deal directly with kerberos stuff, or are inside major, hard-to-test classes.

+1. Don't like the reflection, but not sure there's an alternate that scales

[~sershe] - I'm not sure the changes to MapRecordProcessor and the read path
are required either. I'll look at the UGI code to see what happens in case of
new threads being created etc. From what I remember, UGI context is not
transferred correctly in case of thread pools (or not updated when a new work
item is submitted to a threadpool). That, however, may not be an issue for us -
since there's a single UGI instance being used.

Do we want to retain the old functionality of sending tokens and running under
the ugi with tokens added ? LlapTaskCommunicator would need to be modified to
stop sending in some of the tokens (the session token is still required).
Using a single UGI for the entire daemon implies a single FileSystem instance
afaik. I wonder if this can cause performance issues - with the underlying DFS
client and IPC connections being shared. [~gopalv] - do you have any idea about
this ?
If this is the case, it should be possible to create a UGI per task (there's a
separate jira for a UGI pool - which would be ideal), which will have access to
the keytab.

Nit: Instead of calling this hdfsUgi - can we call it a kerberizedUgi or some
such ? It's not really tied to HDFS.

[~sseth] the problem is that you actually need to log in from keytab in the
first place, and doAs somewhere, to be authenticated, as far as I can tell.
Don't you? Does Tez runtime already login from keytab somewhere above
TezProcessor? I suspect current user will have tokens but no keytab.

As for tokens... that is the default approach, right? The standard for Hive
queries, there's no reason for regular Hive users to do this keytab stuff, it's
just for Spark or whatever that won't propagate proper tokens and runs with
doAs=false, so Hive user has access to all the data anyway.

We have to login from keytab and then doAs - maybe we can do that right when
the daemon starts up - so that all other execution is within this context. I
believe threads etc are taken care of.
Tez does not do any kerberos logins. What it does instead is to create a ugi
with the tokens - and run everything within a doAs block using this ugi. I'd
imagine it will be the same for a ugi with kerberos credentials.

For the tokens - I don't think we need to retain this functionality at all. For
regular Tez jobs - the kerberos login should be sufficient (including to talk
to HBase etc).

FileSystem.get() - eventually goes and looks up a cache to see if an instance
has already been created. That uses the ugi as a key. In ContainerRunner (or
somewhere i the execution code) - we go and do a FileSystem.closeAllForUgi() -
to get rid of FileSystem instances which were created for a fragment. With a
single ugi - a single FS ends up getting used, and the closeAll cannot be
invoked. The perf implications of this is something I'm not sure about.

I actually want to minimize the scope of login from keytab to only the
necessary points. Also current user is set only in doAs, do you want to run all
of init in doAs? I don't know if it's a good idea.
For regular Tez jobs there will be no keytab potentially, also this won't work
for storage based auth; or for non-secure in any form (because IIRC you still
need tokens for HDFS then, right?).

As for FS, I see. It doesn't use UGI as key, it just iterates thru all the
FSes. It looks like UGI::equals only compares the subject, and Subject::equals
compares credentials and principal. I'd assume they would be the same if we
just log in twice from keytab, no? I can change the patch to log in anew every
time, but I am not sure that would help.

bq. I actually want to minimize the scope of login from keytab to only the

Don't really see a problem in doing this. This ofcourse relies on external
access being secured properly.

bq. I actually want to minimize the scope of login from keytab to only the

It definitely breaks storage based auth. Data will only be accessible if the
hive user has read access.

bq. As for FS, I see. It doesn't use UGI as key, it just iterates thru all the
FSes.
FileSystem.get() - eventually looks up a cache, which uses ugi as part of the
key (the 'Key' class in FileSystem). Both hashCode and equals compare the ugi.
The subject is compared as object equivalence. (return subject ==
((UserGroupInformation) o).subject;)

[~sershe] - TaskRunnerCallable already creates a UGI (taskUgi) with the tokens
which are passed in over the RPC request. This is passed in to the actual task
executor and used to execute the entire task. I think it will be a lot simpler
to setup this UGI instances appropriately, instead of modifying TezProcessor,
LlapInputFormat, Orc* etc. The entire task runs in the context of this UGI.

I don't think we need to retain the token sending behaviour. However, if we are
retaining it, we should stop sending the tokens if the LLAP instances are
configured to run with keytabs.

Comments on the patch.
- TaskRunnerCallable has a check on taskUgi being null, at which point it falls
back to current behaviour. That'll never happen though since
SecurityHelper.createUgiFacatory returns a NoOpFactory if the configs are not
setup correctly.
- I think we'll need a UGI pool of sorts in this patch itself. Logging in with
kerberos credentials for every task will bring down the KDC.
- There's some additional changes to MapRecordSource - which appear to more
than simple formatting changes. Shouldn't be part of this patch.

Sergey Shelukhin commented on HIVE-13391:
-

A different approach - clone the UGI. Solves both the token problem, and the
undesirable FS object sharing.
I filed HADOOP-13081 to add a proper API for this... I'll add reference to that
in the TODO comment in the next iteration or on commit.
