This is what I did for 2.1 release.
I reincluded it back with introduction of selectable SASL backends in
hope that someone will fix it.
It could be useful for embedded deployments, when you do not need full
SASL library.

But since nobody seems interested in it and it does not work anyway, I'm
+1 for removing it.
