Test results:
org.apache.hive.jdbc.miniHS2.TestHs2ConnectionMetricsBinary.testOpenConnectionMetrics
(batchId=255) didn't fail on the second testing run of the same patch.
TestEncryptedHDFSCliDriver failed on master branch locally, and Ptests didn't
report it as failing.

Uploading new patch with fixes for checkstyle violations and Peter's Review
Board suggestions.

Hi Karen, I took at the patch again, it looks good.  As I didn't see a review
board, I'll leave a few comments and question here.

1.  I was confused which log file is the one you are populating in the web ui,
is it the operation log?  If so is it possible to use
OperationLog.getCurrentOperationLog() for this?  I mention this as it seems the
way to get the file location seems too fragile.

2.  MapRedTask line 510, why not import StringUtils?

Thanks a lot for taking time on this

[~szehon], thank you so much for taking a look! I really appreciate your taking
the time.

To answer your questions:
 # The method I use to get the log4j logs is just refactored code from
HadoopJobExecHelper. My initial thought is that since HadoopJobExecHelper is
the main source of information for MapRedStats, getting the log file from here
is a good idea; plus, OperationLog seems to be quite distant, i.e. accessible
through SessionManager only. But I'll look into this further.
 # org.apache.commons.lang.StringUtils is already imported in MapRedTask,
however here I am using hadoop.util.StringUtils. As far as I can tell, this is
how errors are logged in Hive, for example in Driver and SemanticAnalyzer.

Hi Karen, sorry for the StringUtils, I missed this on my end that it's already
imported.

For the OperationLog I saw its accessible from a ThreadLocal, I wonder if it
will work.

Hi [~szehon], any clues as to which ThreadLocal you are mentioning?

Also, it would appear that operation log files are deleted after the operation
is complete by default (HIVE_TESTING_REMOVE_LOGS
default: true; and see OperationLog.close()). When run locally, they are
deleted, but I don't have the means to debug this on a cluster. Any insights
here?

(I'm glad you brought this up because the code I moved to LogUtils to get the
log file hadn't been updated for log4j2. So a new patch is incoming no matter
what:))

Hi [~szehon] – never mind, I think I have a solution, and I understand why
finding the operation logs would be useful even if they are deleted. I will
include the operation logs in the next patch with a note to the user that they
will be deleted when the query completes. I will keep the path to the full log
as well.

Thanks so much again for your input, it is much appreciated.

> Hi all,
> I’m working on a feature of the Hive WebUI Query Plan tab that would provide

> Stages are color-coded if they have a status (Success, Error, Running), and

Hello, [~klcopp] and [~pvary], I just stumbled across this Jira and it looks
like a really cool addition, I am sorry to have missed it.  I will add a link
to the webui uber Jira to make it easier to find.  Would love to get it
committed, would you want to rebase it?

Also do you know why we need to have a flag to configure whether to update MR
stats?  Is there some kind performance implication if we just did all the time?

Hi [~szehon],

Will try to find some time to rebase the patch, but currently there are plenty
of stuff on my plate - if by any chance you have more time, I will definitely
can review it.

As for the parameter for refreshing the stats - for every running query this
keeps extra stuff in memory. But IIRC we thought it more important, that some
users might be confused if a JSON is printed for them on the WebUI :)

Thanks for taking a look at this! If you do not have time to pick this up, I
will definitely try to revisit this some time in the future, and will ping you
when it is rebased.

Peter

> Hi all,
> I’m working on a feature of the Hive WebUI Query Plan tab that would provide
> the option to display the query plan as a nice graph (scroll down for
> screenshots). If you click on one of the graph’s stages, the plan for that
> stage appears as text below.
> Stages are color-coded if they have a status (Success, Error, Running), and
> the rest are grayed out. Coloring is based on status already available in the
> WebUI, under the Stages tab.
> There is an additional option to display stats for MapReduce tasks. This
> includes the job’s ID, tracking URL (where the logs are found), and mapper
> and reducer numbers/progress, among other info.
> The library I’m using for the graph is called vis.js (http://visjs.org/). It
> has an Apache license, and the only necessary file to be included from this
> library is about 700 KB.
> I tried to keep server-side changes minimal, and graph generation is taken
> care of by the client. Plans with more than a given number of stages
> (default: 25) won't be displayed in order to preserve resources.
> I’d love to hear any and all input from the community about this feature: do
> you think it’s useful, and is there anything important I’m missing?
> Thanks,
> Karen Coppage

> Any input is welcome!
