off SomaliaSomali pirates have hijacked a fuel
tanker 150km north of Mogadishu, according to port officials. The ship had just
offloaded a cargo of fuel and had left El Ade port - a site seized by fighters
with an alliance to regional commanders who killed at least 70 people last week.
Somalia's lawless Indian Ocean waters are among the world's most dangerous.
Crafts plying the waters often are attacked by armed men in heavily armed
speedboats who demand ransom for the return of the ship or cargo, which often
ends up being stolen. The piracy has often stopped food aid getting into the
poor country. Sailors have been held for as long as 100 days and a cruise ship
with more than 300 on board was attacked with rockets and machine guns last
year.

Saudis angry
over US visa proceduresSaudi businessmen have objected
to the Riyadh US embassy’s negligence of their applications for visa. No one
respond to their inquiries about interviews schedules essential for visa
issuance. The problem was raised in the Riyadh Commercial Chamber last Sunday
during a meeting with a delegation of Illinois businessmen. Despite close
relations with American officials in the US embassy in Riyadh and Washington, it
is not easy for a number of renowned Saudi businessmen to get visa due to the
set procedures. The US embassy in Riyadh specified a telephone number for
replying to inquiries. Yet, no one replies.

Kurds clash
with Turkish police Thousands of Kurdish protesters
lobbed stones and Molotov cocktails at Turkish police yesterday, in the third
day of street battles in which three people have been killed and more than 250
others wounded. The fresh fighting erupted during funerals for two young men and
an eight-year-old boy killed during Wednesday's clashes in Diyarbakir, the main
city of Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast. The boy and one man were shot dead.
The other man was crushed under a police armoured car. Some mourners, ignoring
appeals for calm from local officials, attacked a police station. Police fired
warning shots into the air with AK-47 assault rifles and sprayed tear gas. In
Diyarbakir, a city of nearly one million, most shops and offices remained shut
on Thursday and roads were blocked by barricades of burning tyres. The army
deployed armoured vehicles in suburbs to discourage
protesters.

Palestine Land Day 2006

BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights
Press Release No. (E/08/06) - March 30, 2006
http://www.badil.org

End Racial Discrimination, Occupation and Colonization

Thirty years have passed since Israeli security forces shot and
killed on 30 March 1976 six Palestinian citizens of Israel who were
protesting the expropriation of their land to build new and expand
existing, exclusively-Jewish cities. Palestinian protests on this
first Land Day were triggered by the Koenig Report, a government
commissioned study about ways to encourage out-migration of Israel's
Palestinian citizens that resulted in a wave of discriminatory
measures, including land confiscation, against the Palestinian
minority in Israel.

Thirty years later, on Land Day 2006, 68 percent of Israel's Jewish
population have stated in a public opinion poll that they "do not
want to live next to an Arab," and a vast majority is voting for
political programs that ignore the rights and needs of the
Palestinians and perpetuate an apartheid system in Israel itself,
convincing the prominent Israeli journalist, Gideon Levy, to
describe Israel on the eve of the elections as "a nation in which
racism is the real common denominator uniting us all."

Military occupation and colonization continue unabated in the West
Bank, including eastern Jerusalem. The Wall under construction in
the occupied West Bank continues to dispossess and displace people
and serves to de facto annex Palestinian land to Israel, while walls
are constructed inside Israel to separate poor Palestinian
communities from their wealthy Jewish neighbors. Military closure
has led the Gaza Strip to the brink of starvation, and exiled
Palestinian refugees are denied their right to return to their homes
and properties by means of discriminatory laws. All this, while the
victory of Hamas in the recent Palestinian parliamentary elections
is used as the latest Israeli pretext for collective punishment of
the Palestinian people and the denial of their right to self-
determination, both of which have been in force long before Hamas'
legislative victory.

Before 1948, Palestinians owned or controlled more than 90 per cent
of the land in former Palestine. Today they own or control no more
than 10 per cent of the land and more than half of the original
Palestinian population has been displaced/expelled from the country.

"This is no time for appeasement," said the UN Special Rapporteur on
human rights in the 1967 occupied Palestinian territory already more
than one year ago, "Israel's defiance of international law poses a
threat not only to the international legal order but to the
international order itself."

In light of Israel's persistent violations of international law, and

Given that, since 1948, hundreds of UN resolutions have condemned
Israel's colonial and discriminatory policies as illegal and called
for immediate, adequate and effective remedies, and

Given that the international community has so far failed to convince
or force Israel to comply with its obligations under international
law,

We, Palestinian civil society organizations, reiterate on this Land
Day our call for a broad campaign of Boycotts, Divestment and
Sanctions (BDS) against Israel similar to those applied to South
Africa in the apartheid era. We encourage civil society
organizations worldwide to follow the example of the Palestine
Solidarity Movement in North America and to make the 2006 Land Day a
day of Divestment and Boycotts.

This Campaign should be maintained until Israel meets its obligation
to recognize the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self-
determination and fully complies with the precepts of international
law by:

1. Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and
dismantling the Wall;
2. Ending its system of racial discrimination and recognizing the
fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to
full individual and collective equality; and
3.Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian
refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN
resolution 194.

At
last the Silence is being Broken, UK War-Plans are Exposed by the
World's Media

At long last, the warning cry about the Bliar's
dangerous state-of-mind
and foreign policy is being picked-up by the media. Significantly, the
recently-leaked Sawer memo and its implications are reported first from
Dubai
and Pakistan , ie Asian countries with a rather different
perspective on what New Labour's arrogant John Reid assumes to be the
world community.

When
people like Reid and Bliar use such phrases, attaching them to emotive
clarion calls for the 'defence of freedom', 'our traditional values'
and the 'protection of civilization' you can be sure it's all coded
guff. Orwellian newspeak for 'protecting the predominantly Anglo-Saxon
capitalist power of the USUK' hiding the wicked hypocrisies of a death
machine which really has no place in the 21st Century.

Bankrupt
of any true political vision, they represent forces of reaction which,
even in the face of the most tremendous Earth Changes, hang onto their
anti-evolutionary outlook on humanity. Having chosen past glories of
Empire to be their cultural theme they made a faustian deal with the
USA's new, Straussian imperialists. A deal which ensured their becoming
war-criminals.

Now, they can only spend the rest of their
miserable careers trying to justify the unjustifiable in front of a
media, once servile and now increasingly cynical of a product well-past
its sell-by date. For all the rest of the world cares the Bliars and
Reids, the Bushes and Rumsfelds might just as well address their guilty
protestations to a hall full of mirrors. One way or another the
terrible crimes they have committed against humanity are now beginning
to reflect back on them as a global judgement, sure to revisit and
haunt them for the rest of their mortal existence.

That process of natural judgement may well have begun. But the
danger is that the criminals are on the run and bound to do further
damage in an act of sheer desperation.

Was
the reason for John Sawer's leaking of a high-level memo to warn the
world of the current British government's manoeuvring of the IAEA, the
UNSC and the Big 5 to bring about a UN Resolution against Iran? For
having once obtained that, which they now have, it's a much smaller
step for the USUK to up the ante at a later date, say June, and replace
what they are bound to call an "ineffective measure" with a
punitive Chapter VII Resolution which finally gives the warmongers
the 'legality'
to conduct vicious embargoes. Embargoes which, like the ones against
Irak, will only hurt innocent civilians? Which
will give them the cover they seek to attack Iran militarily in a
blitzkrieg most likely requiring the use of nuclear weapons?

This is what the leaked memo should be warning us of.

Either
John Sawer is now so worried about the Bliar cabal's determination to
take his country into another more terrible war or th

[IslamCity] Actor Charlie Sheen Questions Official 9-11 Story

2006-04-02 Thread Alan Border

Actor Charlie Sheen Questions Official 9/11 Story http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/march2006/200306charliesheen.htm Calls for truly independent investigation, joins growing ranks of prominent credible whistleblowers Alex Jones & Paul Joseph Watson/Prison Planet.com | March 20 2006 Actor Charlie Sheen has joined a growing army of other highly credible public figures in questioning the official story of 9/11 and calling for a new independent investigation of the attack and the circumstances surrounding it. Over the past two years, scores of highly regarded individuals have gone public to express their serious doubts about 9/11. These include former presidential advisor and CIA analyst Ray McGovern, the father of Reaganomics and former Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury Paul Craig Roberts, BYU physics Professor Steven Jones, former German defense minister Andreas von Buelow, former MI5 officer David Shayler, former Blair cabinet member Michael Meacher, former Chief Economist for the Department of Labor during President George W. Bush's first term Morgan Reynolds and many more. Speaking to The Alex Jones Show on the GCN Radio Network, the star of current hit comedy show Two and a Half Men and dozens of movies including Platoon and Young Guns, Sheen elaborated on why he had problems believing the government's version of events. Sheen agreed that the biggest conspiracy theory was put out by the government itself and prefaced his argument by quoting Theodore Roosevelt in stating, "That we are to stand by the President right or wrong is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." "We're not the conspiracy theorists on this particular issue," said Sheen. "It seems to me like 19 amateurs with box cutters taking over four commercial airliners and hitting 75% of their targets, that feels like a conspiracy theory. It raises a lot of questions." Sheen described the climate of acceptance for serious discussion about 9/11 as being far more fertile than it was a couple of years ago. "It feels like from the people I talk to in and around my circles, it seems like the worm is turning."   Suspicious collapse of buildings Sheen described his immediate skepticism regarding the official reason for the collapse of the twin towers and building 7 on the day of 9/11. "I was up early and we were gonna
do a pre-shoot on Spin City, the show I used to do, I was watching the news and the north tower was burning. I saw the south tower hit live, that famous wide shot where it disappears behind the building and then we see the tremendous fireball." "There was a feeling, it just didn't look any commercial jetliner I've flown on any time in my life and then when the buildings came down later on that day I said to my brother 'call me insane, but did it sorta look like those buildings came down in a
controlled demolition'?" Sheen said that most people's gut instinct, that the buildings had been deliberately imploded, was washed away by the incessant flood of the official version of events from day one. Sheen questioned the plausibility of a fireballs traveling 1100 feet down an elevator shaft and causing damage to the lobbies of the towers as seen in video footage, especially when contrasted with eyewitness accounts of bombs and explosions in the basement levels of the buildings. Regarding building 7, which wasn't hit by a plane, Sheen highlighted the use of the term "pull," a demolition industry term for pulling the outer walls of the building towards the center in an implosion, as was used by Larry Silverstein in a September 2002 PBS documentary when he said that the decision to "pull" building 7 was made before its collapse. This technique ensures the building collapses in its own footprint and can clearly be seen during the collapse of building 7 with the classic 'crimp' being visible.   The highly suspicious collapse of building 7 and the twin towers has previously been put under
the spotlight by physics Professor Steven Jones and Kevin Ryan of Underwriters Laboratories, the company that certified the steel components used in the construction of the World Trade Center towers. "The term 'pull' is as common to the demolition world as 'action and 'cut' are to the movie world," said Sheen. Sheen referenced firefighters in the buildings who were eyewitnesses to demolition style implosions and bombs. "This is not you or I watching the videos and speculating on what we saw, these are gentlemen inside the buildings at the very point of collapse." "If there's a problem with building 7 then there's a problem with the whole thing," said Sheen. Bush's behavior on 9/11 Sheen then questioned President Bush's actions on 9/11 and his location at the Booker Elementary School in Florida. Once Andy Card had whispered to Bush that America was under attack why didn't the secret service immediately whisk Bush away to a secret location?
By remaining at a location where it was publicly

Paracha has been incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay.

Muneeza Paracha recounts the events surrounding the
arrest of her brother and father, and its effect on
her family.

At first glance, Muneeza Paracha appears to be a
normal 23-year-old. She's a student in one of
Karachi's better known institutions and tries to
manage her academics along with her duties towards her
family. Or what's left of it.

Muneeza's elder brother Uzair was detained three years
ago (March 28, 2003) in New York and has just been
found guilty on five counts of terrorism-related
charges. Less than four months after Uzair's
detention, Muneeza's father Saifullah was kidnapped
from Bangkok (on July 6, 2003) and is now being held
as an enemy combatant in Guantanamo Bay.

For three years, the family has appealed for
attention, fought for support and waited. "It's the
wait that's killing," Muneeza says in an exclusive
interview to Weekend Review. "The uncertainty, the
fears, the insecurities ... all that has had a huge
psychological impact on us."

Muneeza last spoke to her father on July 5, 2003,
after he had boarded Thai Airways flight TG-502 en
route to Bangkok to meet his American partner Charles
Anteby. "He said he was fine and the plane was about
to take off," recalls the young girl, whose e-mail
user handle is " dadz_little_gurl".

Anteby had asked Saifullah, in the last week of June
2003, to visit Bangkok for a business meeting with
K-Mart officials. Anteby had often visited Pakistan,
but this time he insisted on a meeting in a different
country citing lack of security for Americans.
Saifullah thought this strange, particularly since
Anteby had visited Pakistan several times a year in
the past.

"My mother saw my father off at the airport and that
was the last she saw of him. Later we discovered that
my father had left Karachi on the Thai Airways flight,
but we didn't know what had happened to him," she
says.

Saifullah had been abducted from Bangkok and taken to
Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, where he was
interrogated for his alleged association with
terrorists and for supporting their activities. The
Parachas had no idea of his whereabouts until an NBC
broadcast on August 5, 2003 which reported the charges
levelled against Uzair. It also said that Saifullah
was in US custody. The family still didn't know where
he was.

"Our first contact with my father was a letter through
the ICRC [International Committee of the Red Cross]
and that's when he told us he had been detained," she
says. Following that letter, there has been sporadic
contact between Saifullah and his wife Farhat, even
though she writes at least one letter to him every
week.

After over 14 months of detention in Afghanistan,
Saifullah was shifted to Guantanamo Bay's Camp Delta 5
in September 2004. "Contact has marginally improved
since then, but our letters - both incoming and
outgoing - are heavily censored and there's no knowing
whether our letters reach him at all. My mother writes
regularly, but we received a few letters from my
father in which he says he hasn't heard from us in six
months," Muneeza says.

Saifullah appeared in front of a military tribunal in
December 2004 and was declared an enemy combatant.
"This was on the basis of far-fetched allegations, all
of which he denied," she says. Muneeza does not know
of any other consequence of the tribunal hearing. As
she says, "He is still there".

Uzair's arrest

And so is her brother Uzair, who continues to be at
New York City's Metropolitan Detention Centre. At the
time of his arrest, Uzair was 23 and, in Muneeza's
words, known to have had a "good, uninterrupted,
academic record with a major in marketing". The young
man joined his father in the family business and they
took up a project that involved Uzair marketing
upmarket apartments to non-resident Pakistanis or
Americans of Pakistani origin.

"My brother's office was basically a desk in the New
York City office of Charles Anteby. It was a
transparent business. We've been green card holders
for a long time. My father's association with the US
goes back 30 years when he first went there as a
student. We lived there for a long time until we
returned in the mid-1980s to settle in Pakistan.

"Less than two months after Uzair reached New York to
work, he was picked up by two FBI agents from his
office. We've heard he is looked after well, but when
he speaks to us we can tell that despite his positive
remarks he is psychologically down. He is allowed a
15-minute call per month to us. Recently he was

A Glimpse at Islam & Sufism in the Balkans

By Huseyin Abiva (Chicago)

Introduction

The nearly six centuries of Ottoman rule over
southeastern Europe provided ample opportunity for the
spread of Islam.

Indeed, among the nations that now comprise the
Balkans Peninsula (Albania, Bosnia-Hercegovina,
Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Montenegro and
Serbia) the visible Muslim component to their
populations are readily evident.

Two of these nations, Albania and Bosnia-Hercegovina,
undoubtedly have Muslim majority populations. The
populations of Macedonia and Serbia (which includes
Kosova) are comprised of huge Muslim minorities. In
Croatia, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Greece there are
smaller percentages, but in the case of Bulgaria this
means more than 1 million!

The largest Muslim ethnic group present in the Balkans
is the Albanians, who number over 5 million. They are
concentrated in the central and southern areas of the
Peninsula and form the overwhelming majority of the
population in Albania, the Serbian occupied province
of Kosova and western Macedonia. There are small
groups of Albanians living in Bosnia, Montenegro and
Croatia who are mainly émigrés from the Tito era.

In regards to religion, though they are for the most
part followers of Islam (or the non-practicing
descendants of Muslims), Albanians have never found it
a force for ethnic unity. Significant portions of the
Albanian people still cling to either Catholic or
Orthodox Christianity, and among the Muslim population
there was further division between the Sunni majority
and the followers of the Shi’ah Bektashi (see below).

The next cultural element in the Muslim population of
the Balkan Peninsula are the Slavs. They number some
3.5 million and are the descendants of those of the
region who embraced Islam during the centuries of
Ottoman rule. Culturally and linguistically they are a
diverse group whose racial base and religious faith
form for the only common factor.

They form a plurality of the inhabitants of
Bosnia-Hercegovina (where they are known as Bošnjaks),
a majority of the Serbian-occupied region of the
Sandzak of Novi Pazar, a significant minority in
Macedonia (where they are known as Torbeši) and
Bulgaria (where they identify themselves as Pomaks).
Small pockets of Slav speaking Muslims (Pomaks) can
also be found in northern Greece and in Kosova
(Goranis).

The Turkish element of the Muslim population is but a
mere shadow of what it once was, say a hundred years
ago. In the past, Turks made up significant portions
of the populations of Macedonia, Thessaly, the Morea
and Bulgaria. At present, there are nearly one million
Turks who continue to live in Bulgaria. In Macedonia
and Greece there are some 200,000 Muslims who still
identify themselves as Turks. There are also much
smaller communities of ethnic Turks who live in the
urban centers Kosova and the Sandzak.

The smallest of the compact Balkan Islamic ethnic
groups are the Roma (Gypsy) people. They are widely
distributed throughout the region and tend to follow
the dominant religion where they reside. Thus in the
heavily Islamized regions of Bosnia, Albania, Bulgaria
and Macedonia they usually profess Islam as their
creed. In Macedonia the Roma are a highly visible
minority, especially around the capitol city of
Skopje. Historically, the Roma have (and continue to
do so) suffered from racial discrimination by their
non-Roma neighbors, both Muslim and Christian.

In the past there have been other ethnic elements that
have since disappeared due to extermination, expulsion
or assimilation into one of the more dominant Muslim
groups. For instance there were large numbers of
Greek-speaking Muslims in Macedonia, Crete and in the
various regions of Greece up until the turn of the
twentieth century. One also can find the descendants
of Circassian and Tatar refugees still living in
Kosova and Bulgaria though they have been relatively
assimilated into the Albanian or Turkish populations
amongst whom they live.

Sufism as a means of Islamic Propagation during the
Ottoman Era. As with other Muslim lands, the
historical role that the Sufi tariqats played in the
preservation and propagation of Islam in the Balkans
cannot go without notice. It can be said with all
fairness that the implantation of Islamic Civilization
here could not have been possible without the efforts
of these Sufi shaykhs and their orders.

The Sufis of the Ottoman Balkans added enormously both
to the development of an Islam of the intellectual
arena as well as a ‘folk’ Islam of the masses. Though
now a mere shadow of a once vast manifestation, the
influence of Sufism can still be felt at both the
popular and academic level among the Balkan Muslim
population. The extent of the impact of Sufism and its
role in Balkan Islam can be seen through the number of
tariqats (mystical brotherhoods) that functioned in
the region over the centuries.

The largest and most wide-spread of these tariqats
were the Hal

[IslamCity] UN Warns Against Israeli Unilateralism

2006-04-02 Thread S A Hannan

  UN Warns Against Israeli
  Unilateralism

"It will become even more
difficult to persuade the Palestinians that there is anything to be
gained from moving toward compromise," Kalomoh said.
  UNITED NATIONS, March 31, 2006 (IslamOnline.net & News
Agencies) – The United Nations warned Thursday, March 30, that Israel's
unilateral moves to fix borders without consultations with the
Palestinians would undermine efforts to establish peace in the Middle East
as the new Palestinian premier said the Israeli plan was a recipe for
  conflict.
"If the prospect of a viable Palestinian state in the
framework of a two-state solution is seen to dwindle because of unilateral
Israeli actions, it will become even more difficult to persuade the
Palestinians that there is anything to be gained from moving toward
compromise," Tuliameni Kalomoh, the UN assistant secretary general for
political affairs, told the UN Security Council, Agence France-Presse
  (AFP) reported.
Acting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he intends to
unilaterally set Israel's permanent borders without consultations with the
  Palestinians.
Olmert, whose Kadima party won the Israeli elections, said
Israel will hold on to large Jewish settlement blocks in the occupied West
Bank, dividing Palestinian areas and making it almost impossible to create
a contiguous and viable Palestinian state.
The United State signaled on Thursday, March 30, the
possibility of supporting Israel's unilateral moves to fix
  borders.
Arab governments believe more unilateral steps by Israel to
retain control over occupied Palestinian territories would kill stone dead
  any peace chances.
Kalomoh, who was briefing the 15-member Security Council on
recent developments in the Middle East, including Tuesday's Israeli
elections, underlined the need to pursue efforts to head off security and
humanitarian crises in the Palestinian territories.
"Despite the gulf between the parties (Israelis and
Palestinians), they and the international community share a common
interest and duty to prevent a security or humanitarian crisis in the
  occupied Palestinian territory," Kalomoh said.
The United Nations warned earlier this month that the
Palestinians were on the verge of a humanitarian crisis because of food
  shortage caused by Israeli closures.
Experts said Israel added insult to injury as the
agriculture-dependent territories were being sliced from the main water
resources by the Israeli separation wall.
  "Recipe for Conflict"

"Olmert's unilateralism is a
recipe for conflict," Haniya said.
Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya said in an
article published by the Guardian on Friday, March 31, that
Israel's unilateral moves to fix borders was a "recipe for
  conflict."
"Olmert's unilateralism is a recipe for conflict,"
Haniya wrote in an article in the British mass circulation
  paper.
"It is a plan to impose a permanent situation in which
the Palestinians end up with a homeland cut into pieces made inaccessible
because of massive Jewish settlements built in contravention of
international law on land seized illegally from the
  Palestinians."
Haniya stressed that any Israeli plan would prove
failure unless Tel Aviv recognizes the legitimate rights of the
  Palestinian people.
"No plan will ever work without a guarantee, in
exchange for an end to hostilities by both sides, of a total Israeli
  withdrawal from all the land occupied in 1967, including East Jerusalem;
the release of all our prisoners; the removal of all settlers from all
settlements; and recognition of the right of all refugees to return," he
  wrote.
  Double Standards
Haniya lashed out at the West's double standards in
  dealing with the Palestinian cause.
"Do policymakers in Washington and Europe ever feel
ashamed of their scandalous double standards," he questioned.
He went on: "Before and since the Palestinian
elections in January, they have continually insisted that Hamas comply
  with certain demands.
"They want us to recognize Israel, call off our
resistance, and commit ourselves to whatever deals Israel and the
Palestinian leadership reached in the past."
The US and the EU have threatened to cut off aid to
the Palestinian Authority once a Hamas-led government is in place unless
Hamas disarms, "renounces violence" and recognizes Israel.

[IslamCity] CAN WE EAT MEAT SLAUGHTERED BY A SHIA?

2006-04-02 Thread Saba Khan

Title
Can we eat meat slaughtered by a Shia?

Question
can we eat meat slaughtered by a Shia?

Answer
In principle, it is not permissible to eat the meat
of Halaal animals slaughtered by non-Muslims. The meat
of Halaal animals slaughtered by Christians and Jews
are excluded from this general prohibition. Allah
permits the meat of Halaal animals slaughtered by
Christians and Jews, that is with the condition of
Zabah in Shari’ah, which includes reciting the name of
Allah before slaughtering the animal. Kindly refer to
‘Zabeeha of Ahle-Kitaab’ on our site.

As regards the meat of Halaal animals slaughtered by
Shi’as, that depends on their beliefs. It is well
known fact that Shi’as are different from the
mainstream Ahlus sunnah Wal Jamaa. The two sects have
some very fundamental differences. It is authentically
recorded that many Shi’a scholars do not accept the
Qur’aan as is today. Literature in the regard could be
provided. Shi’as also do not accept the Ahaadith of
Ahlus sunnah Wal Jamaa, do deny Hadith Mutawaatir like
denying any Aayat of the Qur’aan which is Kufr. They
do not believe in the Khilaafat of Abu Bakr
[radhiallaahu anhu] which was established through
Ijmaa of the Sahaaba – to deny anything established
through Ijmaa of Sahaaba [radhiallaahu anhu] is also
Kufr.

[IslamCity] "We will show you Our Signs" - The Universe - Part 1

2006-04-02 Thread Adel Elsaie

Mracles of Allah - The Universe   Source : Chapter 2 of  "History of Truth - The Truth about God and Religions" Book.http://www.usislam.org/20univ.htm Studying the universe can be an overwhelming spiritual experience. We see pictures of our solar system, distant stars, and galaxies, but the human minds fail to comprehend the size and complexity of this huge universe. In this chapter, you will encounter a host of theories and names. I attempted very hard to make the presented material simple, so you can get an appreciation of the splendor and grandeur of this universe. However, if you are temporarily stunned, you are sharing the astonishment of the scientists who lived through the
development of their theories, and who at times saw nothing but increasing complexity with little hope of understanding. If you stick to it, you will share the excitement of the scientists, and the humility of the believers. If you keep asking questions: Who, Why, and How, you will have only one logical answer: God exists and He made it His Way."      From time immemorial, people have wondered at the starry heavens. On a clear night, the beautiful stars hang like shining jewels against the vast darkness of space. The parade of sunrise and sunset, the changing phases of the moon, and the silent convoy of the stars across the black dome of heaven have long proven a spectacle and a puzzle. The spectacle has inspired the artist, the musician, and the poet. The puzzle has intrigued philosophers and scientists. Just what is out there in the space? What is the meaning of it all? How did it start? Is there life out there? We don't know. But, who has any
idea of what God can do?     The spectacle of the heaven above charges the believers with humility and faith. They realize that they are a grain of dust on a grain of dust on a grain of dust. Yet, God gives us the intellect to contemplate all of this. The recent Hubble telescope discovery increased the estimates for the known galaxies from 10 billion to 100 billion, with each galaxy containing billions of stars, and perhaps planetary systems. When we discover new galaxies, stars and planets, this should make us aware of how great God is, and how little we know. God simply revealed some of his magnificence.     To ancient peoples the sky exhibited many repetitive behaviors. The bright sun, which divided daytime from nighttime, rose every morning from one direction, the east, moved steadily across the sky during the day, and set in a nearly opposite direction, the west. At night more than 1000 visible stars followed a
similar course, appearing to rotate in permanent groupings, called constellations, around a fixed point in the sky, which was known as the north celestial pole.      Observation of the stars that appear in the west after sunset or in the east before sunrise showed that the relative position of the sun among the stars changed gradually. The Egyptians may have been the first to discover that the sun moves completely around the sphere of the fixed stars in approximately 365 days.     Several ancient peoples, notably the Egyptians, the Mayans, and the Chinese, developed interesting constellation maps and useful calendars but the Babylonians accomplished even greater achievements. To perfect their calendar, they studied the motions of the sun and moon. It was their custom to designate as the beginning of each month the day after the new moon, when the lunar crescent first appeared after sunset.
Due to limited knowledge, the earliest civilizations developed inaccurate model of the universe. At about 4000 BC, the Mesopotamians, believed that the Earth is the center of the universe and that the other heavenly bodies move around it. Later, in ancient Greece, the challenge was resumed, and a new view taken of the universe. The Greek Aristotle and the Alexandrian astronomer Ptolemy expanded the nightly motion of stars across the sky from a dome to a sphere. In doing so, the Greeks took the first step towards realizing that the universe is larger than it appears. They also developed an elaborate mathematical way of describing the cyclic motion of the Moon and planets around the Earth, which, on what seemed good evidence, appeared fixed at the center of universe. The Greek astronomer Aristarchus of Samos maintained, about 270 BC, that the Earth revolved around the sun. However, because of Aristotle's authority, the Greeks regarded the colossal, heavy Earth as a
motionless globe around which the universe revolved. This theory, known as the geocentric system, remained virtually unchallenged for about 2000 years due to the widely accepted model of the universe according to the famous Aristotle. Had humanity believed Aristarchus, our knowledge of astronomy would have been more advanced than our present case.     Greek astronomy was transmitted eastward to the Syrians, the Hindus, and the Arabs. The Arabic astronomers compiled new star catalogs in the 9th and 10th centuries

[IslamCity] Islamic Ruling on Celebrating April Fool

2006-04-02 Thread Muhammad Salman Faheem

Bismillah hir Rehman nir Rahim     Islamic Ruling on Celebrating April Fool       Praise be to Allaah, we praise Him and seek His help and forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allaah from the evil of our own selves and from our evil deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides, none can lead astray, and whomsoever He sends astray, none can guide.       Lying is an evil characteristic, which all religions and systems
of ethics warn against and which man's innate common sense (fitrah) agrees that it is wrong. Those who possess chivalry and sound reason also say this.       Truthfulness is one of the pillars on which the moral survival of the world depends. It is the foundation of praiseworthy characteristics, the cornerstone of Prophethood, the result of taqwaa. Were it not for truthfulness, the rulings of all divinely-revealed laws would collapse. Acquiring the characteristic of lying is akin to shedding one's humanity, because speaking is an exclusively human trait.  (Bareeqah Mahmoodiyyah, Muhammad al-Khaadimi, 3/183)       Like many other Evils of Western Culture, April fool has become a part of our Societies. They celebrate this day by lying to their friends & relatives to make fool of them. They believe that it’s not a sin to lie in jest, so they don’t feel any guilty and enjoy fooling others. But in fact, islam prohibited lying even in Jest, Insha Allah following lines will explain the prohibition on lying in Jest and its punishment. [added by the sender] The Prohibition Of Lying Our purely monotheistic sharee’ah warns against lying in the Qur’aan and Sunnah, and there is consensus that it is haraam. The liar will have bad consequences in this world and in the next.      Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):  “It is only those who believe not in the Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allaah, who fabricate falsehood, and it is they who are liars” [al-Nahl 16:105]        It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The signs of the hypocrite are three: (1) When he speaks, he lies; (2) When he makes a promise, he breaks it; and (3) When he is entrusted with something, he betrays that trust.”  (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 33; Muslim, 59)    The Permissible kinds of lies According to sharee’ah, lying is not permitted except in specific cases which do not lead to loss of rights, bloodshed or slander of people’s honour, etc., but which concern saving lives, reconciling between people, or creating love between husband and wife.      It was narrated that Asmaa’ bint Yazeed said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘It is not permissible to tell lies except in three (cases): when a man
speaks to his wife in a way to please her; lying in war; and lying in order to reconcile between people.’”  (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1939)       It was narrated from Umm Kalthoom bint ‘Uqbah that she heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “He is not a liar who reconciles between people and narrates something good or says something good.”  (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2546; Muslim, 2605)    The Prohibition of Lying in Jest    Some people think that it is permissible to tell lies if it is in jest. This is the excuse that they use for telling lies on April 1st or on other days. This is wrong. There is no basis for this in the pure sharee’ah. Lying is haraam whether the one who does it is joking or is serious.       It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: “They said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, you joke with us.’ He said, ‘But I only speak the truth.’”  (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1990)       It was narrated that Mu’aawiyah ibn Haydah said: “I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: ‘Woe to the one who talks to make the people laugh and tells lies, woe to him, woe to him.’”  (Narrated by
al-Tirmidhi, 235, Abu Dawood, 4990).        ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Abi Laylaa said: “The companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us that they were travelling with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). A man among them fell asleep and some of them went and took his arrows. When the man woke up, he got alarmed (because his arrows were missing) and the people laughed. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “What are you laughing at?” They said, “Nothing, except that we took the arrows and
he got alarmed.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “It is not permissible for a Muslim to frighten another Muslim.”  (Narrated by Abu Dawood, 5004; Ahmad, 22555).       It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn al-Saa’ib ibn Yazeed from his father from his grandfather that he heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “None of you should take the belongings of his brother, whether in jest or otherwise. [IslamCity] Is it permitted to celebrate birthdays?

2006-04-02 Thread ~ Faith ~

Is it permitted to celebrate birthdays?

Answered by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

Principally, birthdays are not something that should be celebrated or to be
happy about. When it is someone's birthday, one year of his/her life has
decreased, and not increased. As such, what intelligence is there in
celebrating and showing happiness when a year has decreased in one's life?

Before understanding the legal ruling with regards to birthday celebrations,
it is worth remembering here that imitation of the unbelievers (Kuffar) is
something that Islam strictly disapproves of.

In a Hadith recorded by Imam Abu Dawud (Allah have Mercy on him) and others,
The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said:
“Whosoever imitates a nation is amongst them”. (Sunan Abu Dawud,)

It should be remembered here that not everything what the non-Muslims wear
and do, is Haram and unlawful. Imitation, which is prohibited, is effected in
one of the following two ways:
  a) One does something with the intention of imitating the Kuffar, meaning one
does so because one wants to be like a particular non-believer or
non-believers.
  b) Doing something that is unique and exclusive to the non-believers or it is
part of their faith. This will also be considered imitation, thus Haram
(unlawful). (See the Fatwa of Shaykh Mufti Taqi Usmani).

In light of the above, there are few situations with regards to the Shariah
(legal) ruling on celebrating birthdays:

  1) If it is celebrated by imitating the Kuffar in that all or some of the
customs that are unique with the Kuffar are adopted, or acts that are unlawful
in Shariah are committed, then there is no doubt in its impermissibility. The
lighting of candles on a cake that number the years of one’s life and then
blowing on them, playing of music, singing, extravagant and lavish spending,
showing off, etc are all unlawful and forbidden practices. Thus, if birthdays
are celebrated by adopting the above-mentioned customs, it will not be
permissible.

2)If the above-mentioned evils are avoided, then there are two possibilities:
  a) If one celebrates birthdays with the intention of imitating the Kuffar
meaning one does so because one wants to be like the Kuffar, then, as stated
previously, it will be considered imitating the Kuffar, thus unlawful.

  b) If there is no intention of imitating the Kuffar (and also the above
mentioned evils are avoided) then the ruling on celebrating birthdays will
depend on whether it originated from the religious customs of the non-Muslims
and it is part of their faith. (It can not be considered to be unique with the
Kuffar, for celebrating birthdays has become a widespread phenomenon that is
carried out in many different parts of the world). I am personally unaware of
whether celebrating birthdays has a connection with the Christian faith or
other wise, thus I am unable to give a decisive ruling.
However, I have mentioned the criterion of which the ruling will be based. If
the origins of birthday celebrations are connected to a particular faith, then
there is no doubt in its impermissibility. If, however, it has no connections
with the faith of the non-Muslims, then (and Allah knows best) it seems that it
would be permissible to celebrate it (provided the evils mentioned above are
avoided).

3)If one thanks Allah and shows gratitude for being blessed with one more
year of his life, thus expresses happiness and joy, then there is nothing wrong
with that. (See: al-Fatawa al-Rahimiyya (urdu), 6/320).

  And Allah knows best

[IslamCity] Ya Allah ! Forgive me

2006-04-02 Thread s_m_rehman

All praises are for you Allah, how I hope that you are there.
For sinful though I know I am, your displeasure I can not bear.
Never, till this moment, did I realize how much I've strayed.
Never, till now, was I more conscious of all those times when I
should have prayed.
For sins are like heavy baggage, that one carries through Life,
Why didn't I realize sooner, that Earth is but a place of sport?
Ya Allah ! Forgive me. Save me from the fire of Hell.

Ya Allah ! Protect me. From myself for my soul is weak.
Let me not falter ever, for Jan'ah is the abode I seek.
Ya, Allah! Please help me. For I don't understand and thus, I fear.
What happened to all those moments when I never doubted that you
were near ?
My actions once were guided, by my faith which, once, was strong.

Ya Allah! please guide me . What happened, what went wrong ?
Each footstep that I used to take, I took with you ever near my
side.
The Quran was my faithful companion, Rasoolallah my beloved guide.
How I yearn for those bygone days Allah, for I know that the day
comes near
When we'll each receive our just rewards, and Truth will stand
sparkling clear.
Life is like a spider's web Allah. We get caught in its tricky snare
So thoroughly are we disillusioned, time for saalat we can not
spare.

I sit here and I wonder, Ya Allah! Why did I fall so low ?
What happened to my faith Allah? Where did my Iman go?
In this earthly life of ours, so often does sin seem right.
Falsehood seems to be the truth, as if days are confused with night.
Man is an imperfect creature. And thus, Man shall always wrong.
For the road to Jan'ah is rocky, and the journey seems awfully long.
Ya Allah ! Our creator, we are all just peices of clay.
Please help us with our steps in life, and let us not lose our way.
All praises are for you Allah, I know that you are near.
I know that you have read my heart, and my words I know you hear.

East
Asian economies need to prepare for a possible collapse of the US dollar, the
Asian Development Bank says.

The
warning comes as the US
trade deficit reaches a record high and global interest rates continue to rise.

Masahiro
Kawai, the ADB's head of regional economic integration, said on Tuesday:
"Any shock hitting the US
economy or the global market may change investors' perceptions given the
existing global current account imbalance.

"Our
suggestion to Asian countries is: Don't take this continuous financing of the US current
account deficit as given. If something happens then East Asian economies have
to be prepared."

He
said because of the highly interdependent nature of East Asian economies, if
countries worked together to allow their currencies to collectively appreciate
against a tumbling dollar then the cost of adjustment would be spread.

"The
possibility of a US dollar collapse or sharp decline may be small at this point
but it would generate very significant turmoil so East Asian economies ...
ought to be ready for that."

The
Manila-based ADB is working on several indices of Asian currencies that could
be helpful to monitor exchange rate movements in the case of a sharp dollar
decline, although its main intention is to help develop regional bond markets.

Political
sensitivities

However,
the ADB is still trying to decide which currencies to include in this Asian
Currency Unit (ACU) amid political sensitivities about the inclusion of the Taiwan dollar given China's claim over the island.

The
ADB had apparently been aiming to launch the ACU - a weighted basket of Asian
currencies - before the bank's annual meeting in May, but Kawai said this would
not be possible.

He
said there was no specific launch date yet but hopefully it would be unveiled
"in the next few months".

But
Kawai played down suggestions that the ACU could foreshadow a single Asian
currency like the European Currency Unit (ECU), which existed for two decades
before the creation of the euro in 1999.

He
said: "The ECU had an official status but the ACU has no such official
status. We are not in the position to decide whether this should become a real
currency or not."

[IslamCity] The Qur'aan is a healing and a mercy to the believers

2006-04-02 Thread Muhammad Abdul-Rahman
6577: The Qur'aan is a healing and a mercy to the believers

Question:

Tell me more about quran.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

The Qur'aan is the word of Allaah that was revealed to His Prophet Muhammad
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and is recited as an act of
worship.

This definition of the Qur'aan is comprehensive.

Our saying "the word of Allaah" excludes the words of human beings or others.

Our saying "revealed to His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be
upon him)" excludes anything that was revealed to anyone else, such as the
Injeel (Gospel), Tawraat (Torah) and Zaboor (Psalms).

Our saying "it is recited as an act of worship" excludes the hadeeth qudsi
(ahaadeeth in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)
narrated words from Allaah which are not part of the Qur'aan).

It brings light and gives certainty, it is the strong rope, it is the path of
the righteous. It tells us of those who came before us, Prophets and righteous
people, and how those who disobeyed them tasted the punishment of Allaah and
were humiliated. It contains verses which speak of the miracles of Allaah and
His power in this great universe. It tells us of the origins of human beings
who are created from "despised water" (semen). It contains the basic principles
of faith which must be embraced by every humble heart. It contains the rules of
sharee'ah which tells us what is permissible and what is forbidden; what is
true and what is false. It tells us of the Resurrection and the fate of human
beings, either in the Fire in which they will burn and be among those who are
humiliated, or in Paradise with its gardens, springs, plants and places of
security.

In it there is healing for men's hearts, light and illumination for the blind.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"And We send down of the Qur'aan that which is a healing and a mercy to those
who believe (in Islamic Monotheism and act on it), and it increases the
Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers) nothing but loss"

[al-Isra' 17:82]

Al-Haafiz Ibn Katheer said in his commentary on this verse:

Here Allaah tells us about His Book, which He revealed to His Messenger
Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and which is the Qur'aan
which "Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it, (it is) sent
down by the AllWise, Worthy of all praise" [Fussilat 42:41- interpretation of
the meaning], that it is "a healing and a mercy to those who believe" _ i.e.,
it takes away the diseases in the heart such as doubt, hypocrisy, shirk,
deviation and misguidance; the Qur'aan heals all of that. And it is also a
mercy which brings about faith, wisdom and the pursuit of and desire for
goodness. This is only for those who believe in it and follow it; for such it
will be a healing and a mercy. But as for the kaafir and those who wrong
themselves thereby, their hearing the Qur'aan only makes them further away
(from truth) and increases them in kufr. The problem comes from the kaafir, not
from the Qur'aan. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"Say: It is for those who believe, a guide and a healing. And as for those who
disbelieve, there is heaviness (deafness) in their ears, and it (the Qur'aan)
is blindness for them. They are those who are called from a place far away (so
they neither listen nor understand)"

[Fussilat 41:44]

"And whenever there comes down a Soorah, some of them (hypocrites) say: `Which
of you has had his Faith increased by it?' As for those who believe, it has
increased their Faith, and they rejoice.

But as for those in whose hearts is a disease (of doubt, disbelief and
hypocrisy), it will add suspicion and doubt to their suspicion, disbelief and
doubt; and they die while they are disbelievers"

[al-Tawbah 9:124-125]

Qutaadah said, concerning the phrase "And We send down of the Qur'aan that
which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe": when the believer hears
it he benefits from it, memorizes it and understands it. "and it increases the
Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers) nothing but loss" means, they do not
benefit from it, memorize it or understand it. Allaah has made this Qur'aan a
healing and a mercy for the believers. Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/60.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (i.e. the
Qur'aan, enjoining all that is good and forbidding all that is evil), and a
healing for that which is in your breasts, — a guidance and a mercy (explaining
lawful and unlawful things) for the believers" [Yoonus 10:57]

"And if We had sent this as a Qur'aan in a foreign language (other than
Arabic), they would have said: `Why are not its verses explained in detail (in
our language)? What! (A Book) not in Arabic and (the Messenger) an Arab?' Say:
`It is for those who believe, a guide and a healing. And as for those who
disbelieve, there is he
