remove kaffe

If you're on redhat, do:

rpm -q kaffe

rpm -e

That's really strange that you are having that much trouble. Here's what
I did to install java on RedHat 6:

install redhat (easier than Windows, btw)
uninstall kaffe (rpm -e kaffe)
install jdk1.2-pre2 for linux

And everything worked from there. Just to be sure, I even installed the
1.1.7 jdks, and they worked too. The only one I didn't get to work was
jdk1.2-pre1

Re: JAVA multithread questions.

1999-07-08 Thread Alex M.

You create threads by making classes that implement runnable or extend
thread. Calling .start() on those classes will make the code in the run()
method of those classes execute in a new thread. So, that code should be
your network connecting code.

Good place to start is java.sun.com, follow the link to the Java Tutorial,
there is a section on threading that walks you through the basics.

Good luck!

Re: display text

1999-07-12 Thread Alex M.

That's because there is is no constructor for TextArea(byte[]). To do
what you are doing you need to convert the byte array into a String.

Remember, Java is not C. Characters are unicode and thus 2 bytes long.
Strings are made up of unicode characters, not ASCII.

Re: Newbie question

1999-07-30 Thread Alex M.

Like my compadres before me said, native threads run at the OS level, and
therefore can access multiple cpus. However, it is my understanding that
this is the only time native threads should be used. On single processor
systems, green threads are faster, and you aren't limited by any process
limitations in the OS. Since in native threads, each thread runs in it's
own process, you run the risk of running out of available processes. You
don't have that with green threads.

though I'm sure there are limitations on green threads as well, I don't
know whether or not they are definite or limited only by machine
capability.

display problem I need some advice and help

1999-08-23 Thread M houppertz

Hello,

I use JDK 1.1.7 v3 linux and latest version of all program and libs that

ship with redhat

I devlop program using a windows GUI (powerJ)
I want to use my what I develop in MS windows under linux.

I have 2 problems (i am using the same screen resolution under MS win
and X) :

- The windows are not the same size under MS win it depend on the pixel
and it seems
that under X it depend on the font used for X.(I have not a good idea
how to
control those fonts and how to make a match between the screens MS win
=> X)

Is there any solution ?

- Under MS win a SetEnable(false) text field is readable it only change
color.
Under X not but i want to be able to read it. Using setEditable() might
have
been the solution but then when you "TAB" between text field it entre
the also
the non editable field which is use less and i want to avoid that.
I know that it is X that deal with the disable, enable text
look/font/display

Is there a way to work around this ?

Thanks

Marc

So now you have to override all the gui components just to override one
method? I would think that would be a lot of work for very little gain,
not to mention it would add unnecessary bulk to your app, don't you think?

Everything that descends from component inherits
setBackground/getBackground and setForeground/getForeground. I don't know
off the top of my head, of any components in the java libraries that
ignore those properties.

If all you are doing is changing the look of already existing components,
you should be using PLAFs, not extending the components, thereby breaking
PLAF.

In the case of colors anyway, they use the get methods, I believe, because
I have written things that override those before and they worked fine.

Re: Float -> Double conversion bug ?

1999-09-24 Thread Alex M.

That is actually documented I believe. It's not limited to jdk1.2. I
don't know why it can't be just 0.3 but it is. This is why
the language spec says not to compare floats and doubles without casting,
you will always get negative results even though you think you should have
a positive one.

So to compare 0.3d with 0.3f you would do:

double d = 0.3;
float f = 0.3f;

if ((float)d == f) { do something };

You will lose precicion on your double variable though, so make sure you
don't need it before you do it.

Back to why you can't store 0.3 as a double. I'm guess this has more to
do with the limitations of binary representation of floating point
numbers. It's been a long time since my intro to CS courses when I
learned all this, anybody have anymore info on this?

The problem is in line 100 of Tedit.java, specifically in the constructor.
I bet you're trying to add a null object to a container, either that or
you're trying to add an object to a container that is null.

I don't use JDB unless I'm really desparate. If you use Emacs and install
the JDE for Emacs (you can get to it off of blackdown under third party
tools I think) it integrates the jdb debugger into emacs so it kind of
works like JBuilder's debugger where you can see what line you are on and
skip/trace/etc into the source code, and watch the source code while the
program runs.

So there is no added benefit to declaring a parameter final other than to

where is the "jre" executable ?

2000-11-03 Thread Olivier M.

Hello,

Sorry if it is a stupid question, but I didn't found an answer
in any doc or FAQ. Just installed latest SDK from Blackdown under
linux : javac and java are working fine, but I'm missing the
"jre" command.

I have some applications which are needing that (for example
telebanking stuff) :
exec jre -nojit -noverify -mx32m -ms32m -cp
.:lib2:lib2/ap:lib2/ap.zip:lib2/br:lib2/br.zip:lib2/sw:lib2/sw.zip DN2

Thanks for any hint :)

well, but then it's not backward compatible at all : nothing
is working (exceptions on start). I guess I will have to keep
both JDK on my system.

Thanks all for the informations :)

well, the software is running fine under 1.1.8, and
not at all under 1.3. (telebanking software from www.youtrade.ch)

jdk1.1.6-v1test applet viewer segfault.

1998-05-24 Thread Todd M. Roy

Hi Steve,

Being brave and foolhearty, I gave 1.1.6v1-test a try.

1. command line java/javac work just fine.
2. appletviewer segfaults (dump below).
3. jdb fails not being able to find libnet_g.so (which is present
for duty in /opt/java/lib/i686/green_threads.

The Particulars of my system:

Pentium, Slackware 3.x, well hacked from there.
Libc-5.4.44 based but glibc-2.0.7pre3 present.
No Motif, but lesstif available.
ld.so-1.9.9
linux-2.1.103
xFree86-3.3.2
Running with neither NS_JAVA nor DYN_JAVA set.
java home is a symbolic link.
ie
/opt/java->/opt/jdk1.1.6

Here is a dump:
The actual applet does not appear to matter.

JRE in Linux

1998-06-12 Thread Christopher M. Perez

Does Sun's JRE need to be recompiled to run in Linux? Or does it simply run the
i86 version and that's the version that gets distributed?

Do you have a link to a page that describes how all this works? I understand
the part about the JDK...

Having installed your lovely port of jdk116v2 yesterday I started right

The classpath has been set to /usr/local/jdk116v2 and compiles all

java file cannot be found. I tried "java Progress.class", java file
cannot be found...again!
You need to point your classpath to include your current directory.
This means that ./ must be in your classpath
eg. my java classpath reads
./:/usr/java/lib/classes.zip:/usr/local/swing/latest/swingall.jar..
^^
note the starting ./ path

NO! This is an *AWFUL* thing to do. Setup a procmail or filter
filter if you want to filter your messages. I read this list on a tty
from time to time, using my mail program, I'll get subjects which all read
[java-linux] a | <- screen ends here.
Headers have lots of information in them which you can use to
filter if you so desire. Subjects are there to be human readable.

If you need help setting up a filtering system, I'd be happy to
help.

1.2 for Linux

1999-01-27 Thread Stotler, John M.

I'm currently checking http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux/ports.html#jdk1.2
  once or twice a day
to see if the 1.2 JRE's been released yet, since we're releasing a 100% Java
web-based training package in the next couple of days. I noticed that around
the beginning of December it was posted that it would be released in a
month, and possibly less, but I haven't seen anything there yet.

Please don't take this as a complaint, I was just wanting to make sure that
I'm checking on the most recent information. We currently have installers
for all of the win32 platforms and Solaris, but I'd be much happier if I
could release a Linux installer. The whole thing is very heavy on servlet
technology, and won't run on anything pre-1.2 at this point.

Oh, I realize that this is a long shot, but I was wondering if there's any
work going on toward a 1.2 plugin for Linux... I find it quite amusing that
Solaris doesn't even have one yet, only the win32 platform is supported so
far.

Thanks,

This is something which is covered time and time again on this
list.

a. This is not a true open source project. The JDK source code is
not free nor open source. If you want to find an open source JDK,
checkout www.classpath.org which is far from being finished, but is free
and open.
b. The porters of the JDK are under a very strict licensing
agreement which prevents them from releasing any source at any time or
even releasing a binary until it passed the a strict set of tests called
the JCK.
c. The porters read this list, but, methinks, have stopped
acknowledging the "can I help, even though I haven't read the FAQ", "When
will this be read already?" and "You guys suck because you aren't
releasing it under the GPL" questions. They are asked and answered far
too often.

So the answer is, you can help, but you need to get a
non-commercial license from Sun. This is not open source and never will
be. Binaries will be released when they are ready and not before. Asking
will not speed it up.

java and glibc2.1

1999-03-13 Thread Seth M. Landsman

Grr ...

So debian unstable branch has gone to glibc2.1, which breaks many,
many things, including the jdk1.1.7 from blackdown. So, while I really
would like to participate in the debugging effort of debian, my lack of
having a play machine and the necessity of doing real work has to take
precedence.
Okay, so my questions are : does the jdk1.2pre1 work on glibc2.1
systems? If not, any chance we could get a glibc2.1 compiled jdk (1.1.7
or 1.2) out of you guys?

Thanks,

possible 1.2 problem report ...

1999-03-13 Thread Seth M. Landsman

Okay, I just grabbed and setup in a tmp directory the jdk1.2pre1
on a freshly installed slink debian 2.1 system. I have a research system
with a gross number of objects and files which I've written using
(exclusively) the various 1.1 blackdown jdks.
Under 1.1.7, the system initializes and launches without a
whimper. Under 1.2, the system initialies to the point where it launches
its first thread and then dies. There is no exception or error associated
with this.
I'll poke around more and give me detail, but I was wondering if
this was a gotcha people might have already seen.

BTW, I get the zapf font problems, which I haven't fixed yet.
Could they cause a problem?

Okay, let me admend the report. Specifying java -green, the

There is TurboJ, which appears to be a Java -> Native ahead of

These are not the same! The JDK appears that it will be free for

Because of the restrictions placed by javasoft on the jdk source
code, I don't think porting the jdk to QT could ever be considered free
enough to fit QT's standards. i.e., source code could never be released,
save to those who signed the NDA.

InetAddress

1999-03-30 Thread M. Suresh Babu

Hello everyone,

Im just switched over to 1.2 in linux (nice work!). Im facing one
problem. i dunno if it is a bug or correction in new release.

Using 1.1.7, the static method 'InetAddress.getLocalHost()' returns
the local machine address.

But the same in 1.2 returns some other differenet address. (
'localhost/127.0.0.1' . This is given in /etc/hosts for loopbacking!).

 try {
 System.out.println( "Local Host : " +
InetAddress.getLocalHost() );
  }
  catch( UnknownHostException exe) {}

this, prints msbabu/x.x.x.x (where x.x.x.x is my machine's IP
address) with 1.1.7

and prints localhost/y.y.y.y in 1.2

Anybody knows why this occurs?.

TIA.

Cheers,

Suresh

I have a mucking huge research system which is quite happily
depending on swing without too much effort. This is with jdk117v3 and no
JIT. The system was slow, but not unusable on jdk1.2. The only reason we
haven't looked into 1.2 more is that we're facing artificial deadlines for
delivery.

My system has always had a huge startup time, in the order of tens

Re: Modal JDialog never returns (Bug?)

1999-06-29 Thread Thomas M. Sasala

Marcel,

I ran a similar version on my system. Generally it behaved as
expected, but I
did have two strange results:

1) Every other time I clicked ok, the new message box would not render
properly. For example, the second, forth, sixth, etc., click would
have a malformed
dialog box. The buttons are cut off at the bottom.

2) It seems the app would lock up *almost* every time, not every time.
However, I can not seem
to get it to lock up when I want. I have also noticed this with an
app I am doing
for work. I locks up while rendering frames, but not as frequently
as this one does.

Hope this helps.

You need to get the Solaris implementation of the CommAPI and
RXTX. RXTX now combines Kevin's port with the native serial calls

Re: IBM-jdk

1999-07-08 Thread Thomas M. Sasala

Justin,
I recently upgraded a RH 5.1 system to RH 6.0
without too much difficultly. I sort of did the brute force
method. I downloaded all the new RPMs and then installed them
one by one, saving most of the libs for last. Then I
quickly rebooted. Aside from a small networking problem,
things seem to work fine. I did have to download a new
version of JDK though. YMMV.

Also, I chose to install many of the RPMs,
rather than upgrade them. That way the old versions
where still around (but most of them where unusable).
Use rpm -ih instead of rpm -Uh.

I am sure there is an easier way to do it.

Perhaps it takes a large API to reproduce something Apple, Microsloth,
Sun, HP, etc. have been working on for 20 years.

FWIW, I don't think the API has anything to do with write once,

Re: Has Sun Overstretch Themselves With So Many APIs?

1999-07-09 Thread Thomas M. Sasala

Visual J++ is an IDE for Windows. Unless you jump through
some hoops, it allows you to write applications that will only run
under a Windozes version of Java.

As far as I recall, Microsoft is under serious pressure
to bring J++ into line with the Sun license agreement. So much so
that Microsoft is now considering abondoning Java altogether for
its own 'technology' called COOL. Not so cool IMHO.

Surf around www.news.com for some general articles about
the whole thing.

Swing Priority

1999-07-20 Thread Thomas M. Sasala

Does anyone know what the priority of the Swing
Event processing thread is? I have an application that needs to
process very large files, but I start the thread, the main
application is still locked up. Placing a yield() in the
time consuming thread doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions?

[Fwd: Swing Priority]

1999-07-20 Thread Thomas M. Sasala

I guess I should of pointed out that I have already
tried the SwingWorker utility. I have tried various incarnations
of threading, using my real code and test code. If I have a
thread that does not sleep, then the main application locks up.
Using yield does not help. If I put a sleep in the loop, then
everything works fine (sleeping while doing a time intensive
operation is not very productive). I was hoping I could lower
the priority of my method to allow the Swing event handling code
to run.

As an aside, the SwingWorker utility does not work
using native threads (on my system). It works fine under green
threads, but it does not appear to actually switch threads.
Any suggestions?

Setting my task to MIN_PRIORITY fixes the problem, but
I think it is a suboptimal fix. So:

a) What would a better priority be?
b) Is there a better fix than thread priority?
c) Does the event handling thread run at a lower priority than
the main application, hence yield() not working?
d) Any hope for native threads in the near future?

1999-07-20 Thread Thomas M. Sasala

It's not really a problem, unless the main app does something
in an event that takes a while. Since I am currently the only one
using the app, it's not an issue. However, in the future, it
might become an issue.

Generally I was hoping to set the thread to the same
priority as the event handler and let the OS take care of
time slicing. Clearly the JVM is not that robust though.

Native threads are executed by the OS's native

LinuxPPC 1999 is a glibc 2.1 release; all JDK releases

However, on the CDROM you will find a test version of jdk1.2prev1.

Add an event listener for the child window within the main

childwindow.addActionListener(parentWindow)

You'll have to play with it to get the correct syntax. Also,

Every MS service pack introduces new DLLs. Most recently
MS has taken the stance that the newest DLLs are the best and promptly
removes any old DLLs from the system directory. Talk about breaking
applications! Heck, my wife managed to develop an MS Access app that
works fine under 98, but won't work under 95. It says the DATE function
is not available! The upshot - DAO went from version 3.5 in 95 to 3.51
in 98; clearly MS has work to do to keep things running. And W2K will
only make things infinitely worse.

> Apple provide major versions of software every few years with updates,

Apple spends a lot of time making sure most apps work. That's
because they don't write many of them like MS does. They actually have
to work
with other SW houses :)

With a rapidly moving target like Linux, it's hard to make an
app work everywhere. However, 2 points here. Generally speaking, any
app with the correct libraries will most likely work under various
different kernels (2.0-2.2). There are exceptions, of course.
Secondly, given the same version libraries, and nearly the same kernel
level,
a given app should run on most of the distributions, be it RH, Debian,
Caldera, etc.

The key here is the libraries, not necessarily the distribution
or even the kernel. (Although, each major kernel release breaks as many
things as it fixes ;)).

BTW, isn't Java supposed to free us of porting problems ;)

Java is crossplatform, so, it is highly unlikely that a class package
uses something so intel-specific (if it doesn't use JNI). However, the
JVM *might* be smart enough to do such a thing.

Not being familiar with the package, I can't say. It is
possible though. FWIW, did you mean the java native interface (JNI)
or Jini (the 'technology')?

JAVA on LINUX (RedHat 6.0)

1999-10-02 Thread Patrick M. Alleyne

I was wondering anyone could help me and/or point me in
right direction to the following issue I have with Linux and
JDK117/JDK1.2;

I seem to have multiple process instances when ever I issue
the interpreter ($JAVA_HOME/bin/jre, $JAVA_HOME/bin/java) with any versions of
Linux that I have

RedHat 6.0
libc.so.6 => libc.2.1.1.so

- Applets/Class's will still run properly, although there
should only be one(1) instance.

ibm jdk 118 and apache jserv

1999-01-02 Thread Aaron M. Stromas

greetings,
having read how fast the ibm's jvm is i decided to compile apache jserv
with it. unfotunately, i was getting a library load errors, "unsatisfied
symbol: __bzero" in libjava.so. the old trick of defining macro bzero in
term of memset didn't work this time.  what would be the least intrusive
way of getting over this annoyance, perhaps, adding a to libjava.so a sourrce
with the macro defining bzero?
besides, i should not have to do that at all, it must be somehow resolved,
otherwise it wouldn't work, period.
any suggetions? tia,
-a
