> The guys from Alibaba made a presentation on HBaseCon Asia about the
> synchronous replication for HBase. We(Xiaomi) think this is a very useful
> feature for HBase so we want to bring it into the community version.
> This is a big feature so we plan to do it in a feature branch.

  Issue Type: Bug

I thought I could use RetryCounter, old facility added years ago, for doing
backoff calculations. In the end, it didn't work for me because it is lacking
pb serialization. While trying to use it, I added a bit of doc and a test.
Might help the next dev that trips along this way.

Ted Yu commented on HBASE-20500:

This was the error from first test failure (patch v1):
{code}
[ERROR]
org.apache.hadoop.hbase.rsgroup.TestRSGroups.testMoveServersFromDefaultGroup(org.apache.hadoop.hbase.rsgroup.TestRSGroups)
[ERROR]   Run 1:
TestRSGroups>TestRSGroupsBase.testMoveServersFromDefaultGroup:358
{code}
This was the failed assertion:
{code}
+  String exp = "should keep at least one server in 'default' RSGroup.";
+  assertTrue(ex.getMessage().contains(exp));
{code}
If you look at the spelling of the sentence in the test and spelling in
RSGroupAdminServer.java, you would see why the test failed.

A better way of checking exception message:
{code}
+ throw new ConstraintException("should keep at least one server in
'default' RSGroup.");
{code}
is to declare a (package private) String constant in RSGroupAdminServer and
reference the constant in the test.

This way, even if the exception message is modified by anyone in the future,
the test would still pass.

Ted Yu commented on HBASE-20500:

It seems there is no material difference between v3 and v4.

In this case, you can attach v3 again which would be run by QA bot.
Naming new patch v4 may give people impression that something has changed while
that is not the case.

TestRSGroups may be flaky - investigation should be carried out to find the
cause.

> * This is a needed change due to the practicalities of having Hadoop as a
> dependency
> * Let's move up the minimum supported version of Hadoop to 2.7.1.
> * Update documentation (support matrix, compatibility discussion) to call
> this out.
> * Be sure to call out this change in the release notes.
> * Take the opportunity to remind users about our callout "Replace the Hadoop
> Bundled With HBase!" recommending users upgrade their Hadoop if < 2.7.1.

bq. A guy from Meituan also mentioned that the recoverLease on rollWriter may
take a very long time

Yeah. We've been here before. I need to study it but I think our code has the
experience from long ago where we got stuck recovering because we were renewing
the release recover request which killed whatever was ongoing ... and so on so
it never succeeded.

Let me do compare of 2.7.x to 3.0.x logging and code.

I can't find the hadoop3 asyncfswal issue either. Spent ten minutes. Would be
good to know if prob.

Let me look at leaving aside lease recovery till recovery time too.

> Steps to reproduce:
> 1) APPEND
> {code:java}
> hbase(main):002:0> create 't1', 'c1', 'c2'
> Created table t1
> Took 0.8151 seconds
>
> hbase(main):003:0> append 't1', 'r1', 'c1', 'value'
> ERROR: Failed to provide both column family and column qualifier for append
> Appends a cell 'value' at specified table/row/column coordinates.
>   hbase> append 't1', 'r1', 'c1', 'value', ATTRIBUTES=>{'mykey'=>'myvalue'}
>   hbase> append 't1', 'r1', 'c1', 'value', {VISIBILITY=>'PRIVATE|SECRET'}
> The same commands also can be run on a table reference. Suppose you had a
> reference
> t to table 't1', the corresponding command would be:
>   hbase> t.append 'r1', 'c1', 'value', ATTRIBUTES=>{'mykey'=>'myvalue'}
>   hbase> t.append 'r1', 'c1', 'value', {VISIBILITY=>'PRIVATE|SECRET'}
> Took 0.0326 seconds
> hbase(main):004:0> scan 't1'
> ROW  COLUMN+CELL
>
> 0 row(s)
> Took 0.1273 seconds
>   {code}
> While the same command would run if we run the following java code:
> {code:java}
>     try (Connection connection = ConnectionFactory.createConnection(config);
>     Admin admin = connection.getAdmin();) {
>   Table table = connection.getTable(TableName.valueOf("t1"));
>   Append a = new Append(Bytes.toBytes("r1"));
>   a.addColumn(Bytes.toBytes("c1"), null, Bytes.toBytes("value"));
>   table.append(a);
>     }{code}
> Scan result after executing java code:
> {code:java}
> hbase(main):005:0> scan 't1'
> ROW  COLUMN+CELL
>
>  r1  column=c1:, timestamp=1522649623090,
> value=value
> 1 row(s)
> Took 0.0188 seconds
> {code}
>
> 2) INCREMENT:
> Similarly in case of increment, we get the following error (shell):
> {code:java}
> hbase(main):006:0> incr 't1', 'r2', 'c1', 111
> ERROR: Failed to provide both column family and column qualifier for incr
> Increments a cell 'value' at specified table/row/column coordinates.
> To increment a cell value in table 'ns1:t1' or 't1' at row 'r1' under column
> 'c1' by 1 (can be omitted) or 10 do:
>   hbase> incr 'ns1:t1', 'r1', 'c1'
>   hbase> incr 't1', 'r1', 'c1'
>   hbase> incr 't1', 'r1', 'c1', 1
>   hbase> incr 't1', 'r1', 'c1', 10
>   hbase> incr 't1', 'r1', 'c1', 10, {ATTRIBUTES=>{'mykey'

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-20500) [rsgroup] should keep at least one server in default group

2018-04-28 Thread Ted Yu (JIRA)

[
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-20500?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=16457585#comment-16457585
 ]

Ted Yu commented on HBASE-20500:

For the new test, please add the following at the end of the method:
{code}
LOG.info("Remove group "+fooGroup.getName());
rsGroupAdmin.removeRSGroup(fooGroup.getName());
{code}
Otherwise the foo group would stay, potentially interfering with subsequent
tests since we have no control over the order of subtests.
{code}
   if (RSGroupInfo.DEFAULT_GROUP.equals(srcGrp.getName())) {
 checkOnlineServersOnly(servers);
   }
+
+  if (RSGroupInfo.DEFAULT_GROUP.equals(srcGrp.getName()) &&
srcGrp.getServers().size() <=
+  servers.size()) {
{code}
As you can see, the new condition can actually be moved to under the condition
directly above it.
It would be easier to read.

I ran TestRSGroups with patch v2 locally and it passed.

Once the above comments are addressed, I will integrate.

Thanks

Oh the UT is in another package. Will move TestReplicationSource to

Overall LGTM. +1.

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-20503) [AsyncFSWAL] Failed to get sync result after 300000 ms for txid=160912, WAL system stuck?

A guy from Meituan also mentioned that the recoverLease on rollWriter may take
a very long time and make the cluster stuck. I'm not sure whether HDFS supports
overwriting a file which is being written currently. If it does, then we can
just skip the recoverLease part. At least for hadoop-2.7+. the lease renew is
based on a file id, not the file name, so finally the file which has been
overwritten will hit the lease timeout and NN will help close and then delete
it.

And for hadoop-3.0.x, there is a bug for AsyncFSWAL because some private API
changes. There is a issue for it but I do not remember the id...
