[jira] [Comment Edited] (NUMBERS-175) Add continued fraction implementations using a generator of terms
[ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NUMBERS-175?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel=17445445#comment-17445445 ] Alex Herbert edited comment on NUMBERS-175 at 11/22/21, 2:36 PM: - I have started on an implementation using the generator approach. Work in progress here [PR 109|https://github.com/apache/commons-numbers/pull/109]. I found some issues with the current implementation. h3. It cannot compute values approaching zero with a small first term Consider the evaluation of tan(z): {noformat} z tan(z) = --- 1 - z^2 --- 3 - z^2 --- 5 - ... {noformat} Here the leading term is zero. The current implementation must set this to a non-zero small number as an estimate of the first convergent h0. The remaining convergents h1, h2, h3, etc are computed using an update to the first. If the expected value is far from the initial non-zero number then this works. Otherwise the result is incorrect: {code:java} @Test void test() { // Evaluate tan(x) ContinuedFraction cf = new ContinuedFraction() { @Override protected double getA(int n, double x) { return n == 1 ? x : -x * x; } @Override protected double getB(int n, double x) { return n == 0 ? 0 : 2 * n - 1; } }; for (double x : new double[] {0.1, 1e-2, 1e-4, 1e-6, 1e-50, 1e-100, 1e-200}) { try { System.out.printf("%25s %25s%n", Math.tan(x), cf.evaluate(x, 1e-10)); } catch (ArithmeticException ex) { // failed } } } {code} Outputs: {noformat} 0.100334672085450550.10033467208545055 0.0146667207 0.0146667207 1.3334E-4 1.3334E-4 1.E-6 1.E-6 1.0E-502.0E-50 1.0E-1001.0E-50 1.0E-2001.0E-50 {noformat} This is not a major issue as you can evaluate the fraction advanced by 1 iteration and then divide the original first numerator coefficient a1 by the evaluated fraction: {code:java} @Test void test() { // Evaluate tan(x) ContinuedFraction cf = new ContinuedFraction() { @Override protected double getA(int n, double x) { return -x * x; } @Override protected double getB(int n, double x) { return 2 * n + 1; } }; for (double x : new double[] {0.1, 1e-2, 1e-4, 1e-6, 1e-50, 1e-100, 1e-200}) { try { System.out.printf("%25s %25s%n", Math.tan(x), x / cf.evaluate(x, 1e-10)); } catch (ArithmeticException ex) { // failed } } } {code} This is correct: {noformat} 0.100334672085450550.10033467208545054 0.0146667207 0.0146667205 1.3334E-4 1.3334E-4 1.E-6 1.E-6 1.0E-501.0E-50 1.0E-100 1.0E-100 1.0E-200 1.0E-200 {noformat} h3. It does not detect an update multiplier that is zero Consider this very bad fraction using max value for the numerator after a few terms: {noformat} 1 0.5 + - 0.5 + max --- 0.5 +max - 0.5 + ... {noformat} This will infinite loop: {code:java} @Test void test() { // This will create an update deltaN of zero. // The algorithm gets stuck in a continuous loop. ContinuedFraction cf = new ContinuedFraction() { @Override protected double getA(int n, double x) { return n < 2 ? 1 : Double.MAX_VALUE; } @Override protected double getB(int n, double x) { return 0.5; } }; final double x = 1; // Ignored Assertions.assertTimeoutPreemptively(Duration.ofSeconds(5), () -> cf.evaluate(x, 1e-10)); } {code} The infinite loop is not detected due to the use of: {code:java} while (n <= maxIterations) { {code} With maxIterations set to Integer.MAX_VALUE this will loop forever. This condition is mentioned in NUMBERS-46 but it was not fixed so that the algorithm can enter at least 1 iteration. This is a bug. I've fixed it in the PR above for the new generalized continued fraction. An appropriate fix should be implemented in the ContinuedFraction class. was (Author: alexherbert): I have started on an implementation using the generator approach. Work in progress here [PR
[jira] [Commented] (STATISTICS-48) Remove isSupportConnected from the distribution interfaces
[ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/STATISTICS-48?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel=17447397#comment-17447397 ] Alex Herbert commented on STATISTICS-48: Removed isSupportConnected from the distributions interfaces in commit: d7c53ab3e05b09f2522f7b7ee78e96ad97defe95 The method is only used in the AbstractContinuousDistribution for the default implementation of the inverse cumulative or survival probability. When it returns false then the inverse method will perform an additional step to ensure that the lower-bound of the interval on which the cdf is constant should be returned. This will search from the initial solution point x downwards if a smaller value also has the same cumulative (survival) probability. All distributions (Discrete and Continuous) returned true for this method. This functionality is thus currently not used by any distributions in the library. To simplify the public interfaces this method has been removed. It has been moved to a protected method in the AbstractContinuousDistribution as it is an implementation detail for the default inverse cdf and sf. The functionality is tested and works for the cdf and sf. Any custom distributions with a gap in the support can extend the base class and enable the functionality by overridding the isSupportConnected method. Note: The method is not used by any DiscreteDistribution. The default inverse cdf in the AbstractDiscreteDistribution will return the lowest value x for the input probability as part of the bisection search. > Remove isSupportConnected from the distribution interfaces > -- > > Key: STATISTICS-48 > URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/STATISTICS-48 > Project: Apache Commons Statistics > Issue Type: Improvement > Components: distribution >Affects Versions: 1.0 >Reporter: Alex Herbert >Priority: Trivial > Fix For: 1.0 > > > Both the discrete and continuous distribution have a property in the > interface: > {code:java} > /** > * Indicates whether the support is connected, i.e. whether > * all values between the lower and upper bound of the support > * are included in the support. > * > * @return whether the support is connected. > */ > boolean isSupportConnected(); > {code} > This is only ever true for all distributions. > The functions dates back as far as Commons Math 2 with no apparent use. > There is no facility to determine what values within the support are not > valid. [jira] [Comment Edited] (STATISTICS-47) Add an inverse for the SurvivalProbability
[ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/STATISTICS-47?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel=17447265#comment-17447265 ] Alex Herbert edited comment on STATISTICS-47 at 11/22/21, 9:28 AM: --- I have added support for the inverse SF to the master branch. Some bugs in the inverse CDF were found for the discrete distributions that use an explicit inversion of the forward CDF function. This was the Geometric and Uniform distributions. They had appropriate rounding at the upper bound for cdf( x ) but not the lower bound for cdf( x ). Tests have been added for the discrete distributions to ensure the inversion is correct at the boundary change. The following conditions are now tested using single ULP changes in the probability value passed to the inverse function where appropriate: {noformat} icdf( cdf(x) ) = x icdf( p > cdf(x) )>= x+1 icdf( cdf(x-1) < p < cdf(x) ) = x isf( sf(x) ) = x isf( p < sf(x) ) >= x+1 isf( sf(x-1) > p > sf(x) ) = x {noformat} The distributions are now limited by the precision of the function that is being inverted. Thus it is possible that the following are not true: {noformat} icdf( 1 - sf(x) ) = x isf( 1 - cdf(x) ) = x {noformat} An example of such behaviour is demonstrated by the discrete uniform distribution: {code:java} UniformDiscreteDistribution dist = UniformDiscreteDistribution.of(0, 10); double p = dist.cumulativeProbability(8); double q = dist.survivalProbability(8); int xp = dist.inverseCumulativeProbability(p); int xq = dist.inverseSurvivalProbability(q); int xx = dist.inverseSurvivalProbability(1 - p); System.out.printf("%s + %s = %s (q ~ %s)%n", p, q, p + q, 1 - p); System.out.printf("icdf( cdf(%d) )= %d%n", x, xp); System.out.printf("isf( sf(%d) ) = %d%n", x, xq); System.out.printf("isf( 1 - cdf(%d) ) = %d%n", x, xx); BigDecimal bp = BigDecimal.valueOf(9).divide(BigDecimal.valueOf(11), MathContext.DECIMAL128); BigDecimal bq = BigDecimal.valueOf(2).divide(BigDecimal.valueOf(11), MathContext.DECIMAL128); System.out.printf("p error %s : q error = %s%n", bp.subtract(new BigDecimal(p)).doubleValue(), bq.subtract(new BigDecimal(q)).doubleValue()); {code} {noformat} 0.8181818181818182 + 0.18181818181818182 = 1.0 (q ~ 0.18181818181818177) icdf( cdf(8) )= 8 isf( sf(8) ) = 8 isf( 1 - cdf(8) ) = 9 p error -5.0464682937507114E-17 : q error = -5.046468293750712E-18 {noformat} Inversion of the complement of the CDF does not return the same value. This is because the survival function has a greater accuracy than the CDF and inverts the complement of the CDF as being x+1, if the 1 - cdf( x ) is interpreted as a survival probability. This behaviour may be confusing but is a result of the lack of precision of the probability value as it approaches 1. It is always better to use the CDF and inverse CDF if interested in cumulative probabilities and the SF and inverse SF if interested in survival probabilities. was (Author: alexherbert): I have added support for the inverse SF to the master branch.
