men are equal to women. Although this makes sense grammatically, the
astonishing fact is that the number of times the word man appears in the
Holy Qur'an is 24 and number of times the word woman appears is also 24,
therefore not only is this phrase correct in the grammatical sense but also
true mathematically, i.e. 24 = 24.

A fatigued-looking Wagiyem, 44, emerged from the makeshift tent where
she lives near her earthquake-damaged house in Sumberagung village,
Bantul.

Her sweat-soaked face was a testament to the hardships of living in a
small tent when the temperatures rose.

But what else can we do ... My house was damaged by the earthquake on
May 27. My husband has tried to forget the disaster by working as a
construction worker in Yogyakarta, the mother of two said Tuesday.

Bricks from the damaged walls of the house have been neatly stacked.
Later, maybe tomorrow or maybe next month, they will be used to
rebuild the house.

We are still waiting for the assistance pledged by the government.
How much help we will get, I don't know. The most important thing is
that we need cash assistance. As soon as we get it, we will rebuild
our house. Living in a tent is not comfortable, she said.

Wagiyem is not alone in that sentiment. Nearly all the residents of
Sumberagung village are living in tents, after the village was leveled
in the quake.

Of the 2,261 houses in Sumberagung, 1,291 were completely destroyed
and 221 others suffered lighter damage.

We've been forced to live like this. We have to accept the hardships
because this situation will not change this month, it could be much
longer, said Supanto, one of Wagiyem's neighbors.

Supanto said the tents were like ovens during the day and
refrigerators at night.

Sumberagung village head Subardan said 205 of the village's 14,150
residents died in the quake.

When the government decided to disburse cash to offset the effects of
the higher fuel prices, everyone wanted to be classified as poor to
get the Rp 100,000 a month. Now because of the quake, everyone has
become poor, including the wealthy. We all instantly became poor,
said Mugi Wiyono, head of the village's welfare services unit.

Jetis district, were Suberagung is located, suffered the most deaths
in the quake with more than 900. This figure continues to climb as
people die of the injuries they sustained in the natural disaster.

We just received information that another of our residents died. We
feel as if we are being tested. We must be strong, said Jupri
Sudarmo, the head of Sumberagung's administrative unit.

Village officials have been busy since the disaster inventorying
damaged houses and processing death certificates. All of the work is
being done in a large tent provided by the Indonesian Military because
the village office was badly damaged in the quake.

I was working from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Only lately has the work begun to
slow down so I can rest in the afternoon, village secretary Kuwat
Hadi Santoso said.

All village heads have been notified that residents whose homes were
destroyed in the disaster are entitled to Rp 30 million in
reconstruction funds.

We have also been informed that an inventory team from the office of
public works will come around to assess the damage, Subardan said.

  JAKARTA  The Muslim world should first heal 
  its internal rift and stand united to revive the glory days of 
  Islam when Muslims were at the forefront of science and 
  culture, Muslim leaders told a conference opening Tuesday, 
  June 20, stressing that mutual respect was a must for a 
  successful dialogue with the West.
  "There is still a lengthy list of conflicts 
  within the Muslim community and even between Muslim 
  communities and non-Muslims," Indonesian President Susilo 
  Bambang Yudhoyono told the 2nd International Conference of 
  Muslim Scholars in Jakarta, Reuters reported.
  Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi 
  agreed, reported Malaysia's Bernma news agency.
  He said Muslims must take action to heal the 
  rifts within the ummah so as to demonstrate, by word and by 
  deed, "that Islam is indeed a religion of moderation which 
  rejects bigotry, extremism and fanaticism, especially 
  terrorism."
  The conference, organized by the Nahdlatul 
  Ulama (NU), brings together 300 Muslim scholars, university 
  professors and dignitaries from both national and 
  international organizations.
  The first International Conference of Muslim 
  Scholars was organized by the NU in February 2004.
  Indonesia is the most populous Muslim state 
  where Muslims make up 80% percent of the 220 million 
  population.
  The NU is also one of the largest independent 
  Islamic organizations in the world with some estimating its 
  membership as high as 40 million.
  Reviving Glory
  Premier Abdullah urged Muslims to work hard 
  to revive their glorious past.
  "Our shared history is in stark contrast to 
  the current context, where Muslims are weak, with many living 
  in abject poverty and deplorable conditions, with about 50 per 
  cent of the population of Islamic countries living on less 
  than US$2 a day, barely sufficient for subsistence living," he 
  said.
  The Malaysian premier reminded the audience 
  of a time when Muslims excelled in various fields, including 
  politics, philosophy, the military, science, arts and, had in 
  fact, dominated the world trade scene.
  "We must underline the importance of 
  combating deviant ideology and develop educational curricula 
  that firmly establish the values of understanding, tolerance, 
  dialogue and multilateralism in accordance with the tenets of 
  Islam."
  Malaysia offers the image of a model Muslim 
  country, heading towards the status of developed nation with 
  huge buildings, beautiful cities and a fast track economy.
  Abdullah launched on Friday, March 31, an 
  ambitious development plan for Malaysia to become the first 
  developed Muslim nation by 2020, with a special focus on

Arabs are very proud of their identity and they are very proud to

carry the banner of Islam. We believe that our nationalism without
Islam is like the body without a soul.

Islamism, Iranian style or Al-Qaida style or the Anglo-American style
will never find a fertile ground in our midst, it is alien to us and

to Islam. Islam influenced our nationalism through the ages, and for
this reason, our nationalism is humanitarian as well. We do not
consider ourselves above other nations but we have our characteristics
and our identity that we want to preserve.

Our hope in the Iraqi National Resistance is very great to achieve
victory, a victory that will restore dignity, hope and put us closer
to liberate the entire Arab Homeland.

 The programme of Amina Wadud lecturing and leading a mixed gathering for
 Jumua'h is motivated by her incorrect perception of the role of a Muslim
 woman.

 It is commonly propagated by the west that Islam has stifled women and 
 has
 imprisoned them within the four walls. Unfortunately in recent times we
 find
 individuals who in the name of Islam seek to promote this very philosophy
 with increasing frequency. The reason is that the propagandists do not
 consider the basic aim of women's creation. The truth is that it is Allah
 who has created this Universe and its main inmates, men and women.

 The perception that is promoted is that women should also work side by
 side
 with men. In the zeal of their ceaseless propaganda, they have failed to
 reflect that if men and women were created for the same kind of work, why
 was it necessary to create them with different physical characteristics
 and
 bodily constitutions?

 Who can deny the fact that men and women have different bodily systems,
 habits, sentiments, susceptibilities and mental trends?! Allah has 
 created
 each sex with different constitutions. To declare that there is no
 difference between men and women is self deception and a revolt against
 nature, because it is disbelieving our very eyes and senses.

 The difference between the physical constitution and sentimental trends 
 of
 each cannot be effaced by artificial means, for e.g. Putting on the same
 garments or having the same hairstyle. The fact remains that the
 difference
 between men and women is too palpable to be denied and too real and true
 to
 be ignored.

 It is clear from the teachings of the Qur'aan and Sunnah that Human life
 stands divided into two branches:
 a) The domestic affairs of life.
 b) The outdoor affairs of life.

 Each branch is complimentary to each other. It is impossible to lead a
 balanced and moderate life without taking into account and meeting the
 requirements of both the branches of life. It is equally important to 
 plan
 the domestic as well as the outdoor demands of life. Mans life can be
 stabilized with the help of these two branches. If one branch is ignored
 or
 preferred over the other, life will become disorganized and unbalanced.

 For the eyes to assume superiority over the nose because it is in an
 anatomically higher position is preposterous. The superiority of the Nose
 is
 easily rectified in the absence of light. Yet to further suppose that the
 Nose is superior to the hands, since it can smell that which cannot be
 felt,
 can be cast aside when plagued by a common cold. Yet when all these parts
 are in danger, it is the feet who usher on a hasty retreat and so becomes
 the hero of the day.

 Simply put different circumstances require different priorities and
 different reactions. No part takes preference or position over the other.
 For in the ultimate act of obedient submission, the Eyes, the Nose, the
 Hands and the Feet all bow down humbly for the pleasure of their Lord.

 Allah has distributed the duties between two sexes in such a way that men
 have been made responsible for outdoor duties, e.g. Earning a livelihood
 and
 looking after political and social affairs and women have been made
 responsible for domestic duties.

 If an intelligent survey of natural peculiarities of Man's creation, it
 will
 have to be admitted that there can be no better arrangement of the
 distribution of duties between men and women.
 The Qur'aan has issued a divine command addressed directly to the sacred
 wives of the Holy Prophet SAW and indirectly to all Muslim women.

 Remain in your houses
 This verse points out that women should stay in their houses and look
 after
 all household affairs.
 Sayyiduna Ali RA and Sayyidatuna Faatima RA distributed their duties in

An Important warning in respect of 
heaven and hell
  

(128) It is related by Abu Hurairah that the Apostle
of God said: Hell has been surrounded with ease and
luxuriousness, and Heaven has been surrounded with
toil and suffering.

Commentary.-Generally, sins i.e., deeds that are to be
expected to lead one to Hell are a source of sensuous
enjoyment, while duties i.e., deeds that make one
deserving of admission to Paradise come hard on the
flesh. Thus, the ultimate destination of the bondsman
who will yield to his inordinate appetites and perform
evil deeds shall be Hell while the bondsman who will
observe the commands of God and remain faithful to Him
shall make his abode in Heaven.
(129) It is related by Abu Hurairah that the Apostle
of God said: When God created Heaven, He told Gabriel
to go and see it [as to how He had made Paradise with
its astounding boons and comforts]. Gabriel, thus,
went and saw Heaven and the wonderful things the Lord
had provided in it. On return, he exclaimed, O Lord !
By Thy Glory and Thy Magnificence, [Thou hast made
Heaven so beautiful and got ready such blessings in it
that I am sure that] anyone who hears about it will
attain it [i.e., he will be fired with the desire to
live there permanently and will again his objective by
performing the good deeds that are needed to go to
Heaven and avoiding the evil things] God, then,
surrounded Heaven with toll and hardship [i.e., He
enclosed it on all sides with the injunctions of the
Shariat to observe which calls for a great deal of
self-denial and earnest endeavour], and, once again,
told Gabriel to go and see Heaven [with the new
barricade built around it]. So, once more, Gabriel
went and saw Paradise, and, on his return, he
exclaimed, Our Lord ! By The Glory and Thy
Magnificence, now I fear that no one will be able to
attain it [i.e., the condition of the observance of
the laws of the Shariat Thou hast prescribed is so
very hard that, perhaps, no one will be in a position
to fulfil it]. Again, when God created Hell, He told
Gabriel to go and see it [and the various forms of
punishment He had put together there]. Thus, Gabriel
went and saw it, and, on coming back, he said, O Lord
! By Thy Glory and Thy Magnificence, [Thou hast made
Hell such an infernal place that] whoever hears about
it will never enter it [i.e,. he will strictly refrain
from acts that are likely to take him to Hell]. God,
then surrounded Hell with material comforts and bodily
enjoyment and told Gabriel, again, to go and see it.
So, once more, Gabriel went and saw Hell [and the ring
of sensual pleasures that had been put around it]. On
return, he exclaimed, O Lord! By Thy Glory and Thy
Magnificence, now I fear that everyone will make his
home in it [i.e., the pleasures with which Thou hast
encompassed Hell hold such an attraction for man, with
all his animal desires and propensities, that,
perhaps, everyone will yield to them and end up in the
bottomless pit].

Commentary.-The special lesson the above Tradition
carries is that the sequel of gratifying ones
inclinations and desires [which, apparently, is so
pleasing] is the fearful chastisement of Hell, a
moment of which will make one forget the joys and
comforts of a lifetime, while the end of a life, of
loyalty and submission to Divine injunctions [which
seems so hard and cheerless to our carnal selves] is
Paradise, the home of perfect felicity and eternal
bliss.
(130) It is related by Abu Hurairah that the Apostle
of God said: I have not seen a fearful calamity like
Hell that the one running away from it may have fallen
asleep, and I have not seen an attractive thing like
Heaven that the one desiring it may have slept.

Commentary.-It is natural for man that when he runs to
save his life from an evil thing like a ferocious
beast or a pursuing enemy, he keeps running and does
not think of rest or sleep till he has attained
safety. Similarly, when a person strives eagerly for a
desirable object he forgets about rest and sleep till
he has succeeded in his aim. But towards Heaven and
Hell our attitude is hard to explain. There is no more
alluring thing than Heaven, but instead of trying our
utmost to attain it, we are inclined to be negligent
while there is no more detestable thing than Hell yet
those who should be fleeing from it are fast asleep.

VILLUPURAM: A minor Muslim girl was tonsured by a group of people on
June 11 for falling in love with a Hindu boy at Kallakurichi in this
district.

According to a delayed report, the girl's father did not object to it
and indeed favoured their marriage after the 16-year-old turned 18.

The family of the boy, also 16, too agreed to the marriage.

But a group of local Muslims chided her and advised to sever her
relations with the boy. This was despite her father advising a section
of the group not to interfere as it was their family matter.

On June 11, when the group saw the two together, they dragged the
girl, beat her and tonsured her head to teach her a lesson.

The matter was informed to the district superintendent of police on
Tuesday, with the parents of the girl filing a complaint seeking
action against those who had tonsured their daughter's head.

Big drop in Israeli Arab fertility rates

The fertility rate among Arab women in Israel has declined steadily in
the past five years, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics.

Fertility rate signifies the number of children a woman is expected to
deliver during the course of her life. The fertility rate among
Israel's Muslims was more than nine children in the 1960s. By 1985, it
had dropped to 4.7 children, and then remained at this level for the
next 15 years. Over the past five years, the decline resumed, with the
fertility rate dropping 8 percent - from 4.74 children per Muslim
woman in 2000 to 4.36 in 2004. During the same period, the fertility
rate for Jewish women rose slightly, from 2.66 to 2.71.

Another relevant figure is the number of births per thousand. Among
the Jewish population, the number of births per thousand rose from
18.7 in 2000 to 19.2 in 2004. In contrast, the number of births per
thousand among the Muslim population plummeted during the same period,
from 37.5 to 33.2 - a drop of 11 percent.

The number of Jewish births in Israel rose from 92,000 in 2000 to
100,000 in 2004 - an increase of 9 percent. Meanwhile, there were
36,000 Muslim births in 2000 and the same number in 2004. The very
next year brought a drop of 5 percent, to 34,000 Muslim births.

Marya Bangee doesn't know what to believe. The UC Irvine sophomore
thinks the fact that she's Muslim is the reason she's been singled out
for searches at airports and been scrutinized by police at anti-war
demonstrations.

She's also distrustful of the FBI, uncertain whether the agency is
telling the complete story of whether its employees are monitoring
Orange County's Muslim community.

Her doubts loom a week after Muslim leaders and an FBI senior agent
shook hands and patted each other on the back, concluding a meeting
that addressed conflicting reports as to whether the community is
being watched.

Los Angeles FBI Assistant Director Stephen Tidwell adamantly denied
that his agents were monitoring Orange County's Muslim community.

The Muslim community is not of concern to us, he told more than 200
people at the Islamic Center of Irvine.

Bangee called the meeting a good start to a relationship.

But I do not think we accomplished anything as yet, she said.

The issue arose May 24, when Pat Rose, head of FBI's Orange County
al-Qaida squad, said during a meeting of the Pacific Club that there
are a lot of individuals of interest. Asked whether citizens should
be worried about activist Muslim students at UCI, she said it was
another tough question to answer.

The FBI hasn't said who is being monitored, but Rose admitted that
electronic surveillance is being used in Orange County.

Robert J. Cristiano of Newport Beach, who attended the Pacific Club
meeting, said some are misinterpreting Rose's comments.

I think it's much ado about nothing, said Cristiano, a club member
who was speaking only for himself. What I heard her say was that no
community is immune. I took it as she stated it. No group is singled
out. No group is immune (from surveillance).

Bangee's skepticism of exactly what is going on may be warranted, said
an Arab-American civil-rights activist and a former FBI agent. They
cite several instances of agents asking people which mosque they
attend and whom they visited during family vacations to the Middle East.

The Muslim community and the FBI are like two ships passing in the
night, said James Wedick, a 35-year FBI agent who owns an
investigations agency in a Sacramento suburb.

The bureau has yet to honestly deal with how to communicate with the
Arab and Muslim community and the Arab community distrusts them
because of good reason because of paid informants getting sent into
the community for less than legitimate reasons, he said.

The FBI community is upset by Rose's statements, he said.

She was probably being more candid than Tidwell would want you to
believe, said Wedick, whose wife works for the agency. Now they're
trying to repair the damage that they've done.

Ban Al-Wardi, an activist in the Arab-American community and an
immigration lawyer, said the FBI typically denies monitoring a group.

She said she's worked cases in Orange County and elsewhere in Southern
California in which agents monitored board meetings and the financial
transactions of Arab-American organizations. In addition, she said,
agents have asked college students questions about their mosque and
what the iman preaches.

She said the FBI tries to gain the community's trust on the pretext of
protecting Muslims from hate crimes and backlash.

Another question is whether monitoring is legal and protected by the
Patriot Act, which was enacted after 9/11 and dramatically expands the
terrorism-fighting authority of U.S. law enforcement.

Wedick said agents must have reasonable suspicion of some type of
criminal activity before they monitor or investigate a community or a
person. Agents invited by community members can legally ask questions
and visit mosques without needing reasonable suspicion, Wedick said.

Unfortunately there are occasions when reasonable cause has been less
than reasonable, he said, pointing to the case of a Lodi man and his
son. They pleaded guilty to lesser charges after being accused of
having connections to al-Qaida.

The four-year investigation of the Central California city's large
Muslim community began after a former Lodi resident gave erroneous
information to FBI agents. No evidence surfaced of any al-Qaida
connections.

The FBI on Friday released a statement announcing that its agents plan
to undergo training at a Los Angeles mosque to learn more about Muslim

The US Justice Department was expected to provide details of an
alleged plot to attack the Chicago Sears Tower skyscraper, in which at
least seven people were arrested in Miami.

The arrests on Thursday by the FBI together with federal, state and
local authorities were part of an ongoing investigation into a
terrorist-related matter, the US attorney's office in Miami said in a
statement.

Media reports citing unnamed officials said seven people -- five US
citizens and two foreigners, including a Haitian -- were arrested for
plotting to attack the 110-story, 442-meter (1,450-foot) Sears Tower,
the world's third tallest building, as well as other buildings in Miami.

Another person was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia, as well, according to
television reports.

ABC television said the group had been infiltrated by a Federal Bureau
of Investigation agent posing as an Islamic radical.

The individuals arrested posed no immediate threat to our community,
the US attorney statement said.

FBI director Robert Mueller told CNN television Thursday that
operations were still under way.

I can tell you that we do have an ongoing operation in Miami. We are
conducting a number of arrests and searches, and we'll have more about
that when the operation is concluded, probably (Friday) morning,
Mueller said.

Because it's an ongoing operation, I really can't get into details.
But whenever we undertake an operation like this, we would not do it
without the approval of a judge. We've got search warrants and arrest
warrants and the like, Mueller said.

The Justice Department was planning to announce details of the plot at
a news conference later Friday.

Law enforcement officials quoted Friday by The Washington Post said
the plotting was in its early states and that no weapons or explosives
had been seized as of late Thursday from the searched locations.

The arrests took place in Liberty City, a poor neighborhood north of
Miami, according to local and national media.

Residents said that the men who were arrested appeared to be part of a
cult of at least a dozen people, sleeping in a warehouse, dressing in
military-like clothing and doing exercises.

CNN late Wednesday interviewed a member of the organization in Liberty
City.

WASHINGTON, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- A prominent national Islamic civil
rights and advocacy group today called on media professionals not to
refer to seven terror suspects arrested in Miami as Muslims.

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said
media reports indicate that the suspects are part of a sect called
Seas of David.

When asked by CNN why group members refer to themselves as soldiers,
Brother Corey said: Because we study and we train through the
bible, not only physical -- not only physical, but mentally. Group
members also worship in a temple, not in an Islamic mosque.

institutions from any possible backlash prompted by the mistaken

Miami · Minutes after U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta announced
indictments on Friday against an alleged terror cell, a Muslim leader
took to the steps of the city's federal courthouse and said the
suspects were not known at either of two mosques near the warehouse
in the Liberty City neighborhood where authorities arrested them.
Ahmed Bedier, of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said he
and other Muslims feared some would try to connect Islam and the men's
alleged plot to blow up a slew of federal buildings and the Sears
Tower in Chicago.

This seems like some kind of cult group that shares nothing with our
community, Bedier told reporters of the suspects.

He asked the pressnews media not to refer to the suspects as Muslims.
Muslims don't worship at warehouses, Bedier said. They don't sleep
in warehouses.

Concerned the case might lead some to paint defaming graffiti, damage
mosques or homes, CAIR's legal director in Florida, Areeb Naseer,
asked police to be vigilant. We are concerned about a backlash
against the Muslim community as a result of these arrests, Naseer said.

Incidents of vandalism against Muslim shops, mosques and community
centers increased after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New
York City and Washington, D.C., which also prompted authorities to
search Arab-Americans at airport security checkpoints, community
leaders said.

Law enforcement officials sought to preempt any negative, generalized
reactions.

Today's indictment is against individuals. It's not against a
