You cannot, the bug doesn't let you upgrade. During the upgrade, 1.7.0
binaries try to parse the table descriptors and it blows up (META to begin
with).

[jira] [Updated] (HBASE-26070) Tooling to auto-convert 1.7.0 serialized tables to 1.7.1 compatible tables

Bharath Vissapragada updated HBASE-26070:
-
Release Note: Tables metadata created on a 1.7.0 cluster with faulty
serialization from HBASE-26021 is now automatically rewritten with correct
serialization format at active master bootstrap. Refer to hbase upgrade
documentation on 1.7.x for further details.

[jira] [Updated] (HBASE-26021) HBase 1.7 to 2.4 upgrade issue due to incompatible deserialization

Bharath Vissapragada updated HBASE-26021:
-
Release Note: Incompatible table metadata serialization that was added to
1.7.0 is undone by this change. This faulty serialization causes upgrade issues
from pre-1.7.0 versions to 1.7.0/2.x. Release 1.7.0 will be withdrawn from
mirrors and the suggested upgrade version is 1.7.1+.

Release Note:

Before this issue, thrift1 server and thrift2 server are totally different
servers. If a new feature is added to thrift1 server, thrfit2 server have to
make the same change to support it(e.g. authorization). After this issue,
thrift2 server is inherited from thrift1, thrift2 server now have all the
features thrift1 server has(e.g http support, which thrift2 server doesn't have
before). The way to start thrift1 or thrift2 server remain the same after this
issue.

[jira] [Updated] (HBASE-25984) FSHLog WAL lockup with sync future reuse [RS deadlock]

2021-07-09 Thread Bharath Vissapragada (Jira)

 [
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-25984?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
 ]

Bharath Vissapragada updated HBASE-25984:
-
Release Note: Fixes a WAL lockup issue due to premature reuse of the sync
futures by the WAL consumers. The lockup causes the WAL system to hang
resulting in blocked appends and syncs thus holding up the RPC handlers from
progressing. Only workaround without this fix is to force abort the region
server.

> We use FSHLog as the WAL implementation (branch-1 based) and under heavy load
> we noticed the WAL system gets locked up due to a subtle bug involving racy
> code with sync future reuse. This bug applies to all FSHLog implementations
> across branches.
> Symptoms:
> On heavily loaded clusters with large write load we noticed that the region
> servers are hanging abruptly with filled up handler queues and stuck MVCC
> indicating appends/syncs not making any progress.
> {noformat}
> WARN [8,queue=9,port=60020] regionserver.MultiVersionConcurrencyControl -

> Overall the WAL system is dead locked and could make no progress until it was
> aborted. I got to the bottom of this issue and have a patch that can fix it

Not able to comment in L333, but that should not be queue.peek()? Also
mind including the ioe stack in LOG.warn() while you are there.

Hi @julia-emelyanova. Thanks for your contribution, mind filing a jira at
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE and including it in the commit
name? You can see some examples here https://github.com/apache/hbase/pulls.
Change looks fine I can commit once you include the jira ID.

   Thanks @saintstack.

percentage

Does this mean we can kind of ignore this case (assuming objects not in
cache will get GC'ed regardless of their netty based refCount)? Still thinking
about this.

sorry there is no jstack now, and we have no more ideas about the reason of WAL
stuck. But we have made a script monitor for this problem, I'll attach the
