[JAWS-Users] Samantech virus checker

2007-10-17 Thread Larry Stansifer
Hi Folks,

My new computer came with Semantic's virus checker installed. Does Jaws
play well with this program?
I am not particularly pleased with the overall performance of this machine
and I am hoping that by removing a couple of freebys my supplier insisted
upon installing will help.
I have already been through all of the optimizing Jaws for Windows
recommendations.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Semantic virus checker

2007-10-17 Thread Crabb, Nolan
Larry, I don't want to lead you too far afield here, but if it were my
new computer, I'd blow off that Symantec product in style and with much
haste. If it's the latest incarnation of the product, chances are high
that it won't work as well with JAWS as say the current version of NOD32
or the free AVG. When I used Norton AV 2006, my machine was measurably
slower. I suspect if you replace that Symantec AV product with
something else, you won't miss the slow-downs the Symantec product can
cause.

Regards,

Nolan

Well that's fine since it's the name of the program just like crap cleaner
is, but I am sure you see where I am going here. Thanks I might grab that
program myself. How accessible is it, and would I be allowed to put it up on

Hi Denny,
Can this program also be used if the computer isn't new? There is still
stuff on my computer from when I bought it that I'm sure that I don't need.
How does this program determine what programs are not needed on a computer?
Take care,

One thing you can look for and pull off is viewpoint media. its
coming in a lot of bundle packs and is nothing but crap spyware. You
will notice a big improvement removing that crap.

[JAWS-Users] I Can Make Progress, But JAWS Won't Admit It

2007-10-17 Thread Crabb, Nolan
Hi, Everyone,

Subject line's a little silly here, but it makes the point. I have my
verbosity settings set to advanced and the progress announcements set to
speak, but whenever I'm downloading a file from the Internet, JAWS won't
give me any progress announcements. Is it because of the advance
verbosity settings? Or do I need to do something else in terms of the
configuration. I'm sure this is an embarrassingly simple fix I've jjust
forgotten.

Regards,

Nolan

Re: [JAWS-Users] Samantech virus checker

2007-10-17 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. Well, from what I've been able to tell, these antispyware
programs have a database that they check through and if the same
program shows up on your computer, it's marked as spyware and then
gives you the opportunity to remove it after the scan.

How does this program determine what programs are not needed on a computer?
 Take care,

[JAWS-Users] JAWS public Beta build coming later this afternoon

2007-10-17 Thread David A Ferrin
HTML Composition Support
JAWS 9.0 introduces new support for editing in HTML composition environments,
such as online text editors, Outlook Express, and Outlook 2003 (Outlook 2007
uses Microsoft Word), editing in Forms mode (input type=text, textarea,
elements with contenteditable=TRUE etc), and editing in Adobe Flash edit fields.

This new support provides 100 percent accuracy when reading text; the ability
to use sound schemes to differentiate font, attribute, and color; the ability
to automatically switch languages when the language of the text is correctly
marked up; and the ability to hear information when the text is marked up as a
heading, link, list, table, and so on. For example, when composing a new HTML
message in Outlook Express or Outlook 2003, you can now select text and format
it as a heading (level 1 through 6), and JAWS will announce that this text is a
heading when reading back the composed message. When using online editors, such
as the sample at http://www.rnib.org.uk/edtest/editor.htm, if you go into Forms
mode in the editable area, you can now use the ARROW keys to enter the table
and use table navigation keystrokes to navigate the table and hear row or
column changes and row or column headings. (Note that you will have to press
the RIGHT ARROW once and then the DOWN ARROW to navigate past the link in this
editor.) You can also hear where headings are and the text which belongs to a
bulleted or auto numbered list.

Finally, JAWS now supports Adobe Flash edit fields. However, you need the
upcoming Adobe Flash Player update, which can be downloaded from the Adobe
Flash Player enhancement that appears later on this page. With the current
release, you can navigate through existing edit field text, but, if you enter
new text, you must move away from the edit field and then return to the field
to navigate through the new text.

Improved Support For Gmail
Screen reader users currently get a message on the Gmail page that says, If
you are using a screen reader, you may wish to switch to basic HTML for a
better experience. While you will still receive this message when running JAWS
9.0, it is no longer necessary to follow those instructions as JAWS works with
the standard Gmail interface, which offers many enhancements over their basic
HTML page.

In JAWS versions prior to 9.0, it was necessary to switch Gmail to its basic
HTML interface or use the JAWS cursor to click the objects on the page that
were not standard links. These include Inbox, Sent, Compose Mail, Trash, Create
a Filter, and so on. With our new support for Gmail, these items show up in the
links list. You can also use the ARROW keys to move to these items and either
press ENTER to activate them or select the items with the routing buttons on
your braille display.

Additionally, prior to JAWS 9.0, you had no way to see some editing attributes
in the message edit window. For example, you had no way to see if text was a
heading or even if it was a table when in Forms mode. With our new support for
Web-based RichEdit controls, you can add attributes to your messages such as
bold, italic, and underline by using standard JAWS commands in this editor.
Commands for similar Web-based editors may be different. At this time JAWS does
not speak the status of these controls when they are activated, but you can use
the command to get font information to see the attributes. It is also possible
to see formatting such as list items, both bulleted and numbered lists, heading
and level, and table information, even in Forms mode with both speech and
braille.

Update Enhancements Included as of Build 9.0.396 (17 October 2007)
Thanks to all the public beta testers who identified issues in our initial
release and reported them so well using the Beta Report form on this page. As a
result, many of the items were resolved and have been included in this second
update on October 17th. Others are still under investigation, and we will be
looking forward to posting more updates soon.

a.. Resolved the following issues when using a rich text editor for Web
development: Graphics are now recognized along with meaningful alt text when
available; the number of items in a list are now announced by JAWS; and
standard table navigation keystrokes now work correctly. Refer to the HTML
feature described earlier on this page.
b.. JAWS now works with the standard Gmail interface. Refer to the Gmail
feature described earlier on this page.
c.. You can now read HTML tables one row at a time with speech or braille
when the Document Presentation option is set to Screen Layout (INSERT+V, D,
SPACEBAR). Previously, there was an issue recognizing the HTML br tag in
tables when this option was configured for Screen Layout.
d.. When using SHIFT+UP ARROW or SHIFT+DOWN ARROW to select multiple e-mail
messages in Microsoft Outlook Express, JAWS now reads across all columns that
are highlighted. For example, JAWS

[JAWS-Users] Jaws Vista Business

2007-10-17 Thread Waqas Hussain
Greetings all,

My name is Waqas Hussain and I am probably the newest member on this list.

Apologies if this question has already been discussed on this forum.
Basically, I am in the process of replacing my PC and laptop and am
considering getting machines build on a Windows Vista Business platform. I
have been advised by the Jaws dealer here in the UK that Jaws 8 is fully
compatible with Windows Vista Business and that Jaws 9 would be released in
a couple of weeks time which I intend to upgrade from my current Jaws 7.1
version.

I'd much appreciate if someone may like to share there experience with Jaws
8 and Vista business.

Regards

Waqas

There is also a program called, decrapifier that works well with Jaws.
Sorry about the language David, but that is what the program is called.
I use it on every new computer I set up and it will remove any or all
programs that come with a new computer that isn't necessary.

One more question if you don't mind, would Office 2003 be compatible
with Vista Business and Jaws 9?

Waqas,
I think JAWs 8.0.2173 is great Vista (all flavors). JAWS 9 is even
better.
Some might call me a bit bias however so I'll let others jump in.

Greetings all,

My name is Waqas Hussain and I am probably the newest member on this
list.

Apologies if this question has already been discussed on this forum.
Basically, I am in the process of replacing my PC and laptop and am
considering getting machines build on a Windows Vista Business platform.
I have been advised by the Jaws dealer here in the UK that Jaws 8 is
fully compatible with Windows Vista Business and that Jaws 9 would be
released in a couple of weeks time which I intend to upgrade from my
current Jaws 7.1 version.

I'd much appreciate if someone may like to share there experience with
Jaws
8 and Vista business.

Regards

Waqas

Lois,
We are very pleased with the results so far and the feedback from users has
been great. Looking forward to getting the next update posted as soon as
possible and I just got word from the developers that they have tracked down
the issue. I'm very confident that we are on track to get something posted
Thursday or Friday this week to update the Beta.

All,

We were on schedule to post the third update today for JAWS 9.
Unfortunately, something did not clear testing and it has gone back to
the developers. We are optimistic that a fix for the issue that held it
is coming soon and the post will not be delayed long.

Hi there,
Welcome to the list.
For me, as a Vista user, I find it to be

experiment with Vista Business for few hours
and it works just like XP. If you want to

Greetings all,

My name is Waqas Hussain and I am probably
the newest member on this list.

Apologies if this question has already been
discussed on this forum.
Basically, I am in the process of replacing
my PC and laptop and am
considering getting machines build on a
Windows Vista Business platform. I
have been advised by the Jaws dealer here in
the UK that Jaws 8 is fully
compatible with Windows Vista Business and
that Jaws 9 would be released in
a couple of weeks time which I intend to
upgrade from my current Jaws 7.1
version.

I'd much appreciate if someone may like to
share there experience with Jaws
8 and Vista business.

Regards
