I would definitely like us to have docs on common ops needs, such as handling 
manual splits.

I liked the exposition in the mail thread on why you'd do it and that automated 
splitting does not help w/, for instance, timeseries.

I think user's question was more related to the logic behind doing manual 
splits more than the way to do it. Like, under which use-case do we want to do 
a manual split. 

I'm not sure we want to document that deep.
