Very surprised reading the following sentence : "Signing PDFs should be done by a public-private key pair that was created for signing documents." Signing operation (PDF document or whatever you want) is a two steps operation : hash & encrypt. And for that, the only crypto element you need is a private key. One other point : do you think "HTTPS certificates" really exist ? Leonard From: Jaak Vermeire [mailto:toilet...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 03, 2011 5:59 AM To: itext-questions@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: Re: [iText-questions] iText renders helvitica with too wide character spacing Hi, I'd like to elaborate a bit. It appears that the characters rendered when using Arial or Helvetica look exactly the same, so either arial or helvetica isn't included and it's using the other one to render it. But that is no problem! At least not what the problem I'm posting here is about. What I'd like to know is why it adds these spaces and wide spacing between characters, and why just changing the name of the font, affects that. I'd like to have full control over this adding of spaces myself (read: disable it). How exactly does this work, and how can I control it the way I want? I also don't want the font name to result in different spacing, I'd like to control font face and spacing between characters separately. And AFAIK arial and helvetica are very similar fonts, so it really worries me that iText decides that one of them should have a space between each character and the other not. Thanks! On Tue, May 3, 2011 at 11:56 AM, Jaak Vermeire toilet...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, if I set the font of iText to helvetica, it renders the characters quite wide with a space between each character. This is too wide to be good, it's ugly. Doing setCharacterSpacing(0) or setSpaceCharRatio(PdfWriter.NO_SPACE_CHAR_RATIO) doesn't help, they do not affect the result. When using Arial as font instead of Helvetica, everything looks fine, and there are no more spaces between the letters. But I'd like to use Helvetica. Other fonts than helvetica also have the wideness problem, it seems like only arial does not have it in fact. Why is it doing this, and how can I avoid it, to have Helvetica without wide character spacing? I think it only happens for large font sizes (e.g. 24 px). I also think the version of iText is an older one, certainly not the latest, but I'm not sure what version exactly. And the text is rendered using the Graphics2D object of iText. By spaces between letters I not only mean that it looks too wide in the PDF and when printed on paper, but also that if you select the text and copypaste it into a plain text editor, there are actual spaces between each letter. I have the second edition book but it is not helping me (this isn't the same email address as I used for the book, I always use this one on newsgroups for spam reasons), it appears to only explain how to make more character spacing, not how to get rid of it. And forum posts on the internet that look helpful, usually have a link to a support section of the itext site that has been removed... Any help would be appreciated! I'm new to this stuff. And I have only one page. Anything you can do to help? Well i don't know ;) See Brunos other mails. Please be more specific about your problem. For us it's clearly not so easy to read tee leaves since that's not our line of profession. Well, to answer your question: xdp representation of a pdf is a description in a XML dialect. Open your pdf file in a text editor and have a look at the first few lines. If it looks like the following: ?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8? ?xfa generator=AdobeDesigner_V7.1 APIVersion=2.4.5277.0?^M xdp:xdp xmlns:xdp=http://ns.adobe.com/xdp/; timeStamp=2006-04-20T08:03:09Z uuid=474654e1-7f7c-42d6-b6f8-68ee0d2a528e^M template xmlns=http://www.xfa.org/schema/xfa-template/2.4/;^M then your file contains an xdp representation of pdf. If on the other hand your file starts with %PDF-1.? the ? after the dot being a number between 1 and 7 then it is really a pdf file. My xslt style sheet does a reasonable job of transforming xdp to html but it is be no means complete. I can only compare its output to some 200 documents. I hope i could clear the mist a bit for you. regards Dirk -- _ RISC: Relegate Important Stuff to Compiler - Take Surveys. Earn Cash.
