I am able to recreate on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit in OpenOffice 4.2.0
using the following steps:

1. Enter a line of text, and apply numbering using the numbering button.
2. Move to the next line using the ENTER key.
3. Enter a second line of text.
4. Move the cursor to the beginning of the second line.
5. Remove numbering from the second line of text using the BACKSPACE key.
The second line of text should be lined up with the first line of text.
6. Remove indentation from the second line of text using the sliding tab in the
page ruler.
7. Try to restore indentation to the second line of text by pressing the Tab
key.
Result: The text remains left justified and no amount of pressing TAB will
indent the second line.

Additonal Tests: In addition, I tested in 3 comparable apps and found
inconsistent results. Here were my findings:

LibreOffice 5.1.1.3 - Same result as OpenOffice

Google Docs - Upon deleting the number in step 5, the entire line of text moves
to the left hand margin. Using TAB will again indent the line to its previous
position in congruence with the expected results in the original report.

Microsoft Word Online - Does not have a top rule, so step 6 cannot be
performed. While this means we can't accurately recreate the test case, step 5
does have the same result as Google Docs. The second line will move over to the
left margin and hitting TAB will again indent your second line.

Observations: Based on the above, I feel that it's reasonable to expect that
step 7 should result in the expectations outlined in the original report.
Pressing TAB should indent the line returning it to it's original position.

I am able to reproduce on AOO 4.2.0; Windows 7 Enterprise SP1

I would change the title to: “Removing Numbering using backspace causes
unexpected text indentation”, because the problem is not obvious out of the
summary

I would add additional Actual result right after the 3rd step:
Sliders of Horizontal Ruler are not synchronised now with the second line of
text - the text is not aligned according slider`s position.
Note: Move the sliders and the second line`s text will be aligned according to
sliders position

There is additional effector this problem:
Steps to Reproduce:
1) Enter a line of text, and apply numbering using the numbering button.
2) Enter another line of text.
3) Remove numbering from the second line of text using the Backspace key. The
second line of text should be lined up with the first line of text.
4) Remove indentation from the second line of text using the sliding tab in the
page ruler.
5) Place cursor at the end of the second line and click Enter button
Actual result:
New numbering item is created, but it has different indentation as the initial
list has - please see attached screenshot “New list items indentation
differ.png”

Windows 8.1

When I follow the same steps as Comment 14, I get the same behavior.

When I follow the same steps as Comment 14, but in MS Word (Version 16), the
behavior is different. The tab key causes the text to move to the right in the
usual way.

Also, I am reviewing this with Prakrut (Comment 14) at this time. His
configuration information is:

I also noticed when I performed follow up tests on the bug, I found that when
you press the enter key after performing step 8, then the numbering system will
start at “1” and the indent will be to where you placed the indent page ruler
in Step 6. This causes the original numbering system to be messed up, and does
not allow for the indent to change on the second set of numbers.

In response to Comment 15 #Robert_Booth

You are very much correct. And this will continue to happen to you press
"Enter" back to back. The indent will be still there and will not change. This
is also one type of a follow up test that I tried.

I was able to replicate this bug. The step by step process to reproduce this
bug is mentioned in detail with the screenshots in the attachment named as
"Graphical Illustration". In the last step even after pressing the backspace,
the indentation doesn't go to its original place. Here the writer doesn't exit
the numbering mode.
So, even after hitting the enter key multiple times and writing a couple of
more statements, the indentation is not found back to its original place.

 I don't understand your handling.
At step 4, indentation don't exist on horizontal ruler.
If you want to removing numbering, you must input Enter twice.

That removes numbering from subsequent lines of text.
To remove numbering from the current line, there is F12 and the Numbering
On/Off button on the toolbar.
Hitting backspace at the beginning of the line removes the line number, but
Writer never exits numbering mode.

Add screenshots for each step to show what you described.

Screenshots for each step have been added.
The hourglass slider has been circled in Step 4.
It appears to be in the same position as in Step 3, but between Steps 3 and
4, I moved it slightly and restored it to its original position.

The screenshots for steps 4 5 have been updated. Hopefully, this will make
my steps clearer.
The hourglass slider is still circled in Step 4.
The reason why I used it to remove indentation from the second line of text was
because it wasn't removed when I pressed Backspace.
