Hypertable does a neat thing where it changes the size given to the CellCache
(our MemStores) and Block Cache based on the workload. If you need an image,
scroll down at the bottom of this link:
 http://www.hypertable.com/documentation/architecture/
That'd be one less thing to configure.

[jira] [Updated] (HBASE-7590) Add a costless notifications mechanism from master to regionservers clients

Nicolas Liochon updated HBASE-7590:

Release Note:
This allows to setup a multicast connection between the master and the hbase
clients. With the feature on, when a regionserver is marked as dead by the
master, the master sends as well a multicast message that will make the hbase
client to disconnect immediately from the dead server instead of waiting for a
socket timeout. Specifically, this allows to set hbase.rpc.timeout to larger
values (like 5 minutes) without impacting the MTTR: without this, even if the
dead regionserver data is now available on another server, the client stays on
the dead one, waiting for an answer that will never come. It's a multicast
message, hence cheap, scalable, but unreliable. For this reason, the master
sends the information 5 times, to allow the hbase client to miss a message.
This feature is NOT activated by default. To activate it, add to your
hbase-site.xml:

  property
namehbase.status.published/name
valuetrue/value
  /property

You can as well configure the ip address and port used with the following
setting:

namehbase.status.multicast.address.ip/name
value226.1.1.3/value
/property

property
namehbase.status.multicast.address.port/name

t would be very useful to add a mechanism to distribute some information to
the clients and regionservers. Especially It would be useful to know globally
(regionservers + clients apps) that some regionservers are dead. This would
 allow:
 - to lower the load on the system, without clients using staled information
 and going on dead machines
 - to make the recovery faster from a client point of view. It's common to use
large timeouts on the client side, so the client may need a lot of time
before declaring a region server dead and trying another one. If the client
receives the information separatly about a region server states, it can take
the right decision, and continue/stop to wait accordingly.
We can also send more information, for example instructions like 'slow down'
to instruct the client to increase the retries delay and so on.
Technically, the master could send this information. To lower the load on
 the system, we should:
 - have a multicast communication (i.e. the master does not have to connect to
all servers by tcp), with once packet every 10 seconds or so.
 - receivers should not depend on this: if the information is available great.
If not, it should not break anything.
 - it should be optional.
So at the end we would have a thread in the master sending a protobuf message
about the dead servers on a multicast socket. If the socket is not
configured, it does not do anything. On the client side,

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-9465) HLog entries are not pushed to peer clusters serially when region-move or RS failure in master cluster

2013-09-09 Thread Feng Honghua (JIRA)
Feng Honghua created HBASE-9465:
---

Summary: HLog entries are not pushed to peer clusters serially
when region-move or RS failure in master cluster
 Key: HBASE-9465
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-9465
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: regionserver, Replication
Reporter: Feng Honghua

When region-move or RS failure occurs in master cluster, the hlog entries that
are not pushed before region-move or RS-failure will be pushed by original
RS(for region move) or another RS which takes over the remained hlog of dead
RS(for RS failure), and the new entries for the same region(s) will be pushed
by the RS which now serves the region(s), but they push the hlog entries of a
same region concurrently without coordination.

This treatment can possibly lead to data inconsistency between master and peer
clusters:
1. there are put and then delete written to master cluster
2. due to region-move / RS-failure, they are pushed by different
replication-source threads to peer cluster
3. if delete is pushed to peer cluster before put, and flush and major-compact
occurs in peer cluster before put is pushed to peer cluster, the delete is
collected and the put remains in peer cluster

In this scenario, the put remains in peer cluster, but in master cluster the
put is masked by the delete, hence data inconsistency between master and peer
clusters

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-9467) write can be totally blocked temporarily by a write-heavy region

2013-09-09 Thread Feng Honghua (JIRA)
Feng Honghua created HBASE-9467:

Summary: write can be totally blocked temporarily by a write-heavy
region
 Key: HBASE-9467
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-9467
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Improvement
Reporter: Feng Honghua
Priority: Minor

Write to a region can be blocked temporarily if the memstore of that region
reaches the threshold(hbase.hregion.memstore.block.multiplier *
hbase.hregion.flush.size) until the memstore of that region is flushed.

For a write-heavy region, if its write requests saturates all the handler
threads of that RS when write blocking for that region occurs, requests of
other regions/tables to that RS also can't be served due to no available
handler threads...until the pending writes of that write-heavy region are
served after the flush is done. Hence during this time period, from the RS
perspective it can't serve any request from any table/region just due to a
single write-heavy region.

This sounds not very reasonable, right? Maybe write requests from a region can
only be served by a sub-set of the handler threads, and then write blocking of
any single region can't lead to the scenario mentioned above?

When the active master's zk session expires, it'll try to recover zk session,

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-9469) Synchronous replication

2013-09-09 Thread Feng Honghua (JIRA)
Feng Honghua created HBASE-9469:
---

 Summary: Synchronous replication
 Key: HBASE-9469
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-9469
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: New Feature
Reporter: Feng Honghua
Priority: Minor

Scenario:

A/B clusters with master-master replication, client writes to A cluster and A
pushes all writes to B cluster, and when A cluster is down, client switches
writing to B cluster.

But the client's write switch is unsafe due to the replication between A/B is
asynchronous: a delete to B cluster which aims to delete a put written earlier
can fail due to that put is written to A cluster and isn't successfully pushed
to B before A is down. It can be worse if this delete is collected(flush and
then major compact occurs) before A cluster is up and that put is eventually
pushed to B, the put won't ever be deleted.

Can we provide per-table/per-peer synchronous replication which ships the
according hlog entry of write before responsing write success to client? By
this we can guarantee the client that all write requests for which he got
success response when he wrote to A cluster must already have been in B cluster
as well.

Nicolas Liochon commented on HBASE-9334:

I may miss something obvious, but I understand that the goal of this change is
to require a recompile but not modification of the client app (Recompile of
client apps likely needed after this change.).

But with this change:

bq. public KeyValue[] raw() { === public Cell[] raw() {

A client which was calling 'raw' must now be changed to use 'Cell', no?
Incidentally, it seems not possible to write a client that would work with 2
versions of HBase (i.e. modifying the client, but beeing able to compile the
modified client with a previous version of HBase).

I'm having the issue because I port the ycsb benchmark. It depends on raw.

Lastly, audience parameter for 'cell' is private, but as it appears in a public
interface I think it should be public...

Convert KeyValue to Cell in hbase-client module - Filters

 Key: HBASE-9334

 hbase-9334.v3.patch, hbase-9334.v4.patch, hbase-9334.v6.patch

The goal is is to remove KeyValue from the publicly exposed API and require
clients to use the cleaner mroe encapsulated Cell API instead. For filters,
 this affects #filterKeyValue, #transform, #filterrow, and #getNextKeyHint.
Since Cell is a base interface for KeyValue, changing these means that 0.94
apps may need a recompile but probably no modifications.

Nicolas Liochon commented on HBASE-9334:

I suppose a reasonable option would be to deprecate 'KeyValue[] raw()' and to
add  Cell[] rawCells();

(with same logic for all methods returning a keyValue today).

Convert KeyValue to Cell in hbase-client module - Filters
 -

 Key: HBASE-9334
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-9334
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Sub-task
  Components: Client
Affects Versions: 0.95.2
Reporter: Jonathan Hsieh
Assignee: Jonathan Hsieh
 Attachments: hbase-9334.patch, hbase-9334.v2.patch,
 hbase-9334.v3.patch, hbase-9334.v4.patch, hbase-9334.v6.patch

The goal is is to remove KeyValue from the publicly exposed API and require
clients to use the cleaner mroe encapsulated Cell API instead. For filters,
 this affects #filterKeyValue, #transform, #filterrow, and #getNextKeyHint.
Since Cell is a base interface for KeyValue, changing these means that 0.94
apps may need a recompile but probably no modifications.

Status: Open (was: Patch Available)

 Implement stateless scanner for Stargate

 Key: HBASE-9343
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-9343
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Improvement
  Components: REST
Affects Versions: 0.94.11
Reporter: Vandana Ayyalasomayajula
Assignee: Vandana Ayyalasomayajula
Priority: Minor
 Attachments: HBASE-9343_94.00.patch, HBASE-9343_94.01.patch,
 HBASE-9343_trunk.00.patch, HBASE-9343_trunk.01.patch

The current scanner implementation for scanner stores state and hence not
very suitable for REST server failure scenarios. The current JIRA proposes to
implement a stateless scanner. In the first version of the patch, a new
resource class ScanResource has been added and all the scan parameters will
 be specified as query params.
The following are the scan parameters
startrow - The start row for the scan.
endrow - The end row for the scan.
columns - The columns to scan.
starttime, endtime - To only retrieve columns within a specific range of
version timestamps, both start and end time must be specified.
maxversions - To limit the number of versions of each column to be returned.
batchsize - To limit the maximum number of values returned for each call to
 next().
limit - The number of rows to return in the scan operation.
More on start row, end row and limit parameters.
 1. If start row, end row and limit not specified, then the whole table will
 be scanned.
 2. If start row and limit (say N) is specified, then the scan operation will
return N rows from the start row specified.
 3. If only limit parameter is specified, then the scan operation will return
N rows from the start of the table.
 4. If limit and end row are specified, then the scan operation will return N
rows from start of table till the end row. If the end row is
reached before N rows ( say M and M lt; N ), then M rows will be returned to
 the user.
 5. If start row, end row and limit (say N ) are specified and N lt; number
of rows between start row and end row, then N rows from start row
will be returned to the user. If N gt; (number of rows between start row and
end row (say M), then M number of rows will be returned to the
 user.

Pass blocks of KVs from HFile scanner to the StoreFileScanner and up

 Key: HBASE-9440
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-9440
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
Reporter: Lars Hofhansl

Currently we read KVs from an HFileScanner one-by-one and pass them up the
scanner/heap tree. Many time the ranges of KVs retrieved from
StoreFileScanner (by StoreScanners) and HFileScanner (by StoreFileScanner)
will be non-overlapping. If chunks of KVs do not overlap we can sort entire
chunks just by comparing the start/end key of the chunk. Only if chunks are
overlapping do we need to sort KV by KV as we do now.
I have no patch, but I wanted to float this idea.

Nicolas Liochon commented on HBASE-9467:

It's not fully a duplicate, as this one is about ensuring that a workload of a
region does not impact the others. HBASE-8836 concentrates the writers, freeing
resources for the reader. But an heavy write on a region would block the others.
In any case, if you have a fixed number of worker thread, the activity of
someone in the system can block the others (vs. only slowing them).

There is no definitive solutions for this (if it's slow and you add queries it
will become slower: like it or not, the regionserver shares its resources
between all clients, and the load of a region impacts the others). I tend to
think that priorities are the best option.

write can be totally blocked temporarily by a write-heavy region

Maybe write requests from a region
can only be served by a sub-set of the handler threads, and then write
blocking of any single region can't lead to the scenario mentioned above?

When doing tests on cached data, one of the bottleneck is the getInstance()
 on HTrace, called in RequestContext#set() -- Trace.isTracing()
When it's fixed, we see threads blocked in sendResponse and in the metrics
 (with hadoop 1).
The difference is not huge (it's in the range 0-5%), but there is no reason
 to keep this.
I'm sending a pull request to htrace.

Can we provide a read-only mode for a table? write to the table in read-only
mode will be rejected, but read-only mode is different from disable in that:
 1. it doesn't offline the regions of the table(hence much more lightweight
 than disable)
 2. it can serve read requests

HLog entries are not pushed to peer clusters serially when region-move or RS
 failure in master cluster
 --

 Key: HBASE-9465
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-9465
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: regionserver, Replication
Reporter: Feng Honghua

When region-move or RS failure occurs in master cluster, the hlog entries
that are not pushed before region-move or RS-failure will be pushed by
original RS(for region move) or another RS which takes over the remained hlog
of dead RS(for RS failure), and the new entries for the same region(s) will
be pushed by the RS which now serves the region(s), but they push the hlog
entries of a same region concurrently without coordination.
This treatment can possibly lead to data inconsistency between master and
 peer clusters:
 1. there are put and then delete written to master cluster
 2. due to region-move / RS-failure, they are pushed by different
 replication-source threads to peer cluster
 3. if delete is pushed to peer cluster before put, and flush and
major-compact occurs in peer cluster before put is pushed to peer cluster,
the delete is collected and the put remains in peer cluster
In this scenario, the put remains in peer cluster, but in master cluster the
put is masked by the delete, hence data inconsistency between master and peer
 clusters

In HbaseConfiguration.checkForClusterFreeMemoryLimit it does a check to see
if the blockCache + memstore .8 this threshold ensures we do not run out of
 memory.
 But MemStoreFlusher.getMemStoreLimit does this check:
 {code}
 if (limit = 0.9f || limit  0.1f) {
LOG.warn(Setting global memstore limit to default of + defaultLimit +
  because supplied value outside allowed range of 0.1 - 0.9);
   effectiveLimit = defaultLimit;
 }
 {code}
In our cluster we had the block cache set to an upper limit of 0.76 and the
memstore upper limit was set to 0.04. We noticed the memstore size was
exceeding the limit we had set and after looking at the getMemStoreLimit code
it seems that the memstore upper limit is sized to the default value if the
configuration value is less than .1 or greater than .9. This now makes the
block cache and memstore greater than our available heap.
We can remove the check for the greater than 90% of the heap as this can
never happen due to the check in
 HbaseConfiguration.checkForClusterFreeMemoryLimit()
This check doesn't seem necessary anymore as we have the HbaseConfiguration
class checking for the cluster free limit. Am I correct in this assumption?

And what J-D said :)

HLog entries are not pushed to peer clusters serially when region-move or RS
 failure in master cluster

In this scenario, the put remains in peer cluster, but in master cluster the
put is masked by the delete, hence data inconsistency between master and peer
 clusters

Hi, Nick,
I will be responsible for this in place of Alexey G.
As far as I understand, a separate issue was created to backport this fix to
0.94 branch.
Initially all these coverage fixes were intended to go to 3 branches: trunk,
0.95, 0.94.
So, what about backporting of this change to 0.95 also?
Currently I see it in trunk only:

$ cd ../hbase-0.95/
$ svn log . | grep -C 2 -- '-8534'

Ok to discuss it in HBASE-9359 :-) (I came here because it was referenced in
the commit).

Convert KeyValue to Cell in hbase-client module - Filters
 -

 Key: HBASE-9334
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-9334
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Sub-task

 hbase-9334.v3.patch, hbase-9334.v4.patch, hbase-9334.v6.patch

The goal is is to remove KeyValue from the publicly exposed API and require
clients to use the cleaner mroe encapsulated Cell API instead. For filters,
 this affects #filterKeyValue, #transform, #filterrow, and #getNextKeyHint.
Since Cell is a base interface for KeyValue, changing these means that 0.94
apps may need a recompile but probably no modifications.

Originally came from discussion on HBASE-9334 but is mostly relevant to the
HBASE-9359 part of the commit.

[~nkeywal]:
{quote}
I may miss something obvious, but I understand that the goal of this change is
to require a recompile but not modification of the client app (Recompile of
client apps likely needed after this change.).
But with this change:
public KeyValue[] raw() { === public Cell[] raw() {
{quote}

Good catch on the InterfaceAudience for Cell -- that should be updated. I'll
file and commit that.

The release notes here highlight the minor changes need to be done to
applications -- change KeyValue to Cell, change ListKeyValue to ListCell.

[~sershe]:

+1 on fixing to not break compat... this is not the first time recently
something was broken like that (getFamilyMap, then HBASE_CLASSPATH), can we use
normal deprecation route to avoid breaking things.
Jonathan Hsieh what do you think should be done? Would the above patch be easy
to fix up?
{quote}

I think adding parts of the old api back is possible but it will incur some
non-trivial performance cost -- generally we'll need to use
KeyValueUtil.ensureKeyValue in many places and will also need to make copy
conversions of ListKeyValue to ListCell and KeyValue[] to Cell[]. See some
of the gymnastics in place for Coprocs and Filters.

We've been updating apps/systems dependent on hbase (some flume connectors,
hive) and it has been annoying but straight forward. There are several cases
already where we have broken compat where we are not going to be able to
restore the old api (some were due to writable-protobuf conversion such as
HBASE-7215).

In this patch I've added some of the most popular convenience methods to Cell
as deprecated to minimize pain (#getRow, #getQualifier, #getFamily, #getValue).
I think adding some of the other more popular ones is reasonable but adding
everythign back is not. (a perf degraded #raw seems like a candidate now, as
well as a rename of the interface to #rawCells()). Did ycsb encounter any
other conversion pains?

Other suggestions?

This path is the second half of eliminating KeyValue from the client

 Implement stateless scanner for Stargate

 HBASE-9343_trunk.01.patch

The current scanner implementation for scanner stores state and hence not
very suitable for REST server failure scenarios. The current JIRA proposes to
implement a stateless scanner. In the first version of the patch, a new
resource class ScanResource has been added and all the scan parameters will
 be specified as query params.
The following are the scan parameters
startrow - The start row for the scan.
endrow - The end row for the scan.
columns - The columns to scan.
starttime, endtime - To only retrieve columns within a specific range of
version timestamps, both start and end time must be specified.
maxversions - To limit the number of versions of each column to be returned.
batchsize - To limit the maximum number of values returned for each call to
 next().
limit - The number of rows to return in the scan operation.

We have a 20GB heap for these regionservers which are used for a cluster which
is primarily doing random reads. We are trying to hold everything in the block
cache. We don't do a lot of writes in comparison to reads in the steady state.
When we ran a job to write quite a few entries to this cluster we noticed the
memstore was greater than the expected size: of .8GB.

With respect to the configuration, our expected block cache upper limit is ~
15GB and our memstore is ~ .8GB

If the memstore is not allowed to be less than .1, we use the default value
which is .4, combined our blockcache + memstore upper limits are: 23GB which
is larger than our total heap of 20GB.

If the memstore size is under .1 or greater than .9 the memstore size
defaults to the default memstore size

 Key: HBASE-9472

Affects Versions: 0.94.5
Reporter: rahul gidwani

In HbaseConfiguration.checkForClusterFreeMemoryLimit it does a check to see
if the blockCache + memstore .8 this threshold ensures we do not run out of
 memory.
 But MemStoreFlusher.getMemStoreLimit does this check:
 {code}
 if (limit = 0.9f || limit  0.1f) {
LOG.warn(Setting global memstore limit to default of + defaultLimit +
  because supplied value outside allowed range of 0.1 - 0.9);
   effectiveLimit = defaultLimit;
 }
 {code}
We can remove the check for the greater than 90% of the heap as this can
never happen due to the check in
 HbaseConfiguration.checkForClusterFreeMemoryLimit()
This check doesn't seem necessary anymore as we have the HbaseConfiguration
class checking for the cluster free limit. Am I correct in this assumption?

Just a note. Memstore size of 0.04 is not a good idea. You will end up creating

 Summary: htrace synchronized on getInstance
 Key: HBASE-9471

 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: regionserver
Affects Versions: 0.98.0, 0.96.0
Reporter: Nicolas Liochon
Assignee: Nicolas Liochon
Priority: Minor

When doing tests on cached data, one of the bottleneck is the getInstance() on
HTrace, called in RequestContext#set() -- Trace.isTracing()

When it's fixed, we see threads blocked in sendResponse and in the metrics
(with hadoop 1).

The difference is not huge (it's in the range 0-5%), but there is no reason to
keep this.

I'm sending a pull request to htrace.

But that might give the wrong information, no?

Like:
if isTableEnabled = false then table.enable

then we will try to enable the table but it doesn't exist?

I agree that it's a corner case. We should not even call isTableEnable call on
a table which doesn't exist, expect if one process is removing it while another
one is trying to access it...

Can we provide a read-only mode for a table? write to the table in read-only
mode will be rejected, but read-only mode is different from disable in that:
 1. it doesn't offline the regions of the table(hence much more lightweight
 than disable)
 2. it can serve read requests

Jonathan Hsieh commented on HBASE-9334:
---

The main goal here is to do the onerous but necessary task of narrowing the
API. Today we expose too many internals that will hinder our ability to do
optimizations (like pushing encodings data out the client for them to interpret
instead of having the rs interpret and then re-encode ship and then having the
client interpret again).

[~nkeywal] The concerns here are seem to be on the HBASE-9359 parts? I think
the release notes for filter part is accurate when the filter part was a
standalone patch (I ended up committing it together with HBASE-9359 because it
had a compile problem.).

Let's move this to HBASE-9359?

Convert KeyValue to Cell in hbase-client module - Filters

 Key: HBASE-9334

The goal is is to remove KeyValue from the publicly exposed API and require
clients to use the cleaner mroe encapsulated Cell API instead. For filters,
 this affects #filterKeyValue, #transform, #filterrow, and #getNextKeyHint.
Since Cell is a base interface for KeyValue, changing these means that 0.94
apps may need a recompile but probably no modifications.

The pretty printer could do a better job with metadata. For example:

Currently there is no support for specifying filters for filtering client
requests. It will be useful if filters can be configured through hbase
 configuration.

Here's the patch that I used to search for missed row keys.

The row keys in the RowLogSearchJob are the ones that were referenced but not
found.

I found the keys in 5 different wal logs. (so it doesn't seem like it's an
issue with reading the wal log)

This was then checked like this:

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-9440) Pass blocks of KVs from HFile scanner to the StoreFileScanner and up

2013-09-09 Thread Lars Hofhansl (JIRA)

Lars Hofhansl commented on HBASE-9440:
--

I have not thought about this yet. Ideally all the next(...) methods on the
scanners (at least StoreScanner and StoreFileScanner) would have a version that
return a sorted KeyValue[]. HFileScanner is a bit weird in that you have to
call next() and then call getKeyValue to get the current KV, but if
StoreFileScanner could just call this repeatedly and pass a block up, that
would be good enough.
Next: Test HFileScanner.next followed by getKeyValue() directly, to see what
the expected maximum throughput should be.

Pass blocks of KVs from HFile scanner to the StoreFileScanner and up

 Key: HBASE-9440
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-9440
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
Reporter: Lars Hofhansl

Currently we read KVs from an HFileScanner one-by-one and pass them up the
scanner/heap tree. Many time the ranges of KVs retrieved from
StoreFileScanner (by StoreScanners) and HFileScanner (by StoreFileScanner)
will be non-overlapping. If chunks of KVs do not overlap we can sort entire
chunks just by comparing the start/end key of the chunk. Only if chunks are
overlapping do we need to sort KV by KV as we do now.
I have no patch, but I wanted to float this idea.

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-9469) Synchronous replication

[~lhofhansl] has a blog post that covers this:
http://hadoop-hbase.blogspot.com/2012/01/replication-for-ha-and-dr.html

Basically you need to enable KEEP_DELETED_CELLS on your families. I have a
draft for a new piece of documentation that we could add to the ref guide that
I should probably contribute :)

Synchronous replication is still a feature we could add though.

 Synchronous replication
 ---

 Key: HBASE-9469
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-9469
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: New Feature
Reporter: Feng Honghua
Priority: Minor

 Scenario:
A/B clusters with master-master replication, client writes to A cluster and A
pushes all writes to B cluster, and when A cluster is down, client switches
 writing to B cluster.
But the client's write switch is unsafe due to the replication between A/B is
asynchronous: a delete to B cluster which aims to delete a put written
earlier can fail due to that put is written to A cluster and isn't
successfully pushed to B before A is down. It can be worse if this delete is
collected(flush and then major compact occurs) before A cluster is up and
that put is eventually pushed to B, the put won't ever be deleted.
Can we provide per-table/per-peer synchronous replication which ships the
according hlog entry of write before responsing write success to client? By
this we can guarantee the client that all write requests for which he got
success response when he wrote to A cluster must already have been in B
 cluster as well.

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-9245) Remove dead or deprecated code from hbase 0.96

 ]

Jonathan Hsieh commented on HBASE-9245:
---

Here's motivation for 0.96 vs 0.98:
1) There would be perf degradation due to api shimming at multiple locations
that actually affects the common case (see HBASE-9359, and some of the
grossness in the filter api shim).
2) There are many other apis that have been removed already, that break
exiting apps so it seemed better to get them all at this time instead of
guaranteeing that it will happen again.
3) I believe the changes are fairly minimal (a type change) and efforts are
being made to minimize the impact after this type change is being done.
4) Not doing it now blocks a whole class of optimizations from coming in as
minor feature additions until we have another chance to break the api.

Here's motivation for the overall removal of KV from the client/common api:

In 0.94, KV is a concrete implementation that is present on the serverside and
the client side. The internal structure and layout is exposed such that all kvs
are locked into being a single contiguous array/base pointer (for the entire
KV) with offsets and lengths into this base pointer for each of the major
fields (row, fam, qual, value, ts). This means each kv has a fully copy of all
these fields.

In 0.96 we've introduced encodings that break the single base pointer
assumption. The Cell interface exposes what is essentially multiple base
pointers (one for row, fam, qual, val, just returning long for ts). This will
allow us to use more efficient encodings that can allow us to share
rows/fams/quals from multiple KV's with the a single array.

Currently in 0.96 there are two implementations of Cell -- KeyValue (a cell
backed by a flat contiguous array), and PrefexTreeCell (a cell backed that uses
multiple base pointers to share prefixes). Currently the PrefixTreeCell is
only on the RS side (actually only at the store file I believe) and we have to
do a bunch of interpreting on the RS side to convert to KV's, and then ship to
clients.

By changing the client/common API to only use the Cell interface, we decouple
the interface from the implementation. This opens opportunities for push KV
encodings up from the HFile level into the scanners, and the flexiblity to send
encoded kvs to the client.

It is important to do the client api first since these will be the longest
living, and other changes from here on will be likely be internal to RS's or
only additions to the rpc protocol which should not break compatibility as
future 0.96 api+wire compatible hbases come around.

This is an umbrella issue that will cover the removal or refactoring of
dangling dead code and cruft. Some can make it into 0.96, some may have to
wait for an 0.98. The great culling of code will be grouped patches that
 are logically related.

Jonathan Hsieh commented on HBASE-9359:

So we should rename the Cell raw() to Cell rawCells() and provide a deprecated
and inefficient KeyValue[] raw() method.

For one dependent system we were talking about backporting parts of the cell
api back to 0.94's kv (#getValueArray, #getRowArray, #getFamilyArray,
#getColumArray) so that a conversion could be done in 0.94 in a way that is
mostly ready work in 0.96. If [~lhofhansl] is amenable to that I could get
that done hopefully in the next week.

This path is the second half of eliminating KeyValue from the client

This hook helps to perform split on user region and corresponding index
region such that both will be split or none.
With this hook split for user and index region as follows
 user region
 ===
 1) Create splitting znode for user region split
 2) Close parent user region
 3) split user region storefiles
 4) instantiate child regions of user region
Through the new hook we can call index region transitions as below
 index region
 ===
 5) Create splitting znode for index region split
 6) Close parent index region
 7) Split storefiles of index region
 8) instantiate child regions of the index region
If any failures in 5,6,7,8 rollback the steps and return null, on null return
throw exception to rollback for 1,2,3,4
 9) set PONR
 10) do batch put of offline and split entries for user and index regions
 index region

 11) open daughers of index regions and transition znode to split. This step
we will do through preSplitAfterPONR hook. Opening index regions before
opening user regions helps to avoid put failures if there is colocation

 index region

 11) open daughers of index regions and transition znode to split. This step
we will do through preSplitAfterPONR hook. Opening index regions before
opening user regions helps to avoid put failures if there is colocation
mismatch(this can happen if user regions opening completed but index regions
 opening in progress)

 12) open daughers of user regions and transition znode to split.
Even if region server crashes also at the end both user and index regions
 will be split or none

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-9359) Convert KeyValue to Cell in hbase-client module - Result/Put/Delete, ColumnInterpreter

2013-09-09 Thread Nicolas Liochon (JIRA)

[
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-9359?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanelfocusedCommentId=13762139#comment-13762139
 ]

Nicolas Liochon commented on HBASE-9359:

The issue I have with ycsb is that I would like to keep the compatibility with
the previous hbase versions. I can do with two connectors, but it's not great.
As well, I think it's representative of a simple client (while writable are a
little bit less simple, as it means you're writing a filter).

KeyValue is not deprecated in 0.94: we're going directly from standard to non
existent. Note that I don't advocate so much for doing a deprecate in 0.96 and
a delete in 0.98: as we want to have two close releases it's more work without
much benefits.

It would be interesting if someone could write his code in 0.94 in a way that
won't break in 0.96. But even for something as simple as raw(), I'm not sure
it's possible.

I don't know how many applications out there are *not* using the API impacted
by protobuf but *are* impacted by the KeyValue removal. If ycsb is the only
one, it's an easy decision...

 ColumnInterpreter

Reporter: Jonathan Hsieh
Assignee: Jonathan Hsieh
 Fix For: 0.98.0, 0.96.0

 hbase-9359.v3.patch, hbase-9359.v5.patch, hbase-9359.v6.patch

This path is the second half of eliminating KeyValue from the client
interfaces. This percolated through quite a bit.

In the hbase shell, when a user tries to get a value related to a column,
hbase returns only the latest value. But using the REST API returns
 HColumnDescriptor.DEFAULT_VERSIONS versions by default.
The behavior should be consistent with the hbase shell.
