FYI bumping the ASM version to 7.2 via plugin dependencies also does the trick,
so this should be as easy as adding a build entry and setting a new version.

Christian Beikov commented on SUREFIRE-1264:

I just tried on a VMware virtualized RHEL and had the same problem. Starting to
think this might be a general problem on Linux.
I don't have access to a Linux installed on bare-metal, but who would run a
build on a bare-metal installed OS anyway? Isn't everything virtualized?
The surefire-test project perfectly reproduces the issue, so you should be able
to dig into the real problem when you have time.

I haven't tried on a non-virtualized Linux machine myself yet and I don't know
if the problems might be because of virtualization, but I just tried to run on
Travis CI with sudo enabled i.e. on a directly virtualized Linux without Docker
and it is stuck again:
https://travis-ci.org/beikov/surefire-test/builds/27987
I don't have a non-virtualized Linux handy, but I am not sure why that would
matter. Have you been able to test on Fedora or Ubuntu yet?

Christian Beikov commented on SUREFIRE-1264:

The problem definitely is the fact that I am executing a Parameterized test
with parallelism enabled in surefire. I disabled all other tests of the suite
already, so there shouldn't be any other side effects. The calcite-linq4j has
only normal tests, no parameterized tests. It's not a disk space problem, the
build runs through without parallelism as you can see here:
https://travis-ci.org/beikov/calcite/builds/278513374

The problem appears only in this combination AFAICT: Docker with 2 CPUs,
Parameterized test and surefire with parallelism enabled
Here is even a minimal test case(https://github.com/beikov/surefire-test) that
shows the problem: https://travis-ci.org/beikov/surefire-test/builds/278521316

I suspect this might be a general Linux problem as the build works fine on
Windows. Hope this helps you to find the issue.

[jira] [Commented] (SUREFIRE-1264) Some tests can be lost when running in parallel with parameterized tests

Christian Beikov commented on SUREFIRE-1264:

No security manager or any special flags AFAICT. The message is printed because
of a perm size option that is replaced with metaspace in Java 8. I got rid of
all output you mentioned but it still hangs:
https://travis-ci.org/beikov/calcite/builds/278083407
Travis CI kills builds that don't print anything within 10 minutes, but this
testcase should run through, so it indeed still hangs.
No uses of the mentioned APIs as far as I can see in the code.

I don't understand why this would only be a problem on Linux. Maybe it's a
concurrency issue?

Still hanging: https://travis-ci.org/beikov/calcite/builds/277637640

I haven't had the problem on Windows either, just in the Docker container so
far, but I assume this might be a general problem on linux, though I can't say
for sure.

Christian Beikov commented on SUREFIRE-1264:

I am trying to build Apache Calcite on Travis CI with a parallel configuration
and am consistently running into a hang. I tried various versions of the
Surefire plugin(1.18, 1.18.1, 1.19.1, 1.20.1) and all seem to have the same
problem. I did a thread dump after a timeout, but I am not sure what the
problem is. It seems to be related to this issue. For testing purposes I
disabled every test but the seemingly problematic parameterized test and in
fact, it hangs consistently:
https://travis-ci.org/beikov/calcite/builds/277258873
Without the parallel configuration or when running with a single CPU, the
problem doesn't seem to happen.

You can run this on a custom VM too. I configured a VirtualBox VM with 2 CPUs
and 4GB RAM and ran the following commands to execute this locally

{code}
docker run --name travis-debug -dit travisci/ci-garnet:packer-1503972846
/sbin/init
docker exec -it travis-debug bash -l
su - travis
git clone --branch=travis-test https://github.com/beikov/calcite.git
cd calcite
mvn -Dsurefire.useFile=false -Dcheckstyle.skip=true test
{code}

The exact configuration is

{code}
1
true
both
once

Christian Beikov commented on MWAR-111:
---

This issue is really a pain. I have to duplicate all of my dependencies because
of this.

Transitive dependencies of optional dependencies are included in WEB-INF/lib

 Key: MWAR-111
 URL: https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MWAR-111
 Project: Maven WAR Plugin
  Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 2.0.2
 Environment: Maven 2.0.7, JDK 1.6.0_01-b06, JavaEE 5
Reporter: Chris Lance
 Attachments: AbstractWarMojo.java, MWAR-111.patch, TestProject.zip

I have an EAR project (TestEAR) which contains two modules:
 1. A JAR module (TestJAR) which has one dependency: commons-lang 2.3
 2. A WAR module (TestWAR) which uses [these
 instructions|http://maven.apache.org/plugins/maven-war-plugin/examples/war-manifest-guide.html]
to declare a dependency on TestJAR so that TestJAR is included in TestWAR's
manifest classpath, but not copied into WEB-INF/lib (i.e. declares the
 dependency optional).
This works fine for TestJAR itself, but its transitive dependency
 (commons-lang 2.3) is still copied into WEB-INF/lib. I don't believe this is
the correct behavior since all dependencies of a JAR packaged in the EAR must
also be packaged in the EAR. So, all a WAR should have to do is put the
transitive dependencies in its manifest classpath to inherit them. Basically:
in a WAR, transitive dependencies of optional dependencies should inherit
 the optional flag.
I have included a simple test project as an example. Unzip, cd TestProject,
and mvn install. Look in TestEAR's target dir and you will see that
commons-lang is included in the EAR. Then look in TestWAR's target dir and
you will see that commons-lang is also included in both the manifest
 classpath and the WEB-INF/lib dir.
