[~srowen] to answer your question no I don't feel super strongly about changing
it. Naming is difficult in general and I think both "dynamic allocation" and
"elastic scaling" do mean roughly the same thing. It's just that I slightly
prefer the latter (or something shorter) after giving a few talks on this topic
and chatting with a few people about it in real life. I'm also totally cool
with closing this as a Won't Fix if you or [~markhamstra] prefer.

I think these are all arguably about the same, and there's a non-trivial cost
to changing it. At least, this thread here indicates there's not an obviously
better term. [~andrewor14] how strongly do you feel about this?

Actually, Sean, I'd argue that they are not the same and that something like
"elastic scaling" be retained for another concept. What Spark is doing with
dynamic allocation is to re-allocate resources from an essentially fixed pool
of cluster resources -- a particular Application may be re-assigned a different
number of Executors, for example, but the total number of Worker nodes remains
the same. Elastic scaling, on the other hand, I would argue should be applied
to dynamically changing the number of Worker nodes or other cluster resources
-- changing the size of the pool, not just re-allocating from a constant size
pool.

So you're suggesting "dynamic allocation" is a better name for what Spark does?
Although I don't have as strong a distinction in my mind, I agree those are
different ideas and could/should have different names, whatever those may be.
Spark doesn't add more YARN workers, but we can still have a name for it.

Right, I am saying that "dynamic allocation" is the right name for what Spark
currently does, and that "elastic scaling" would be a good name for changing
the number of cluster nodes (or otherwise modifying the size of the cluster
resource pool), which Spark currently doesn't do or effectively support (but
which would be a very nice feature to have.)

I must say I don't think that's worth it. Both terms seem equally sound, but
dynamic allocation has been widely used to describe the feature externally.
Renaming it doesn't seem to add much of anything in comparison.
