In both cases with the current oracle java jre installed and hadoop 2.6.4 (binaries) in place. All initial dependencies were apt-get installed from the standard upstream repositories. The issue is that it prevents the successful compilation of scala and other components. On running ./bin/pyspark is therefore: ls: cannot access '/spark-1.6.1/assembly/target/scala-2.10': No such file or directory Failed to find Spark assembly in //spark-1.6.1/assembly/target/scala-2.10. You need to build Spark before running this program. This bug is therefore a blocker for those coming new to the project and it is surprising that this has been closed with a "no problem statememnt" The errors suggest that either steps are missing in the compilation documentation or that there is a bug in the configuration / source. Similarly there are other errors reported in the above output suggesting library incompatibilities.
