Activate the Tools toolbar:
View - Toolbars... - Tools
It has an item "Direct Cursor on/off" (".uno:ShadowCursor").
Also, in the Tools - Options... dialog there is a OpenOffice Writer -
Formatting Aids - Direct cursor (on the right in LTR UI).
