Subject: [JAWS-Users] Word 2000 and save command

Those of you using MS Word 2000, try the following and let me know what
 happens:

 1. open a new document;
 2. type the word test;
 3. go to file and then choose save;
 4. you should hear JAWS say the word test as the file name;
 5. hit the end key so text in the file name box is not highlighted. it
 puts
 the cursor at the end of the text;
 6. try cursoring back through the text and alter the name by deleting a
 character or inserting something;
 7. my guess is you will not hear any of the text you are cursoring
 through
but only the new characters as you type them in. This makes editing the
name of a file or checking for typos impossible. I have notified Freedom
Scientific of this and hopefully they can fix this bug. Insert tab will
read the name but editing is a guess and tough.
Let me know your results. I have not found this issue in any other
 application.
 thanks
 Al

Re: [JAWS-Users] Word 2000 and save command

2007-11-12 Thread Eric Damery
Unfortunately, we were unable to get this one solved in the JAWS 9
version at this point. It is not a scripting issue unfortunately. We
were able to solve an issue or two for Word 2000, but not this one. It
can be read with the JAWS cursor.
Regards,
Eric

Re: [JAWS-Users] Why is Jaws saying collapsed in Outlook Express

2007-11-12 Thread Francis E. Khan
Here's how you stop Jaws from saying Collapsed. Press alt-view to get to the
view menu, then hit the right cursor once where you will hear show all
messages. Press the up arrow once and you will hear group message
conversations which will probably be checked. Press enter to uncheck and you
are good to go.

One of the members of this list helped me last week to get rid of that annoying
message and I am passing it on.

 Hello everyone,

[JAWS-Users] text in Ms word and outlook express gets lost

2007-11-12 Thread leonard morris
I am using jaws 8 and for several months I noticed that occasionally in MS word
documents or while sending or replying to an email using outlook express the
text on the screen gets lost. I can only hear jaws say blank blank blank as I
arrow up and down. Sometimes if I unload and load jaws the text comes back.
However, I often must switch to an alternative screen reader to continue
reading/writing the text. This strange behavior has not happen yet with the
alternate screen readers I have on my computer. Any ideas how to fix this
issue? Thanks.

2007-11-12 Thread Patti
Hey Mark,
Have you found when you send and receive message that jaws doesn't read
your message right away?
I downloaded Yahoo 8.00508 this morning, and that is what mine does. I
downloaded the scripts that are on David's list, but no luck for me.
I'm running Jaws 8, IE 7, and windows XP.

Re: [JAWS-Users] text in Ms word and outlook express gets lost

2007-11-12 Thread Darrin Porter
I experience the same problem in MS Word as well. I use GroupWise, so
don't know about OE.

Also, The menu/tool bars seem to get in the way, obscuring text. I
didn't think that you could move the insertion point up into the tool
bar area, but it appears that you can. This is even more annoying.
Sometimes, I have to insert a bunch of blank lines in the document to
scroll the obscured text out from under the menu / tool bars.

I am using jaws 8 and for several months I noticed that occasionally in
MS word documents or while sending or replying to an email using outlook
express the text on the screen gets lost. I can only hear jaws say blank
blank blank as I arrow up and down. Sometimes if I unload and load jaws
the text comes back. However, I often must switch to an alternative
screen reader to continue reading/writing the text. This strange
behavior has not happen yet with the alternate screen readers I have on
my computer. Any ideas how to fix this issue? Thanks.

Unfortunately, we were unable to get this one solved in the JAWS 9
version at this point. It is not a scripting issue unfortunately. We
were able to solve an issue or two for Word 2000, but not this one. It
can be read with the JAWS cursor.

Those of you using MS Word 2000, try the following and let me know
 what
 happens:

 1. open a new document;
 2. type the word test;
 3. go to file and then choose save;
 4. you should hear JAWS say the word test as the file name;
 5. hit the end key so text in the file name box is not highlighted.
 it
 puts
 the cursor at the end of the text;
 6. try cursoring back through the text and alter the name by deleting
 a
 character or inserting something;
 7. my guess is you will not hear any of the text you are cursoring
 through
but only the new characters as you type them in. This makes editing
 the

 Freedom

read the name but editing is a guess and tough.
Let me know your results. I have not found this issue in any other

I frequently have problems with JAWS not speaking portions of a word or

e-mail in Outlook. I think it is a video conflict with JAWS and the
computer. Here is what I do when I encounter these problems. I start

I have a theory that the mouse is some how interfering with the info JAWS

 Of

less chance that it will interfere with what I am doing.

Use Insert+ESC to refresh the screen.

Insert+F4 to unload JAWS, and then Control+Alt+J to reload it. Before
doing this, make sure the version of JAWS that you are using has the
 Control+Alt+J short cut set up.

Close the document that you are working on and then re-open it.

Exit out of the program and then reload it.

If all of these tricks fail, give up on it for now and come back later,
 after a system reboot.

Font size can also effect how JAWS reads. I have found that Arial 12

Also check your view. I prefer to use Print Layout in MS-Word in either

This is not the recommended view from FS. I do this because at work we

[JAWS-Users] Reading the day of the week

2007-11-12 Thread David Griffith
Dear List

I have a long standing frustration with Jaws and Outlook in that whilst Jaws
will read happily dates in a calendar it will not read the days of the week
printed on screen above a outlook calendar date.

So for example I received an email today requesting my availability on 11th
February 2008. At present the only way to get Outlook to tell me what day
this is to create an actual appointment on that date whereupon I discover
this is a Monday. This is a bit long winded and time consuming if you are
trying to find a particular day in a month.

I raised this problem on another list last year but nobody could come up
with a solution. As far as I can see FS have still not resolved this problem
in Jaws 9 though if they have this would definitely make me buy it.

It occurs to me that a possible solution would be to create a simple Excel
spreadsheet where the *weekday* function should theoretically return the day
for any given date. My attempts to do this have failed spectacularly though
and the Excel help seem unnecessarily obscure on this function. Are there
any Excel wizards out there who can do this? What I was trying to do was
nominate a cell like a1 to type in a date and use weekday to reference to
that cell and give me the day of the week.

Using Office 2003
XP Pro
Jaws 8

You have me puzzled.
Let's say that you are going to start a new message.
You should start with the to field the screen,if you tab twice what do you
see or hear?
it should be the bcc field
I'm not sure if you rebooted your computer or not.
if not then try rebooting , to see what happens.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] text in Ms word and outlook express gets lost

I am using jaws 8 and for several months I noticed that occasionally in MS
word documents or while sending or replying to an email using outlook
express the text on the screen gets lost. I can only hear jaws say blank
blank blank as I arrow up and down. Sometimes if I unload and load jaws
 the
text comes back. However, I often must switch to an alternative screen
reader to continue reading/writing the text. This strange behavior has
 not
happen yet with the alternate screen readers I have on my computer. Any
ideas how to fix this issue? Thanks.

Any shortcut key you have assigned to start up the version of JAWS you are
using should do, so it doesn't have to be ctrl-alt-j.

I frequently have problems with JAWS not speaking portions of a word or
line, entire lines, and multiple lines when in MS-Word and composing an
e-mail in Outlook. I think it is a video conflict with JAWS and the
computer. Here is what I do when I encounter these problems. I start with
the first item on the below list, and if that does not fix the problem I
move on down the list.

I have a theory that the mouse is some how interfering with the info JAWS is
trying to retrieve to read. So I repeatedly move the mouse in a upward or
downward direction to move it off of the area where I am trying to work. Of
course I haven't an idea where the mouse is moving to, but my goal is to
move it to the top or bottom of the screen. My thought is that there is
less chance that it will interfere with what I am doing.

Use Insert+ESC to refresh the screen.

Select the word, phrase, line, paragraph that you are having trouble reading
Then use Insert+ESC to try refreshing the screen.

Use Alt+Tab to move away from the program and then move back to the program.

I have found that Arial 12 works
well.

Also check your view. I prefer to use Print Layout in MS-Word in either
Full-page or Page width view.
This is not the recommended view from FS. I do this because at work we deal
with a lot of text formatting and my co-workers find Normal layout to be a
problem.

HTH,
Annette

Remember, the insert key is also used as the JAWS key so it's used to
control JAWS specific functionalities. General Windows functionalities will

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Reading the day of the week

XP Pro
Jaws 8

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Reading the day of the week

XP Pro
Jaws 8

2007-11-12 Thread David Ferrin
Interestingly enough I didn't realize this before. The thing is I so rarely
use word to save documents myself, but instead to help me reformat text for
future conversion to HTML using notepad. Eric did state that they weren't
able to get this resolved for the current release I see. Still it is known
to him and there for should be on the table for updates. He said it isn't a
scripting issue I also see.

check mark. Hope that helps, and sorry for the confusion.

 Hi Lisa,
It is saying that because it is set to collapse the messages that there
 are more than
one of, with the same subject line. I have been meaning to ask someone
 how
 to get my
Windows Mail to do that on a new computer with Vista. So if anyone can
 help Lisa
figure out how to make her OE stop saying collapse not collapse her
 messages of the
same subject, can you please tell me how to set my email up to expand
 collapse
 messages?

Now how come I feel like I just said a bunch of nonsense. LOL

 Thanks,

 Hello everyone,
When I'm in my Outlook Express inbox arrowing through some of my unread
 messages jaws
will say collapsed on some of them. It doesn't say this on all of them
 just a few of
them. How can I get jaws to stop saying collapsed? I went to the jaws
 users web
site, and I looked on the tips and tricks page and I looked through the
 Outlook
Express stuff, but I didn't see anything pertaining to this particular
 problem. Your
help fixing this problem will be most appreciated!
 Take care,

 You have me puzzled.
Let's say that you are going to start a new message.
You should start with the to field the screen,if you tab twice what do you
 see or hear?
it should be the bcc field
I'm not sure if you rebooted your computer or not.
if not then try rebooting , to see what happens.

 Hey Mark,
When you have Yahoo open, press
 insert+ ctrl+ V.
That will tell you the version you are running, and that works for
 all
 of
the things you want to check.

 Hey Mark,
When you have Yahoo open, press
 insert+ ctrl+ V.
That will tell you the version you are running, and that works for
 all
 of
the things you want to check.

Have you found when you send and receive message that jaws doesn't

I downloaded Yahoo 8.00508 this morning, and that is what mine does. I
downloaded the scripts that are on David's list, but no luck for me.
I'm running Jaws 8, IE 7, and windows XP.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading the day of the week

2007-11-12 Thread Griffiths, Steve
David,

Here are three suggestions:

1. Reading the day is upset by having the TaskPad on the screen, so make
sure it is turned off - it's in the View menu.

2. On some PCs, the following change to a Windows setting allows JAWS to
read the day.

Open the Start Menu, go into the Settings submenu and choose Control
Panel.

Press R to jump to Regional and Language Options, and press Enter to
open a dialogue.

Tab to a Standard and formats Customize button and press Enter to open
a further dialogue box.

Control + Tab to the Date page, and then Tab to the Long date format and
change it to: , dd

Both the number of characters and their case are important in the
format, so make sure it's right!

Once you have typed this in, you can Tab to the OK button and press it,
then Tab to another OK button and press it, and then close the Control
Panel. You might need to stop and start Outlook before the change takes
effect. Now when you move from day to day with LeftArrow and RightArrow,
JAWS should give you the day name as well as the date.

Beware that this change can cause JAWS' behaviour in reading out day and
date information to deteriorate even further, so you may have to undo
the setting change to get it back.

3. Remember that when you press Control + G, it gives the first three
letters of the day along with the date of the current day. So for your
example, you could go to the calendar, press Control + G and type in
11/2/08 Enter to jump to the day you're interested in, then press
Control + G again to get the day information and press Escape to get rid
of the dialogue once you have it.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Reading the day of the week

Dear List

I have a long standing frustration with Jaws and Outlook in that whilst
Jaws
will read happily dates in a calendar it will not read the days of the
week
printed on screen above a outlook calendar date.

So for example I received an email today requesting my availability on
11th
February 2008. At present the only way to get Outlook to tell me what
day
this is to create an actual appointment on that date whereupon I
discover
this is a Monday. This is a bit long winded and time consuming if you
are
trying to find a particular day in a month.

I raised this problem on another list last year but nobody could come up
with a solution. As far as I can see FS have still not resolved this
problem
in Jaws 9 though if they have this would definitely make me buy it.

It occurs to me that a possible solution would be to create a simple
Excel
spreadsheet where the *weekday* function should theoretically return the
day
for any given date. My attempts to do this have failed spectacularly
though
and the Excel help seem unnecessarily obscure on this function. Are
there
any Excel wizards out there who can do this? What I was trying to do was
nominate a cell like a1 to type in a date and use weekday to reference
to
that cell and give me the day of the week.

Using Office 2003
XP Pro
Jaws 8

Re: [JAWS-Users] BCC field still not showing

2007-11-12 Thread Leonard Salinas
that's true if you have toggled on the bcc field with ctrl+b.
otherwise, it will not show up. if its showing for you, while
composing a message a single press of the ctrl+b will remove it and
it will stay gone till you toggle it back on with the same keystroke.
doesn't matter how many times you reboot.

You have me puzzled.
Let's say that you are going to start a new message.
You should start with the to field the screen,if you tab twice what do you
see or hear?
it should be the bcc field
I'm not sure if you rebooted your computer or not.
if not then try rebooting , to see what happens.

Hi, everyone. I tried all the suggestions that were given but I'm still
  not
getting anything. I even looked at the tutorial I have and tried what it
said to do but I'm still not getting anything. I wonder if I need to
  change
a setting in outlook express. Right now I'm typing in HTML format but I
wonder if I need to change to plain text. I don't know what else to do
  now
to get the BCC field to show.
