[JAWS-Users] having trouble with start page of avg

2007-12-29 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
I have just installed AVG 7.5 free. The install was successful. However, when I
launch avg from my desktop and get put into its start screen(or what ever it is
called), I don't get any options to scan etc. It reports my last scan and
update, as being today(which is when I installed it). But that's all I get,
apart from a notice saying why I should update to the paid version. I listened
to a tutorial on AVG by Daren Duff on blind cool tech. In his demo, he shows
that on the start screen, I should be able to tab through various options.
These include: scan whole system, search for updates, selective scan(or
something like that) and others. I have none of these when I press tab. In
fact, I don't move any where when I press tab. Daren's demo is with AVG 7.1
paid version, but should it be any different? Does anyone know what I am doing
wrong? I am using XP home and Jaws 8.
Thanks Jason

Re: [JAWS-Users] having trouble with start page of avg

2007-12-29 Thread Chris Cooke
Jason: I have not tried to do what you are describing, i.e., selecting
options. However, I don't think you really get to choose anything with the
free version like select the scan time of day you want, etc. So, it scans
every morning at 8:00 AM for me and that's fine. It does scan the whole
system and takes about 45 min with my old computer.

Re: [JAWS-Users] using neo-speech voices

2007-12-29 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi, since NeoSpeech is Sapi5, you have to select Sapi5 in the list of
synthesizers, then in the global or individual voice settings, in the
person combo box, choose one of the Neospeech voices listed. Hope
that helps. By the way this is for all Sapi5 synthesizers, so that's
how I knew.

After installing JAWS 8 without them, I installed the neo-speech

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS does not read ...

2007-12-29 Thread S Farwaneh
Thanks for the hints.
1. I checked the view menu and both standard and formatting are checked.
2. I opened the script manager and pressed control s; it said
compiling complete; but now I get strange messages like unknown
script called to tab key and unknown function called to
getwordversion; I tried undue script but without success. How can I
return to the default script settings?
I realize I need to learn more about jaws scripts.

Thanks,
Samira

Here are a few suggestions:

1. Check to see if the position of a toolbar or the task pane might be
interfering with the dialog box window. You might want to go under view
menu and turn off task pane or in the view menu look under the toolbars menu
to see if any toolbars are active that might be interfering. Be sure to
leave the standard and formatting toolbars checked.

2. There are script statements and functions in the Microsoft Word.JSS file
relevant to the Find dialog box. You might want to open the script manager
from within Word by pressing Insert-F2, then S until you hear Script
Manager, and then press enter. When the Microsoft Word.JSS file is open you
might want to use CTRL-S to recompile the scripts.

3. See if there are any external dialog boxes open when you are trying to
use the find dialog or SaveAs dialog. If so, try closing them.

Take care.

  Hi Brian,

Thanks for your response; insert 2 changes typing mode which I
usually set to none. I should have made my question more clear so let
me try again: when I am in save or find dialogue boxes, I cannot read
characters with right or left arrows, but can read the full word with
insert up arrow. this did not happen with earlier versions of Jaws. I
do not want to hear characters when I type, but want to read
characters with right and left arrows for editing purposes. Someone
suggested checking the language settings, but it is set to English
U.S. This happens only in MS Word, not in IE, Eudora or Adobe
  Acrobat. Any ideas anyone?

  Thanks,

 Hold

up when you hear JAWS say Characters.

  Hello All
I have JAWS 8 and for some reason when I am in save or find
dialogues, Jaws reads the entire word I type but not character by
character, which makes it difficult to make corrections. My sighted
husband said he can see the cursor moving but Jaws will not read
the character where the cursor is. This is a new problem I did not
have before with earlier Jaws versions. I went to the verbosity
dialogue and turned different options on and off but nothing worked.
I tried the configuration manager as well and without success. Any
idea what the cause may be? I have also checked the regional and
language settings in the control panel and made sure everything is
set to English U.S. Anything else I can try?

Thanks a lot and Merry Christmas and happy New Year ,

Sense it sounds like you went with all defaults on IE7. The links you

Re: [JAWS-Users] Verification boxes

2007-12-29 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi, not really as the verification boxes are usually characters in
some kind of image. This is called visual verification and prevents
automated programmes, such as spambots, from registering a particular
site. There are alternatives, like audio verification, but not every
site that requires verification uses this. The only workaround is to
get sighted help to complete the verification. Sorry about that.

Re: [JAWS-Users] having trouble with start page of avg

2007-12-29 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi, I've not had any problems using the free AVG with both JAWS 8 and
JAWS 9 running on both XP and Vista respectively. Thought I'd let you know.

However, when I launch avg from my desktop and get put into its

scan etc. It reports my last scan and update, as being today(which

saying why I should update to the paid version. I listened to a
tutorial on AVG by Daren Duff on blind cool tech. In his demo, he
shows that on the start screen, I should be able to tab through
various options. These include: scan whole system, search for
updates, selective scan(or something like that) and others. I have
none of these when I press tab. In fact, I don't move any where when
I press tab. Daren's demo is with AVG 7.1 paid version, but should
it be any different? Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I am

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS does not read ...

2007-12-29 Thread Brian Lee
What I was trying to tell you about the toolbars is not just to see if the
formatting and standard were checked, but to see if other toolbars might be
checked that could be interfering with JAWS reading commands in dialog
boxes. Sometimes the positioning of a toolbar can interfere with JAWS.

If you are getting unknown function errors then perhaps you accidentally
typed something else into the script file before compiling it. If you are
not using any custom scripts then at this point I would suggest that you do
a JAWS repair. Insert your installation CD into the CD drive. You should
be presented with options to modify, repair or remove. If you installed
from a downloaded file and don't have your installation CD then find the
downloaded installation file on your computer and press enter on it. Make
sure you tab to the repair button and press spacebar on it, or if you are
working with some one using a mouse then have them click on the repair
button. Let JAWS repair your installation. When the repair is finished you
should restart your computer. This is probably the best thing for you to do
at this point, as if you are not familiar with script files then you
wouldn't know what statements to change to stop the unknown function
errors.

Take care. You can e-mail me off list if you would like and I'll try to
help you further. If you want to do that then instead of replying to this
message just press enter on my E-mail link below. If that doesn't work then
select my E-mail address below and copy it to the clipboard, and then paste
it in the To field of a new message.

Here are a few suggestions:

1. Check to see if the position of a toolbar or the task pane might be
interfering with the dialog box window. You might want to go under view
menu and turn off task pane or in the view menu look under the toolbars
menu
to see if any toolbars are active that might be interfering. Be sure to
leave the standard and formatting toolbars checked.

2. There are script statements and functions in the Microsoft Word.JSS
file
relevant to the Find dialog box. You might want to open the script
manager
from within Word by pressing Insert-F2, then S until you hear Script
Manager, and then press enter. When the Microsoft Word.JSS file is open
you
might want to use CTRL-S to recompile the scripts.

I think the first thing to check is that the provide feedback with sound
option is checked. Press Alt-T to bring up the tools menu, then press O to
bring up the options dialog box. Switch to the general page tab. You can
use shift-tab until you get to the page tabs and then use left arrow until
you are on the general page tab. Tab to the checkbox that says something
like Provide feedback with sound, and make sure it is checked. If it is not
checked then use the spacebar to check it. Tab to the OK button and press
spacebar.

If you need to reinstall the sounds file you can try to find it on the

copy then or upload a copy of it to SendSpace for you to download.

no me neither.
the demo you are talking about was from blind cool tech? a little while ago.
yeah, I listened to that, how ever, in the paid version there is a advanced
interface.
however, this does not apply to the free version.
also, you have to press space bar on a button - enter won't work for some
weird reason.
well at least for me.
oh yeah if you want to scan for viruses, you need to press spacebar on the
test centre button.
I am also running jaws on a XP machine and having no difficulties what so
ever.

Sense it sounds like you went with all defaults on IE7. The links you
click on are opening, but they are opening in tab browsing. Witch are
windows within the same page. if you ever used firefox than you know
 how they are used.
This can be turned off in tools menu, general tab menu, tab browser

I know this question in part has been batted around here from time to time
but here is my specific request. I'm looking for a site to pay for and down
load MP3 formatted music. I prefer to download singles rather than albums.
I'm looking for a site easy to navigate with JAWS and hopefully not loaded
with tons of spy ware etc. Does such a site exist and what has been folks
experience with it?

thanks,
Al

Hi Tom, go for CDex. Very accessible and it's free. Can convert from
one format to another, as well as convert CD tracks to WAV, MP3, and
possibly several others. Hope that helps.

[JAWS-Users] system restore and jaws

2007-12-29 Thread christopher.reagan
Hello all:

I am having a problem with jaws and system restore. I attempted to use
system restore on my computer to roll it back to an earlier time to fix some
illegal operations issues with some other programs. Needless to say now I'm
getting the following when I try to run jaws. Eloq.jls is missing one or
more shared components are missing please re install jaws to fix this
problem.

Okay I figured as much so I try to do this and hear's what I get.

This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package
exists and that you can access it or contact the application vender to
verify that this is a valid windows installer package.

Now I'm at my wits end with this. I even get this error when de installing
jaws 9. Can someone give me any suggestions short of undoing the
restoration process?

Thanks for your help in advance

Re: [JAWS-Users] system restore and jaws

2007-12-29 Thread Flor Lynch
Could you try installing an earlier version - JAWS8, perhaps? Could you go
back to a time still earlier? If not, the best thing might be to undo that
system Restore, and then find another way to deal with the first set of
[non-JAWS] problems.

[JAWS-Users] jaws resources for professionals

2007-12-29 Thread Crystal Phoenix
Hey all,

This is my first question for the list, but first I need to provide a little
background.

I am a new AT instructor at a place in North Fort Myers FL, and am still
trying to work my way through new ground here. One of the tasks they would
like

me to complete it to make kirricula for JAWS and how it is used with certin
programs. Kiricuum for JAWS in conjunction with MS outlook for example. This

is sort of like a lesson plan to tell them whatI'm covering and where I'm
going. I've never done anuthing like this before. One of my supervisors it
telling

me that all I have to do is make an outline then paste the relavent
keystrokes from the JAWS website itself, which, I'm finding, isn't always
the case.

I've done a lot of cotting and pasting from the help files, but even that
doesn't cover everything they're wanting me to do here.

Are there any resources other than the quick reference guide for JAWS that
can aid me in this? Any sort of pre-made models? I'm at a loss here, because

I was always under the impression that JAWS and a structure that includes
lesson planning and kiriculum stuff didn't work too well together, but maybe

it was just me and my preconceived ideas.

Help, please?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] system restore and jaws

 Hello all:

I am having a problem with jaws and system restore. I attempted to use
system restore on my computer to roll it back to an earlier time to fix
 some
illegal operations issues with some other programs. Needless to say now
 I'm
getting the following when I try to run jaws.

I even get this error when de
 installing
jaws 9. Can someone give me any suggestions short of undoing the
 restoration process?

Thanks for your help in advance

 Chris Reagan

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws resources for professionals

2007-12-29 Thread David Griffith
As you know there is a learning curve with Jaws and over time this list
will teach you a lot. I am certainly still learning and will probably
continue to do so for some years.

I would suggest in the first place

1. You go to the application you need to learn about and press the
following keys.
Insert F1 for basic Jaws Help
Insert F1 twice for more detailed help
Insert H for a list of Hotkeys suitable for the application you are in.

2. Remember Windows and Office short cut keys are just as important as Jaws
keys for effective application usage. For example pressing Control plus
enter will send an email in Outlook but this is a Office rather than Jaws
command but is just as important to know. A Google search will normally
reveal the Windows or Office shortcut keys. A further tip for Outlook is
the following Office keystroke to access the Toolbars. The Jaws command is
Insert F8 but not all the features of the toolbar are listed here. To access
the full toolbar Press the alt key and then Control Tab will allow you to
navigate to the Toolbar where you can cursor through the buttons and do
things like change the account you are sending an email from whilst
composing an email for example.

3. Just play around by pressing Insert 1 to turn keyboard help on. This can
teach you a lot about the Jaws shortcut keys. Pres Insert 1 to again to
return to normal.

4. Last but not least look at the Tips and Tricks page of the Jaws User web
site which has a wealth of instruction for different applications.

Regards

David Griffith
