Many Illustrator-produced PDFs have artifacts of information needed by
Illustrator for it to be able to edit the PDF it has produced. This insormation
is normally discarded when you embed such a PDF in a PDF produced by iText.

Re: [iText-questions] Vector Graphics not using EPS

2009-05-15 Thread Klas Lindbäck

We have the same situation where I work. We get logos (in EPS) which we
save as SVG from Adobe Illustrator.
We then convert the SVG to PDF using Batik (as suggested in the book
iText in Action). The resulting PDF is stored
in the system. I think you can also save as (or print as) PDF directly
from Illustrator.

We can then add the PDF logos to our reports via ImportedPage objects
with very good performance.

I am really impressed by the small size of the resulting PDFs. The
original EPS files are usually a couple of hundred kb,
the SVG is 30-80 kb and the resulting PDFs are ca 5 kb. Illustrator
will produce larger PDF files (around 20k), so
you can skip the Batik step if the size difference doesn't discourage
you.

  to be honest I don't know. I don't generate the logos. A graphic designer
savesthe eps as svg and then the svg can be used when I generate the pdf.

The main problem when using the Salamander code is that it is slow. My
collegue ask if I could use a pdf instead of SVG.

The bottom line is. We must use vector graphics for the logos, and maybe
some other graphics. All logos is today in EPS. What would be the best way
of getting the vector to a generated pdf?

Yes, the vector is kept by doing this.

PdfReader reader = new PdfReader( "test.pdf" );
PdfImportedPage p = writer.getImportedPage(reader, 1);
Image img1 = Image.getInstance(p);
document.add( img1 );

thanks!

If he generates an EPS and can save it to SVG,
surely he can save it to PDF too?
That seems more "natural" to me.

It's slow because there's a parser in-between.
I believe Batik is even slower.

EPS (and PS) graphics operators and operands are very similar to PDF
operators and operands, so it's not impossible to translate the PS
syntax into PDF syntax.

You were the one talking about "using SVG". IMO it's easier to translate
(E)PS into PDF, than to translate (E)PS into SVG, isn't it?

Assuming that you are asking this question because of Leonard's
suggestion: "Why can't you just use PDF?" (I don't know, you threw
away his question), I repeat my initial answer:

Note that the iText logo (both the iText Software Corp and 1T3XT BVBA
logo) are designed using Bézier curves:
http://1t3xt.be/?X000231 (using literal PDF syntax)
http://1t3xt.be/?X0003f0 (using PdfContentByte methods)

That's "using PDF"; the beauty of this solution is that your logo
is fully scalable. Look at this example:
http://1t3xt.info/examples/resources/classroom/1t3xt/hero.pdf

It's a portrait of the creator of iText in a Superman outfit with
the 1T3XT logo instead of the "S". It was created by Dick Kline,
a commercial artist (and the inventor of the Kline-Fogleman airfoil)
"using PDF" ;-)

Re: [iText-questions] Vector Graphics not using EPS

2009-05-14 Thread Mathias Nilsson

I've tried the SVG salamander for this and it worked. is this the way of
doing this. would it be fair to say that svg is used instead of eps as eps
is postscript. What are the complications of using svg with iText?

Graphics2D graphics = null;
PdfTemplate template = null;
try{
  SVGDiagram diagram = SVGCache.getSVGUniverse().getDiagram( new
java.io.File( "d:file.svg" ).toURI() );
  template = writer.getDirectContent().createTemplate( diagram.getWidth(),
diagram.getHeight());
  graphics = template.createGraphics(diagram.getWidth(),
diagram.getHeight());
  diagram.render(graphics);
}catch( Exception e ){
  e.printStackTrace();
} finally {
if( graphics != null )
  graphics.dispose();
}
Image image = Image.getInstance(template);
image.setAbsolutePosition( 0f,0f);
document.add( image );

[iText-questions] Vector Graphics not using EPS

2009-05-14 Thread Mathias Nilsson

Hi,

I'm trying to add logos in my pdf and they need to be vector graphics. I've
read in the book iText in action that only some eps are supported and when
trying with eps generated from adobe it throws an exception.

Is there a way to use vector graphics with iText. The book says SVG is
supported. Is this the preferred way or is there another path?
