[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-15666) shaded dependencies for hbase-testing-util

If this is resolved through making a new shaded artifact available in Maven
Central Repository (presumably, {{hbase-shaded-testing-util}}), then this will
likely require a corresponding fix to the new {{maven archetype for client
application with shaded jars}} that was produced in HBASE-14878 (will need to
simply change the test scope dependency of the archetype to the new shaded
artifact).

I was thinking about just turning `hbase-testing-util` into a fat jar with the
dependencies relocated.

I would love it in 1.3, but I don't have the time. Presuming no one else

This is a really interesting set of failures...

Running your project as is against 1.2.0, {{mvn test}} gives me a stack trace
but actually completes.

Swapping to 1.4.0, I get a CNFE and the test fails to run.
{noformat}
testHbase(com.repro.hbase.TestHBase)  Time elapsed: 2.227 sec  <<< ERROR!
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
org/apache/hadoop/hbase/shaded/org/mortbay/jetty/servlet/Context
{noformat}

Swapping further to 2.0.0-beta-1, and replacing shaded server with shaded
mapreduce the test fails with:
{noformat}
testHbase(com.repro.hbase.TestHBase)  Time elapsed: 2.461 sec  <<< ERROR!
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Could not initialize class
org.apache.hadoop.hdfs.web.WebHdfsFileSystem
{noformat}

I'm not sure if these are all the same problem or different problems, but I'll
start poking at them separately.

bq. so either we need a new module, i.e.
hbase-shaded/hbase-shaded-testing-util, that shades the hbase-testing-util
module in the same way we shade the client
I just tried this and without further messing of the defaults, it only
relocates junit stuff and excludes everything else. Dependency resolution is
hard.

Sean Busbey commented on HBASE-15666:

if you make a downstream client that uses the shaded client (e.g. [YCSB's
hbase12
implementation|https://github.com/brianfrankcooper/YCSB/tree/master/hbase12]),
you can't run any hbase minicluster based tests because the
hbase-testing-utility artifact pulls in all of the third party dependencies
that were removed by using the shaded client in the first place.

so either we need a new module, i.e.
{{hbase-shaded/hbase-shaded-testing-util}}, that shades the
{{hbase-testing-util}} module in the same way we shade the client, or we can
convert {{hbase-testing-util}} into a shaded jar (right now it is an empty jar
that pulls in the transitive dependencies needed to use our tesitng stuff). If
we do the latter, we need to make sure it works when testing non-shaded client
use (unless we also switch to using the shaded client by default)

now that I write this out, I'm not sure I've actually made things clearer. did
that help?

I'm not sure. Let me try to repeat what you said in the context of a specific
use case...

If I were to use the YCSB-hbase12 shaded client to attempt to run against a
minicluster, then we would expect that to fail? That seems odd. I see that such
[tests
exist|https://github.com/brianfrankcooper/YCSB/blob/master/hbase12/src/test/java/com/yahoo/ycsb/db/hbase12/HBaseClient12Test.java]
 and I presume that they have been verified for YCSB releases (correct me if I
have too much faith in the YCSB devs here)

Or do those tests not run the right tests to trigger the problem? I'm still
struggling to understand how to reproduce this.

Hi

Checking in to see if there are any updates on this. In Yarn we are using hbase
as the backend for the timeline service v2 feature and we would like to start
using the shaded hbase client.
But for the unit tests, I am running into issues with the mini cluster not
being up due to the master not being initialized.

I also see a bunch of
{code}
java.lang.NoSuchMethodError:
org.apache.hbase.thirdparty.io.netty.handler.codec.protobuf.ProtobufDecoder.(Lcom/google/protobuf/MessageLite;)V
{code}

AFAIK there's been no progress on this and no one is currently actively looking
at it. I am reasonably certain you can't use the testing module and the shaded
client modules at the same time as they currently are.

Thanks [~busbey] , appreciate the response!

So, just thinking out loud here about my options. We happen to have a separate
module for the tests that use the mini-cluster, called as
'hadoop-yarn-server-timelineservice-hbase-tests'.

This module only has test code and is not required for cluster deployment. So,
perhaps in the pom for that module, I can use the non-shaded client (&
dependencies) in test-scope and exclude the shaded jars inherited from other
dependent modules. Do you think that might be worth a try?
