Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS does not read ...
Here are a few suggestions: 1. Check to see if the position of a toolbar or the task pane might be interfering with the dialog box window. You might want to go under view menu and turn off task pane or in the view menu look under the toolbars menu to see if any toolbars are active that might be interfering. Be sure to leave the standard and formatting toolbars checked. 2. There are script statements and functions in the Microsoft Word.JSS file relevant to the Find dialog box. You might want to open the script manager from within Word by pressing Insert-F2, then S until you hear Script Manager, and then press enter. When the Microsoft Word.JSS file is open you might want to use CTRL-S to recompile the scripts. 3. See if there are any external dialog boxes open when you are trying to use the find dialog or SaveAs dialog. If so, try closing them. Take care. Hi Brian, Thanks for your response; insert 2 changes typing mode which I usually set to none. I should have made my question more clear so let me try again: when I am in save or find dialogue boxes, I cannot read characters with right or left arrows, but can read the full word with insert up arrow. this did not happen with earlier versions of Jaws. I do not want to hear characters when I type, but want to read characters with right and left arrows for editing purposes. Someone suggested checking the language settings, but it is set to English U.S. This happens only in MS Word, not in IE, Eudora or Adobe Acrobat. Any ideas anyone? Hello All I have JAWS 8 and for some reason when I am in save or find dialogues, Jaws reads the entire word I type but not character by character, which makes it difficult to make corrections. My sighted husband said he can see the cursor moving but Jaws will not read the character where the cursor is. This is a new problem I did not have before with earlier Jaws versions. I went to the verbosity dialogue and turned different options on and off but nothing worked. I tried the configuration manager as well and without success. Any idea what the cause may be? Hi, I'm not exactly sure what you mean but if you want to know what is starting up with windows, go to run and type in a blank edit field msconfig and press enter. As you arrow down the list, you can uncheck what you don't want started up with windows. Note that when you restart, you will get a message telling you to select normal startup, etc., but tab to don't show this message again and tab again after checking that box to okay and press enter. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws changing hands
Good grief, I can't believe it has been almost 8 years now. In April 2000, Freedom Scientific was formed by combining three companies: Blazie Engineering, Henter-Joyce and Arkenstone. A brief biography of those who founded these three companies, along with Freedom Scientific's President and CEO can be found below. Freedom Scientific has a nine-person board of directors, including three independent business executives; two are blind users of the company's products. Another director's daughter, who is blind, also is a long-time customer. In addition, many of our associates are vision impaired. Our company mission is: To develop, manufacture, and market technology-based products that provide equal access to information and computing for those with vision impairments or learning disabilities. Picture of Ted Henter. Ted Henter, an engineer by training, learned computer programming after losing his sight in a 1978 car accident. In 1985, he started his own business. Two years later, he founded Henter-Joyce with Bill Joyce and began developing his first screen reading software, JAWS, that converts computer text to speech so people who are vision impaired can use a computer. Today, JAWS® for Windows is the world's best selling screen reading software, exceeding 100,000 users worldwide and growing. By allowing persons who are blind or with low vision achieve the same or higher productivity in computer-based jobs as sighted people, JAWS has increased employment and educational opportunities while helping employers meet requirements established by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Henter-Joyce also developed other software products including MAGic screen magnification and Connect Outloud Web access software. Ted Henter was named to the Freedom Scientific board in July 2002. Picture of Deane Blazie. In 1986, Deane Blazie, an electrical engineer with an advanced degree in computer science, formed Blazie Engineering and developed the Braille 'n Speak, the world's first notetaker with Braille key input and speech or data output. Notetakers soon became the device of choice among blind college students and professionals, who use them to take notes in class or meetings, keep their address books and update their personal calendars, among other functions. By the year 2000, Blazie offered five models and had sold more than 50,000 notetakers. Blazie is a leader in other hardware products for those who are blind, such as Braille embossers/printers, refreshable Braille displays and other products. Picture of Jim Fruchterman. Jim Fruchterman, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur specializing in optical character recognition, founded Arkenstone in 1989 in order to bring the benefits of his OCR technology to those who are blind by developing software-based reading systems. When documents are scanned these systems use the PC's sound card to read aloud documents, from books and newspapers to mail. Arkenstone's flagship software product, OpenBook, is the world's leading scanning and reading software for people with vision impairments. Arkenstone also developed WYNN, a scanning software program that helps school children or adults with learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, read independently. Picture of Dr. Lee Hamilton. Dr. Lee Hamilton came to Freedom Scientific as president of the Blind/Low Vision group in March of 2002 and also was appointed to the board of directors. He was named president and CEO of Freedom Scientific Inc. in July of 2002. Before joining Freedom Scientific, he was the President and CEO of AirNet Communications Corporation, a technology start-up he took public in 1999. Prior to AirNet, Dr. Hamilton held management positions of increasing responsibility at Motorola, Inc. including general manager of the System Transmission Products Business. Before joining Motorola, Dr. Hamilton received a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Purdue University and was a professor of Electrical Engineering at The Ohio State University. Re: [JAWS-Users] volume controls in vista with jaws
If your volume control has been set to be shown in the notification area, then you can access it in a couple ways. If you press insert with F11 you will get a list of icons in the notification area. Use the down arrow to get to the volume control. You can also use shift-tab from the desktop to move to the notification area and then use the left arrow key until you hear the volume control announced. If you use the insert-F11 method then once the list is showing use the tab key three times and press enter on the choice for left double click button. If you moved to the notification area from the desktop and used your arrow key to get to the icon then press enter on it. Once the volume control is opened then tab to the mixer button and press enter. When the mixer opens you can tab to the volume controls for active programs as well as to mute buttons for each active program. If you tab to the slider that controls the volume for the program you want to change volume for then use up and down arrow keys or page up and page down to make adjustments. If the volume control is not showing in the notification area then open the control panel from the start menu, type in the word taskbar in the search box (without the quotes), and tab to the taskbar and start menu link. Press enter on the link. Use your shift-tab keystroke to move to the page tabs of the dialog box. use the right arrow to move to the notification page. Use the tab key to move to the checkboxes to use for showing or hiding specific items in the notification area. One of the check boxes is for the volume control so make sure it is checked. Tab to the OK button and press enter. Access your microphone and other audio devices by opening the control panel from the start menu. Type in the phrase manage audio devices without the quotes in the edit box. Tab to the manage audio devices link and press enter. The resultant dialog box will likely open with the playback page active. Use a shift-tab keystroke to move to the page tabs and then use the right arrow key to move to the recording page. Tab to the list of devices for recording. You need to select a device by using a down arrow key to move on to the choice you want before the configure and properties buttons are available. Press enter on either the properties or configure button to get to where you might want to make changes. Re: [JAWS-Users] using neo-speech voices
Yeah, you're probably right about Real Speak, not Neo-speech. Thanks for the help. Ann At 08:32 PM 12/27/2007, you wrote: I was not aware that NeoSpeech came with Jaws 8. Do you mean Real speak ? In any case the procedure for getting NeioSpeech and RealSpeak to be the Jaws voice is the same. Insert J to open Jaws context menu if it is in the system tray or just alt tab to jaws if not. Go to Language on the menu bar. Then select Change Synthesiser. Then select SAPI 5. You then open the Options voice menu and first of all Global voices dialogue . Tab to the person combo box where all your SAPI 5 voices will be listed including Real Speak and NeoSpeech. There may be a delay as you move from one voice to another. This can be quite long on slower computers. You can then move onto individual voices dialogue to change further voices. If you really have NeoSpeech it the Voices may be called VW Paul and VW Kate. An odd feature is that initially this voice may play at a ludicrously slow rate but you can correct this in the same dialogue box. If anybody has tried to use ATT Natural voices the rate can be so slow it is almost impossible to select this voice as it is unintelligible, I had to get my sighted daughter to adjust the rate for me to make the voice comprehensible. You may be able to avoid this problem by increasing the rate before voice selection - I have not tried this. Interestingly after experimenting with loads of voices I have in the end gone back to using Eloquence exclusively as it performs so much better with Jaws - especially at accelerated speeds.
