[iText-questions] Cannot RIP

2004-04-01 Thread Shahzad Latif

Hi:
Client gave me a PDF which I have to customize and put some sort of factsheet at the end (as a last page). I do so using iText (concat example). Unfortunately, the printer (IBM) RIPs the individual PDF's correctly, but the merged document is giving out a postscript error. Tried my best to contact as many people, but no use. You are the last resort with the hope we have a solution.
Here is the error message:
I_OSTREAM_BB Byte Buffer Dump (length: 77 bytes)
%%[ Error: limitcheck; OffendingCommand: save; ErrorInfo: HalftoneType 1 ]%%.
I_OSTREAM_PEMSG PostScript error: %%[ Error: limitcheck; OffendingCommand: save; ErrorInfo: HalftoneType 1 ]%%
I_OSTREAM_BB Byte Buffer Dump (length: 63 bytes)
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%.
PS: I saw a similar posting online with mention if iText:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=2cce0630.-1%40webx.la2eafNXanI&rnum=5&prev=/groups%3Fq%3D%2525%2525%255B%2BError:%2Bioerror%253B%2BOffending%2BCommand:%2Bimage%2B%255D%2525%2525%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26selm%3D2cce0630.-1%2540webx.la2eafNXanI%26rnum%3D5
Also, when I pass the file through distiller, I get the following error message:
%%[ Error: ioerror; OffendingCommand: image ]%%
Stack:
-dict-
-save-
-save-
-save-

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
Here it is important to note that individual files (sourced from distiller) are RIP'ed perfect. Only when two files are concatenated via iText, we are coming across the problem.
Thanks,

No, you can build the bookmarks yourself with the class PdfOutline.

Re: [iText-questions] fonts and encoding issue

2002-11-14 Thread Shahzad Latif
Hi:

Thanks, but problem on this scenario is it will take care of only the
trademark symbol. The client can come up with any possible combination for
unicode. I guess I'll change the encoding to winansi and try the equivalent
code. Having said this, I beleive the problem might stay the same. The
string is already there and contains '&#...' text part of it (just like
unicode). Parsing might end up very expensive.

Shahzad

[iText-questions] fonts and encoding issue

2002-11-14 Thread Shahzad Latif
Hi:

Got into an intersting situation:

1) We are receiving XML data from different sources
2) We have created some java classes and loaded them in Oracle.
3) The XML data is passed as a parameter to the java sotred procedure that
creates a PDF

Character encoding in Oracle is WE8ISO8859P1.

Clients have started sending html tags in the XML data for special
characters like trademark symbol etc. Obviously, it wouldn't work. As a
remedy, we asked them to start sending us unicode strings (eg., "This is
Company A\u2122"). Where "\u2122" is the unicode for TM. Obviously, we
forgot the client was not using java. They have started sending us literally
"\u2122". This parameter ends up exactly the same with \+u+2+1+2+2 at the
end of the line on PDF.

Can someone suggest a workaround or a possible solution.

Thanks,

Shahzad

RE: [iText-questions] Using iText in a Java stored procedure

2002-11-12 Thread Shahzad Latif
I ran into similar issues few months ago. Here is something I figured out:

1) You cannot materialize anything in Oracle's JVM. eg., load image using
java.awt.image or show a frame/message etc. In NT, it will always give you
"GUI not allowed" message. Not sure what HP Unix/Solaris message text is.

A server cannot provide GUIs, but it can supply the logic that drives them.
For example, the JServer JVM does not supply the basic GUI components found
in the JDK's Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT). However, all AWT Java classes
are available within the server environment. So, your programs can use AWT
functionality, as long as they do not attempt to materialize a GUI on the
server.

To avoid this, use the image classes provided in iText. They work perfect.

Color class works in oracle JVM for you are not materializing anything.

2) Unsatisfied link error is simply because the code cannot determine
/locate the libraries. Set the classpath (in NT) or in Unix check to ensure
that your LD_LIBRARY_PATH and SHLIB_PATH are set correctly.
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=(absolutle path to O_H/lib:/usr/dt/lib:/usr/lib)
SHLIB_PATH=(absolutle path to O_H/lib)

You might have to restart Oracle instance after changes.

3) If nothing works, refer to docs 2383833, 2231226 in metalink.com.

Hope this helps,

Shahzad

awt can be used in an embedded jvm but Oracle may have decided not to
include it. I doubt that you can run anything with graphic aspirations, even
java.awt.Color will have the same problem. Or maybe Oracle has an answer to
it.
On the other hand the error has to do with native methods not found and all
this may be an installation/configuration problem.

[iText-questions] image issues

2002-10-17 Thread Shahzad Latif

I have been looking for this information for a while. So far, have not been
succesfull. Since there are some solid image classes used in iText, I
thought I'll give it a try here. My objective is to determine height and
width of various images in inches (at present formats in list are jpeg and
gif, but the list is growing). The next step is to decrease these dimensions
in inches to a specified size and then save the files for use in different
applications. Limitation is: jdk1.2.2 is the max I can go. No worries about
the resolution, but it should look and print ok. I would highly appreciate
any suggestions on this.

Many thanks,

Shahzad

Hi:

Sounds like 1.4 may help. Oracle 8i is compatible with 1.2 only. I guess we
have to change the architecture and process the files on webserver instead.

Thanks for the help.

Java 2 version 1.4 has a solution for headless environments. So you should
use the newer JDK (Perhaps Oracle a newer version to solve this problem).
Here is what Sun says about that:

[iText-questions] load image issue

2002-10-07 Thread Shahzad Latif

Hi:

We are trying to load an image using Oracle's JVM. Unfortunately, Oracle JVM
does not support any GUI (i.e., we cannot materialize any GUI). For some
reason, we have to use java.awt instead of iText's image class. iText is
always succesfull in loading the image (GIF, JPEG), but unfortunately,
java.awt is not. It gives the following message: "GUI not supported". I was
wondering if someone could share some workaround for this. Here is the line
which gives the error:

Image image = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage(fileName);

Many thanks,

Shahzad

graphics/text. Works great, but when you open it, at times it ends up too
enlarged or upside down etc. Once you click on say 'Fit to size', everything
appears to work. This issue is more or less on the browser.

2) The preferances eg., hidetoolbar, hidemenubar and some permissions end up
revoked when I try to open the PDF in a browser.

3) I have a template of around 3 pages and also pages to be created
dynamically. I want to load all the pages first and then move around from
pages to pages back and forth. Can this be done. Example of PDFTemplate was
a very good resource, but essentially, it opens the doc and starts from the
first page.

4) Some applications use some kind of blocks/forms on PDF. Can we identify
which blocks/forms are there on the PDF along with names of blocks and some
other general info etc.

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Shahzad

[iText-questions] image resolution

2002-08-14 Thread Shahzad Latif

I have images of size 5"x7", 6"x8" etc. in 300 DPI. Want to place these in a
block of width say 2.5". I want to keep the resolution the same as 300 DPI
rather than a greater number (because of scaling ratio). Without using JAI,
is it possible to do so by iText?

Thanks,

Shahzad

[iText-questions] fonts and OS

2002-08-12 Thread Shahzad Latif

I want to deploy my application on Solaris. The fonts that I have are for
Mac (.sit extension). They have to be embedded. Any way I could use them?
Also, client has refused to use true type font. What would be the best
alternative font type which I could embbed in production environment and use
them in huge IBM printers. Any possibility of type 1 font? Any suggestions
will be highly appreciated.

Re: [iText-questions] use of CMYK colors

2002-07-22 Thread Shahzad Latif

Anyone tried putting TIFF's on PDF using JAI and iText. I wish to simply
load a tiff and put on the PDF. The code (combination of something from
iText and JAI) works ok but the colors get messed up (blue to red etc.).
Some code snippet would be appreciated.

File file = new File("c:/temp/Barry_Wagner.tif");
SeekableStream s = new FileSeekableStream(file);
TIFFDecodeParam param = null;
ImageDecoder dec = ImageCodec.createImageDecoder("tiff", s, param);
int imageToLoad = 0;
RenderedImage op =new NullOpImage(dec.decodeAsRenderedImage
 (imageToLoad),null,OpImage.OP_IO_BOUND,null);
BufferedImage bi = new BufferedImage(op.getColorModel(),
   Raster.createWritableRaster(op.getSampleModel(),
   op.getData().getDataBuffer(), null),
   false, new Hashtable());
Image FAImg = Image.getInstance(bi, null, false);
c.addimage(FAImg);

Many thanks,

Shahzad

1) As far as I know java doesn't read TIFFs directly, you'll need JAI for
it.

2) JAI does all kind of image manipulation including conversion to other
colorspaces.

There's no easy way out of it and CMYK is an added difficulty.

Best Regards,
Paulo Soares

[iText-questions] use of CMYK colors

2002-07-17 Thread Shahzad Latif

Looked up a bit on java Color class but found no direct way to use CMYK
colors to be used in fonts as well as blocks of colors. Here is what I ended
up with:

For lines:
cb.setCMYKColorStrokeF(bkLineC,bkLineM,bkLineY,bkLineK);
cb.stroke();

For rectangles:
cb.setCMYKColorStrokeF(bkLineC,bkLineM,bkLineY,bkLineK);
cb.rectangle(0, 200, 300, 18);
cb.fill();

For fonts colors:
Color colorTopTitle = new CMYKColor(0f, 0f, 0f, 0f);
myFont.setColor(colorTopTitle);
ct.setSimpleColumn(titleText, 0, 0, 20, 20,20, Element.ALIGN_JUSTIFIED);
fontInterstate.setColor(mycolor);
ct.go();

Could someone please advice me if I am on right track. Not sure what the
implications could be in production using above. The printer uses CMYK
colors only and is unfortunately not accessible to me.

Regards,

Shahzad

[iText-questions] image resolution

2002-07-15 Thread Shahzad Latif

Hi:

I am experiancing trouble with image resolution and resulting PDF. To my
understanding, the default resolution is 72 DPI. My images are actually 300
DPI and I want them to be of 150 DPI in the PDF (scale percent say 48). Here
is how I am doing:

logoImg.scalePercent(48);
cb.addImage(logoImg, logoImg.scaledWidth()*logoImgLiteralScale, 0, 0,
logoImg.scaledHeight()*logoImgLiteralScale, document.left()+leftrightIndent,
currentY - logoImg.scaledHeight()*logoImgLiteralScale);

Where logoImgLiteralScale is the ratio of the size to which I want the image
to stretch. Whatever scale percent that I use, the end result is always 300
DPI and also the PDF itself is always of the same size. I want to control
the resultion myself (72,150,300,400,600 DPI's).

Any advice will be highly appreciated.

Regards,

Shahzad

[iText-questions] some what if's

2002-07-11 Thread Shahzad Latif

Hi:

Just created a decent PDF and everyone is happy. Got some what if's:

1) In one of the tutorial chapters, I have found:
PdfContentByte cb = writer.getDirectContent();
cb.setRGBColorFill(255, 0, 0);

Question: Would it be possible to use CMYK format instead of RGB.
Apparently, rip process of production does not recognize RGB format
completely. According to prod folks, all colors have to be in CMYK format.
Pardon my ignorance if any.

2) Is it possible to merge two PDF documents created seperately?

3) Is it possible to create a PDF template with some variable sections using
some software and then later at real-time open the PDF and fill in the
variable blocks?

4) Extension to 3 above: is it possible to put a seperate PDF in one of the
blocks created in the PDF template?

Thanks in advance.

[iText-questions] (no subject)

2002-06-23 Thread Shahzad Latif

Looking at the tutorial and your classes, I have successfully created a PDF
and am pretty happy to see the end result and ease of programming. Thanks a
lot. Indeed a great contribution. Got a question: Is it possible to control
the resolution of the PDF, i.e., I want to create a PDF of 300 dpi as well
as 600 dpi. Your response will be the end to my project and I would highly
appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
