Since 2007, you can install ImpressRunner from the extensions repository, which
does wat you require: http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/ImpressRunner

Since 2007, you can install ImpressRunner from the extensions repository,
 which does wat you require:
 http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/ImpressRunner

I found this Extension but since this is a function that users expect from the
office suite IMO it should not be a separate extension.
FYI LibreOffice already does this without the need for an extension...

I disagree with you.
In my company, we don't want open pps with AOO.
We use MS-Powerpoint viewer to read this files.
So, integrate this extension is not a solution to everybody.
Except, if AOO suggest a parameter to set this behavior (see comment #4).

I agree. Providing an option is always the best decision. I think that the
installer/updater should check if .pps/.ppsx is already associated with some
other program. If it is, don't touch it. If it is not then associate with AOO.
If the user does not like this association he can disable this in the Options
and/or use whatever program he/she prefers.

This bug/enhancement request has been open since 2005. If AOO is expected to
replace MSO or installed in computers without MSO then this feature is really
needed.

The same probably applies to starting ppsx and certainly applies to closing AOO
after opening pps/ppsx https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=111311

Maybe this could be given a higher priority?
