Sejak Microsoft menghentikan dukungan untuk NT4, disebutkan banyak perusahaan melirik solusi alternatif terutama masih adanya keraguan mengenai update Microsoft dimasa mendatang. Samba adalah program yang dikembangkan komunitas open source dan bebas pungutan biaya lisensi, menyediakan layanan file dan print services untuk PC-PC Windows. Samba yang terpasang di server Linux atau Unix dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai file server oleh klien-klien (desktops) baik yang ber sistem operasi Linux maupun Windows.
