should we remove the null checked added in the previous commit? JSONWriter
already supports writing null value. In StatsComponent, the response value
could be {{null}} which is already handled.

I love that this change was simple enough that it didn't actually involve
changes to RTG or other inner complex beasts. It seems that there is/was a
gotcha on
\{{org.apache.solr.schema.FieldType#write(org.apache.solr.response.TextResponseWriter,
java.lang.String, org.apache.lucene.index.IndexableField)}} such that
implementer/FieldType should be really careful about using 'f' – that it should
most likely call toExternal on it.
Can you please add javadocs to this write method about this so plugin authors
have a hope of doing this correctly?

I'll post the fix for the actual issue shortly 2. I think if a null trickles through to the response writers (which it should not), we should at least log a WARN for this.
