Can the AMD64 build create heaps greater than 4GB in size?

Thanks,

Has anyone had a problem with "jar tvf" using v4a or v5 of the Blackdown JDK?

1998-11-04 Thread Scot P. Floess

I had a problem with the jar command which appears to occur with v4a and
v5. Specifically, when I

jar cvf my.jar

all is well and the jar file is created. However, when I attempt

jar tvf my.jar

I get an error (sorry, my Linux box is at home, so I do not have the
exact error). Anyway, the error is more-or-less about not knowing the
compressed size of my.jar and displays absolutely nothing about the
file. I can

unzip -l my.jar

to see the contents. Also, if I use v2's jar, I can see the contents of
the jar file which was jar'd with either v4a or v5.

This isn't a big issue because I can use v2 - just wondering if anyone
else has had the same problem.

JDK1.1.5 thrashing

1998-06-18 Thread Scot P. Floess

Hi! I was wondering if anyone has had this problem?I have been
having problems running more than one JVM under RedHat Linux 5.0. I
downloaded the JDK 1.1.5 from Blackdown and installed it fine. When I
run more than one version of the JVM, the machine thrashes so badly that
any java programs running become practically unuseable. I am running on
a Pentium 166 with 128 MB of RAM. Initially I had done a full install
of RedHat. The JVM performed so badly I reinstalled the OS with barely
anything. The JVM then performed adequetly. When I run one JVM, the
machine runs fine. Two or more JVMs and the machine thrashes. Any help
would greatly be appreciated.

Re: Linux Takes Lead in Server-Side Java Performance /IW November 23, 1998

1998-11-25 Thread Scot P. Floess

I agree. Tower J is somewhat limited in terms of full java capabilities, ie
compiles the complete application before hand. Now if the linux JVM were to
perform as well as some *other* vendor's JVM, we would all have great reason to
celebrate! Please do not misunderstand, I love linux and java. However, my
experience has been that under Windoze, my Symantec JVM and JIT perform better
than the Blackdown port and the TYA JIT.

I will say this, the latest release (1.1.7 v1a and TYA 1.1.4) are the best yet and
are getting better - so I have absolutely NO complaints - great job!

Minimum configuration for JRE use?

1999-01-31 Thread Scot E. Wilcoxon

The FAQ has vague references to JDK resource needs.

Anyone have an estimate of the minimum configuration
needed for the Linux JRE? That is, what's the smallest
system which can run Linux Java programs, not the JDK?
(I happen to be wondering about 486 12M RAM/20M disk
at the moment)

Running more than one JVM

1998-07-08 Thread Scot P. Floess

I have posted this question before, but received no responses.  I
hope someone can help!

I am running RedHat Linux 5.0 on a pentium 166 with 128 MB of RAM, 2.5
GB harddrive, and 127 MB swap file.  I am using the JDK 1.1.5 from
Blackdown.  I notice that the JVM runs VERY slow and hogs my system.
OK, I downloaded the TYA JIT and I get some speed improvements.  However,
when I attempt to run more than one JVM, my system is virtually unusable
- the harddrive thrashes, the .  I have had problems getting the JDK
1.1.6 running, so I have been sticking with the 1.1.5.  If I cannot
resolve this problem, I am going to drop Linux and go with Solaris 2.6.

Thanks in advance!

JDK 116 install question

1998-07-14 Thread Scot P. Floess

I recently posted a question about running more than one JVM where my
machine would thrash horribly. I reinstalled RedHat Linux 5.0, the
latest glibc and v1 of the JDK 1.1.6. The performance difference was
incredible! It ran acceptably without a JIT!

Now, another question: after about an hour of use using javac and java,
I am now experiencing sig seg v coredumps. The jre does not work either
- same problem. I am willing to reinstall Linux, glibc and the JDK if
necessary. Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks to all your help in advance!

does anyone know what happened to kaffe.org?

1998-07-27 Thread Scot P. Floess

I have tried for over a week to go to www.kaffe.org to no avail. Does
anyone know what has happened to the web site?
