I'd put this in the general class of issues where it is not clear if a string 
is an expression, a literal column name, or something in between (i.e. dots are 
allowed but nothing more complex).  It would be good to do a holistic audit of 
all of the API and come up with a proposal that is clear and makes the fewest 
breaking changes.  However, I wouldn't change just this one instance without 
looking at all the other cases.

It sounds like from Michael's comment that this is a real issue, but we don't 
want to work on it in isolation. We should probably link this to an umbrella 
task the covers the problem in a general sense, as Michael suggested.

It looks to me that we should just add more doc in `partitionBy`. The string 
there is the column name, while the string in `select` is a general expression.
