> Most of the tests are "only" using the {{src}} table and possibly 2 others;
> however the main init script contains a bunch of tables - meanwhile there are
> quite few other tests which could possibly also benefit from a more general

> proposal for storing a dataset:
> * the loader script would be at: {{data/datasets/__NAME__/load.hive.sql}}
> * the table data could be stored under that location

Zoltan Haindrich commented on HIVE-18051:
-

I've gone thru the changes, so here are my comments :)
 * {{test.src.tables}} has to be set to the the joined version of {{srcTables}}
to enable the table protector ; please add 2 negative tests to check that
dropping a dataset fails; if its not there; then the table "protector" will not
prevent changes to it (EnforceReadOnlyTables.java)
 * I now think that it would be better to enable it for all the q tests; at
least parse the files all the time and look for the dataset pattern; it's too
defensive this way - there won't be any problems :)
 * why is the sample dataset setting hive.stats.dbclass to fs? it was like
that? we should probably set it in hiveconf.java / hive-site.xml ; doesn't seem
to be something which belong to the dataset itself...

other minor notices:
 * data/files/kv1.txt has the same content as data/files/testdataset.txt
 * I feel that we shouldn't be loading all datasets upfront; just load what's
needed to run the actual test...that could enable to remove the dataset from
the cliconfig interface ; and move it to somewhere when the test is being
executed; in the current design it would only work for the {{CoreCliDriver}}
family tests - this probably come handy later; last week I've created a junit
rule which is able to run driver tests from ide; incorporating into that later
might make it more convinient
 * 1 dataset = 1 table ; I think the Dataset interface should show the
contract; for now I don't think an interface is neccessary, because theres only
1 implementation

it's great that you are working on this; I'm looking forward to start using it!

The failures have nothing to do with the patch, so it's good.

as a matter of fact yes, just a bunch of drop statements :)
{code:bash}
cat data/scripts/*cleanup*sql
{code}

I think if we really need it later; it will be easy to add it back...but they
are only used for table drops... there might be in the future other things
which will need to be cleaned up - but I think in those case we should do the
"general approach" - like what we have currently for functions/tables...

I have to also note that I personally "hate" the cleanup script; because its
executed prior to the tests; and its very annoying to see my breakpoints
trigger for those statements --  I've to always disable the relevant ones;
enable a set of "workaround" breakpoints and change everything back when my
real statement is compiling..

Do these scripts contain only tables? For tables, databases, functions we have
a cleanup infrastructure, but it sill might be useful to have the possibility
of the cleanup scripts if we want to use other type of resources. What do you
think?

I think it would be almost the same to cleanup any existing tables prior to
creating them via some \{{drop table if exists ...}} statements. - and that way
we could just forget about this cleanup all togetheror another option: we
already have a "table protector hook" which drops every non-protected tables; I
think we may just empty the protected table list in the afterclass phase; and
get back the same output as having hand written "cleanup scripts" which would
just do the same...

Hi [~pvary]!

Separate/independent cleanup scripts sounds good, i'll implement it.
Also check some whitespace errors in affected classes.
Thanks for the review.

Peter Vary commented on HIVE-18051:

Hi [~abstractdog],

Just a quick question:
{code}
//setInitScript("q_test_init_src.sql"); // we won't need this any more:
HIVE-18051
setCleanupScript("q_test_cleanup_src.sql");
{code}

Would it be better to have a cleanup script for every dataset? It seems a
little confusing to use the common cleanup script to drop tables created by a
dataset file.
Maybe check the checkstyle/whitespace errors too if you have time.
Other than this, looks good to me.

Thanks,
Peter

Cool! This feature will help in reducing debugging time a lot! :)
I've just have a few questions/notices:

* I guess that the new 'dataset' driver is present because the global change
will be done later :)
* it seems to me that if the same dataset is referenced multiple times it might
be loaded multiple times
* in QTestUtil I think srcTables contents should be set for {{test.src.tables}}
to enable write protection of the dataset tables as well

Vihang Karajgaonkar commented on HIVE-18051:

Thanks [~kgyrtkirk] for reporting this. I think its a great idea, the current
setup of the qtest is pretty heavy and most of the tests don't really need all
the set up tables. Having lightweight setup where needed would help us
reducing the execution time. We should be careful not to batch the heavy setup
qtests with the lighter ones since that might overshadow the benefits.
