[JAWS-Users] Outlook Express Problem with dial-up connection

2008-01-16 Thread Taika

For a while this was fine after the computer was new and also my XP Home
program. I also use JAWS 6.2.
Today, if I am connected to the Internet and using Outlook Express and then
cycle to the Desktop, when I return to Outlook Express, the Internet
connection is disconnected always and this involves re-dialing which is a
pain all day long, everyday.
What can I do to restore this to the original configuration or setting so
this does not happen since it is such a waste of time and modem?
Thanks in advance for your help!

You should go to setting, and connection tab, and it is a checkbox, that
says:

That should be unchecked.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Switch accessibility

2008-01-16 Thread David Griffith
I select the file or files I want to select in the normal way in Explorer
and then press the application key to select convert with switch from the
context menu. If I want to select files that are not contiguous I use the
control plus space method to select and deselect individual files in a
folder. Remember that you have to keep the control button pressed down
whilst cursoring down for this method to work.

Once that has been done everything appears fine. The only oddity I have
found is that pressing enter on the convert button does not work but
pressing the space bar does. I find a similar thing in AVG.

David

[JAWS-Users] [JAWS] New Google accessible search for blind/visually impaired

2008-01-16 Thread Paul Shallbetter
First I will past the link then under the link I will post the information.

Read the information before using the link.

http://labs.google.com/accessible/

Accessible Search FAQ

What is Google Accessible Search?
Accessible Search is an early Google Labs product designed to identify and
prioritize search results that are more easily usable by blind and visually
impaired users. Regular Google search helps you find a set of documents
that is most relevant to your tasks. Accessible Search goes one step
further by helping you find the most accessible pages in that result set.

How does Accessible Search work?
In its current version, Google Accessible Search looks at a number of
signals by examining the HTML markup found on a web page. It tends to favor
pages that degrade gracefully --- pages with few visual distractions and
pages that are likely to render well with images turned off. Google
Accessible Search is built on Google Co-op's technology, which improves
search results based on specialized interests.

Why is Google offering this?
Accessible Search is a natural and important extension of Google's overall
mission to better organize the world's information and make it universally
accessible. Google Accessible Search is designed to help the visually
impaired find the most relevant, useful and comprehensive information, as
quickly as possible.

In the past, visually impaired Google users have often waded through a lot
of inaccessible websites and pages to find the required information. Our
goal is to provide a more useful and accessible web search experience for
the blind and visually impaired.

How do you decide which sites are "accessible" and which are not?
Broadly, Google defines accessible websites and pages as content that the
blind and visually impaired can use and consume using standard online
technology, and we've worked with a number of organizations to determine
which websites and pages meet those criteria. Our methods for identifying
accessible pages and content are always evolving; Currently we take into
account several factors, including a given page's simplicity, how much
visual imagery it carries and whether or not its primary purpose is
immediately viable with keyboard navigation.

How can sites make their content more accessible to the blind?
Some of the basic recommendations on how to make a website more usable and
accessible include keeping Web pages easy to read, avoiding visual clutter
-- especially extraneous content -- and ensuring that the primary purpose
of the Web page is immediately accessible with full keyboard navigation.
There are many organizations and online resources that offer Website owners
and authors guidance on how to make websites and pages more accessible for
the blind and visually impaired. The W3C publishes numerous guidelines
including Web Content Access Guidelines that are helpful for Website owners
and authors. Broad adherence to these guidelines is one way of ensuring
that sites are universally accessible.

Does Accessible Search Filter Out Inaccessible Content?
No. First of all accessible is a very subjective measure --- what's more,
queries can vary widely with respect to how accessible the results are. As
an example, if you are looking for information such as weather forecasts or
reference material such as the definition of an unfamiliar term, the result
set often consists of both accessible and inaccessible content. In these
cases, Google Accessible Search promotes those results that have been
measured to be more accessible. On the other hand, if the particular query
is about video games, the chances are fairly high that a majority of the
best results for that query will be visually busy pages. So in the final
analysis, we never filter content in Google Accessible Search; we pick the
best results exactly as we do with regular Google search, and then re-order
the top results by their level of accessibility.

The Result Set Looks Identical To Regular Search?
The operational word in the above question is looks. Google Accessible
Search does not in any way change the look and feel of Google search
results. What it does (see earlier question) is to re-order results based
on how accessible they are.

Navigating Search Results
After Google Accessible Search was launched, many of our users sent us
feedback about the results page (both Google Accessible and regular search)
being difficult to navigate with screenreaders. In response, we have
updated the results page in both cases to have section headers that can be
used in conjunction with screenreader hotkeys to quickly skim through the
page. Thus, once Google has responded to your search query, use your access
technology's "move by section" keys to move between the section that
displays sponsored ads and the individual results.

How Can I Perform More Complex Searches?
Notice that
http://labs.google.com/accessible
has a link to Advanced Search
in addition to the simple text box. Use this link to access Google Adva

This is not 'new' - why I've taken out 'new' from subject line - in as much
as it has been around since late summer 2006; and there may, indeed, be folk

Re: [JAWS-Users] [JAWS] New Google accessible search for blind/visuallyimpaired

2008-01-16 Thread James Scholes
Hi,

great information, but I would rather use regular Google, its what everybody
else does so it is what I prefer to do. Just my opinion though, a lot of
people use this so it obveously works for them, but for me it detracts focus
from the main aspects of web browsing.

Re: [JAWS-Users] converting email messages to text files

2008-01-16 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
You can open each message and go to "save as" and select txt as how you want
the message to be saved. If you want to save all messages into one text
file, go to the folder where the messages are saved, hit control A to select
the entire folder, control C to copy the folder, control V to place it in
the file you choose, and then save the output as a text file.

Respectfully,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Outlook Express Problem with dial-up connection

2008-01-16 Thread Casey McKinney
I used to have Dial Up and HATED IT What You should try is, Go to ALT+T
in your Outlook Express Window, which will Bring Up Tools then go down to
Options. Then Control Tab until you get to Connection. Check the Box by hitting
Space Bar, the one that says connect using a specific LAN Line or Dial Up
Connection. Then Tab down to OK and see if that doesn't help you. I hated Dial
up because I always had to Reconnect after 2 Hours. When I was on and Talking
on MSN, I had to tell people I could only chat for X amount of time before it
disconnected. Then I'd get off and reconnect and resume my Conversation with
who ever I was talking to. Now I have DSL and don't have to worry about it.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Outlook Express Problem with dial-up connection

For a while this was fine after the computer was new and also my XP Home
program. I also use JAWS 6.2.
Today, if I am connected to the Internet and using Outlook Express and then
cycle to the Desktop, when I return to Outlook Express, the Internet
connection is disconnected always and this involves re-dialing which is a
  pain all day long, everyday.
What can I do to restore this to the original configuration or setting so
this does not happen since it is such a waste of time and modem?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Try to go to File by doing ALT+F and go to SAVE AS and give Your Message a Name

Thanks, that's much easier. I always forget about that application key. I
forget programs and services get added to that as you install things.

I'm on the 14 day trial and have not looked up the purchase price. Do you
know what it is off hand and the process to go from trial to paid version?
If you don't off hand don't worry I can looked it up, just wondering.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Switch accessibility

2008-01-16 Thread David Griffith
I think it is about £10 . You can pay by Papal and I do not recall any
problem putting in the serial number to convert from trial. The software
itself has worked fine without any problems.

What I do recall is an irksome check out procedure where
1. You have to wade through a list of all the other software they sell.
2. Beware rushing through this and simply checking out as buried within
this list is a support package for Switch which given the simplicity of the
program seems a little unnecessary to me. You have to uncheck the support
package to avoid being charged extra for this. A bit sneaky for it to be
presented in this way. From memory different categories of support were
available, gold and Silver and so on. Surprisingly over the top for such a
small simple utility.

HI Ming.

Look in your preferences. I have not used MSN in a long time, but I do
recall a check box that says something like: Show graphics emoticons in
instant messages. It's a check box that you can uncheck, if it is not
already unchecked. I hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] strange thing happening with windows media palyer

2008-01-16 Thread Leonard Salinas
i have all kinds of mp3 files that i download from various places and
for some reason, when trying to play some of these files with windows
media player they play in double speed instead of the normal speed.
the only way i can get these files to play correctly is to load them
in to goldwave which is an audio editing program. this only happens
to some of my files, most of my music files play
correctlywith windows media player. I'm just wondering if
anybody else has had this problem

Re: [JAWS-Users] strange thing happening with windows media palyer

2008-01-16 Thread David Griffith
A quick work around may be to check for a windows Media Player update or
move across to WinAmp which may cope with these files better?

If you do not want to do this then you could try the following.

I have heard of this a the *chipmunk* effect. I have not experienced this
myself but I believe it may possibly be a sensitivity by Windows Media
Player to certain forms of encoding, bit rates and possibly a reaction to
some variable bit rate files.

What I would do is reincode the files. If you are happy using Gold Wave use
this utility to see if you can save the files with CBR that is constant bit
rate, rather than VBR - variable bit rate. I am not familiar with Gold Wave
but I suspect that this will be possible. Alternatively use any program to
convert the files back to WAV files and then save them again as MP3 files.
You will probably lose tag information.

Let us know if any of this works in case someone else gets this problem.

David Griffith

You can open each message and go to "save as" and select txt as how you want
the message to be saved. If you want to save all messages into one text
file, go to the folder where the messages are saved, hit control A to select
the entire folder, control C to copy the folder, control V to place it in
the file you choose, and then save the output as a text file.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] converting email messages to text files

Hello,
I have a large number of email messages in an Outlook Express folder. I
would like to convert each one of them into a text file and save them to my
hard drive. Is there a program that will do this?
Thanks,
Erin
