that's exactly where I need you: can you check that your use case is addressed?
and that the usability is good? (easy to understand, so that other users like
you will find the feature)
the solution is as simple as possible. It's just a last check, because once
it's released, it can't be changed without breaking compatibility.

So what is the plan here?
It seems like adding the above attribute would be useful as a stop-gap measure
in preparation for removing or replacing the path appending logic in whatever
is the next compatibility-breaking Maven version.

In my case, I'm not using the maven-site-plugin. I have a custom plugin that

To calculate URLs you need to use the buildtime folder structure. And it should
be based by the aggregator, not the parent.
I do agree that this can be solved once we have the consumer pom in place.

IMHO, this is a perfect fit for build POM vs consumer POM: more prerequisites
on build side, since the algorithm is more complex and would be extensible
through extensions, but still easy use on consumer side (when the use is not at
build time but at consume time)
Notice: this is future, if really complex inheritance calculation are required
until now, just a "append" boolean seems to match most expectations
and your remarks make me think it's not wise to add full extensibility until we
have build vs consumer POM

I should say I agree with Robert somewhat in spirit. I'd be happy to see this
removed from Maven core entirely (because I'd be happy to see automatic path
appending set on fire and pushed off a cliff) but I don't know that what's good
for me is good for everyone else. I'd not be opposed to the removal.

I am curious though: Is the setting itself inherited? By that I mean that if I,
for example, set _child.inherit.append.path_ in my organization-wide POM, do I
need to also set it in the parent POMs of each of my projects?
For my own use, I'm looking for the least amount of repetition possible in
turning this off everywhere. I'm never, ever going to want anything to
automatically append paths, and I have hundreds and hundreds of POM files.

Now we're getting closer to my opinion: URL calculation does not belong in the
pom. This should be done by the plugin that requires that URL, in general
report-plugins and/or maven-site-plugin, maven-release-plugin, maybe a couple
more.
Especially scm URLs belong to the ScmProvider, once it starts with {{scm:}} if
is up to the provider to analyze the rest of the String. We should not do any
assumptions that it ends with a path reference for example.
My main question is: where is the result of the URL wrong? The value for
'Bundle-DocURL' used for OSGi, but that's done by a plugin, right?

as you can see, the option is available as child.inherit.append.path XML
attribute on 3 locations:
- project, for project.url
- project.distributionManagement.site for its url

Normally I wouldn't care and I'd just do whatever workaround was necessary.
Unfortunately, in my case, the workaround is "add several overrides in each and
every child module in all projects". This currently amounts to over 400 child
modules so, as you can imagine, I'm not up for applying that particular
workaround.

I've just discovered that I've been bitten by this: I've been publishing OSGi
bundles that contain incorrect URLs due to reading from
`${project.distributionManagement.site.url}`. Many of my bundles have ended up

Opened MNG-6059 as a follow-up bug as this IMHO fails to address some important
use cases.
I’m not saying that we need to have the mor eflexible but more complex
{{@inherit}} attribute I talk about above, but the fact that
{{child.inherit.append.path}} affects *all* its children makes it unable to
deal with the common use case of an inheritable {{}} configuration for
Github. :-(

I like this, could also lead to the ability to have an attribute to completely
disable inheritance of a value where you want it specified in the parent for
documentation but not carried through to the child - the first thing that comes
to mind is `description`. This may require that `inherit` is a boolean and the
inherited value override is set with an `inheritValue` attribute?
Any implementation should also be used by the Super POM so that all inheritance
logic is moved from Java code that you need to really hunt through to find to
being included in the super POM. For example the super POM could contain (to
maintain backwards compatibility):

That being said, the one issue I have with my proposal is that the child has no
way of changing the parent's {{@inherit}} rule *before* the element content is
inherited. If a child doesn't like it, all it can do is start over by spelling
out the element content explicitly and using an {{@inherit}} of its own to
change the rule for its children (aka the parent's grandchildren).
I think your simple switch solution has similar issues: Can a child project
change the value of the switch and what is the first project affected by this:
child or grandchild? This probably require a few example scenarios.

The simple switch would satisfy our requirements - I'd rather want the simple
solution implemented (fast).

that controls how a value is *transformed* when it is inherited:

The rules would be like this:
If the element's value is given, use its value as-is
If the element's value is not given, inherit from the parent by applying the
transformation in the parent element's inherit attribute. Variables like
{{project.artifactId}} are evaluated w.r.t. to the child (as if they were
element content) and the special {{inherited}} variable is evaluated to the
element content of the parent POM.
A child of the above example POM would thus has an {{}} of
{{http://example/parent/child}}; in other words, the above attribute value just
describes the current behaviour (and thus should be the default for {{}}).

I intended to add the XML attribute on each of the 5 fields, but could not
since the fields are just Strings: would require to change them into complex
types
then I added the XML attribute on parent complex type, which leads to 3
locations: project, project.scm and project.distributionManagement.site
I don't know if there are use cases where 1 unique conf for project.scm is not
enough, since we could need to differentiate connection from url?
once we are ok, IMHO, we need to have some discussion on dev@ mailing list...

simple option: {{child.inherit.append.path}}: boolean, default value=true
will apply on childs when inheriting from current POM (because applying on
current pom when inheriting from its parent does not really have any meaning,
since configuration will override value instead of inheriting)
