Good docs, thanks [~wzheng]. Here are the links for the new parameters in
Configuration Properties:

* [Configuration Properties -- hive.max.open.txns |
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/Hive/Configuration+Properties#ConfigurationProperties-hive.max.open.txns]
* [Configuration Properties -- hive.count.open.txns.interval |
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/Hive/Configuration+Properties#ConfigurationProperties-hive.count.open.txns.interval]

By the way, I reformatted the links you created in the Transactions doc. You
had the right syntax for an "Advanced" link but they were made as Web links so
they didn't work.

In general, "Advanced" should be used in the Edit link window for links within
the wiki because then Confluence will fix them if someone renames a page or
moves a section to a different page. (Or sometimes I use the Search function
if the wiki page has unusual characters in its title that can't be entered in
Advanced mode.)

Doc note: Added TODOC1.3 and TODOC2.1 labels for the new configuration
parameters *hive.max.open.txns* and *hive.count.open.txns.interval*. They will
need to be documented in the wiki for 1.3.0 and 2.1.0 (but not 2.0.x).

The Exception being caught from startHouseKeeperService is thrown by the class
instantiation:
{code}
openTxnsCounter = (HouseKeeperService)c.newInstance();
{code}
But I think I can move this line into the try block, and make this method not
throw exception, so that we can best effort. I don't think we want to fail all
txns just because we cannot start the counter service.

what I meant is
{noformat}
public OpenTxnsResponse openTxns(OpenTxnRequest rqst) throws MetaException {
384 if (openTxnsCounter == null) {
synchronzied(TxnHandler.class) {
385   try {
if (openTxnsCounter == null) {
386 startHouseKeeperService(conf,
Class.forName("org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.txn.AcidOpenTxnsCounterService"));
}
387   } catch (Exception e) {
388 throw new MetaException(e.getMessage());
389   }
}
390 }
{noformat}
http://www.cs.umd.edu/~pugh/java/memoryModel/DoubleCheckedLocking.html

One more thing:
startHouseKeeperService() catches Exception and logs but when openTxns() calls
startHouseKeeperService() it catches and rethrows.

Seems contradictory. Did you want to fail all txns if this service is not
available or make best effort?

I think maxOpenTxns numOpenTxns tooManyOpenTxns should all be volatile since
they are accessed by different threads
I would make LOG.warn("Transaction database not properly configured ... be
"error"
You don't need to add "OpenTxnsCounter" - nothing bad can happen if
AcidOpenTxnsCounterService runs in parallel - it's just a count(*) query
Because TxnHandler exists in standalone metastore (e.g. HS2), you probably need
to start AcidOpenTxnsCounterService from TxnHandler.setConf() but such that
there is only 1 instance of AcidOpenTxnsCounterService per JVM

Please spell out txns in the description of *hive.count.open.txns.interval* in
HiveConf.java (and a period at the end would be nice, even though it's a
sentence fragment):

{code}
+HIVE_COUNT_OPEN_TXNS_INTERVAL("hive.count.open.txns.interval", "1s",
+new TimeValidator(TimeUnit.SECONDS), "Time in seconds between checks

[~wzheng]
1. I think HIVE_MAX_OPEN_TXNS should higher by default.  50K? 100K?  (10 nodes
streaming into table with 100 partitions and txn batches of 10)
2. HIVE_COUNT_OPEN_TXNS_INTERVAL This should probably be 1s.
3. TxnHandler.countOpenTxns()
- Seems like this should be at least a WARN _LOG.debug("Transaction database
not properly configured, " + ..._
- _numOpenTxns = new AtomicLong(rs.getLong(1));_ why does this need AtomicLong?
 Seems like volatile would be sufficient
- Seems like _LOG.debug("Failed to update number of open transactions");_
should be at least at info
- this method should probably have retry logic like all public methods (e.g.
_addDynamicPartitions()_ )

4. TxnHandler
- shouldn't _maxOpenTxns_ and _tooManyOpenTxns_ be static just like
_numOpenTxns_?

5. TxnHandler.openTxns()
- Perhaps the exception message should read something like "Maximum allowed
number of open transactions has been reached. See hive.max.open.txns."
- This should probably be logged at WARN before throwing (include current
number of open txns)

6. AcidOpenTxnCountService
- Why is _getStartDelayMs()_ using HIVE_COUNT_OPEN_TXNS_INTERVAL. Could
probably just hardcode the value

7. TestTxnCommadns2. testOpenTxnsCounter
- please see runHouseKeeperService() - it has logic to prevent it from spinning
forever. In fact, you can just use this method and pass in the instance of the
the new service.
- it would make sense if this test also committed or aborted some txns to make
sure following openTxns() succeeds

AcidHouseKeeper uses a ScheduledExecutorService. It run multiple tasks on
separate schedules. I don't think there was ever a proposal to run any
threads on client side.

The idea Wei and I discussed was to run a single thread per metastore JVM to
count number of txns periodically and check the computed value in
TxnHandler.openTxnx() each time it's called.
I think this is conceptually the same as your idea.

It's easy enough to have HouseKeeper run multiple tasks, but it complicates
testing since it makes it harder to just run one iteration of a particular
task. We'd need to do some refactoring in HouseKeepers to make sure this is
possible - then they can be combined into a single HouseKeeper that runs
multiple periodic tasks.

Wei, I said earlier that putting this computation in AcidHouseKeeper was a bad
idea but I was wrong. Since there is a single AcidHouseKeeper per JVM, the
task that it runs can easily just set a static variable on TxnHandler with
results of the computation which openTxns() can read.

As far as testing, look at TestTxnHandler for example, there are multiple
examples openTxns() calls. In fact each call can open many txnxs at once.
TestTxnCommands.testTimeOutReaper() has an example on how to run the
HouseKeeper in UT, but like I said, you'd need to refactor it a bit if you want
to run multiple tasks in it.

Definitely we want it more done more frequently for countOpenTxns. I wasn't
suggesting they should be in the same thread. I see the disconnect now. I was
thinking of AcidHouseKeeperService as a threadpool, but it isn't, it's one
thread.

So I think in general we should consolidate these threads into one pool. We
should think too about whether the initiator, worker, and cleaner threads
should be handled in such a pool as well. But all that's out of the scope of
this JIRA.

For this particular thread I still think we should run it server side and not
client side. Unfortunately for now that means a second HousekeeperService
implementation. But I think it's better to do that and clean it up later than
it is to put the thread pool in the wrong place.

OK, one more concern, is it a good idea to have performTimeOuts() and
countOpenTxns() share the same check intervals? We may want to do it more
frequent for the latter one.

I think the problem with having the thread in TxnHandler instead of
AcidHousekeeper is that every client will be independently deciding whether the
system has too many transactions. This has a couple of problems. One, it's
inefficient as every client is running the count query. But two, it means
differing configurations could result in some clients seeing the system as
overloaded and being locked out while others are not. In fact, a malicious
client could game the system and set his config high so that he can continue to
open transactions when other clients cannot.

On the 90% what I'm suggesting is this:
# In the initial state it accepts new transactions until it hits X number total
transactions open, where X is the configured value
# When it hits X, a full flag is set
# Once the full flag is set no new transactions are allowed in
# The full flag is not unset until the number of open transactions hits X * 0.9.

This is standard procedure with thresholds so that you give the system some
time to drain off rather than building up a set of clients retrying on opening
their transactions that all race to get that one available transaction once one
transaction commits or aborts.

Thanks [~alangates] for review. I had discussion with [~ekoifman] last week and
thought it would be better to have a separate threadpool for that. We can
revisit this and see if AcidHouseKeeperService is a good reuse.

For the open transactions limit, we just want to fail the incoming open
transaction requests if the number from background counter is above threshold.
So even if e.g. we let it in when under 90%, it will still lurch in and out
around that 90% line.

There's already a threadpool in AcidHouseKeeperService. This should use that
rather than having its own separate threadpool.

Once the number of open transactions exceeds the threshold you should require
it to drain a ways below that (maybe 90% of the threshold) before allowing new
transactions. This avoid it constantly lurching in and out of trouble.
