[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-20447) Only fail cacheBlock if block collisions aren't related to next block metadata

I have attached a new patch that fixes the master patch. I figured out that it
was an incorrect forward port w.r.t returnBlock nothing broken with shared
memory [~anoop.hbase] (sorry for pulling you in on that).

> When we pread, we don't force the read to read all of the next block header.
> However, when we get into a race condition where two opener threads try to
> cache the same block and one thread read all of the next block header and the
> other one didn't, it will fail the open process. This is especially important
> in a splitting case where it will potentially fail the split process.
> Instead, in the caches, we should only fail if the required blocks are
> different.

Added a patch incorporating [~apurtell] and [~yuzhih...@gmail.com] 's comments.

[~anoop.hbase] Yes this is what I did to make this pass consistently in
branch-1, but that isn't working for the master branch patch (with some
additional modifications, I needed to release the object first).

 Cacheable existingBlock = getBlock(cacheKey, false, false, false);

This change in if is for making your test to pass always? You mean the test
fail even after this? Ideally that would be not possible.
And I dont think it has to do some thing with shared cache

Andrew Purtell commented on HBASE-20447:

An IOE should only be thrown if there is actually IO involved, hence the *IO*
part of IOE. This is an assertion failure so we could use Preconditions. Note
what Preconditions throws are all subclassed from RuntimeException.
https://github.com/google/guava/wiki/PreconditionsExplained  Seems entirely
appropriate here.

Ted Yu commented on HBASE-20447:

w.r.t. RuntimeException, developers would possibly miss the fact that
validateBlockAddition would throw exception if they don't look at the
implementation.
Throwing IOE, on the other hand, signifies that the validation may fail. I
think it would facilitate maintainability of the related code.

[~apurtell] Yep, Ted brought up a similar thing with the log level. I'll adjust
that to debug. Thanks for the review!

[~yuzhih...@gmail.com] This has been a RuntimeException for quite some time.
Any hard reasoning on why this should change to an IOE?

Otherwise your comments look good, I'll try to incorporate them.

[~anoop.hbase] I'm running into some issues getting the test to pass in master
(I think) due to the shared memory cache. What is happening is that even after
adding a block to the cache, the getBlock is returning the incorrect block. I
believe this might be related to it not being put in the backingMap yet, but
I'm not sure. Do you have any insight on that? Thanks!

The "Cached an already cached block .. This is harmless" log line should be
DEBUG level I think. I have this patched as such internally. Otherwise the
warnings concern operators without being actionable. So in your patch where you
have introduced more WARN level logs where the comparison differs by
nextBlockOnDiskSize the same thing applies I think.

Otherwise lgtm

the log clearer as to why the decision of caching is made ?
{code}
+if (includeNextBlockMetadata) {
+  destination.putInt(this.nextBlockOnDiskSize);
{code}
The flag only guards one field. Would includeNextBlockOnDiskSize be better name
for the parameter ?

> Only fail cacheBlock if block collisions aren't related to next block metadata

> When we pread, we don't force the read to read all of the next block header.
> However, when we get into a race condition where two opener threads try to
> cache the same block and one thread read all of the next block header and the
> other one didn't, it will fail the open process. This is especially important
> in a splitting case where it will potentially fail the split process.
> Instead, in the caches, we should only fail if the required blocks are
> different.
