Confirming this is a still and issue and not a big workaround, as noted by the
comment above. It works with a repository with {{archetype}} as
recently as Maven 3.5.2. But in Maven 3.6.2+, you need to use the
{{}} and not an {{ tag.

FYI, we finally managed to have the {{archetype}} repository work for fetching
the catalog.
We had to activate the profile containing the {{archetype}} repository in the
{{activeProfiles}} list of the {{settings.xml}}.
It does not work if we activate the profile with the {{-P}} option or with
{{true}} (which
still seems quite strange to me)

important enough to have a look at, trying to find the bug and provide a patch

I'm pretty sure that all hardcoded references to Maven Central have been
removed from this plugin. It means that it is falling back to Mavens own
defaults.

In case of a mirror I know this is working. This is a case which hasn't been
covered yet.
bq. it complains about the "archetype" repository missing despite it being
defined
Very likely related to the previous bullet.
For me this line is interesting: {{[DEBUG] Searching for remote catalog:
https://repo.maven.apache.org/maven2/archetype-catalog.xml}}. It should have
picked the archetype-repository. So this is a clear message that the
refactoring is not complete yet.
