I re-tested this operation with exhibit file and this time it did not fail.
Several changes to the platform OS (updated) and perhaps an Apache update might
have cleared this anomaly. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks to all who
assisted.

I can also not reproduce a crash when opening the given sample document.
