Yes, this is a real shame as i have just joined and I am getting fantastic help here. It seems my post comes to sompe people more quickly as I get private responses before i see my post on the list! Hmmm, I have been using StarOffice 5.2 and 6 Beta both with no problems but the beta has now "expired" and I cant read the sxw files in 5.2. So, I am hoping to be able to do that in OpenOffice?? You would think I have the Java there for OpenOffice if the other two progs worked? However setup cant find java. What i do seem to have is /usr/bin/java which seems to be kaffe - whatever that is. I have been recommended to install Java2 SDK and am looking to install j2sdk-1_4_0-linux-i386-rpm.bin - this may be the best for mozilla plugin? Can i then install 1.1.8 for Open or Star Office as well? I wonder if this is or should all be done by mandrake and i made an error in the installation? OR Would it be better to upgrade to Mandrake 8.2 (I may copy this post to the mandrake list.) Re: Java plugins for Mozilla in Linux
Olivier Rossel, On Fri, 05 Apr 2002 20:59, in Re: Java plugins for Mozilla in Linux, you wrote: > My piece of advice would be: > do not use the rpm.bin! > use the .bin. Could you say why? I am new to all this but have also been told to make sure the rpmdatebase remains informed of the system, for uninstall and managing dependencies. I made the mistalke of upgrading Xfree86 without rpms now Mandrake still cant use the upgraded version as it only sees the old one. I can see rpms might have their limitations, but why in this case? When you say use the .bin -- does that mean downloading it? or is it int the .rpm.bin somewhere? I am still unsure what both the phrases: use the rpm.bin use the .bin mean exactly. How does one unpack these files? (Sorry for such basic questions but every installation seems to be utterly different.) So far so good now to see if i can do the plugin bit - and then run java stuff in Mozilla! Thanks so much, this is great. modal dialogs in 1.4
We're evaluating JDK1.4 here, and find a serious issue with KDE. Many of our Java apps start by showing a setup dialog, and the way they usually do it is by listening on windowActivated for the main JFrame. That handler checks a first-time-thru flag, and if true, shows the modal dialog. What we find is that both the JFrame and the dialog come up blank (no text, no visible components) and the window's close widget doesn't respond. This is only in KDE; I tried windowmaker, enlightenment, fvwm, olvwm, and gnome, and they all worked OK. Does anybody know why this might be and if there's a workaround? KDE has always been our standard, so we'd rather not switch. -- Glenn Holmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] Programmer/Analyst phone: 414.908.1809 Weyco Group, Inc. fax: 414.908.1601 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I went ahead and did the .rpm.bin thing and it all worked marvelously. Mozilla has its plugin and OpenOffice its Java and i have learn how to do it that way AND learnt a lot in the process including the limitations of what I just did. Maybe when something goes awry I'll need to change the whole set-up. But for now I'm pleased as this was the first time I used chmod to make an executable and export to set the path etc. Walter -- Walter Logeman Psychotherapist http://www.psybernet.co.nz -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
