[JAWS-Users] a problem with the mirror driver on Vista

2007-10-18 Thread Scott Berry
Hi Eric and all,

I notice when I go in to the Uak on Win Vista that it seems that the
mirror driver does not want to function correctly. I have not had a
chance to check it since the new version. But what seems to happen is
Jaws says: "The mirror driver is not functioning correctly and then I
hit okay. It then takes me in to the Uak and allows me to hit
continue." Also I am new to Vista.

Hi all.
How or where does one determine the version number of scripts you have
installed for an application? I know where to find the scripts but not how
to determine the version of such scripts, i.e. the Skype scripts.

Thanks for any help.

After opening the email, go to the files menu and scroll down until you
reach save attachments. Hit enter. Then type in the drive and folder where
you want the attachment saved, and the name you want the file to have.

This is the only way I know how to do it in JAWS 8. In this regard, JAWS 8
is a step back from JAWS 7. In JAWS 7, you could hit insert A on the
attachment and open or save the attachment. You cannot do that in JAWS 8.

I would like to run my jaws speech through one set of speakers.
Then hopefully have everything else run through the other set.
I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of external sound card to purchase.
Thanks in advance

Re: [JAWS-Users] Delay in getting the update for JAWS 9 posted today

2007-10-18 Thread Eric Damery
Larry,
I am targeting a release in the middle of November, before the Holiday season
really kicks off. That date will require us to meet several more milestones but
then entire team of Private testers, internal testers, and developers are very
focused and I'm pleased with the progress so far.

Of course feedback during the public beta cycle is the real test. We are
pleased that thousands of users around the world are now running JAWS 9 at this
point. We have not had any real surprises at this point and I'm very optomistic
that we will hit our dates our SMA holders will be very pleased with the
shipments arriving just after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Regards,
Eric

2007-10-18 Thread Rick Harmon
Yes, I agree. Let them get all the issues fixed instead of prematurely
releasing the product. There is no hurries. Jaws 9 appears to be doing
much better in 8 in quite a few ways. Some bugs still, so lets keep
reporting and let them keep working and that way they can release a quality
product to all of us.

Rick

Or, if one doesn't have 9.0 one would, as with a new version of JAWS,
download (not update) and then install the whole present JAWS9 beta version.

You must have the 9.0 beta installed to get the new update for this

Hi
I just did a check for new updates with my JAWS 8.2 and did not
find any updates. Is this because JAWS 9 is a beta version?

Leonard,
Not sure what could be going on for you. If you have builds 348 or 353
installed, and check for updates on Vista or XP, it should find it and
install as expected. If it does not, this list might not be the place to
sort it out and to be honest, my suggest would be to download the full
build of 9.0.399 from web page that describes the new beta release and
just install over top of what you have now. Windows Installers can get
into a state which messes up the auto update process and it is generally
more work to figure out why then it is really worth.
Regards,
Eric

Hi
I just did a check for new updates with my JAWS 8.2 and did not find
any updates. Is this because JAWS 9 is a beta version?

God bless,

All,
Below are the details of the changes between build 353 and 399. Thanks
again to all the reports. We are making great progress and the details
reports being filed is making a big difference.

HTML Composition Support

JAWS 9.0 introduces new support for editing in HTML composition
environments, such as online text editors, Outlook Express, and Outlook
2003 (Outlook 2007 uses Microsoft Word), editing in Forms mode (input
type=text, textarea, elements with contenteditable=TRUE etc), and
editing in Adobe Flash edit fields.

This new support provides 100 percent accuracy when reading text; the
ability to use sound schemes to differentiate font, attribute, and
color; the ability to automatically switch languages when the language
of the text is correctly marked up; and the ability to hear information
when the text is marked up as a heading, link, list, table, and so on.
For example, when composing a new HTML message in Outlook Express or
Outlook 2003, you can now select text and format it as a heading (level
1 through 6), and JAWS will announce that this text is a heading when
reading back the composed message. When using online editors, such as
the sample at http://www.rnib.org.uk/edtest/editor.htm, if you go into
Forms mode in the editable area, you can now use the ARROW keys to enter
the table and use table navigation keystrokes to navigate the table and
hear row or column changes and row or column headings. (Note that you
will have to press the RIGHT ARROW once and then the DOWN ARROW to
navigate past the link in this editor.) You can also hear where headings
are and the text which belongs to a bulleted or auto numbered list.

Gmail Support Improvements

Screen reader users currently get a message on the Gmail page that says,
"If you are using a screen reader, you may wish to switch to basic HTML
for a better experience." While you will still receive this message when
running JAWS 9.0, it is no longer necessary to follow those instructions
as JAWS works with the standard Gmail interface, which offers many
enhancements over their basic HTML page.

In JAWS versions prior to 9.0, it was necessary to switch Gmail to its
basic HTML interface or use the JAWS cursor to click the objects on the
page that were not standard links. These include Inbox, Sent, Compose
Mail, Trash, Create a Filter, and so on. With our new support for Gmail,
these items show up in the links list. You can also use the ARROW keys
to move to these items and either press ENTER to activate them or select
the items with the routing buttons on your braille display.

Additionally, prior to JAWS 9.0, you had no way to see some editing
attributes in the message edit window. For example, you had no way to
see if text was a heading or even if it was a table when in Forms mode.
With our new support for Web-based rich edit controls, you can add
attributes to your messages such as bold, italic, and underline by using
standard JAWS commands in this editor. Commands for similar Web-based
editors may be different. At this time JAWS does not speak the status of
these controls when they are activated, but you can use the command to
get font information to see the attributes. It is also possible to see
formatting such as list items, both bulleted and numbered lists, heading
and level, and table information, even in Forms mode with both speech
and braille.

type=text, textarea, elements with contenteditable=TRUE etc), and
editing in Adobe Flash edit fields.

Internet Explorer New HTML Frame Update Notification

JAWS can now notify you when an HTML frame updates in Internet Explorer.
The new Frame Update Notification option lets you configure the way JAWS
handles HTML frame notification on various Web pages. It is located in
both the Adjust JAWS Options dialog box (INSERT+V) and the Personalized
Settings dialog box (INSERT+SHIFT+V) while in Internet Explorer.

Press the SPACEBAR to toggle to one of the following settings for the
Frame Update Notification option:

* Off: When off, you are not notified of any frame updates.
* Speak Frame Name: JAWS speaks the name of the most recently
updated frame. This is the default setting.
* Move To Frame: JAWS moves the cursor to the beginning of the
most recently updated frame. JAWS also remembers your cursor location
before the move; you can move back to your original location by pressing

[JAWS-Users] New Update to JAWS Beta has been release. Build is now 9.0.399

HTML Composition Support

JAWS 9.0 introduces new support for editing in HTML composition
environments, such as online text editors, Outlook Express, and Outlook
2003 (Outlook 2007 uses Microsoft Word), editing in Forms mode (input
type=text, textarea, elements with contenteditable=TRUE etc), and
editing in Adobe Flash edit fields.

This new support provides 100 percent accuracy when reading text; the
ability to use sound schemes to differentiate font, attribute, and
color; the ability to automatically switch languages when the language
of the text is correctly marked up; and the ability to hear information
when the text is marked up as a heading, link, list, table, and so on.

when the frame updates and you have set the Frame Update Notification to

Changes made using the Adjust JAWS Options tree view (INSERT+V) apply
the setting for all Web pages. While this may be appropriate for the
current Web page you are viewing, it may not apply to other Web pages.
In that case, use the Personalized Setting dialog box (INSERT+SHIFT+V)
to set the option for an individual Web page.

Yes all files can be downloaded from the site. If you click on a file and
it only opens to play, then instead right click on the file and arrow down
to save as and press enter. This will bring up a dialog to allow you to
save the file. If WMP is your default player then when clicking on an audio
file the default action is for WMP to play it.

[JAWS-Users] is livewire accessible with Jaws

2007-10-18 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
a friend of mine uses a thing called livewire to download music from the net
onto her MP3 player. Does anyone know if it is accessible to use with Jaws? I
think it is a website on which you use their software to download the music,
but I am not sure. I heard about this a long time ago, but didn't get around to
trying it out. I had a quick look using google, and there seems to be a lot
about it. I would be interested to hear from anyone who is using it with Jaws.
Thanks Jason

We are working on this. The problem is related to trying to process these
Layout Tables in the Word Document Object Model, which is involved when
using Outlook 2007. The same messages are not an issue in Outlook 2003 or
the browser as you mentioned.

It is a difficult problem to over come but we will solve it.

Eric,
Unless I missed your response, You never got back to me about the difficulty
I and others on this list are having with Jaws 8 & 9 are having reading some
e-mails having a table format. In particular, I find that both versions of
Jaws read the row and column numbering and some "boilerplate" about putting
the sender's e-mail address in my contact list but nothing else. Also, Jaws
9 sometimes skips a number of rows. I sent you a few e-mails I was having
difficulty reading. Any solution? One member of this list suggested I read
the e-mail through my browser on the e-mail's site of origin which does work
but it is time-consuming and we shouldn't have to do that. Thanks. Chris

Welcome to the list.
For me, as a Vista user, I find it to be impressive with JAWS 8 and 9. I
mainly use Vista Ultimate on my laptop but I sure did experiment with Vista
Business for few hours and it works just like XP. If you want to know more

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Jaws 9

Hi Folks, I forgot to ask in my last message...

With all this talk of Jaws 9 coming out, Since my friend bought his copy of
Jaws literally the other day, will Jaws 9 be an update, or an upgrade he'll
have to pay for?

I believe I saw the answer to this question when this topic first came out,
about a week ago, but can't remember what was said about it.

Can anyone refresh my memory?

Thanks in advance.
