Our branch-1 builds on builds.apache.org have been failing in recent days
after we switched over to an official version of Surefire a few days back
(HBASE-4955). The version we're using, 2.17, is hit by a bug
 ([SUREFIRE-1091|https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/SUREFIRE-1091]) that results
in an IOException, which looks like what we're seeing on Jenkins.

What you think [~dimaspivak]? I'm thinking we resolved as fixed by the linked
too much logging fix you did and the update to surefire 2.18-SNAPSHOT.

I set branch-1 and master back to DEBUG level logging (master was on INFO,
branch-1 was on WARN-only). branch-1 has been blue overnight with a legit
failure on occasion. Thought is that the HBASE-12353 which got rid of a bunch
of spew fixes the branch-1 issue. Lets see.

A build of HBase-1.0 [just passed|https://builds.apache.org/job/HBase-1.0/380]
(log level on branch-1 is back at DEBUG and the log-spew reduction from
HBASE-12293 was present), so I think this is probably safe to resolve as fixed.
What do you think, [~stack]? Since this is no longer blocking builds, we may
want to hold off updating Surefire until 2.18 is officially released.

HBASE-12355 includes upping our SUREFIRE to 2.18-SNAPSHOT (as per [~eclark])
suggestion. Will see if it goes in.

[~dimaspivak] has been watching the branch-1 builds with help from Apache
INFRA/BUILDS (Andrew Bayer). H11 is sick and we sometimes land on an
underpowered machine. Set jenkins to avoid these machines for now.

Damn, looks like just removing the output redirection isn't enough ([stream
error is back|https://builds.apache.org/view/All/job/HBase-1.0/364/console]).
Might as well move logging back to WARN, [~stack]. One thing that's a bit
strange is that it doesn't seem to be caused by any particular test since the
same number of tests completed before the error occurs is constant (3430, as
seen [here|https://builds.apache.org/view/All/job/HBase-1.0/348/testReport/]
and [here|https://builds.apache.org/view/All/job/HBase-1.0/347/testReport/])
even though the tests are run in random order. It's also worth pointing out
that a large number of tests produce logs over 5 MB (some over 50 MB) even
though the test that uncovered SUREFIRE-1091 only had to output 1 MB. And, of
course, there's the why does this only hit branch-1? question that I can't
answer either. I'll keep digging...

Done. Made it this in the branch-1 build:

-PrunAllTests -DreuseForks=false -Dmaven.test.redirectTestOutputToFile=true

Why trunk mostly pass and branch-1 does not? Surefire is same for both?

Our branch-1 builds on builds.apache.org have been failing in recent days
after we switched over to an official version of Surefire a few days back
(HBASE-4955). The version we're using, 2.17, is hit by a bug
 ([SUREFIRE-1091|https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/SUREFIRE-1091]) that results
in an IOException, which looks like what we're seeing on Jenkins.

Unfortunately, switching logging down to INFO didn't help any of the builds go
blue. Should we temporarily set it to WARN as in the original patch and, if
that helps things, revert HBASE-4955 while I clean up the loud tests? The 5
days of all-red runs makes me sad.

Or another thought... what if we set this Jenkins job to not reuse forks
between test classes? On my own test rig, I've set this to false to reduce
potential cross-test interference and my builds haven't failed even after
HBASE-4955 went in.

I think changing the log level is not a good idea (I added a comment in the
related jira: it's very common to discover NPE when you activate logs, and it's
a very bad user experience: something does not work as expected, you activate
the debug logs to understand and then you get a NPE.).
If we don't want to pay the testing cost of the debug logs, then I'm +1 for
removing them (seriously: they are becoming useless as we now run info by
default). But if we keep them in the code we must keep them in the tests.

You have a point [~nkeywal]

The idea here is to change log level to see if profuse logging is breaking
surefire. Mind if we try the [~dimaspivak] change a while or you thinking we
should just go through tests to find the ones that are logging a bunch and do
some weeding?

but as [~nkeywal] pointed out, it may not be failing there if that test output
is a bit less verbose. I'll file a separate issue to address the log too much
phenomenon, but we may want to back out HBASE-4955 temporarily to get the build

:-( Looks like it failed again, [~stack]. Starting with

java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.RuntimeException: java.io.IOException:
Stream Closed - [Help 1]
{code}
on about 10 occasions. This seems to be consistent with the Surefire bug, which
happens when a test that writes enough to output to have Surefire switch to a
buffer file then tries writing to stdout during @AfterClass.

The other thing that makes me suspect this is related to the switch of plugins
is that the JIRA notes that In case of reuseForks=true and forkCount1, this
would even result in a hanging maven process; secondPartTestsExecution runs
with forks reusing JVMs and with a fork count of 2, and that's always when
Maven dies. Could someone with Jenkins privileges on builds.apache.org perhaps
add {{-e}} to the Maven command being executed so that we can see a full stack
trace if/when this happens again? That'll give us the definitive answer as to
whether this is [SUREFIRE-1091|https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/SUREFIRE-1091]
or not.

after we switched over to an official version of Surefire a few days back
(HBASE-4955). The version we're using, 2.17, is hit by a bug
 ([SUREFIRE-1091|https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/SUREFIRE-1091]) that results
in an IOException, which looks like what we're seeing on Jenkins.

Looks like there isn't yet a 2.18 version of surefire-junit47. Since this only
seems to be hitting branch-1, is it worth just reverting HBASE-4955 for now,
[~eclark]?

Weird [~dimaspivak] It just passed.
https://builds.apache.org/view/H-L/view/HBase/job/HBase-1.0/326/ A few test
failures look a little dodgy but others look legit. You think it the surefire
plugin? Ain't we running same verison on trunk which has been passing usually?
