CB-9762 Add launch storyboard support

* No default splash images are provided as they would be overwritten anyway upon
adding the platform.

* Storyboard will open in Xcode 6, but is NOT supported on Xcode 6. Xcode 7
is the minimum required version for this feature.

* Compatibility: Node 0.x versions don't understand Array.find(); used .reduce()
instead with appropriate comments in the code.

So, in playing around with my PR, I've discovered the following:

- Travis CI fails because it is using Xcode 6.1; they pass if I specify Xcode 
7.3 explicitly.
- Xcode 6.1 does not like the additions I made to the asset library and it 
complains loudly about about the storyboard (even when not set as the launch 
storyboard)
- Cordova documentation 
(http://cordova.apache.org/docs/en/latest/guide/platforms/ios/index.html#requirements-and-support)
 indicates that the minimum required version of Xcode is 6.0
- Xcode 6.0 will run on macOS 10.9 and higher.

This leads me to believe that this would be considered a breaking change, since 
the minimum version of Xcode would now be 7.0. Xcode 7.0 requires a minimum of 
macOS 10.10.4. 

Given all of that, I'm thinking this can't be rolled out until we have a major 
cordova-ios release. Thoughts?

CB-9762 (iOS) Add launch storyboard support

Note: The splashscreen plugin will require updating to use the new images; 
but I think that should be a separate (but related) issue. I don't think it 
will be difficult to add though (crossing my fingers)!

Note: Documentation will need to be updated to reflect the changes in this 
PR

Note: No default splash images are provided; they would be overwritten 
anyway upon
adding the platform. I've added the images I used below:

That makes sense.

I assume when launch storyboard is used, there is no need to ask developers to 
provide copies of the same image with different resolution (1x, 2x, 3x), as 
only the highest resolution of the same image is needed. The launch storyboard 
can scale the image properly based on device's resolutions when starting the 
app.

Jonathan -- thanks for your suggestion. Using a single image was in fact my 
original intent, but I've found since that it tends to be a little limiting 
(especially with regard to viewports that are very narrow). With the addition 
of ipad/iphone idiom support, the dev has a lot more control over what the 
launch image looks like. Going from universal idioms to adding ipad/iphone only 
needed an additional loop, but converting a plugin PoC to the core platform did 
require some reworking of the logic. 

See my other comment regarding a test branch; see what you think. I'd 
appreciate your input!

I've got a branch that supports the launch storyboard here:

It follows nearly the same logic as set forth in my second PoC, but also 
supports the iPad and iPhone idioms as [~jonathanli] suggested. The logic 
wasn't any more difficult; just an additional loop.

A few additional notes:

* If there are no matching splash images, the project is configured so that no 
launch storyboard is used. This allows for fallback to the existing launch 
images. (Note: if the user has already configured their own storyboard, this 
won't reset it.)
* If there are matching splash images, the project is configured to use our 
launch storyboard unless a storyboard is already configured.
* No default images are provided; they would get overwritten on the first 
prepare (regardless of any splashes in config.xml)

When using the launchscreen storyboard, the big challenge is handling ipad in 
compact-regular mode, the same image will need to work in 

ipad pro slideview in portrait mode with a width/height ratio of 4 
=2732/(2048/3),  
ipad slideview in landscape mode with the width/height ratio of 2.25 = 
1535/(2048/3), 
ipad split view in landscape mode with width/height ratio of 1.5 = 
1536/(2048/2). 

So It seems unlikely the existing splash screen image can display properly in 
all the above cases. in the end we just create a single new launch image with 
the resolution of 2948 x 2732, and set it to any-any mode for all screen images 
(both ipad and iphone) with UIImageView's "Aspect Fill" settings. 

Maybe it is better to just create a single high resolution launch image, and 
use it for all launch screens for simplifying the configuration and related 
logic

Adding support for iPad/iPhone-specific images shouldn't be too hard, but I'm 
worried about potentially colliding with existing splashes, although it's 
probably unlikely that anyone would follow the same exact naming pattern -- 
they'd have to name it like Default@2x~ipad~anyany.png". I could add additional 
logic to ignore tags with existing width/height attributes, which would nearly 
completely eliminate the possibility, I think. (I'm trying to avoid this being 
a breaking change to cordova-ios)

I don't think I'd build any logic to check for width/height combinations that 
make sense. Apple could always come along and use a combination that doesn't 
currently make sense in the future, and then the logic would need to change.

I would expect that the existing splash screen plugin would need to be updated. 
I think it should be pretty easy - just show the launch storyboard (the assets 
should be handled automatically). But that's a guess on my part, and I wonder 
if it should deserve a separate issue (linked with this one, though)?

Hi, 
As the developers may select different image resource for iphone and ipad 
devices, so instead of using "universal" resource type, they may specify  
"ipad" or "iphone" as the resource type. such as ""2x~ipad~com.png". Note for 
ipad, there could only be "regular~regular" and "compact~regular" used for app 
launch image. So there is no need to have "regular~compact" resource for launch 
image.

In addition, I assume there will not be a separate launchscreen plugin only for 
handling this logic for ipad pro device, and the new logic will be added into 
the existing splashscreen plugin. Is that correct?

So I've been finally able to get back to this and I've got a new version of the 
plugin PoC at 
https://github.com/kerrishotts/cordova-plugin-ios-launch-screen/tree/2.0.0

The plugin now uses an image set referenced by the launch storyboard. This 
allows the developer to specify any combination of density and size classes 
they need. The plugin accepts @1x, @2x, @3x, and "compact" and "any" (matching 
"regular" size) width and height combinations, which means there is a possible 
12 images that can be supplied. I went through some calculations and, assuming 
I did the math right, in practice only five should actually need to be 
specified (currently), but one can also get by with only specifying one image 
as well (in which case, v2 works much like v1).

Here's how a sample config.xml would look:









The key is "@[density]~universal~[width][height]"; what comes before and after 
doesn't matter to (but will be preserved by) the plugin. "any" technically 
matches all regular sizes since "compact" is the other option. (I could have 
gone with "any" and "regular", but this made more sense). I suppose, 
technically, the plugin could use "reg" in place of "any", but I wanted to be 
consistent with how Xcode renders the image set.

Side note: the assistant editor's preview is absolutely rotten for verifying 
which device and viewport gets which image. For whatever reason, it insists on 
showing only one image picked from the image set. For example, if the image set 
contained a @1x/any/any image, my MBP only ever displays /that/ image, 
regardless of if the device selected in preview would actually pick another 
image. What's even more odd is by MBP is a retina device, so I would actually 
have expected it to pick the @2x/any/any version, and yet it doesn't. So the 
only way to actually verify things is to use the sim or a real device.

I think we need to add an Asset Catalog (with Universal images) to support the 
different size classes (See 
http://oleb.net/blog/2014/08/replacing-launch-images-with-storyboards/)

Use the Assistant Editor to preview the ImageView under different phone sizes.

Since we would use an Asset Catalog, all we really need to do to support the 
iPad Pro, and future devices is:

1. Incorporate the Launch Storyboard, and make the project use it
2. Update the appropriate images in the Asset Catalog (through the 
 tag in config.xml, TBD)

The Asset Catalog in #2 is different from the existing Launch Images and App 
Icon asset catalog we are using.

So (since I brought it up on the last hangout!), I created a PoC plugin that 
generates a launch storyboard for iPad Pro support. I've uploaded it to 
[https://github.com/kerrishotts/cordova-plugin-ios-launch-screen]. It's very 
much a work in progress -- I'm sure there are a lot of edge cases I haven't 
considered, and the code isn't beautiful by any stretch of the imagination 
either. But so far, it seems to be a promising start.

That said, I'm not entirely sure about the direction I'm going, though -- the 
launch storyboard has to apply to all devices, orientations, and viewport 
sizes, so it's conceptually different from the device-specific and 
orientation-specific launch images Cordova already supports. But I'm having a 
hard time coming up with a way that works with launch storyboards and _is_ 
device specific, since the whole point of launch storyboards is to be more 
generic and to use auto layout. As such, the image I'm using is actually 
_square_, and the plugin currently just scales it up using aspect fill, which 
means image resizing and potential difficulty with the cropping that occurs 
with all possible viewports.

I suppose another option is to just provide support for moving a launch 
storyboard around, and leave it up to the dev to create the storyboard itself. 
But that requires dropping into an IDE (Either Xcode, Xamarin, etc.), which 
feels a bit antithetical to the CLI world.

So (since I brought it up on the last hangout!), I created a PoC plugin that 
generates a launch storyboard for iPad Pro support. I've uploaded it to 
[https://github.com/kerrishotts/cordova-plugin-ios-launch-screen]. It's very 
much a work in progress -- I'm sure there are a lot of edge cases I haven't 
considered, and the code isn't beautiful by any stretch of the imagination 
either. But so far, it seems to be a promising start.

That said, I'm not entirely sure about the direction I'm going, though -- the 
launch storyboard has to apply to all devices, orientations, and viewport 
sizes, so it's conceptually different from the device-specific and 
orientation-specific launch images Cordova already supports. But I'm having a 
hard time coming up with a way that works with launch storyboards and _is_ 
device specific, since the whole point of launch storyboards is to be more 
generic and to use auto layout. As such, the image I'm using is actually 
_square_, and the plugin currently just scales it up using aspect fill, which 
means image resizing and potential difficulty with the cropping that occurs 
with all possible viewports.

I suppose another option is to just provide support for moving a launch 
storyboard around, and leave it up to the dev to create the storyboard itself. 
But that requires dropping into an IDE (Either Xcode, Xamarin, etc.), which 
feels a bit antithetical to the CLI world.

Seems like iPad Pro won't be supported for launch images (and there will be no 
slot for it in asset catalogs), they want us to go the Launch Screen storyboard 
method Kerri described, so this will take longer than expected.

Would a storyboard file be helpful for the launch image? I just got an iPad Pro 
and needed to submit to the App Store, and managed to get a storyboard that 
works (as far as I can tell, anyway). Since it's XML, I suspect it could be 
used as a template. I haven't played with it much further to know for sure, but 
I may do so over the next few days.
