Re: Bismillah [IslamCity] Top 5 skills to teach your kids this summer
Dear Friends, Brothers & Sisters, Thank you for sharing these simple, but remarkably useful and relevant 5 skills that all parents should strive to teach their children. Equally important is the fact that all five skills are strongly and deeply rooted in Islam's value system. It is a perfect combination of "practicality" and "spirituality." Regards, Ibrahim Hayani . [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Top 5 skills to teach your kids this summer While we want our kids to relax after a grueling school year, it's important their brains don't turn to mush while school's out. There are many productive things kids can do, but here is our list of top five skills they should learn to succeed in school and beyond. 1. Learn CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) "And if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people" (Quran 5:32) What could be a more useful skill than one that helps preserves life itself? Check out your local Red Cross <http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=1049722640&msgid=30786749&act=SJEJ&c=68038&admin=0&destination=http://www.redcross.ca> to find out where and when the next CPR class is being offered. 2. Writing a letter to the editor This teaches assertiveness, clarity in thought, and basic writing skills all in one. All it requires is being able to write simple English. Find an article that your child feels strongly about in the local newspaper. Discuss it first, then put your thoughts down on paper. Then help him or her compose a letter to the editor and send it off. If it gets published, post it up on the fridge! 3. Swimming Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, emphasized teaching children how to swim. It is not only great exercise and fun, but it could also save your life. Check out your local park district or gym for lessons. 4. Managing money Help your kids avoid problems like debt, impulsive shopping, and overspending by teaching them money management skills this summer. If you already don't, start giving your child a weekly allowance. Then, help him or her draft a budget of how to spend and save. Also, make sure they give to charity. 5. Volunteering for a cause Giving and not receiving any monetary return is a skill critical in our increasingly materialistic culture. Assess your child's skills, talents, and interests, and find a volunteer opportunity for him or her this summer. Some ideas include: helping peace and justice groups; helping younger kids learn English; making and delivering meals to an elderly person who cannot get out much; writing articles for a non-profit organization's website or helping with its technical aspects; answering phone calls, etc. Source: "Top 10 skills to teach your kids this summer <http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=1049722640&msgid=30786749&act=SJEJ&c=68038&admin=0&destination=http://www.soundvision.com/info/summer/top10skills.asp>" - Samana Siddiqui O Allah! Re: Bismillah [IslamCity] DR. ANWAR IBRAHIM: Open Letter from Islamic scholars around the world
Dear Brothers & Sisters, Thank you very much for sharing this exceedingly important and inspiring Open Letter from Islamic Scholars concerning the unfortunate, indeed tragic, accusations against the the honorable brother Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia. The remarkable and admirable achievements of Malaysia - economically, socially, politically, and technologically - over the past few decades have been a major source of pride and self-confidence for Muslims throughout the world. This is precisely why the demeaning and disgraceful treatment of the honorable Dr. Anwar Ibrahim by the Malaysian authorities has also been a source of deep sadness and disappointment for all Muslims virtually all of whom have developed strong and enduring affinity to the noble people of Malaysia. We do hope, and pray, for a speedy and just ending to such a graceless ordeal. Ibrahim Hayani Professor of Economics, Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Islahonline wrote: In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful May Peace and Blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad and his kin 'Make peace between them justly, and act equitably. Loo! Allah loveth the equitable. / The believers are naught else than brothers. Therefore make peace between your brethren and observe your duty to Allah that perhaps ye may obtain mercy.' (The Holy Quran, Al-Hujurat, 49:9-10) OPEN LETTER CONCERNING DATUK SERI DR. ANWAR IBRAHIM Al-Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu, We, the undersigned, believe the honorable brother Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim to be of the highest ethical and moral integrity, a devout Muslim and a devoted father and husband. He is universally recognized as an advocate for justice and fairness, and he has a long history of promoting Islam and championing Islamic ethical and charitable causes. We are deeply concerned about the physical safety and freedom of our respected brother Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim. We are troubled by the unsubstantiated and clearly scurrilous claims made against him and his character. Allah says in the Holy Quran: 'O ye who believe! Shun much suspicion; for lo! some suspicion is a crime. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Ye abhor that (so abhor the other)! And keep your duty (to Allah). Lo! Allah is Relenting, Merciful. ' (The Holy Quran, Al-Hujurat, 49:12) Our beloved Malaysia is today one of the leading countries of the Muslim Ummah. It is an example of a successful modern Islamic country, and in many ways a model and example for other Muslim countries. This has been due to the Grace of Allah and then largely to the historical and invaluable efforts and contributions made by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammed and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi (among others). Every Muslim who knows anything about Malaysia is proud and appreciative of these efforts. Equally, every Muslim who knows Malaysian politics is appreciative of the formidable political courage in leadership exhibited by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammed during his time as Prime Minister of Malaysia and of the example of personal piety and forbearance that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi has given the Ummah today. Indeed, perhaps precisely because of Malaysia's prominence within the Ummah and the world, we would like to point out that the global Muslim community is paying close attention to the way our respected and honorable brother Dr. Anwar Ibrahim is treated. We have no wish to interfere in the internal politics of Malaysia, or in civil and criminal accusations within the country, which we reiterate are ultimately the business only of the Malaysian state and people. However, the spectacle, ten years ago, of our respected brother Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim sitting patiently in court after having been personally and illegally beaten up by then Police Chief of Malaysia is still fresh within our minds as a travesty of justice and impartiality under the law in a leading Muslim country. We are all still ashamed of that image, which will ever be indelibly engraved in our memories. So we remind our bothers in Malaysia that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that justice is the very goal of government in Islam. And Allah Himself says in the Holy Quran: 'Say: My Lord enjoineth justice …' (Al-Araaf, 7:29) Thus we feel that we have a right — and indeed, an obligation under Islam — to strongly urge the Malaysian authorities to facilitate a swift, transparent and just resolution to this issue and resolutely ensure the safety, freedom and physical well-being of our honorable and respected brother Anwar Ibrahim. Allah says in the Holy Quran: 'The Truth is from thy Lord (O Muhammad), so be not thou of those who waver.' (Al-Baqarah, 2:147) Moreover, given the po

What a brilliant idea! It certainly deserves serious consideration on the part of all peace-loving people in this troubled and troubling world of ours, especially in the United States where it matters the most. Re-locating the racist settlers and their Zionist supporters from Palestine, where they are hated and rejected the most because of their illegal usurpation of the land, to the United States (the new and certainly more prosperous Promised Land) seems to be a win-win proposition. The re-settled Zionist settlers would be able to enjoy far higher standard of living in the United States (and engage in as much hate mongering as they want) than in occupied Palestine because the American taxpayers won't need to pay the extra costs of transferring money form the US to Israel, but instead all this money would be invested in the US itself. At the same time, the native Palestinian Arabs, be they Muslims, Christians, Jews, or what have you, would be able to return to their land and start building their shattered lives in their beloved homeland, Palestine. Re: Bismillah [IslamCity] Intrafaith Q&A on Sunni/Shi'i---Islamic Horizons (An ISNA Publication, www.ISNA.net)
Dear Brothers & Sisters, Thank you for sharing this highly informative, balanced, and useful material pertaining to "Interfaith Q& A " related to the the two major branches of the one single Muslim tree. It was heartening to learn that the vast majority of North American Muslims prefer to identify themselves as Muslims, rather than on the basis of sectarian affiliation. This bodes well for Islam and Muslims in North America and beyond. In order to promote better understanding among Muslims who come from virtually every corner of the globe, carrying, as they do, a variety of cultural and ethnic norms and traditions (that add to the richness and vibrancy of Islamic civilization, but are invariably confused with Islam itself, e.g., ways of dressing), it would be very useful, indeed vital, to encourage Muslims to visit each others' institutions and participate in each others' activities, including celebrations/festivities, Friday Prayers, conferences, workshops, social and political events, and recreational activities. The North American Muslims have, perhaps for the first time in Islamic history, the unique opportunity of "getting to know each other" and celebrate their "Unity within Diversity" in a free, open, and infinitely tolerant environment. The CHALLENGES are real, serious, and multidimensional, but the REWARDS could not possibly be greater or more exciting and/or invigorating. Is it accurate to speak of "Sunni Islam" and "Shi'i Islam"? Muslims avoid identifying the Sunni and Shi`i traditions as different "Islams." But the two traditions, which developed over the course of centuries, shaped Muslim religious thought and practice. What are their doctrinal com¬monalities? Both branches share the same foundational religious beliefs rooted in monotheism, Muham¬mad's prophethood, a singular Qu'anic text, and a belief in fi¬nal judgment. They agree on the core fundamentals of Islam: the six articles of belief (God, angels, scriptures, prophets, the next life, and destiny) and the five pillars of practice (testimo¬ny of faith, prayer, fasting, giv¬ing alms, and pilgrimage). What are the important differ¬ences between them? Mainstream Shi'is believe in the doctrine of the Imamate, name¬ly, that certain descendants of the Prophet's family provided the ultimate, legitimate source of guidance after his death. This doctrine impacted how the Shi`i scholars evaluated the authenticity of hadiths as well as their respective views of Islamic ju¬risprudence. Over time, both branches of Islam developed parallel institutions of learning and a number of distinctive religious practices. Was the origin of these two branches religious or political in nature? Shi`i scholars believe that the community's leadership should have remained within the Prophet's family: in the hands of Ali, the Prophet's cousin and husband of his daughter Fatimah. An early community of Shi'is considered Ali to be the first Imam. This idea was sub¬sequently expressed in the doc¬trine of the Imamate a central defining feature of Shi`i doc¬trine. Specifically, the Shi'is be¬lieve that the issue of leadership is religious in nature and that the Prophet explicitly named Ali as his successor. Sunni scholars trace the Shi`i commu¬nity's genesis to what they con¬sider to be political arguments about leadership after the Prophet's demise. They argue that many Companions sup¬ported the leadership of Abu Bakr, one of the Prophet's clos¬est early fo

Re: Bismillah [IslamCity] Eid celebrations--Londoners Gather in Trafalgar Square
Salam Brothers & Sisters, Thank you for sharing this splendid article about Britain's Muslim celebration of Eid Al-Fitr. This is an inspiring initiative that we the Muslims of Canada should try to emulate by organizing similar festivities in the main squares of all major Canadian urban centres, including the Federal Capital Ottawa and the Provincial Capitals of all the provinces of Canada. Within this context, it would be wonderful, too, if Canadian Muslims were to work with Provincial Governments for the purpose of installing Crescents (made of solid metal, with 29-30 lights that can be turned on at night for each day of the Holy Month of Ramadan) at the garden of each Provincial Parliament Building to celebrate the entire month of Ramadan. (For each day of the month, one extra light is turned on until the entire Crescent, with its full 29-30 lights sparking at the end of the Month, adding EID MUBARAK on the day of the Eid, declaring the arrival of the Eid). This would be absolutely marvelous. Among other things, such a remarkable project would be a confirmation of the fact that: Islam in Canada is here to Stay! For the second consecutive year, London once again hosted the `Eid-in-the-Square celebrations to commemorate `Eid Al-Fitr and the ending of the holy month of Ramadan on Saturday, October 20. Trafalgar Square was transformed into a carpet of celebration as Muslims and non-Muslims alike descended upon the British landmark to use this cultural extravaganza to celebrate `Eid with the wider UK and global community. Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, who has been supporting `Eid in the Square along with similar faith-based London celebrations, said, "Unity is a key theme of Ramadan and `Eid day celebrations as they transcend ethnic, cultural, and religious boundaries and bring together people from all corners of the world to focus on their faith and serve as a reminder of the importance of peace, compassion, and charity — values common to all humanity." "`Eid celebrations in Trafalgar Square provide an opportunity for Muslims and non-Muslims to unite and experience the cultural richness and diversity of Islam." The program was really a catchy one: An array of Muslim performers and entertainers including singers Sami Yusuf, Hamza Robertson, Nazeel Azami, and the band Aashiq-al-Rasul were there, in addition to the hip hop duo Poetic Pilgrimage, who performed a set of their thought-provoking raps as young and old alike cheered them on. Activities during the course of the afternoon included fundraising by UK Muslim charities, henna painting for women, and advice stalls by organizations — such as UNICEF — and the Metropolitan Police. In addition, a comedy act by South London-Somali Prince Abdi entertained the thousands of attendees during the afternoon of this one-day celebration. The secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), Dr. Muhammad Abdul Bari, provided a satellite-linkup message to the celebrations at Trafalgar Square. Dr. Bari said, "I am delighted to support the celebration of the festival of `Eid Al-Fitr at the heart of our capital, Trafalgar Square. London is a global city, and Muslim Londoners represent the diversity and richness of the Muslim world." "`Eid unites human beings in common joy. It reminds us of the importance of harmony, human equality, and compassion for all. London is a great world city, where cultures and communities come together to contribute to its success. Muslim Londoners are rightly proud of London's success story, and long may it continue." `Eid in the Square was a joint initiative between humanitarian charity, Islamic Relief (IR), and the MCB. Re: Bismillah [IslamCity] My Islam: Freedom and Responsibility
Salam Brothers & Sisters, Thank you for sharing this exceedingly inspiring and engaging article by Prof. Ingrid Mattson. It should be a "must" reading for all truth-seakers, be they Muslims or non-Muslims. It should be given the widest circulation possible, too. JAZAKUMU ALLAHU KHAIRAN, Ibrahim Hayani [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: by INGRID MATTSON Muslims in America today seem to have lost the right to be individuals. We are treated as a collectivity - responsible as a group for any crime committed by another Muslim or done in the name of Islam. Shortly after 9/11, I wrote an article stating that Muslims have the greatest obligation to reject terrorism and political violence committed in the name of Islam. I still believe this is the case. Islam does not have a centralized authority; there is no universally recognized council of scholars or clerics who speak on behalf of all Muslims. With freedom from clerical authority, however, comes the responsibility to engage in the debate over the true meaning of Islam. Islamic law states that silence is an indication of consent. If Muslims do not reject the perverted interpretations of the Qur'an proffered by terrorists, they will have shirked their responsibility to define the real meaning of Islam. At the same time, clarifying our own position does not mean that we have to "speak out" against each and every statement issued by terrorists or every criminal action taken by groups claiming to represent Muslim interests. Once we have defined what we stand for, and what we stand against, then any particular action that violates those guidelines are clearly rejected by us. American Muslim organizations have made extraordinary efforts to publicize their rejection of terrorism and extremism in the name of Islam: we have organized petitions, written fatwas and position papers, distributed brochures, held conferences, organized press briefings, published op-eds, spoken on the radio and television. Still, we are asked, "Why have moderate Muslims not spoken out against the extremists?" We have spoken, but we have not been heard-primarily because good news does not get much coverage. Even worse, we have spoken, but we have not been listened to. There are many people who are ideologically opposed to Islam-to the most benign interpretation of Islam-because of their own extremist religious or political ideologies. No matter what conscientious Muslims do to live as peaceful citizens who contribute to the welfare of society, these groups will attack us and our religion. Most objectionable is what I call the, "non-Muslim Islamic fundamentalist." What I mean by this is a non-Muslim who applies a literalistic, decontextualized hermeneutic to the Qur'an and Islamic tradition. This is not how I read my scripture (maybe it is how they read theirs), so who are they to tell me that this is what Islam "really" says? Being judged as a group, rather than as individuals, also means that the negative experience of one Muslim is considered to be representative of all Muslims and all of Islam. I do not deny the right of any individual to tell his or her own story. We all have that right, and I must learn from the pain, hurt and anger of women and men who were mistreated in the name of Islam. But these negative experiences are not shared by all Muslims - indeed, not by most Muslims. This is why such authors have little or no constituencies within the Muslim community - because large numbers of Muslims do not feel they represent their interests or perspectives. The burden of collective guilt, the oppressive weight of stereotyping, and the violence of hateful anti-Muslim discourse is difficult to bear. It is even more difficult to see how this affects our youth. But there is hope. Hope lies in the goodness of ordinary Americans who try to overcome their prejudices and reach out to their Muslim neighbors. Hope lies in the solidarity shown by other groups - like Japanese Americans - who have faced similar situations. Hope lies in the extraordinary moral leadership shown by many American religious leaders to guide their congregations to the path of understanding and compassion. More than anything, I see these challenges as opportunities to examine myself and my community, to see if we are responding with enough courage and moral leadership when we witness discrimination against others. Are we able to avoid burdening other groups with collective guilt? The Qur'anic revelation, "no soul bears the sins of another" is directed first at our community. We are all human, and all of us have to struggle with our own selfishness, prejudice and will to power. As a Muslim, my struggle for my community's rights should be only the starting point of a wider struggle - a struggle for the dignity of all people. Being a Muslim in Amer

Re: Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Urgent!!
An Answer to the Question Raised by Sister Shabeen. Salaam Sister Shabeen, The Holy Qur'an makes it very clear that God has made the entire earth as a Masjid for Muslims (WA JA'ALNA LAKUMU AL_ARDA MASJIDA), and no matter where one looks one can find the "Face of Allah." (WA HAITHUMA KUNTUM FA THAMMA WAJHU ALLAH). Based on such a truly spiritual interpretation of the essence of the message of the Qur'an, including prayers, I cannot see any reason whatsoever as to why you cannot offer your prayers in a place where pictures/posters and other things exist. The word SALAT (= Prayer) is related to the word SILAH (= Connection). So when a Muslim prays he/she is making connections with God Almighty. The presence of posters, pictures, and what have you should be totally irrelevant, for the target or objective of prayers is to make a direct, personal, and spiritual connection with God (ALLAH) and nothing else. What matters is the NIYYA (Intention). My advice to you Sister Shabeen is that since God wants things to be EASY, not difficult, for us (YASSER WALA TU'ASSER), therefore go ahead and offer your prayers anywhere. Islam is essentially a common sense religion, a religion of rationality, mercy, and compassion. Unfortunately, we Muslims have managed to make Islam far more complicated and rigid than necessary, and in the process we have trivialized and/or undermined the true spirit of our beautiful faith.Take it easy on yourself! Re: Boycott Israel [IslamCity] 'Whosoever will, let him disbelieve'---from al-ahram
Salaam Sisters & Brothers, Regarding the case of the 25-year-old Egyptian Mohamed Ahmed Hegazi who applied to the court to change his religious designation from Muslim to Coptic Christian, I would like to make the following two comments: 1) Not a long time ago (probably last year), the wife of an Egyptian Coptic priest wanted to convert to Islam. Her request was not only denied, but also there was an outcry and strong protest by the Coptic Church hierarchy to deny the woman the right to change her religion. The protest campaign culminated in the decision of the head of the Coptic Church to go on a self-imposed exile into a convent in the Sinai Desert. The result was that the Egyptian authorities intervened to deny the woman her right to convert to Islam, all of which goes to show the level of double standard and/or hypocrisy involved in the current case of Mr. Hegazy. 2) In its universal sense, Islam is the "natural religion, or Dinul-Fitrah). All beings in the universe, to begin with, are Muslims, i. e., "surrendered to the Divine Will." A flower cannot help being a flower; a diamond cannot do other than sparkle. God has made them so; so it is theirs to obey. In this sense, Mr. Hegazi's foolish request is just that, foolish. How could he, and for that matter any self-respecting human being, deny the undeniable and/or reject what cannot be rejected even by birds, plants, stones, and beasts? Only money, combined with blind arrogance and/or obsession with publicity, can lead people along such an idiotic and self-destructive path. What a shame? What a pathetic character? Regards, Ibrahim Hayani " Shah Abdul Hannan wrote: Dear members, Assalamu Alaikum. Please read this write-up from Al-Ahram weekly online, Cairo. Claiming that he had embraced Christianity in secret nine years ago, married a Muslim woman with the same inclination, and is about to have a baby, 25-year-old Mohamed Ahmed Hegazi wants to become legally Christian in order that the couple's child will be registered as a Coptic Christian in identity papers. The freedom to change his religion was a human right, Hegazi said. The story became even more sensational when in speaking to the press, Hegazi's father said that his son had told him that he had been subject to "pressures" and financial inducements from Coptic preachers to convert to Christianity. Hegazi's father also claimed that his son was still a Muslim at heart. Coptic lawyer Mamdouh Nakhla also said he quit the case after he became certain that Hegazi only seeks to become a celebrity. In Port Said, Hegazi's home city, some 300 intellectuals, poets and lawyers later issued a statement entitled, "Take your hands off the Sacred Religions", urging both Muslims and Christians not to give Hegazi attention or support because "he's a long way from both Islam and Christianity." Hegazi said that he had a strong case, and that he would use views expressed by Grand Mufti Sheikh Ali Gomaa in a recent article that appeared in The Washington Post, arguing that the grand mufti's views were as good as a fatwa (religious ruling) on the subject. In the article, Gomaa said that "the matter is left until the Day of Judgement, and it is not to be dealt with in the life of this world. It is an issue of conscience, and it is between the individual and Allah." In the "On Faith" online forum of both the Washington Post and Newsweek magazine, which published Gomaa's views on Islam and apostasy on 21 July, the mufti said that, "the essential question before us is can a person who is Muslim choose a religion other than Islam? The answer is yes, they can because the Quran says, 'Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion,' [Quran, 109:6], and, 'Whosoever will, let him believe, and whosoever will, let him disbelieve,' [Quran, 18:29], and, 'There is no compulsion
Re: Boycott Israel [IslamCity] Sukayna, the barza woman
Salam Brothers & Sisters, I wish to thank you for sharing this exceedingly informative and inspiring article. What a delightful encounter with a most fascinating woman in the history of Islam. This is the kind of women the world of Islam needs today, intelligent, self-confident, highly educated, assertive, and above all courageous. This article should be a "must" reading for young Muslims, males and females alike. The future of Islam, whether in Muslim countries or anywhere else, will be all the more promising with such daring and intelligent Muslim women like Sukayna, may God Almighty bless her free spirit and enduring legacy. Please keep furnishing/enriching us with this kind of positive, highly relevant, motivational, and thoroughly inspiring stories from the infinitely rich and enchanting history of Islam. JAZAKUMU ALLAHU KHAIRAN. Ibrahim Hayani [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Assalam alaikum, Lisan al-Arab says, "A barza woman is one who does not hide her face and does not lower her head" And the dictionary adds that a barza woman is one who "is seen by people and hwo received visitors at home" - men, obviously. A barza woman is also a woman who has "sound judgment". A barz man or wman is someone "known for their aql (reasoning)". Who are they, these Muslim women who have resisted the `hijab'? The most famous was Sukayna, one of the great grand daughters of the Prophet through his daughter Fatima, the wife of Ali, the famous Ali, the ill-fated fourth orthodox caliph who abandonded power to Muawiya and was assassinated by the first Muslim political terrorist. His sons' fates were as tragic as his own, and Sukayna was present at the killing of her father at Karbala. That tragedy partly explains her revolt against political, oppressive, despotic Islam and against everything that hinders the individuals freedom - including the `hijab'. Sukayna was born in the year 49 of the Hijra (about 671 AD). She was celebrated for her beauty, for what the Arabs call beauty - an explosive mixture of physical attractiveness, critical intelligence, and caustic wit. The most powerful men debated with her; caliphs and princes proposed marriage to her, which she disdained for political reasons. Nevertheless, she ended up marrying five, some say six, husbands. She quarreled with some of them, made passionate declarations of love to others, brought one to court for infidelity, and never pledged Ta'a (obedience, the key principle of Muslim marriage) to any of them. In her marriage contracs she stipulated that she would not obey her husband, but would do as she pleased, and that she did not acknowledge that her husband had the right to practice polygamy. All this was the result of her interest in political affairs and poetry. She continued to receive visits from poets and, despite her several marriages, to attend attend the meetings of the Quraishi tribal council, the equivalent of the democratic municipal councils. [Isbahani, Aghani, vol 16 p 168-9] Her personality has fascinated the historians, who have devoted pages and pages, sometimes who biographies to her. Her character was deeply affected by history's harsh reality - particularly the killing of her father, Husayn ibn Ali, at Karbala, one of the most outrageous massacres in Muslim political history. Husayn was a man of peace who had declared to Muawiya in a written contract his decision to renounce the caliphate, provided he be allowed to live in safety with his family. A poet, he celebrated the women he adored: Rabab, his wife, and Sukayna, his daughter. After the death of Muawiya, when he refused to swear allegiance to Muawiya's son, Husayn was killed at Karbala in the midst of his family, including Sukayna. It happened on the day of Ashura (the Day of Atonement), Oct 10th 680 AD. All her life Sukayna harbored feelings of contempt, which she never hesitated to express, for the Umayyad dynasty and its bloody methods. She attacked the dynasty in the mosques and insulted its governors and representatives every time she had the opportunity, even arranging occasions for this purpose. [Isbahani, Aghani, vol 16 p 143] She made one of hre husbands sign a marriage contract that officially specified her right to nushuz, that rebellion against marital control that so tormented the fuqaha. She claimed the right to be nashiz, and paraded it, like her beauty and her talent, to assert the importance and vitality of women in the Arab tradition. Admiring and respectful, the historians delight in evoking her family dramas - for instance, the case that she brought against one of her husbands who had violated the rule of monogamy that she had imposed on him in the marriage contract. Dumbfounded by the conditions in the contract, the judge nevertheless was obliged to hear the case, with his own wife attending this trial of the century, and the caliph sending an emissary to keep
Re: Boycott Israel [IslamCity] U.S. Evangelist, a Critic of Islam, Reaches Out to Sudan's President
Dear Brothers & Sisters: What a shame that the President of Sudan would accept to meet , and honour, the very person who insulted, demonized, and dishonoured Islam. How do people like the President of Sudan expect to be respected when, through their own actions, have shown no respect for themselves and/or for their faith and people. The war in Darfur is a crime being committed by the despotic regime in Sudan against its own people. How could a ruler who claims to be a Muslim allow such crimes to be committed against his fellow Muslims? Any Muslims who thinks that military dictatorship, be it in Sudan, Libya, Egypt, or Pakistan, will solve the problems facing these countries is a person who is engaged in self-deception. Dictatorship is an essential part of the problem; it cannot be the solution. Sudan , the largest country in Africa and, potentially, one of the richest countries in the world (certainly in the African continent) is a living testament to this "truism." The dictatorial and despotic regime in Sudan has "succeeded" in the perpetuation of poverty and division in that rich and noble country. What a disgrace! Graham, who has called Islam an "evil and wicked" religion, told Bashir in the 2003 meeting that he wanted to persuade him to become a Christian. Bashir, at the time fighting a civil war in the southern region of the country, told Graham that he wanted to make him a Muslim, Graham recalled. In a meeting between the two men here Monday night, the semi-serious proselytizing continued. This time, though, Graham said he came away thinking that Bashir, who now stands accused of presiding over the killing of at least 200,000 people in the Darfur region in the country's west, deserves credit for signing the peace agreement with rebels in the south in 2005. Although human rights activists and some U.S. officials are counseling tougher measures against Bashir's government to end the violence in Darfur -- and to more fully implement a faltering peace agreement with the south -- Graham said that a softer approach is needed. "I'm not a politician, but I think our government does need to recognize some steps he's taken and reward this government in some way to show them we appreciate what they have done" regarding southern Sudan, said Graham, the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham and head of the international Christian relief group Samaritan's Purse. "I think we can do more when we're engaged." Evangelical groups have for years rallied around the cause of southern Sudan, where a 20-year civil war was waged largely over oil fields along a disputed border between north and south. The conflict also had religious and ethnic dimensions; the government is made up mostly of Arabs and Muslims, while southerners are black Africans, around 30 percent of whom practice Christianity, with most of the rest practicing indigenous religions. Graham, who has been criticized by other U.S. evangelical leaders for his comments about Islam, was in the region touring his group's projects in Kenya, Uganda and Sudan. He was accompanied by former Senate majority leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.). Earlier in the day, the group flew two hours southwest for a brief visit to Otash, a sprawling camp for some of the 2.5 million people displaced by the fighting in Darfur, the scene of what the United States has described as genocide. At the airport in the town of Nyala, about 550 miles from Khartoum, three government attack helicopters and three Soviet-made fighter jets were parked on the tarmac. Aid workers said that 5,000 people had made their way to the camp, just outside Nyala, in the last week alone. Although some people on Tuesday were receiving their initial allotment of bamboo sticks and tarps for shelter, others have been at the camp for more than two years, and by now many have built mud-brick homes and even surrounded them with straw fencing. One elderly man had tears in his eyes as he told Graham that he had been at the camp for nine months. "This land in Darfur is our right," he said. "If it belongs to the Arabs, then let us die, all." The teacher had earlier been suspended after she refused to shake hands with men last summer. The woman citied religious beliefs for her decision, despite the fact she had previously shaken hands with men. The director of the vocational VMBO school said the Islamic teacher gave a bad example to students. The Equal Treatment Commission recently issued an advisory ruling granting the teacher the right to refuse a hand shake. It said the Utrecht school should not sack her for this reason alone. Comment: If refusing to shake hands with the opposite sex means that Muslims give a bad example to students then does that mean that we have to participate in Christmas celebrations, go to parties and free-mix, dance and drink alcohol? Europe is supposed to be a place where people come fleeing persecution because of its history of tollerance and a place where u can practice your religion and express alternative ideas and opinions without fear. But in recent years Europe is on its way to becoming a place where only the Secular viewpoint is tollerated and any view based upon religion and especially Islam is clamped down upon. So we see that the western civilisation is in conflict, not with Islam but with its own philosophy, what is Secularism and what is the implementation of it? Should this woman be sacked or should she not be sacked? This is the dilemma the Secularists are facing as can be seen from the article. It is unfortunate, indeed tragic, that by engaging in such trivial and childish activities, some Muslims (like this sister) have managed to trivialize Islam itself. You cannot serve Islam by engaging in "bad manner," and refusing to shake hands is a form of bad manner. I fail to understand what this sister as well as other Muslims who behave like her are trying to prove? Surely there are much, much better ways of projecting modesty and/or virtuosity. In this respect, I would strongly recommend Karen Armstrong's latest book entitled MUHAMMAD: A PROPHET FOR OUR TIME. Ullema [ scholars ] should not remain silent in face of divisive actions, nor the intellectuals should shirk their responsibility to impart spirit of hope in our youth; and politicians and leaders should not distance themselves from the people and must rely on them. And the Islamic governments should strengthen their ranks and solidarity and use the power of the people to overcome the threats of the domineering powers. Today the intelligence services of the U.S and Britain in Iraq, Lebanon and in countries of North Africa and wherever they can, are spreading the virus of religious division and discord. The congregation of Hajj keeps us immune from this deadly virus, and places this sacred Qur'anic verse in full view:" And obey Allah, and His Messenger, and do not quarrel, for then you will be weak in hearts and your power will depart, and be patient; surely Allah is with the patient. For at a time when the Muslims, irrespective of their national and ethnic background, are faced with the brutal onslaught of military occupation, despotic political regimes, oppression, and demonization, the Muslims need, more than ever, a clear vision, combined with the total rejection of all insidious efforts to keep them disunited and, thus, waste their energy and resources in useless, albeit destructive, "sectarian" and/or tribal conflicts that will, ultimately, benefit the enemies of Islam and Muslims. Re: [IslamCity] How to Make your Wife Happy : an Islamic perspective
count her for mistakes done in Allah's rights, e.g. delaying prayers, etc. Remember all the good she does whenever she makes a mistake Remember that all humans err so try to find excuses for her such as maybe she is tired, sad, having her monthly cycle or that her commitment to Islam is growing Avoid attacking her for the bad cooking of the food as the Prophet PBUH never blamed any of his wiv es for this. If he likes the food, he eats and if he doesn't then he does not eat and does not comment Before declaring her to be in error, try other indirect approaches that are more subtle than direct accusations Escape from using insults and words that may hurt her feelings When it becomes necessary to discuss a problem wait until you have privacy from others Waiting until the anger has subsided a bit can help to keep a control on your words. Remember this is not a perfect translation so forgive us our faults and correct our errors. Islahonline Dear Brothers & Sisters: SALAM I would like to suggest the removal/deletion of this rather naive and somewhat offensive article from your web site. Naive because it puts the blame for any problem within the context of marriage on the wife. It reflects a rather silly, condescending, and chauvinistic attitude that is contrary to the true spirit of Islam (The religion of TAWHEED, that is, the religion of equality, justice, and inclusivity). And offensive because section 17 (#3 ... "The last solution is light hitting," when allowed), is not only contrary to Canadian law which stipulates Zero tolerance of physical violence, it is also contrary to the entire traditions of the Prophet, as well as the compassionate and merciful spirit of Islam. How could any self-respecting Muslim, let alone an intelligent human being, justify violence (and "hitting is violence, indeed, barbaric) against one's wife in the name of Islam? A few years ago, a Spanish Imam was sent to jail because he published a book in which he advocated similar actions by Muslim men. The story of that Spanish Imam caught widespread attention and publicity and played in the hands of the enemies of Islam who used in order to justify their claim that Islam is a sexist and anti-women religion. It is unfortunate, indeed tragic, that many so-called Muslim scholars have used their mistaken interpretation of certain Qura'anic terms (e.g., DARABA, or IDRIBUHENNAH) in order to justify such barbaric behavior on the part of Muslim men. The Arabic word DARABA, has about 70 (yes seventy) meanings, among which "to walk away, as DARABA FIL ARD," and "to give an example as in DARABA MATHALAN," and so forth. Neither the traditions of the Holy Prophet nor the true spirit of Islam as reflected in the Holy Qur'an could possibly be used to support such a barbaric behavior. It is about time that Muslims begin to "rediscover" the true spirit of their faith; a spirit of compassion, mercy, justice, and infinite humanity. Yahoo! Shopping Find Great Deals on Holiday Gifts at Yahoo! Shopping Dear Brothers & Sisters: I found the whole argument as to whether or not women should be segregated from men in the mosque, to be counterproductive and downright silly. If Islam is the religion of Unity (TAWHEED) and Justice (IDL), then the whole argument about "permissibility" is totally irrelevant. One should not waste one's time and using some questionable AHADEETH to prove the validity (or lack of) of such an obviously repugnant and demeaning practice. Muslim women should have the right to claim their rightful place in the most important institution in the life of the Muslim community, namely the mosque. So please stop using these totally irrelevant AHADEETH which are insulting to the nobility and sanctity of the Holy Qur'an and the Prophet. In this respect, I strongly recommend Jeffrey Lang's splendid book EVEN ANGELS ASK: A Journey to Islam in America (amana publications, 1998. ISBN # 0-915957-1). In it professor Lang of Kansas University (he is a professor of mathematics there) points out that: "In the past fourteen years, I have witnessed many persons who were genuinely interested in Islam and in search of faith turn away from this religion because of disillusionment over Muslim attitudes about women. I have observed this so often that I am inclined to say that this may indeed be the biggest barrier to the spread of Islam in the West (emphasis added)." You may also wish to read professor Lang's latest book entitled LOSING MY RELIGION: A CALL FOR HELP. Most of this book is focused on the disenchantment of Muslim youth in North America with Islam, the most important reason of which is the rigid and archaic interpretation of the sublime Qur'an and the traditions of the Prophet. So please brothers and sisters, give yourselves the chance to "smell the roses," and stop arguing about this nonsensical and racist issue of "women segregation" in the mosque; there are far more important issues that require the collective work of all Muslims, be they men or women. The future of Islam in Canada and the United States (and for that matter, in the world at large and especially in the Muslim world) will depend to a large extent on the active participation of Muslim women in the collective life of the Muslim communities. An essential requirement of this active participation is the full integration of Muslim women in the mosque. As Hagee's book clearly indicates, Christian Zionism, rooted in tradition of the Crusades and a long history of Church triumphalism, is a recipe for global war and Christian imperialism. Moreover, it reflects a total lack of genuine spirituality, seeking to reduce the notion of God into a petty, whimsical and racist dictator who willingly urges the slaughter of innocents in order to protect the expansionist designs of his supposedly 'Chosen People'. Of course, Christian Zionism is hardly unique in its use of religion for such blatantly political ends, but given the immense clout enjoyed by its advocates today, especially in America, it is a much more menacing threat to world peace than is sometimes imagined and cannot be simply dismissed as the ravings of lunatics on the fringe. ted assertions that its slogan meant that Islamic civilisation is the reference of a "non-discriminatory" agenda, which gives precedence to citizenship. Copts insist the use of the word "Islam" makes them feel excluded and, as Hanna argued, "would immediately mean giving precedence to religion over citizenship. "Egypt should be a secular country where all citizens are treated equally regardless of their religious affiliations," Hanna insisted. Sameh Fawzi, managing editor of the weekly Watani newspaper, argued, "Citizenship as a term was largely absent in the Brotherhood's official statements, which instead referred to Copts as Ahl Zimma (non-Muslims enjoying the protection of Muslims). "This Islamisation of the state would reduce both Copts and Muslims to single blocs succumbing to a unified Islamic project and such radical edicts like those published in the group's official magazine in 1980 which nearly banned Copts from establishing churches and joining the army," Fawzi said. Although the edicts were reportedly issued more than two decades ago, Fawzi remains worried that the same person who issued them, Abdullah El-Khatib, "still holds a prominent position in the group". Abul-Futuh, however, countered that the group had "made it clear in an official statement issued in 1994 that citizens are the source of power and are equal in all rights and duties regardless of religion and gender. "No law, no matter how divine, can be enforced without the public's consent," Abul-Futuh told the Weekly. "We respect the Christian creed and would never impose any law that would prohibit Copts from practicing their religious rituals." He mentioned the fact that three Copts had been working in the political office of the group's founder Hassan El-Banna as further proof that the Brotherhood was never anti-Coptic. That said, however, Habib insisted the Brotherhood "now has a bigger responsibility to make its well-intended principles known to the public and declare a clearer, more specific agenda using terms which do not confuse. "Copts, for their part, should engage in a dialogue with the Brotherhood to get a clearer picture of their beliefs and agenda away from antagonist media propaganda," Habib said. Dear Brother Shah: Thank you for sharing this timely and highly relevant article. I do hope, and pray, that , like Turkey, Egypt will become (as it should) another shining example of Islamic enlightenment, democracy, openness, and inclusivity. It was unfortunate, indeed tragic, that the silly (indeed, criminal) military establishment in Algeria denied the Algerian people from expressing their will and desire to establish a democratic government inspired by the sublime principles of the Holy Qur'an. It would have been an exciting "experiment" in Islamic modernity and civility. With best wishes to the valiant people of Egypt who refused to be intimidated by the forces of despotism and tyranny. He did not mention FREEDOM because with justice, freedom can be guaranteed but not the other way around. Sister Nadia, thank you for exposing the hypocrisy and injustice that are the daily diet of many, many peoples, especially if they happen to be Arabs and/or Muslims. What is equally painful and frustrating is the fact that most, if not all, Arab and/or Muslim governments don't seem to take these issues seriously, and the main reason for that is: these governments themselves have no self-respect and, therefore, have no respect for their own peoples. It is almost a truism: You don't expect respect from governments that have lost their own self-respect. What an ugly vicious circle! olence, and ascended back to the heavenly mansion after his crucifixion. He led a life of strict celibacy, which, he taught, was essential to true holiness. He inculcated great tenderness toward all living beings. He could walk upon the water or upon the air; he could foretell future events with great accuracy. He practised the most devout contemplation, severe discipline of the body and mind, and completely subdued his passions. He was worshiped as a god who had existed as a spirit from all eternity, and his followers were called Heavenly Teachers. Alcestos of Euripides 600 BC. A less usual crucified God was Alcestos, who was female, the only example of a feminine God atoning for the sins of the world upon the cross. The doctrine of the trinity and atoning offering for sin was inculcated as a part of her religion. Attis of Phrygia 1170 BC. Speaking of this crucified Messiah, the Anacalypsis informs us that several histories are given of him, but all concur in representing him as having been an atoning offering for sin. And the Latin phrase suspensus lingo, found in his history, indicates the manner of his death. He was suspended on a tree, crucified, buried and rose again. Crite of Chaldaea 1200 BC. The Chaldeans have noted in their sacred books the crucifixion of a god with the above name. He was also known as the Redeemer, and was styled the Ever Blessed Son of God, the saviour of the Race, the Atoning Offering for an Angry God. When he was offered up, both heaven and earth were shaken to their foundations. Bali of Orissa 725 BC. In Orissa, in Asia, they have the story of a crucified God, known by several names, including the above, all of which, we are told, signify Lord Second, his being the second person or second member of the trinity. Most of the crucified gods occupied that position in a trinity of gods, the Son, in all cases, being the atoning offering. This God Bali was also called Baliu, and sometimes Bel. Monuments of this crucified God, bearing great age, may be found amid the ruins of the magnificent city of Mahabalipore, partially buried amongst the figures of the temple. Mithras of Persia 600 BC. This Persian God was slain upon the cross to make atonement for mankind, and to take away the sins of the world. He was born on the twenty-fifth day of December, and crucified on a tree. Christian writers both speak of his being slain, and yet both omit to speak of the manner in which he was put to death. And the same policy has been pursued with respect to other crucified gods of the pagans, as we have shown. Devatat of Siam, Ixion of Rome, Apollonius of Tyana in Cappadocia, are all reported to have died on the cross." Ixion, 400 BC, was crucified on a wheel, the rim representing the world, and the spokes constituting the cross. He bore the burden of the world, the sins of the world, on his back while suspended on the cross. He was therefore called the crucified spirit of the world. It is curious that Christian writers will recount a long list of miracles and remarkable incidents in the life of Apollonius of Tyana, the Cappadocian saviour, forming a parallel to those of the Christian saviour, yet say not a word about his crucifixion. Christian writers find it necessary to omit the crucifixion of these saviours fearing the telling would lessen the spiritual force of the crucifixion of Christ, which has to be unique. They thus exalted the tradition of the crucifixion into the most important dogma of the Christian faith. Hence, their efforts to conceal from the public the fact that it is of pagan origin. Mackey's Lexicon of Freemasonry says that Freemasons secretly taught the doctrine of the crucifixion, atonement and resurrection preceded the Christian era, and that similar doctrines were taught in all the ancient mysteries. Salaam (Peace be upon you), Andrea (Saleema) "To God belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth. Whether you show what is in your own selves or conceal it, God will call you to account for it. Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills, for God is Able to do all things." Re: Donate to Islamic Relief [IslamCity] Why are some things forbidden in this world when they are permitted in Paradise?
rue spirit of Islam, and is offensive to human intelligence and dignity (especially for women, be they Muslims or otherwise). This kind of literal interpretation of the Qur'an reduces Paradise to the level of a "Red District" populated by promiscuous males and females. Nothing can be more carnal and disrespectful. In order to gain a better understanding of the issue, namely, the allegorical and metaphorical aspects of the Holy Book, I would suggest the following references: 1) STRUGGLING TO SURRENDER: Some Impressions of an American Convert to Islam. By: Jeffrey Lang. (Amana Publications, 1994. ISBN 0-915957-19-1. Specifically Chapter 2 (The Qur'an), and especially pages 46-48 where you will find an excellent discussion of this very issue. 2) The Message of The Qur'an: Translated and Explained. By: Muhammad Asad. I refer specifically to Appendix 1 entitled "Symbolism and Allegory in the Qur'an." Asad's interpretation of the Holy Qur'an is one of the best, if not the best, available in the English language. It is about time that Muslims begin to read the Holy Book in a manner which is compatible with dignity, depth, and infinite beauty of the Text. Groups Links > > > > > > > Hi Brothers & Sisters: SALAM This is a disgraceful and repugnant piece of nonsensical history! Why are we wasting our time, resources, and energy trying to fight "old" battles? Don't we have enough today? Any attempt to create division and hostility among members of the UMMAH, regardless of their intellectual, ethnic, political, or sectarian orientation cannot possibly serve the true interest of our maligned and deeply troubled UMMAH. What is wrong with those people who have taken it upon themselves to saw the seeds of division and mistrust among members of the Islamic communities. As a Muslim (and for your information, a SUNNI too) of Syrian/Arab origin , I can attest to the fact that Yazid was one of the worst rulers in the history of Islam; he used to pride himself of swimming in a pool filled with wine. Not only that, his entire ascendancy to power (or Khilafa) was illegal, because there is no such a thing as "hereditary monarchy" in Islam. Like his father (Mu'awiyah, who was a brilliant politician no doubt, but a poor Muslim nonetheless), Yazid was a usurper of authority because he was "appointed" by his father and was NOT elected, as was the case during the reign of AL KHULAFA" AL RASHIDOUN. Because we are wasting our time fighting "old" and useless battles, we tend to neglect or present problems. A case in point, a few days ago it was announced that Kuwait has donated some $500 million for the relief efforts in the U.S (the most powerful and richest country in the world). Is this the kind of "generosity" the Muslims need these days? Furthermore, on September 5th (just 7 days ago), the Toronto Star carried an article entitled "School a first for refugee,9). The article starts by referring to a girl by the name of Mursall. She was born in Pakistan to Afghani parents who were refugees living in Pakistan. Mursall was NOT able to go to a public school in Pakistan because she was the daughter of Afghani refugees (her parents were too poor to send her to a private school). Is this the kind of treatment Muslims should receive in a Muslim country, especially in Pakistan whose reason for existence is Islam (a religion that demands from its adherents to acquire knowledge from the cradle to the grave... even in China)? These are the kind of of issues and disgraceful and repugnant behaviors we should be paying attention to, not whether Yazid was wrong or right. Who the hell cares anyway. Asad's brilliant translation and interpretation of the Qur'an managed to successfully combine modern scholarship with authentic Islamic traditions. It is somewhat ironic that Asad's translation is not widely known and/or readily available in bookstores and public libraries. Asad is also the author of THE ROAD TO MECCA, one of the most enchanting books I've ever read. He was a Muslim thinker par excellence. Regards, Ibrahim Hayani Yahoo!
