 Hi John,

If you are having a hard time finding things like the control panel, than that
means that you haven't configured your XP computer to look like Windows 98.

I'm not sure if you knew this was an option or not, but for a while, Freedom
Scientific was recommending everyone using Jaws switched their XP environment,
such as the display, appearance and theme to Windows 98 or standard.

Even the files were supposed to be set to Windows Classic.

If you need help in switching the format, just let us know and we can give you
step by step instructions on how to accomplish this.

On the other hand, you can also go to the JFW Lite website, under the helpful
hints page, there is a file there on how to configure your computer to work
with Jaws on an XP machine.

I'm not sure if David has the same type of setting instructions on his tips
and tricks page, so he'll have to let you know about that.

While the text file on the JFW Lite site is a bit outdated, as I believe
Freedom Scientific no longer recommends everyone switch to the 98 look, you can
still use it's display settings to create your own 98 environment.

 Victor

John -

There are several places where Classic has to be set. One is in the Control
Panel in the Display settings and the other is in Control panel in the Task
Bar and Start Menu settings on the Start Menu page. Have you changed it in
both places?

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws 8 is saying selected

2007-01-02 Thread Walt Smith

Scott -

If I'm understanding your message; and I don't guarantee that I am; this
might be either a corrupted installation or your video drivers. Whenever I
hear about a problem like this, my first suggestion is to track down and
install the latest set of video drivers. If you find a set that's later than
those already on your computer, there's only one way to install them and
here are the steps. Don't even begin this process unless you feel confident
that you can successfully complete the installation process--get sighted
help if you're not 100% certain:

1. To locate drivers, go to the web site for the manufacturer of your video
card. If you don't know this, get a copy of Belarc Advisor and run it and it
will tell you. You may have to Google the manufacturer's name to locate
their web site.
2. Download the latest set of drivers for your model of video card. Chances
are that this will be in the form of a .exe file that you run in order to
install the drivers. Don't run it yet.
3. Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS dialog. Under Options, select Basics and
uncheck the Automatically Start JAWS item.
4. Go to the Start MenuProgramsJAWS whichever version you're running and
open the submenu. Arrow down once to Tools, then arrow right and locate the
Video Intercept Manager. Press ENTER.
5. When Intercept Manager opens, select Uninstall Video Intercept and press
ENTER. When this process completes, JAWS will not be running, so you must
turn on Narrator in order to have speech during installation of the new
drivers. Press Windows Key+U to turn on Narrator.
6. Now is the time to run the video driver installation program. Follow the
prompts as Narrator reads them to you. You will have to be patient when
using Narrator, since it doesn't have the capability of reading individual
lines, etc., that you'll be used to in JAWS.
7. After running the installation program, you should receive a message
indicating that the new drivers have been successfully installed. Shut down
and restart your computer and again, start Narrator.
8. Go to the Start MenuPrograms item for the same version of JAWS as in
step 4, above, Select Tools and then Video Intercept Manager. This time,
choose to install video intercept support.
9. The Video Intercept Manager should give you a message indicating that
this action was successful. Now, press INSERT+J to open the JAWS dialog,
select OptionsBasics and again check the Automatically Start JAWS item.

10. Now, restart your computer again. JAWS should come up talking.

Note: I don't know about other manufacturers, but if your video card is from
ATI, you will have to install Microsoft's Dot Net Framework before you can
install the drivers. ATI provides a link to the latest version of Dot Net
Framework on the same page where you download the drivers.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Help with bookmarks.

2007-01-02 Thread rich hamel

I tried using the book marks in Word and the instructions worked well.
If it wasn't mentioned, when closing out of Word, you must Save the changes
in order for the book marks to stay.

Thanks again. This really helped

I hadn't tried it in MS Word yet.
I guess it sounded a bit complicated just reading the directions compared
to

the temporary book mark in I.E.
The step by step instructions are extremely helpful and I copy them in to
my

JAWS helpful hints folder for future reference. (which is constantly
growing)

Again, Thanks so much!

Thanks a bunch.
This really saves time and effort in I.E.
I assume the place marker will stay in place indefinitely.

I wish the MS Word was as easy.

Rich,
I might add that when you do the control shift K to add a place marker
in
IE, you will have to tab one time to, add, and press enter. Then you
can

type in the name of the place marker or use the default title. And then
press enter.

I have JAWS 6.0 and XP.
My goal is to read a few pages of a document each day.
One book is in I.E. and the other book is a document I down loaded to My
Documents , in Word.
Each reading is over 125 pages.
My question is how can I mark where I leave off each day so that I can
go

to
that location the next time I open it?

Thank you for any help.

That's correct, but from the description, it sounds like that's what's
already selected. The question was how to know; when there are a bunch of
updates indicated as being ready to install; what they are. The way to do
this is to open the dialog in the System Tray and instead of choosing
Install, choose Advanced. After doing this, detailed descriptions of each
update are displayed and you can choose to install or not install.

[JAWS-Users] Re: we have our first spin off list launching today

2007-01-02 Thread Victor Gouveia

Hi Walt,

I have my eloquence set to intermediate and my punctuation set to some.

In point of fact, when I set my verbosity level to intermediate, it
automatically set my punctuation to some.

I didn't have to do anything with it.

I remember that because I realized that I had to change the punctuation just
after I did that and it had already been changed.

There is a possibility that I changed it before I changed the setting to
intermediate, but I don't think so.

In any case, thanks for pointing out that the punctuation has to be set to
some or one to get rid of those lines.
