OK, great. I knew you couldn't use a Braille display with the thumb
drive, but didn't know if there were other limitations to it or not. I
have Jaws on a thumb drive now, but haven't played around with it that
much.
Have you tried the portable version of Thunderbird? If so, how does it

The U3 drive I ordered is a 4 gig drive, so that should be plenty of

You are welcome. Yes, I believe they can be labeled. It is possible to
label them usingJFW for thumb drives. You can do anything you do with
desktop JFW (including installing scripts) with JFW for thumb drives.
The only thing JFW for thumb drives will not do is you will not be able
to use a braille display with JFW and JFW can not start automatically
when Windows starts. I have used Mozilla Firefox a little bit, and from
what i was able to see (I was only able to look at it for a few
minutes), it was accessible. All of your settings will be saved on the
thumb drive and it will take at least 66.7 MB of disk space to store
JAWS and all of your settings.

Hi Denny,
I have a U3 smart drive and JAWS will work on it. You have to
download the JAWS for Thumb drives and install it on the drive in the
Removable disk partition. When you insert the drive, an auto run dialog
will pop up and you may have to alt-tab back to it to get focus back to
it. When the dialog comes up, the first item will be JAWS using the
program provided on the device. Then, just press enter and JAWS wil then
start. As far as I can tell, the U3 launch pad is not that accessible;
you have to use the JAWS cursor to be able to use it. Even when you use
the JAWS cursor to click on the buttons (which are not always labeled as
buttons), you can only access some of the launch pad's functions. Other
than that, JAWS works well with a U3 smart drive.
HTH and have a great day!

[JAWS-Users] Re: JFW on a network: Was: Jaws reading log-in screens

2007-03-26 Thread Baracco, Andrew W
Hi Katrina,

This is one of many situations where there are tradeoffs. As for me, I
can have a spoken login, but because JAWS is not on the network, I can
only use it on this computer. If my office is being painted, floor
waxed, etc., I am computerless until I can get back in to my office.
But because JAWS is on your network, you can use any computer on your
network. That's really neat too. I am not sure why you can't access
JAWS help.

Thanks Andy. My Network Administrator confirmed what you appear to
already know. he said there is absolutely no way for anybody to set JFW
up so that it runs on start up. This greatly saddens me, but with a bit
of luck/patience I will learn to live with it. (smile) yes, you are
definitely right about my not being able to leave the system on all the
time. (smile) Oh well it's time to put that issue behind me and now
cross my fingers that they can figure out how to set things up so I can
access the help files in JFW. It's one of those things you take for
granted until you don't have it. (smile)

Hi Katrina,

I am running JAWS on a network computer, but JAWS is only installed on
my computer. I think that the fact that JAWS is running on the network
is the problem. If JAWS is running on the network, you won't be able to
access it until you have accessed the network. The only thing that you
can do other than installing JAWS locally on your machine would be to
just stay logged in at all times, which will, of course, bring forth the
wrath of your network admin.

Hmmm. I have recently started using a new computer on a new network at
work. I'm not sure what the network is, but the OS is Windows XP Pro.
The system is running a network version of JFW 7.1 and IE 6. Seems
every day I encounter another problem. The thing that bothers me the
most is that I can not set JFW up to run on start up. I'm not even
given that option under the JFW Basic Settings. Perhaps the Network
Administrator could access this setting...I'll definitely ask. However,
the Network Administrator tells me that FS reports there is no remedy to
the problem. Approximately 6-10 employees use JFW on this network, and
only two of them can set JFW to run on start up. My understanding is
this is because they have JFW running from a dongle (sp?) rather than
from the Jaws Network.

Another issue that bothers me is that I am not able to access Help in
the JFW application. The Network Administrator is supposed to be
contacting FS about this so hopefully they can figure it out. Any
thoughts or suggestions about using JFW on a network would be
appreciated.

I think someone who has admin access will have to check the load before
startup option under basics in the options menu. I think that creates
the service. When I was doing an internship, they said JFW wouldn't
speak the login prompt, but it actually did, and that was a Novell one
instead of the usual one that ships with Windows.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws reading log-in screens

2007-03-21 Thread Baracco, Andrew W
I think this happens because the keyboard is locked. Hitting
CONTROL-ALT-DELETE should get the speech back. At my work, the IT folks
have the computers programmed to lock after 20 minutes of inactivity.
If I am in the office when it happens, I hear JAWS read the screen that
pops up, and then it goes silent. Fortunately, this does not effect the
Braille display, so I can read that screen with the Braille display,
even though there is no need to, because all I have to remember is to
hit CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and enter my password, hit ENTER, and then
everything is bakc to normal for at least 20 more minutes. The
interesting thing though, and a bit off topic, is that for some reason,
this automatic lock thing is defeated by Window Eyes.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Why is Jaws slow to speak?

2007-03-15 Thread Baracco, Andrew W
There are many possible reasons. Is this a new problem? Did you change
anything recently, I. e. install or remove programs? did you add any
new hardware, like a second HD? You might try having fewer programs
load at startup. You can run MSCONFIG and uncheck unnecessary entried
in the startup tab. If you have several programs in the sys tray, try
disabling some. I once had this problem on an old computer, and doing a
disk defrag helped. If none of these things help, it may be a hardware
issue, like a dying power supply or HD. I doubt that JAWS has anything
to do with it.

Insert control numbpad slash.
Place the item where you want to drag it and then another insert control

Hi Patricia,

I have Outlook 2003, and this is what you need to do.

Hit ALT-T for Tools.
Hit O for Options.
This puts you in a properties sheet. The first tab that you will land
on his Preferences. Go to the Email Preferences button and hit the
spacebar. Go to the Advanced Email Options and hit the spacebar. Make
sure that the checkboxes for Automatic Name Checking, and
automatically complete addresses in the To, CC, and BCC fields are
checked. Tab over to OK and hit ENTER. Tab over to OK and hit ENTER.
Then she should be good to go.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Copying songs from a CD

2007-02-07 Thread Baracco, Andrew W

Hi Shirley,

Well, I use CDEX, but I would imagine that the procedure would be
similar in any such program.

When you place a CD in the drive, you are presented with a list view of
the tracks. You simply use regular Windows commands to select the
tracks uyou want to rip. If you want to rip the whole CD hit CONTROL-A
to select all of the songs, then hit the command to rip, which in CDEX
is F9. If you want to rip one track, just arrow down to it and hit the
command to rip. If you want to rip noncontiguous tracks, while holding
down the CONTROL key, hit the down arrow, and hit the space bar to
select only the tracks you want to rip, then after you have selected all
of the trakcs, hit the command to rip.

Good Morning!

I'm probably missing the obvious, but I'll take a deep breath and ask
what may be the most basic question of the year. I tried to copy
selected songs from one of my CDs last night, and could not seem to
understand the process.
This whole music adventure is new to me, so forgive my ignorance.

I have a vast collection of music, and my current project is to compile
only the songs I really enjoy hearing, and then burning them to CD.
Could someone please explain the procedure, and/or tell me what to read
to understand how to rip a song or two from a CD and place it into a
folder for future use?

I do have Roxio Easy CD Creator, and if Victor would be kind to this
damsel in distress, maybe he could give me an outline of the steps
necessary to burn a CD of MP3s. I've arranged transportation to purchase
blank CDs today, so as soon as I know what I'm doing, I'll rev up my PC
and start managing my music.

Thanks for any and all help in advance. It's so nice to have this list,
so self-taught computer users can ask questions and receive responses
from those of you that have all the answers, and are kind enough to
share what is stored within your knowledgeable brain cells. Too bad FS
doesn't offer a prescription for immediate stress relief for any and all
computer dilemmas.

Have a terrific day!

For now...Shirley

I will try to answer your questions to the best of my abilities and I
thank all of you for all of your help.

I'm using internet explorer 6.

The problem started Wednesday morning, the 24th, around 9 eastern.

I have been able to download things successfully in the past.

The last updates that were installed were about a month or so ago, but
I'm not quite sure what they wer. The only thing that I had noticed from
that installation was that when my outlook express compacts, I see dot
bak files files of all the folders that I have in my outlook program.
Such as deletd itemse.bak, recipes.bak, sent items.bak, games.bak, and
so on. I could still download after this installation though.

I download things from send space, just some things that people put up
there. Could I have gotten a virous from there?

The only things that i have installed in the past week was dvd audio
extracter, and winzip.

I have not reconfigured anything. I don't know how. heh heh heh.

I am using nod32, and the windows firewall which is on.

I have jaws 7.1 pro, and windows xp pro.

I can go to the internet and look around. For example, if I go to the
jim kitchens web site, I can look at all of the games he has, but when I
would try to download one of them, this is what use to happen.

Say for instence i enter on the siman game, I should come up with a
dialogue box that says do you want to open or save this, I would click
on save.
Then I would come up with a box that wants to know where you want the
file to be saved to. At that point I would pick the place and enter on
the download button and the game would be downloaded.

Now, this is what's happening.
I go to kitchens site, and enter on a game that I want to download.

A dialogue box comes up that says, File download dialogue, getting file
information. It acts as though I've already selected the save option and
told it where to put the game, but I do not get that choice. Then if i
let it set there for almost a minute I get a message that says, internet
explorer can not open this file or the site can not be found.

I would appreciate any suggestions. I will gladly give someone my phone
number if they would be willing to call me, or I would call them.
Thanks.

 Hi Terry,
Your description of the problem is rather vague.
Can you give us some more information, that might help us better
 troubleshoot the problem?
 Try answering these questions:
 1. What internet browser are you using?
 2. When did this problem begin?
 3. Were you able to download from the internet before?
 4. Have you recently installed any Windows updates?
 5. Have you Have you recently re-configured, or installed internet
 security software?
 6. Are you getting any type of error messages?
 7. Do you have a firewall installed and running?
If you can give us some answers to these questions, we'll have more

Something about your system has had to change to cause this problem.

[JAWS-Users] Closing MS Outlook

2007-01-23 Thread Baracco, Andrew W

I am using a Dell Optiplex GX620 PC with 1 GB RAM running XP PRO on a
LAN. I am using MS OFFICE 2003. I am using JFW 8.0. When I attempt to
close MS Outlook, either by hitting ALT-F4 or through the file menu.
The program disappears from the screen, but it still running in the
background. When I go into Windows Task Manager, Outlook is not listed
among the running applications, but is listed among the running
processes. I need to hit the end task button to get it to close
completely. Interestingly, when using Window Eyes, Outlook closes
normally after hitting ALT-F4. I wonder what it is about JAWS that
prevents Outlook from closing normally.

I have the same problem with the number pad I purchased for use with
this ThinkPad using XP Pro using Jaws versions 5 through 7. I think it
may be something to do with the codes the number pad transmits. The
other issue I had was that it kept repeating numlock on with each
press.

Finally I just bit the bullet and got comfortable with the notebook
keyboard.

Fortunately this one has the six pak at the top right corner easy to
access and more or less the inverted 'T' at the bottom right corner.
Working with the various cursors is less convenient and any amount of
entry is slow so, for some specific things I still use it but the Say
Word and Spell Word just don't work with the number pad.

If this is a necessary feature I suggest you find a shop with several
number pads to choose from and bring your computer along and
methodically test each until you find one which does as you need.

Good luck!

Hi Victor,
making sure the numlock was off, was the first thing I tried.
However, your suggestion to reboot with the numpad plugged in, seem to
do the trick. I am now able to use the cursor keys and the Jaws key okay
now. However, I notice that I cannot do a read current word, or read
current character. I am however, able to do previous word and next word,
along with prior and next character. Current line etc is also okay.
Obviously, I can cope with this, but it would be nice to know why it
does this and how to fix it? Do you have any ideas? With David's
instructions, I checked that desktop layout was selected. As I thought,
it already was. I am actually using an Acer notebook, not a Toshiba
smile. I bought it in 2001 and have never really used it. However, now
I need to use it for my work. This brings up another question I have. At
work, we do intake work(I am a counselor and a conflict mediator). The
forms I need to fill in on the computer is in MS word format. At the
moment I am going to be entering the work onto my laptop(hence the
numpad). I have the form templates to try Jaws with. I find on my
desktop running Windows XP and Jaws 7.0, that I have trouble navigating
the forms. At work, I can tab through and enter the text in the required
fields. I would however, need to keep track of all the tabbing to do and
sometimes there is a lot. Do you or anyone else, know why I am having
trouble with these forms at home? If I can't work it on my desktop(which
is a more up-to-date system), I am not sure how I will go doing it on my
laptop, which is using Windows ME and a very older version of Jaws. I do
however, intend to upgrade Jaws to 7.0 like is on my desktop.
I hope you or someone else can help me.
I need to work this out before Friday
thanks a lot
Jason

Hi Jason,

Try finding out if the num pad has a num lock key.

I have the same thing, an external num pad via USB port,

and I get the same thing.

In fact, if I didn't know any better, I'd swear that you

were using a Toshiba laptop as well.

Anyway, first and foremost, I would make sure that you

reboot the computer with the num pad connected to it.

Once it's connected and rebooted, see if it does the

same thing.

If it does, press the num lock key at the top left hand

corner of the num pad.

This should be where the num lock key is on the num pad.

Anyway, try that and see if it works for you.

I have had the Adobe 8 version since it first came out and like its
previous version it comes with its own accessible format for screen
readers and it is free.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Reader 8 and JAWS

Hi All,

I understand that a new threat has been associated with Adobe
Acrobat 7 and that a couple of the computer newsletters I get have
suggested that folks run, not walk to get Adobe Reader 8 which seems to
be the new name of our old friend Acrobat and I was wondering how
accessible it is with JAWS 6.2 and up? I've checked posts on all the
JAWS lists I'm on and haven't seen any comments from brave folks who
have tried it. It sounds like the new version is really big and has
been tested with the Beta version of Vista, and one newsletter said
folks with Win 98 are out of luck and can't run the new offering on
their machines.

I'll check the FS site after more caffeine and a break, but was
hoping to take care of this now if the new version works well for us.

Thanks,

Margaret
